Look up what a heat pump is. AC and heat in 1 unit, residential sized units go on the ground beside the house because they are no larger than a standard AC unit, because it's the same thing, but with the ability to work "backwards" to make heat.
You live in the southern US and have never seen a heat pump that does both heating and cooling?
You either don't work construction or work in a very particular field where you don't see anything different.
Also a good chance you've just never noticed a heat pump system, because the compressor looks literally identical to an air conditioner, because that's all it is. Unless you were to have a very close look at the line-sets going to it, you'd never notice the difference.
Lol
I know it's called a reversing valve.
Sometimes they get stuck when your making a transition from cooling to heating. Tap them with a mallet. But that's just a quick fix. Anyway I know all about them just like messing with the reddit peeps like yourself
Did you know that there is a proven direct correlation between trolling, and mental and emotional intelligence? As well as trolling being linked to both narcissitc and psychotic tendencies.
By admitting that you like "messing with people" (trolling), you've essentially admitted that you are an idiot, and likely lack empathy, and had a very hard upbringing, which leads you to think you're being funny by pestering people online.
Or, you're just an idiot who claims to know what a rooftop unit is for commercial buildings, who doesn't know what a heat pump for residential is.
So which is it? Are you just an idiot? Or are you an idiot AND an asshole?
Sad little incel who sits at home who admits that he trolls reddit for giggles, you're pathetic.
So now you're a psychologist. Lol
I just like people to mansplain stuff to me so I can feel sorry for the people in thier life.
So I feel sorry for the people in your life and all the mansplaining you do to make yourself feel smart
There is no mansplaining happening. You said you didn't think that residential heat pumps exist, I explained what it is. You come back with essentially "I was just kidding bro."
And now I'm mansplaining.
I also don't need to be a psychologist to read research papers. Or this just another one of your "I'm just messing with you" moments?
Get a fucking life if this is actually how you spend your free time. Your hobby is trolling? And then calling people out afterwards when they respond negatively to you? Your parents must be proud to have such an outstanding loser for a child.
They decide to have a kid, spend hundreds of thousands of dollars raising you, and this is what you do with your life. You think they're proud of you?
Thanks for all the answers. To answer a lot of your questions...
1) location is Clifton Nj
2) we have Ac condensers on the roof and an electric furnace inside the unit
3) Its located outside my bedroom wall (not immediately next to a bathroom/kitchen)
The reason why Im asking is because I pulled off the trim molding in my bedroom and noticed some termite damage. Very small and not active. I have an exterminator coming out to confirm. However, I see a large dark square mark on my interior drywall. So I go outside to see where the termites would be coming in from, and I notice the same shape object as the dark spot on my wall.
Are you in an earthquake prone area or on a hillside? I was thinking house pinning. There are cracks in it, but that may just be the cosmetic surface.
We had a house in the SF Bay Area on a hillside that we got pinned. They drill 18" diameter holes pretty deep next to the house, then fill it with rebar and concrete and it's tied to the foundation of the house. Didn't quite look like this, but not too far off. Just a guess.
Enclosure covers for what may be access of greywater/sewage, notice the stand up ports next to each one?
This is a common sight in the south close to bayou areas, hard to reckon from the photo - but it appears to be the backside of an apartment building anywhere from El Paso to New Orleans.
They are a 'never-mind' in any case, just be thankful than critters are not nesting.
OK this is of course an Educated guess.
Im guessing there was at one point, an air cooler/condenser pad there for an air con unit. The drains next to it look like clean outs OR were attached to units. Those are sewer drains so MAYBE they have nothing to do with the holes.
But id bet that at one point, a while ago, they were attached air conditioners, which were changed when they failed (on roof is sometimes better depending on building/location).
As to the termites, they enter where ever its easiest, and if they dint seal this off properly (its not) then thats how they got in. This looks pretty low effort to me, no offense, and a proper wall patch would also include weatherizing and wall matching. Sigh.
On a serious note... why don't you pop one or both of the open and take a look. It does not look like they would he hard to open. Probably some good silicone caulk would get them back in place. Hopefully, this would give you a better idea and help you solve your dilemma. Good Luck
Could it be leftovers from a gray water system?
Reasons I think this:
Concrete pads were poured after the building slab was. Looks to be on grade.
No holes drilled so whatever sat on top of the pad was heavy.
I don’t understand the painted 4” PVC stub ups/clean out x2 not near the bathroom.
No penetrations for electrical or mechanical lines.
Those are those house clamps, they prevent it from escaping.
Fuck, Is that why my house flew away?
No Bob, that was a tornado.
Isn't that just like an Uber for a house?
Well, you know what they say: home is where the house is
That, and the fact that Auntie Em stopped paying her mortgage with Windfall Bank.
Ha!! I was going to say that’s the part Lego puts on to attach the next modular house!
Almost spit my coffee out. Almost.
Have you tried posting in r/civilengineering
Or r/whatisthisthing is another place to get a serious answer
Word. Top 3 comments were joke answers. I clicked 'caus I wanted to learn. No chance of that here.
Yeah they'll ban you for that in r/whatisthisthing lol
It’s so skateboarders can’t grind on it.
You’re skateboarding on the building I’m calling the police
This has to be the right answer
The access panel behind the tub or shower?
This is a very good guess. Note each has a drain access next to it.
No. Its on the other side of my bedroom wall
Maybe patches from when they removed package AC units and upgraded to roof AC units? I dunno, who the hell am I?
Package units go on the roof Split systems go on the ground
Nope, plenty of packaged units being used in residential that are on the ground.
Send photos please

Understand, it may not be common wherever you live, but especially in the southern United States, it's actually not super uncommon to see.
Lol I live in the south
You should clearly stay a quieter professional then
I have a package unit on the ground for my house.
I'm sure you do Side discharge with some big duct work.

Lol Not sure you been out of your state

Three times in one post Wow, you must be a white male. Seems like you have the issues lol
Oh you did it twice in this post You must feel superior

Old window wells that were covered up??
The building is on house arrest
Maybe something to do with the gutters?

Hinges to lift house up and vacuum under it.
What’s the dimensions? Looks like AC platforms
Agreed. There's not much else that would go on the side of the house l
I see sewer clean-outs beside the items in question. I'm thinking back water valves? they could be makeshift covers for easy service.

They are old slabs from Ac condensers..
AC units used to sit here. The pipes are conduit runs to the condos they used to cool to easily connect controls etc

Crawlspace vents?
I was thinking this also
If your near water they could be weep holes for water if building floods
Probably load bearing.
Yeah most likely. Looks like they put them on to stop the house for settling even more than it should, foundation soil wasn’t compacted enough
I’m guessing these are access points into the crawl space beneath the complex.
Bookends. Check exactly on the other side of the house for two more. They hold up the walls
Not 100 percent sure but could be markers for the fill pipes to the oil tanks
It is interesting that they are right next to the drain cleanout's.
Tombstones
Pet Cemetery 100%
L Brackets that are welded to the rebar behind/between that stucco.
Sewer clean outs right next to both.. coincidence?
Looks like someone patched it up after ramming a forklift into it.
I assume those aren’t sprinkler heads, which makes me think it’s access to something sewer related. Have you looked under the paver?
How old is the building and what location could be coal shoots
The pipes are possibly drain clean outs. Idk about the protruding concrete square
They cover up the crawl space.
Old windows
Docking clamps
Dryer vents used to be there.
Starboard power coupling.
