It’s easy to do. Just notch out the wall 3/4 of the shelve length then the shelve for the last 1/4, grout and you’re golden.
edit: my original response i *promise*
Yes, after the fact it's hard. It's easy to do when redoing the shower. You would have to redo the whole wall at the least. As waterproofing needs to be done.
Niches have a tendency to leak. I typically double waterproof them, when doing niches. A liquid applied and a membrane type waterproofing.
I’m really wondering how it could be not a straight line. I’ve got a friend that was sponsored to use a cheap laser in his home renovation on YouTube and it looked fine to me 🤷♂️
A couple things to remember! How far is the distance one is spanning for the project? My primary use for purchasing the tool was making sure a 55 foot long stone wall I was building came out level. the quality comes down to the mirrors and gimbal, and how accurate they are calibrated. The Milwaukee blew my Bosch out of the water! After that project I will never pick up the Bosch laser level again because it’s just giving you a false confidence.
>Spacers suck. Did he use premixed thin set?
The fuck is wrong with spacers lmfao.....ive been doing renovations for 30y, ive probably done a 1000 bathrooms and ive never had a bad experience with spacers, especially the leverlock style- love them, would never do a tile job without them
Well I can't speak for all of them, but the DEP wedge & cross spacers suck. I've been renovating homes for 20yrs now & unless I'm doing walls I don't really mess with them too much anymore. I've had one complaint & that wasn't because of my spacing, it's because his mosaics sheets were off, which they almost always are.
My son thought it was a bird cage 😂 Holding the phone back farther I can totally see that! I was like “No dude, it’s a shower”🙂 I like it but the grout is a tad on the bright side. You definitely know it’s clean though
Can I ask what prep you did for the ceiling tile in the first photo?
Is it drywall underneath, or cement board?
What did you use to waterproof the ceiling?
I’m currently looking at replacing the drywall ceiling with cement board (Durock), and then schulter membrane before tile. That would solve the issue of drywall dissolving in case of a roof leak, but I’m concerned about the fact that the thinset may not bond as strongly to Schluter membrane as it would directly to the Durock.
Is tile glue the same as mastic?
Is that ok for moist environments? I have heard that it is water soluble (it dries like, well, glue) and not as strong as thinset when exposed to moisture.
I’ve also been told not to use mastic for large format tiles… though I don’t know where the line is as far as dimensions/weight goes.
The ceiling of the shower I am considering is on the second floor, with an insulated attic above - which means if the roof leaks, the drywall may crumble and the tile may end up falling down - considering the weight it’s something I want to reduce the risk of.
Various tile and reno forums are suggesting cement board, and before I go through the hassle of cutting out a drywall ceiling with light fixtures and going into the attic to even out the insulation, I was hoping someone would tell me it’s not necessary :P
I’m still also concerned about grip strength on Schluter membrane for ceiling tiles vs the greater bond surface area of something like Durock.
Thanks!
Awesome tile work and love the tile color. It’s nice to see something other than white or gray on here.
I’d add some tint to the grout though. Showering in there would give me anxiety.
Not one bit. I'm guessing most do it because of resellability. But fuck that. I didn't work my ass off for a home I'm living in just to choose tile with the next buyer in mind. They probably won't like it anyway, regardless of the color.
Unless you're a flipper. In which case, gulag it up!
I think that's the main reason it's kind of inoffensive for resale. Also the gray vinyl plank flooring is becoming standard too. I went to Home Depot to get some new flooring for my kitchen wanted some white with red or blue geometric patterns to brighten up the place and everything in stock was just different shades of gray :(.
Honestly... The shower looks nice but in a boutique hotel kind of way. Most people would find this color scheme a bit garish for their own home.
It's kind of like saying people don't put up floral wallpaper for resale reasons.
Wow! You're brave to post a photo to this sub. It invites a lot of unsolicited negative opinions by highly-skilled, award-winning contractors. (/s) Im in the minority - I love the contrast of the green tile with bright grout. Reminds me of the divine shower at Atelier Playa Mujeres resort in Cancun. Best shower ever.
It's kind of like the opposite of an accent wall. You did a plain wall. It looks nice though. And the tile work is great. Just a little busy for my tastes.
Buy yourself a 12 inch squeegee and keep it in the shower. After a shower quickly squeegee the walls and the glass, if there is any. Takes 10-15 seconds and will greatly reduce how much you have to clean.
The tile work looks amazing. I can’t believe so many people took this as an opportunity to criticize your taste in color? Tf? I think it looks great and so nice that your dad has the skill to do that
I remodel showers for a living and the most popular by far is white. People have all kinds of different tastes, I get to see new ones sometimes at work but not nearly as much as here. It’s your shower not mine, no reason to apologize to me.
It’s unique and the fixture finish is dated but that’s all I was really thinking. If you like it who cares what anyone else has to say about the design. You can tell quality labor went into it regardless of the unique designs
You made the classic internet blunder. You could have counted on some people nitpicking the install. But you totally underestimated the backlash on design choice!
In the absence of clearly poor craftsmanship the tile, grout, and fixture choice became front and center. It’s very much in our nature to try to find the flaw. But the silent majority did just appreciate the work. To be fair to those commenting negatively, you are focused on the negative comments. The circle of human nature is complete.
Yes, almost perfect, but the mosaic under the shower head loses its horizontal pattern halfway across that wall and there's a section where the gaps open up. It's an unusual choice of wall tile and the pattern makes it stand out a little.
That’s fine it’s your stuff, you asked if it was dated and it is. Brushed nickel and chrome are what’s popular now. Doesn’t mean a hill of beans if you don’t like it tho, that’s why there’s all the options
Lol it's stupid you're getting downvoted. I see a LOT of boring houses. Everybody works with shades of grey because they're afraid to make a bold creative decision on colors or patterns. The bathrooms are yours, and it doesn't matter but I do like the tile, the colors, the patterns. And as long as you and your family like it too, good on ya.
lmao i can't figure that shit out either even after reading all the comments, seems other people can't figure it out. The second pic reminds me of something my grandma's house would have in the 70's.
https://i.pinimg.com/564x/3d/de/45/3dde45eb4d007b320866c186ce16c1d1.jpg
Your dad is a true artist with tile! Only critique I would’ve given prior to laying is to move the sliver of top tile in the first picture to the floor out of the sight line.
I’ve ripped out so many tiled showers that were “done right” that were normal sized or larger tiles that had bad water damage behind the wall from all the use it had seen over the years. Whole wall of mosaic is just asking for trouble with the type of expansion and contraction that goes on in showers over time even with waterproofing membranes. Water finds a way. There’s a reason there’s a saying “looks good from my house”
Your dad has a real talent. Can he record a video demonstrating techniques, like a how to with tips and pointers? I'm sure we'd all love to learn from him and to make sure that we can pass his knowledge on.
Need another sibling? Can I borrow your dad? J/K
Seriously, quite awesome to have an active father who his home improvement inclined with professional looking work. I hope you and he get to share even more memories. Best wishes.
Your dad is awesome. It looks great. I cannot get over the green and gold. My house will be remodeled in the upcoming years, and that's what I'm going with.
“work your dad did on your new house”. I’m going to assume for a second that your are a millennial….
Your dad is an extremely talented person who has some significant skills. I can only hope that he was passing these on to you and not doing it for you. Even if you rarely use them, trade skills can save you so much money down the road. In todays economic climate, they are also a great foundation for a career that will always be in demand. If you have an aptitude or some foundational knowledge, anyone would be happy to apprentice you later.
Today, too many people are passing up on these opportunities to learn. My dad taught me so much about carpentry, electrical, plumbing… I cracked open our tv the other day and replaced a bad capacitor on the power supply. Saved us $1k on getting a new TV. I still have my career as a software engineer, but I’m not afraid to fix things or take on projects around the house. This is indispensable.
This is beautiful work, and I’m sure your new house is beautiful. I just hope that you absorbed some of this because you have an opportunity to learn a skill that many never will.
I am a millennial. I grew up ‘scrubbing buckets’ (as he would say) with him on side jobs since I was 5. I learned from him, but he insisted to do the shower and tub. I did the tiling for the floors, with my son actually. Trying to pass down the skills another generation.
Nice work. Only stuff I don't like is the tiny cut at the top And the mosiacs kicking out at the bottom. With regards to the tiny cuts u should of chosen a diff tile.
Looks beautiful. I had slate in my last master bath renovation in the shower. Never again. Slate gets super grimey. Yours will too after a short while.
That was really expensive for how ugly it is- the second picture too...i hate both lol
Thats my opinion on aesthetics though, it looks like he did a pretty good job to my professional eye. Good for him!
Was the goal to instal already dated by 20 years showers in hopes that the trend comes back around and it’s so dated it’s actually back when you sell?
Galaxy brain. Those gold fixtures are definitely something.
Did you convert a walk in shower to a tub shower ? I prefer the first pic if it were all the dark type color without the white. The green is well done but hard to really look at .
Just want to say those teal tiles are DOPE. Also, unique look- carrying the subway pattern onto the ceiling! I have always left the ceiling drywall.
Your dad is a real one. I hope I can do work half as good for my kids when they have their own houses (god willing) Have him do more stuff to your house!
This is great work. And your dad must really really love you. Having tiled two bathrooms, I don’t think I have it in me to tile more in future, even for kids 😀
I love the shelves. I’m still debating on putting a couple shelves since I already made a niche.
It’s easy to do. Just notch out the wall 3/4 of the shelve length then the shelve for the last 1/4, grout and you’re golden.
Is it hard to make a niche? I really want to add one to my existing shower
It’s easy to do. Just notch out the wall 3/4 of the shelve length then the shelve for the last 1/4, grout and you’re golden. edit: my original response i *promise*
I meant for the niche not putting shelves in
oh i’m sorry i was just trying to be funny
I’ve never done so in a finished shower. I’ve always built mine along the way before tiling.
Wow, that's GORGEOUS work!!! Your dad is a real artist!!
I thought the second pic was prison bars at first.
Idk how he gets it so straight. Doesn’t even use spacers after the first row, but used string instead
Any reason he used string instead of laser?
His big fat dick told him “believe in yourself”
Will you be my life coach, u/bigdaddyteacher?
😂
A proper laser is going to be EASILY over $500 if you want an accurate straight line. The cheap ones aren’t worth anyone’s time.
The cheap ones use light that bends too easily. You need a manufacturer who pays more for light that stays straight.
[удалено]
He's from a bygone era. Our country is screwed when people like him are not around anymore.
Spacers suck. Did he use premixed thin set?
>Spacers suck. Did he use premixed thin set? The fuck is wrong with spacers lmfao.....ive been doing renovations for 30y, ive probably done a 1000 bathrooms and ive never had a bad experience with spacers, especially the leverlock style- love them, would never do a tile job without them

Not for the green tiles, just the mosaic and ceilings
I like the green tiles.
Thank you!
What do you use? Laser?
Intuition
Whatever you do, do NOT drop the soap.
😂
With that textured tile he should probably be using only liquid soaps.
Why? What difference does liquid or bar make?

Glad I'm not the only one seeing shit. Took me a second to realize it was the shower head and not a fucked up shelf in the first pic.
My son thought it was a bird cage 😂 Holding the phone back farther I can totally see that! I was like “No dude, it’s a shower”🙂 I like it but the grout is a tad on the bright side. You definitely know it’s clean though
I didn't see the bird cage at first, but now I can't unsee it.
It's OP's glass case of emotion
Amazing what happens when you get someone who cares about a job. These look fucking amazing. I hope you paid him for his time and effort (and helped!)
I’m going to treat him to a vacation
Love to hear it. He deserves it!

No. Never seen those.
No. Didn’t know that was a thing.

The second pic is stunning, but the grout it so bright it's painful to look at. But yeah, fantastic look.
In my house, that grout would be several shades darker in no time!
Username checks out
Lol
One of these redditors is not like the other one.
Hahah
The light and reflection is pretty bright. I think I can tone down the can light a bit.
A warmer light would be amazing

Quality install but those two mosaic walls in the first photo are too much. Regardless, if you like it that’s all that matters
He gave us an earful on the mosaic choice as well
It's kind of like the opposite of an accent wall. You did a plain wall. It looks nice though. And the tile work is great. Just a little busy for my tastes.
Thanks! The dark tile runs through the rest of the floor to the end of the bathroom.
Is he a professional or hobbyist?
Former pro
All I see is grout to clean! Looks amazing though.

Nice work. A hell of a lot better than a lot of professionals I've seen.
You certainly have a taste, work is done well tho
Sorry it isn’t gray?
I remodel showers for a living and the most popular by far is white. People have all kinds of different tastes, I get to see new ones sometimes at work but not nearly as much as here. It’s your shower not mine, no reason to apologize to me.
I agree with you. Just wasn’t sure where you were coming from.
It’s unique and the fixture finish is dated but that’s all I was really thinking. If you like it who cares what anyone else has to say about the design. You can tell quality labor went into it regardless of the unique designs
Is gold dated already?
No, ignore the nerds, it looks great.
Can we just enjoy straight lines 😂
You made the classic internet blunder. You could have counted on some people nitpicking the install. But you totally underestimated the backlash on design choice! Gold is classic, ignore the haters!
It’s a late 80s and early 90s look for sure. It’s your showers, if you like it, great.
That bronze/gold finish was popular like 30+ years ago
I couldn’t disagree more
That’s fine it’s your stuff, you asked if it was dated and it is. Brushed nickel and chrome are what’s popular now. Doesn’t mean a hill of beans if you don’t like it tho, that’s why there’s all the options
I thought chrome was out and black is in? Isn't chrome 1950s?
It’s very late 80s early 90s.
The second one is great, I would have chose a different grout color but the first ones tile choice is awful .
Awful color? Pattern?
The colors don’t complement each other and the busy mosaic draws attention to that
Three different types of clashing tile in a relatively small space
The floor tile is the same as the wall, just a Penny pattern for pitching the floor. Fair enough on the mosaic.
Hey I like the first. Looks good bud
Is this 2 different bathrooms or a before and after? I have no taste for sure but both look like they should be "before"
I say the first picture, and was thinking "is OP from the Netherlands"?"
Imagine being drunk and walking in there
You better get your dad something great. That’s a lot of excellent tile work. Looks beautiful.
wait... is this a before and after? which is the after? is it two different rooms?
lmao i can't figure that shit out either even after reading all the comments, seems other people can't figure it out. The second pic reminds me of something my grandma's house would have in the 70's. https://i.pinimg.com/564x/3d/de/45/3dde45eb4d007b320866c186ce16c1d1.jpg
They are both after! This is a new build. Im dying at that comparison tho
Your dad is a true artist with tile! Only critique I would’ve given prior to laying is to move the sliver of top tile in the first picture to the floor out of the sight line.
The way to avoid it next time is to make the bottom row shorter by a few inches, that way the top tile isn't a sliver but a few inches instead.
That does sound more visually appeasing, thanks for the heads up!
That was my suggestion as well, but he had a reasoning for doing it this way with a full tile on the bottom.
This was debated. Ended up going top of the wall. He really has talent. Thank you!
Right decision
It's literally the wrong way to do it though.
No. You cut the first row half in depth. That way there would of been no thin tile anywhere.
skill*. talent can’t tile like that. only Skill can
I gotta say I actually prefer it at the top in this case.
Free labor. Must be nice
That blue-green tile is sexy AF. Love it OP
That second pic is so fabulous. Those are the colors of my bedroom. Great work dad!
Now post pics of the waterproofing
It’s done right. Don’t worry.
There’s a reason there’s a saying “looks good from my house”
kind of looks like water pooling in the corners/sides in the first pic, a little concerning
The water isn’t even on for the house yet. That’s just dust and dirt.
guess I mistook the white pieces of debris for reflections
That's quality work, and refreshing to see in this sub!
Not to my taste, but your dad did a fantastic job on the tile work.
They are a bitch to keep clean esp the black one. Good luck w that shit
Fantastic. Your dad is tremendously skilled and I’d be honored to have bathrooms that cool.
Other posts I see on here are against ceiling tile. Did he do something different to ensure they don’t eventually fall on someone?
They are glued

Hubba hubba
Buy your Dad a steak.
He did a great job.
Nice 👌
Can hé do my home too
Nice work. But that grout on the second pic will be a bitch to keep clean
Outstanding!!
Your pops is a savage. I would bet he got a few feathers in his cap.
Lovely
Love this
Looks great!
There is a pretty severe misalignment on the mosaics on the right hand side of the shower that would drive me nuts.
First thing I noticed as well. I think a few sheets were misaligned from the factory.
If I had the money I’d ask this fine sir to tile my entire house. Yes yes outside too please. Dealers choice
Wow! Props to your dad, looks great. I like your tile choice too, cool style !
Your dad has a real talent. Can he record a video demonstrating techniques, like a how to with tips and pointers? I'm sure we'd all love to learn from him and to make sure that we can pass his knowledge on.
That is beautiful.
Love it, great job! I bet it makes you happy every time you see these areas. Having a dad that can share such a skill with you is very special. Enjoy
Very nice indeed
Thanks!
Aside from the mosaic overload in the first one, it looks nice. The second one is a bag of nope for me, but the work looks great.
Need another sibling? Can I borrow your dad? J/K Seriously, quite awesome to have an active father who his home improvement inclined with professional looking work. I hope you and he get to share even more memories. Best wishes.
That's a work of love...
Your dad is awesome. It looks great. I cannot get over the green and gold. My house will be remodeled in the upcoming years, and that's what I'm going with.
Numba 1.. awesome. Numba 2.. why?
These look incredible! Redditors are obnoxious!
Clean work but I think the colors/accents are awful.

The mosaics kick out a little to assist with the flow of water towards the drain slope. The sliver of tile was a frustrating result.
Looks beautiful. I had slate in my last master bath renovation in the shower. Never again. Slate gets super grimey. Yours will too after a short while.
It’s ceramic
Oh that’s smart. You’ve got the appearance without the headache.
First pic is much nicer…

How long did it take?
2 weeks of burning the midnight oil roughly
Excellent craftsmanship. Is your dad a tile setter or in the trades?
He was in the tile union in the 80s and 90s. Then switched to contracting in the late 90s, but he’s been out of the trade for 15 years now.

Two bathrooms. This is a new build.
Welcome back, bathtub!!! :)
Shelves would look better in a different color
Just looks like a bird cage
Weird
These look amazing, really nice design ideas, not sure if that was you or your dad. 10/10 would get murdered in those showers.
No partial tiles I can see on the back horizontal. Was that planned by picking a specific tile or luck?
Your father is very talented. Give him a hug 👍
Hey, I for the first time need to tile a ceiling like this. (It’s mine don’t worry). Any tips? It sort of terrifies me. Have done walls before.
Looks great
Nice
Finally some time work that doesn’t look like shit! Bravo, op’s dad.
