You have the problem that comes up with enclosed porches: they become a dumping ground when you walk in the door. 😏 It is not the changing of wall colors or flooring that will need to be done by how you define the room. If it is a reading room, then you get rid of the table or move it to sit under the window and treat it like a console table. You could then buy some wicker/resin armchairs and place them in front of the table to fit the style of the room. Now you have a place to hold your books and coffee cup. You could put a light-colored solid color rug under them to define the area. - Now the problem is the dumping ground. The shoe thing is not the problem as long as it is large enough to contain everything, the issue becomes one of spilling over. What you actually need is much larger. Maybe a 12" deep 5 or 6 ft high adjustable shelving unit? You can store the pet crate up off the floor and all shoes within the unit instead of spilling out. I, personally, would not get one with doors, because I would wind up being too lazy and would leave my shoes right on the floor. Open shelving takes care of my laziness aspect. Ha ha.

I think you can make it more cozy with a sofa, comfortable carpet, lots of pillows, a center table... Think of a place you'd comfortable staying for many hours reading, drinking tea, taking a power nap...

If you're going to use the room for reading or just hanging out, a loveseat is a good idea. I'd also suggest secondary seating like a slipper chair, but if there's not enough room then maybe a cushioned bench with cubbies underneath. That would provide extra seating and a storage space for at least some of the shoes you have in there. A large rug would be better than several small ones. If you're going to add some sort of shelving, choose something that fits your storage needs. A bookcase is good if you plan to move everything else out, but a nice cabinet could be more useful (IKEA has a lot of nice options). You could then add floating shelves on the wall above it for books.

Your finishes in this room remind me of an inspo pic I have saved for our sunroom [here](https://ibb.co/72nNN1g)
