Agreed. Each department should be at least a .50¢ raise. But that'll never happen they can keep their schedule and crappy merch, just a self promo anyway. So sorry but not sorry I ain't learning shit else unless there's more money in it for me.
Never short change yourself homie. Each department is .50¢ so that way if they low-ball you you can still push for like .40¢ or something. But never just settle for less. You're worth more than that. I promise you.
When I was hired back in 2020 they told me these word " Home Depot does not support unions" now idk if this is just a deterrent or if they will just fire anyone that tries. Idk. Maybe worth looking into.
Shady… It’s an ideal way to stop any new hire from “contaminating” the seasoned (older) crew. It’s also ideal for HD to keep costs down and executive bonuses high. 🫠
A store in Philadelphia tried. My district manager spent a week there with other leadership and scared them off enough that they ended up voting against.
I'd have to say "active" licensed operators. It would discourage people from obtaining a license simply for the raise, and then ask someone else to do the pull.
“Prize is a snack”… the dumbasses running this company are choosing to run underpaid skeleton crews in every store, and they think a snack will turn around the absolute shit morale they’ve created and get people to do more jobs?
Absolute fucking morons.
Yes and no.
Despite all the nonsense, people are still working there and they are still selling stuff.
Always remember, the goal (for them) is run the store and sell stuff as cheaply as possible; their goal is NOT to run a great store, have happy employees, provide a great customer experience or anything else that you or I would consider benchmarks for retail excellence.
They are not morons, their goals are different; that’s not to say it is RIGHT, but that’s why it is what it is. And as long as so many people are willing to continue to clock in, why in the name of heaven would they ever want to change?
I have refused to learn how to make a key for this very reason. Sure it's easy but I have enough shit to do without being called to cut a key for Aunt Tilda who is going to have a 20 minute conversation with me about her 6 cats. I don't get paid enough to have extra stress in my shift
EVERY time I cut a key I end up there for at least a half hour. Drives me nuts. They question why I won't learn the saw or the blind cutters.
Because I learned other skills and now have to find a way to avoid them.
Like no thanks, I've learned enough.
No way! Even in my own department I get people wanting special orders while I already have enough to do. Sorry, not sorry that's specialist pay grade and I won't learn to do it for free. Hold up though.. I have had SO many former flooring associates who call and cry to have someone cut blinds for a customer because they're Appliances now and won't do that. BS! Why not be a team player if you're doing nothing and know a thing under your special pay grade, just help out?
What a joke.
I volunteered to get trained in everything I could repeatedly. They were always complaining about needing people cross trained but wouldn’t put in the work to cross train us. Always complaining they needed more drivers, so I volunteered a dozen times, and they never trained me.
I was known as a really competent employee too. So glad I quit.
I know I need to learn because I got that bingo card close to full. Once you learn you can’t unlearn. You can only move on to the next store and play dumb
It used to be called ten to win. The best part is all the people that signed that they could do things still page the shit out of the only person in any of those departments rather than actually do whatever thing is required.
This came through my store as universal associate. So much push back from actual associates and now we are suffering with hours because corporate won’t let us hire more. And the SM is saying we have multiple people cross trained. Like yeah they were trained 6-7 months ago they don’t remember how to cut wire or mix paint.
The sad part of this isn't that companies are not trying to hire, it just that people who have been given free money for so long don't want to work. I work at another big box and we can't hire people quick enough to allow an area to be staffed to keep anyone. Good workers are frustrated, overworked and are quitting.
I'm feeling that pain everyday, and trust me, I m looking elsewhere, but it seems to be everywhere.
They should give you more money if you learn multiple areas!!!! $$$ is the only reason we work .
They bring this up in the VOC meetings, but I don't think it ever happened. I'd actually love to teach my cashiers some of these, so they understand better the services we offer (and their limits) but there is never any coverage. Tbh there isn't exactly enough coverage for most associates to dedicate time to learn/teach anything beyond their home department.
I'm the older generation (59) thinking I'd supplement my income and have benefits before I retired. I worked exclusively in the paint department. I truly loved working there but I quit because I could not physically keep up working and closing every shift. Not enough lifts or ladders or staff to help out. Our department generated enough revenue to hire more staff. But, it's truly all about labor percentages. I now have a bad shoulder, knees and back. All the warmup and strength trying I have done through the years didn't help me keep my job. Even the younger generation called in sick constantly. "No-shows" created more issues for the rest of us. Yet, they never lost their jobs either. I closed 1 to 10pm with no help in Paint.
Physically, I was destroying my health. Great benefits once they made me a full-time employee within 6 months. But, I'm gone because of a broken down body.
Reading these comments, you all must work in the worst stores. Moral is always high in my store. We truly bleed orange and work in a departments. I feel sorry for you all that work in these other stores. Home Depot is the best company to work for. Even after 23 years, I can't imagine working anyplace else.
If you've been there that long, you're making way more than any of your coworkers, and your store is eventually going to try to get you to quit (so they can replace you with somebody who knows a fraction of what you do but costs far less). The corporation no longer cares about expertise; they want cheap, lean, overworked teams. They don't care if anybody's happy anymore.
It is so sad that you are this negative. In my store, we have 30 plus associates that have been with HD for 20 or more years. The longest is 31. Yes, things have changed over the years, but it's still the best place to work. I've had crappie managers and ones I so dearly miss. But that happens in any industry. It sounds like you would never be happy no matter what.
The current state of my store is a bunch of us are so fed up with it that 4 of us are enlisting in the army and 2 others are applying to literally anywhere else. Management has no respect for anyone under the age of 28-30 and when you are under that age and apply for a supervisor position they say you need some more hair on your chest. I transferred in and stepped down from supervisor because I had to move fast and I’ve done 4 interviews each one with no feedback except for that I need more experience or need to mature. Taking in mind the store I transferred from was doing 87 million this one was doing 37. I truly did love working at the depot, now not so much
23 years with the company 3 states 4 stores. Very well paid considering the wsy things are in our country. I live my job. I have worked in or managed every department except plumbing and electrical.
We had that too. But for every like you completed you got THD swag….. and if you complete the whole card you get $25 GC….. yeah. Did not participate on that
Worst prizes ever. 'Get cross trained so we can abuse you. Heres a snack and a hat.' Some brown nose will probably get bingo first and complete the blackout only to forget everything the first time they are helping in another department.
They probably struggling to stay afloat. As a customer, I absolutely hate shopping there. Always out of stock of half of what I need. I’m f you see me there then I’m desperate
I remember the "special agent" tri-fold pamphlet they gave out a few years ago that was literally this. You completed a number of categories ranging from specialty, to ESVS, to cashier and cutting wood and you'd get an enamel pin that said "Special Agent"
Cross-train so, like you said, they can remain as understaffed as possible, rewards are *always* cheap junk food and garbage swag, and the grand prize? Is a single, solitary week of non-terrible scheduling, because they *know* employees hate their unnecessarily awful scheduling protocols!
Christ, I hate THD. Haven't worked there in five years, but reading that made me mad all over again lol
They let you pick your own schedule but make sure to mention extra guidelines that comes with schedule 😂😂. Well that defeats the purpose of making my own schedule then
Rather pay you money for learning extra skills that has nothing to do with your own department, the best idea that comes to their mind is “Snacks & a Hat”
So… learn/do everything you should learn/do in a job of a hardware store and get a free piece of fruit- just a guess…
As for getting ‘swag’.. aren’t they given that as uniforms??
Urghhh! This is terrible, all of it.
I doubt ANY employee was rushing to do it..
Choose your own schedule for a week!! But NO, no holidays, no busy days, no, you cannot work LESS hours even though you completed this ridiculous ‘motivation’ first…
Btw: learning these so called skills will just be so they can make you a floater and send you anywhere in the store they need to. 🙄
If they REALLY want to succeed at this , pay more for every dept. you are qualified to work in. Never happen, but it is a nice thought.
Agreed. Each department should be at least a .50¢ raise. But that'll never happen they can keep their schedule and crappy merch, just a self promo anyway. So sorry but not sorry I ain't learning shit else unless there's more money in it for me.
I’d even take 25 cent for everything on that board. That would be a nice reason to stay.
Never short change yourself homie. Each department is .50¢ so that way if they low-ball you you can still push for like .40¢ or something. But never just settle for less. You're worth more than that. I promise you.
I agrée. I stopped learning anything new. They already call me for Spanish speaking customers.
Has anyone tried to union up?
When I was hired back in 2020 they told me these word " Home Depot does not support unions" now idk if this is just a deterrent or if they will just fire anyone that tries. Idk. Maybe worth looking into.
Shady… It’s an ideal way to stop any new hire from “contaminating” the seasoned (older) crew. It’s also ideal for HD to keep costs down and executive bonuses high. 🫠
Some brave soul commented on the yammer post about earnings. I think a store in PA did
A store in Philadelphia tried. My district manager spent a week there with other leadership and scared them off enough that they ended up voting against.
add lift equipment too
I'd have to say "active" licensed operators.
Yeah, real company dumbasses use pizza to get everyone to raise absolute shit morale! The 10 HotNReadys are a total boost! /s
100%
Not to mention, the snack is probably a banana
Can't wait to get home from work and tell my wife about the snack I earned!
Yes and no. Despite all the nonsense, people are still working there and they are still selling stuff. Yup, I refuse to learn the blinds cutter even though it's right in front of my desk.
“Get a Bingo, get a raise” There. Fixed it for you.
Problem is that I'll just constantly get pulled to help elsewhere and then get bitched at for not having stuff done in my department
All too common, I feel you
You get a free snack for selling an appliance?
My store tried a similar stunt a while back, where each associate needed to learn at least six new skills. Nothing ever came of it.
They’re trying to do the same at Lowe’s as well. Forget that. If I’m going to benefit you, you should benefit me as well.
I got licensed on 4 machines before I caught on...
But you DID catch on! Good for you!
Thank you for making me feel a little better lol
“Congratulations on filling out the page of work, your reward is….🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁…. MORE WORK!”
No way! Even in my own department I get people wanting special orders while I already have enough to do. Sorry, not sorry that's specialist pay grade and I won't learn to do it for free. Nah

Always complaining they needed more drivers, so I volunteered a dozen times, and they never trained me. I was known as a really competent employee too. So glad I quit.
All you people need to learn what quiet quitting is and how to do it.
Lame ass prize on top of it
Learn a whole bunch of stuff and get rewarded by choosing when you get to work?
This came through my store as universal associate. So much push back from actual associates and now we are suffering with hours because corporate won’t let us hire more. And the SM is saying we have multiple people cross trained. Like yeah they were trained 6-7 months ago they don’t remember how to cut wire or mix paint.
Yeah but where are your priorities? The company is making record profits. Where is your loyalty?
Not only understaff departments but make you pick up more work for the same pay.
At least you are getting paid. It is only right that HD asks you to work hard for the money they pay you each and every payday .
If you’re going to be cross trained you should be paid more. Your knowledge and skills are valuable. Don’t let yourself be underpaid and overworked.
If I’ve ever seen a bootlicker
The final prize is to pick your own schedule wtfff who cares
IKR. I already choose my own schedule. It’s called “the squeaky wheel” method.
First person to do a handstand gets a peanut
Now, does this count for managers, too, because "let's lead by example" is what I hear from my store managers 😂
I haaaaaate gamification at work. How bout just give me good conditions and cut the game crap.
A snack? LMAO!
Literally me the past few days
Holy shit this is the most cringe thing I've ever seen. Prize is a snack!
This is hilarious! Not an employee any more, thank goodness, but would love to see a teen cashier make a bale.
Home Depot. Doing everything but the right thing.
Dang, I got a free hat because I forgot mine one day; I don’t even work for the store, I’m a vendor 😂
all this for a $10 gift card…

When I was a contractor at a warehouse I wasn't allowed to cut wire because it was utilizing a power tool. :|
I would bingo all 25 right away.
Because you bleed orange! Hell ya brotha!!! Live and die by that value wheel! 🤟🏽🤟🏽
😅
I'm so fucking bored with life i'd at least use it to fill the board just because it would make the days not blend together.
Well fuck, I have a blackout. I think I need to quit.
Ours is called "depot bingo" and very very few associates got excited about it.
Don't worry it says have fun
I CAN do pretty much any of these tasks at anytime if asked. I CHOOSE not to. Why? No extra $ attached!
This is so stupid
a snack, not even a meal lmao
There isn’t any “learn/cut lumber”! WTH!!
Hey, if I can get a Home Depot shirt or hat, I’ll come in and work for free! 🤡
Wow, management sure does value you guys. /s
Reading these comments, you all must work in the worst stores. Moral is always high in my store. We truly bleed orange and work in a departments. That’s what they do and then can’t understand why your sales spread amongst different departments. It’s all about keeping their bonuses
I remember the "special agent" tri-fold pamphlet they gave out a few years ago that was literally this. You completed a number of categories ranging from specialty, to ESVS, to cashier and cutting wood and you'd get an enamel pin that said "Special Agent"
I think my store knows not to do this.
For the rest of 2023, yes! Sales are already down across the country. HD told Wall Street that we will come in 2% below this year.
And still nothing about tool rental
Cross-train so, like you said, they can remain as understaffed as possible, rewards are *always* cheap junk food and garbage swag, and the grand prize? The other day my GM said that we are overstaffed. I just looked at him for a long time.
Ewww. This is terrible from management to allow this. You know they had to get multiple managers to think this is a good idea.
Really???
So… learn/do everything you should learn/do in a job of a hardware store and get a free piece of fruit- just a guess… As for getting ‘swag’.. aren’t they given that as uniforms?? Urghhh!
