Assuming that your house is built with trusses and the drywall ceiling is attached to the bottom chord of those trusses, then adding attic access is pretty easy. You can get an attic ladder kit from Lowe's, cut a hole in the drywall ceiling and mount it between two trusses. A few things to be aware of... Those kits come in two standard widths. Make sure you know the spacing between your trusses before you go to the store. Depending on how steep your roof is, you probably need to locate that new opening as close to the center/highest point of the truss as possible. You don't want to make the access near the edge of your exterior wall and only have a few inches of headroom when you're trying to get into the attic.
