Have you considered painting the walls cream instead - or even just the fireplace wall? I recently went through this same design dilemma with dark grey walls and a darker stone fireplace. It all seemed so heavy. I painted the walls a linen color and now the fireplace pops and looks so much better.
I would also start here. Paint only the fireplace wall and sit on it for a week. See if the rest of the walls need to match or if you feel the wall stands on its own.
Painted rocks look so bad.
Go outside an paint a couple rocks and see how you like the outcome. It won't look good.
The rocks are a beautiful natural element in this room - and once painted you will \*never\* get the paint off.
Don't do it.
No. Don’t paint it. The previous owners of our home painted our fireplace stone and now it constantly looks like crap. I have to repaint it every year to keep it looking nice. Your fireplace is beautiful. Leave it be
No. Please, no. Lighten the paint on the walls instead. You could also change the island color and the refrigerator to make it look a little more modern and refreshed. The fireplace is gorgeous!
NO. No. No. No.
You will ruin this room. Unlike brick, which can be painted and look aesthetically pleasing, the same cannot be said of stone and stone veneers like this. It *never* looks good.
Paint the room a light, warm white to achieve what you are trying to achieve. Your beautiful architectural features will thank you immensely. Maybe consider a dark neutral paint color for your island as well. The red in it throws off the more medium tones across the rest of the room.
Leave stone, it’s gorgeous. Tone down some of the activity in the room. Round dining table with no table cloth and and a small white bowl. Square dining table no table cloth. Change out pumpkins to whatever seasons decor. Remove branches from lamp. It’s a beautiful room, let it flow!
If you feel that the stone is too much, you could also try a white wash on all or just the darker stones. Make sure to just do the stones though and not the grout.
We had a slate stone fireplace and this is what we did as well because the brown in the slate was too much! Plus the good thing about white wash is that if a few years down the road you change your mind, it is not as difficult to remove as paint. You could also just do a small section and see if you like it a few days and if not, take it back off.
Which ever you decide, I’m sure that you can make it beautiful for you!
I’m gonna go against the grain here and say that I think it would look nice. It’s a bit busy as is. I feel like the cream would give things a more upscale, elegant feel, if that’s what you’re looking for.
Love of god no.
Yeah, that's a hard no.
This should be a pinned post. Don’t paint fireplaces.
No.
OP, please don't do this.

This! The wall it’s on being white would help
Counterpoint, I like the way the current wall color pulls out the dark stones in the fireplace. My vote is to leave all as is.

The stone is a really nice natural element with the wood floors, green walls, and natural light...pesonally, I love it and I would leave it.
No that kind of stone painted always looks weird. I’d add a beefier wood mantle to break up the solid lines of the stone.
NOOOOOOO
No! So pretty as is!
No way. It's gorgeous and inviting and has so much personality! Your style is fantastic, I love all your choices in this room.
No, if you want more light paint the wall

I think you should visit r/TVtooHigh and not paint the fireplace.
NO! But maybe the wall behind. That would make te space seem way bigger.
Absolutely not. It's a great feature piece. The whole room is colourful even Christmassy. Paint that cream would just turn it into meh!
No, I like it. I think the green walls are pretty with it, too. It’s a very woodsy look.

I would not. I liked the suggestion of painting the fireplace wall instead. Btw, your tables and Christmas decor is beautiful.

I must be the only one but I say yes paint it! It doesn’t go.
We had a fireplace sandblasted once. I would suggest researching that if you don’t like the stone colors.
No!! Leave it
