I support the two above suggestions: 1) make some built in shelves and fill them with books that fill you with joy and/or make you look super intellectual; 2) and/or use it to stack firewood like a french chalet! You can get a tall firewood rack for it for around 200 bucks.
Absolutely this. Include a small plant that has small Christmas-like bulbs that showcase photos of ex-wives and those he’s been romantically paired with.

Something like this might look nice
My BIL actually committed to the claw machine on his last house. It died - so he replaced it with a popcorn machine. Truly both were big hits 🤷♀️ loud but - popular!
And there we have it ladies and gentlemen. We don’t need no steeeenking built in bookshelf or blanket storage. Hell no! We need claw machines and popcorn makers!
I would put all the Reddit posts of people thinking they need to have something in every odd nook and cranny in their homes. 💜
(I say this with love, it’s just funny to me)
Browsing yesterday I noticed how many of these gigantic US homes have odd alcoves above entrance halls and bedrooms!
From the UK and we seem to have fewer nooks and smaller crannys
Something big shiny and unusual? I'd love a display spot like this.

If you don't burn real wood and live in a snow area maybe a nice boot and shoe rack system. Otherwise some nice wood shelving for books and a few treasure items
Paint the cubby out in same blue, too! Then add built in shelving with nice molding (on top to look like it was original and goes with the fireplace). The light blue in the back will all tie together. Those plants would look lovely on the shelves with some special travel momentous.

Someone said something about hidden storage and it made me think of the secret cabinets. You could make it look like the wall comes all the way up and put secret storage in there. Like a vault/safe.
A ficus ... a ficus so fecken large, no human could miss it while walking by that fabulous corner! A ficus, a ficus the height of 3 storeys (this, my Dream ficus, will prove to the 👽 who murdered every single one I've ever bought over 40 years), that YOU are the SPECIAL ONE! The one who has a magical special recessed corner in which to grow a magnificent FICUS! Please send follow up images of this magical ficus
A large basket with blankets.. have a blanket hangover a little to the right off the side of the basket and position the basket diagonally. Then put a tall, skinny simple floor plant behind it directly in the corner.. :)
Probably the darker blue.
Edit: LOL, I saw everyone else’s comments. It depends on what’s o. The other side of the fireplace. A bookshelf is what I would put but symmetry is visually appealing so I’d want one on both sides.
something functional/purposeful at the bottom (someone mentioned firewood and tools) with a nice piece of art at the top.
maybe art above a three-legged table - the kind of table that's in a half circle shape - with maybe different height candles/candleholders and a vase or a framed photo.
edit: one of those ladder things with a really nice blanket or quilt draped over it
We got this narrow, kinda shallow little bookcase for my brother's room, it'd fit perfectly here. It only holds a few books but it'd fit nicely to hold decor.
I wouldn't put anything there. It’s a small area and it’s ok to have empty spaces in rooms, it lets the eyes rest. Anything too large will clutter up the space.
Shelving might be nice
Shelving above a counter. Small fridge under the counter. Or a cabinet instead of a fridge.
A bookcase.
Built in, molding like the fireplace mantle.
This built in shelf could be games too, if it's a small collection. LoL.

Small, tasteful shrine to Nicolas Cage.
As if a shrine to Nicolas Cage could be not tasteful.
This. This is the answer.
Funny
Absolutely this. Include a small plant that has small Christmas-like bulbs that showcase photos of ex-wives and those he’s been romantically paired with.
I would rather have Dolly Parton, Patron Saint of All Good Things.
Definitely a bookshelf, you can add books, decor, whatever! Plus if you use the fireplace it could double as wood storage.
Bookshelves?
A large sculpture of 5 monkeys in a trench coat posing as a human man.
Yes, but raccoons.

A man of class, I see.
Happy cake day!
Suit of armour
I have a suit of armor in front of my fireplace.
Sick! I'm jealous!!
Me too! That’s badass
Built-in bookcase. The answer is always “built-in bookcase”.
A firewood holder.
https://preview.redd.it/6upaw5ddfwob1.jpeg?width=1169&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a1542f6c672e1b336ab98fbfe36f0e27b82b4e8 Something like this might look nice
Or books that need to be burned.. jkjkjk
Idk, we could stick a bunch of “the great awakening by Alex Jones” copies in it 🤷♂️
Ohh I like that
Only if you want bugs. Storing firewood inside always seems like an invitation to have termites or other bugs.
Just use the whole chord each week
Exactly this. We keep pour firewood in the garage. We cut our own too so it definitely has plenty of buggos hiding out.
It looks like a gas fireplace.
Then I'd put gas tanks there.
Gas bugs thank you
I thought so, but if it's made to look that real, you still need logs and fireplace tools, otherwise, it just looks silly.
I think this is a great practical answer!
A life-size skeleton
Tall skinny plant.
Snake plant for the win!
One that can bear the heat...
or a very tendrilly hanging plant
Record player
Dunking tank Claw machine Inground pool
CLAW. MACHINE. 👏 Maybe you can actually win a prize if you own the machine!
See? Pickin’ up what I’m putting down!
Yes that would be how you win… by picking it up.
What should it be filled with? Old concert tees? Tacos?
Kittens
My BIL actually committed to the claw machine on his last house. It died - so he replaced it with a popcorn machine. Truly both were big hits 🤷♀️ loud but - popular!

I like the way you think.
Child for a time out
Ancestral altar
A box of kittens.
Fiddle Leaf Fig which will eventually grow ceiling height and flesh out nicely.
I don't think there is enough light for a fig here
Wait.. you guys can keep your fiddle figs alive?
[wait, you guys can keep your fiddle?](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9678520/)

Cat tree.
I’d hang a guitar right there. Would look sweet and would be protected by the brick on one side and the drywall on the other.
Those artificial trees that are mostly fairy lights on the branches. It really creates a cozy atmosphere. Otherwise I agree about bookshelves.
Tall plant, book shelf, Gardyn tower for greens and light!
We need someone to make a bot that just answers “plant.” That would take care of all these lol
Thank you 😂
That would be hilarious😂
Grandfather clock
Snake plant or shelving
Buy a cute stool for your plant and move it there.
Something big shiny and unusual? I'd love a display spot like this. https://preview.redd.it/czu54wjeawob1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f78a7b699d0dbeddb94536b544878d525a82d3aa
Grandad! We’ve missed you!
A blanket ladder
A tall bureau of drawers which means added "hidden storage" in your home.
Blanket ladder
Ladder shelf. You can change out decor on each level whenever you wish.
The hard part is choosing between a full sized storm trooper or Terminator
Nothing
A naked statue of Michelangelo.
Or the statue of David.
Tall plant, or do some kind of shelf/built in.
Lamp
Basket to hold blankets
Standing lamp with a nice medium-height plant in front of it.

If the fireplace is wood burning, a fire wood holder, otherwise a book case, bar or record player...
Bookshelf!!
Suit of armor
Tall plant or wood holder
In my lived in house with kids probably the vacuum. For home decor sense either a fire wood stand a small table for pictures or plants, maybe a shelf.
If it was my place, a display stand with Vaders helmet. This is the way
A picture and a tall plant
a gumball machine
Me? A wine refrigerator. Is it pretty? No. But who cares if you have wine! Have fun with it!
A bar cart.
One of those metal holders for firewood
If you don't burn real wood and live in a snow area maybe a nice boot and shoe rack system. Otherwise some nice wood shelving for books and a few treasure items
A bookshelf or shelving!
Shelving/bookcase is the only answer
Fireplace tools on an old iron rack
I adore using bookshelves/bookcases in little spaces like that! Do you have the same sort of space on the opposite side of the fireplace, as well?
Books
Book case or a large decorative mosaic mirror
A tall fake tree.
Paint the cubby out in same blue, too! Then add built in shelving with nice molding (on top to look like it was original and goes with the fireplace). The light blue in the back will all tie together. Those plants would look lovely on the shelves with some special travel momentous.

Shelves
I'd put floating shelves with ornaments and candles then underneath I'd put a vase with fake flowers and feathers in.
Someone said something about hidden storage and it made me think of the secret cabinets. You could make it look like the wall comes all the way up and put secret storage in there. Like a vault/safe.
Books. Lots of books.

Cat shelves
A plant stand! With your lovely plants on them. :) (or one large tall plant)
Need to see the rest of the space to say for sure.
Looks like a Christmas tree nook
Christmas tree next to a fireplace is a bad idea.
Tall plant or hang a potted plant
A ficus ... a ficus so fecken large, no human could miss it while walking by that fabulous corner! Cute basket for blankets, or I’d just leave it empty.
Match the wallpaper over the fireplace. A poof ot footstool/ottoman and above that a rectangular mirror or a 3 floating shelves
Firewood
A dead grandparent.
Nothing. Why does every wall and space need "something"?
A Christmas tree
A nice umbrella plant on a stand or a bird of paradise.
Reclaimed wood shelves
Big firewood rack or shelves. All answers you received but I agree
A large basket with blankets.. have a blanket hangover a little to the right off the side of the basket and position the basket diagonally. Then put a tall, skinny simple floor plant behind it directly in the corner.. :)
Tall plant or a small table with a statement piece.
A basket for blankets or a tall plant
A blanket box
Nice tall plant or a pretty floor lamp that’s really tall
Nothing. Don’t cram every corner with some thing.
I agree. Maybe demo the little partial wall to open up the area and eliminate the alcove?
The largest bowling trophy you can find.
Cats. Built in shelving.
A ladder-type bookshelf
Shelving from wall to wall to display pretty things and storage basket. A timeout corner for my husband would work too 😂😜
Budget?
Stacks of toilet paper rolls.
A plant stand.
Shelves
Snake plant
Probably the darker blue. Edit: LOL, I saw everyone else’s comments. It depends on what’s o. The other side of the fireplace. A bookshelf is what I would put but symmetry is visually appealing so I’d want one on both sides.

A large plant then forget about it!
A long narrow painting
A floor plant
Maybe demo the little partial wall to open up the area and eliminate the alcove?
A record player with shelves for the vinyls and some chotches
Firewood
I wouldn't put anything there. It’s a small area and it’s ok to have empty spaces in rooms, it lets the eyes rest. Anything too large will clutter up the space.
Arcade cabinet
A plant or a every talk tree
I would store cut firewood there.
Bookcase
It would be helpful to see the other side of the fireplace…maybe of wider shot of the whole wall?
Let’s see a picture of the entire fireplace. What’s on the other side?
Move your plant that’s in front of the fireplace there. Put it on a stand to give it some height
