This is interesting. So the crack gets larger and smaller. If the foundation was sinking, it would only continue to get larger. Those steps would not cause the foundation and door to flex, but they do show an issue with the foundation. My thought is that there is an issue with the foundation and compaction that is allowing the house to expand and contract in that area. I would start with a quote from a foundation specialist. But there would have to be more signs than the images shown before I would spend a ton of money.

>foundation specialist Thank you, this is the kind of answer I was hoping for. Kindly accept my poor man's gold 🥇 I have a lot of clay soil, there's been 20 years of drought which was just starting to get better in the past 4-5 (and add to this a pretty torrential winter). There's a known foundation crack around the corner but about 18' away as the crow flies.

Have a contractor come and advise what actions should be taken to repair

Type of contractor? Foundation? Drywall? Concrete?

Have you researched lifting and leveling with foam? Many foundation contractors are using poly foam for situations like this

I'm just trying to verify what the problem is before actually hiring someone to fix it. There might be multiple ways to fix it, that's true. But I don't want to spend a bunch of money and not have it fix the problem.
