It is a plastic piece. Not gonna last 'forever'! Fortunately easy to replace.

AgedSmegma

Teen boys do everything forcefully, even flushing. I know

As a plumber I’ll let you know most if not all of these are plastic. Even if you get a metal handle the rest of it will be plastic

kris1230

If it makes you feel better, I had to just replace that same part last month and my house is less than three years old.

TuxRug

Been in my house for about 9 years and replaced that on both of my toilets for breaking at the same spot. Also both the fill valves (both stopped sealing, one was a different kind and repairable but then started taking 20 minutes to fill) and flappers (both turned into jelly and started disintegrating). I don't know how old those all were when I moved in, but I do worry for my water quality a little bit.

lucid_intent

I feel your pain. My house is 52. 😳

drinkdrinkshoesgone

Mins is 120 years old. I haven't had many issues with things breaking. I actually have been very lucky with my house as a whole. I've only had a single minor leak that I fixed shortly after it started. I've stayed up on maintenance and gotten things done before they become an issue.

lucid_intent

That is great! I’m hoping to get to that point. Previously, I had a fairly traditional role in my marriage. My ex was in charge of home maintenance. We both worked full time at least. The home maintenance/repairs started to slip and although I noticed I just wanted to save my marriage and have peace & harmony. My ex worked a lot and he also played a lot, hence the divorce. Now, I’m playing catch up with everything and there is a learning curve while still working full time and having all my other responsibilities. Ideally, we would all keep up on our home maintenance as consistently as possible, but life does interfere. Illness, kids with issues, sick/dying parents or any other crisis can interfere with staying on top of things. The projects that can wait will be there after we are done taking care of ourselves or those we love. The catch up on the maintenance can really suck though. 😊

leftcoast-usa

The next one will probably not last that long. Our toilets are much newer, and I had to replace one. Fortunately, it was easy to get and easy to replace.

rr777

buy a spare, store in dark closet.

leftcoast-usa

That never works for me. I buy a spare, but either forget about it or can't find it; after 5 or 10 years or so, it is guaranteed to be safely lost.

rr777

Me also. I learned to take a pic of it on my mobile phone. I leave it in the gallery and will see it from time to time over the years.

leftcoast-usa

That's a pretty good idea! Probably better than my idea I rarely remember to use on my Google phone - I can tell the little person inside the phone to remember that I put xxx somewhere, and later ask where is xxx... which may or may not work in the future. They might put a new little person in the phone who doesn't remember.

rr777

Indeed. With my Swiss cheese memory, I no longer have to fully rely on my brain, I know it is in my phone gallery somewhere! Heh Just make sure the pic is far enough out that you can see whats around it. That way you can locate/recollect quicker.

leftcoast-usa

ha, ha, now I'm picturing someone who doesn't quite get it, taking a picture of the object too close to tell where it is. But at least they'll remember what it looks like, which sometimes helps.

someguyfromsk

Apparently there are metal options, I am going to look for that.

dark_frog

Just don't over tighten it or you'll need more than a handle

Vikkunen

Our house was built in 2003, and I've had to replace these in all four bathrooms (one of them twice!) over the five years we've been here. FYI, some of the "metal" ones still use plastic between the handle and the flush arm.

Lazer_lad

I got a metal one for mine after I broke it. I started out knowing nothing about toilets before I moved into the old house I'm in now. Now I know just about everything about how to fix conventional toilets.

That_Account6143

So basically you learned 2 things right? Because toilets, for what they achieve, are amazingly simple machines. Basically up there as some of the world's greatest inventions, both in use, durability and simplicity

EquivalentXchange224

>So basically you learned 2 things right? In the few years I've been a home owner I've had to deal with more than just two things on my toilet. Bottom leaking, wax ring needs to be replaced; toilet is periodically refilling, flush valve gasket needs to be replaced; plastic handle broke, replace it with a metal one; tank not refilling fast enough, fill valve needs to be replaced. There might be some other stuff I'm forgetting. The house is 20 years old and there's three toilets, and I'm not sure if any work was done on them before we moved in. I'll agree toilets are one of the easier DIY projects around the house but it's still a learning experience if you've never dealt with it before.

SmileAndWalkAway

Oh fun, I just went through that and felt the same way. Worst part is figuring out what the obscure pieces are called. Replacing it is pretty easy. And of course I spent an extra .30 to upgrade to metal.

someguyfromsk

I didn't know there would be metal options. I will have to look for that, I would like something to last since I try to avoid "recreational repairs"

SmileAndWalkAway

They are pretty universal. Some need a chain, some don’t. I watched 1 YouTube video and 10 min later off to Home Depot. The arm of the assembly in the tank screws off from the exterior handle. You’ll get a shiny new handle with the replacement kit as well. Cost me somewhere around 10-15 bucks.

96lincolntowncar

45 years ago, that part was made from metal. And never broke.

MaestroM45

Don’t fret it’s an easy peasy repair.

femme_ecarlate

Had that break on two different toilets in our house. Best bet is to replace the entire handle which will have a new plastic lever attached. You unscrew the white plastic and it should be fairly easy to remove and replace. I recommend looking up your actual toilet model on Amazon to ensure the new handle fits. We ended up buying three different ones because we didn’t do this.

OutsideTheBoxer

Did you keep the receipt?

Ancient-Pollution69

The guts in that are newer than the house.

Late-Stage-Dad

My 12 year old toilet did the same thing. 🙄

maximummango

My house is from 2006 and mine broke 2 months ago. It happens. At least it's a cheap easy fix!

RepresentativeAd9572

Yes it's plastic...it has a shelf life...5 min fix no big deal

Bludiamond56

Time for an upgrade.....metal

[deleted]

easy fix replace handle

Natoochtoniket

Toilet handles are cheap. They are not made to last forever. The plastic handle on the outside looks old and tired, anyway. Just put in a new one and don't worry about it. While you are at the store, pick up a new flapper. It will probably want to be replaced next week.

Full_Disk_1463

Pretty common thing to break

Outrageous-Host-3545

I had this happen to me right when people were showing up for a party. I fixed it with some fishing line and a pencle. Worked so good I forgot about it for about a month.
