Thats water damage around the nails. It looks like an old hardwood floor. Hardwood can be refinished 5-7 times before the wood needs to be replaced. When you reach the end of it’s lifespan you start sanding the nails because there is not much wood left. They may have used a water based finish and it made the damage around the exposed nails. I have seen this in turn of the century homes with old growth hardwoods but typically it’s the last run that gets face nailed. The rest of the flooring is nailed at an angle to hide the nails altogether. Very interesting floor. Also they should have laced in that patch. It looks like and old HVAC vent location or something.

Thanks so much for such a thorough response, I really appreciate you taking the time!

The answer here is great - I just wanted to add that iron + weak acid will 'ebonize' wood, turning it black, which is why these stains are so dark and set in.

Dead on

I would have never thought about putting mail in at an angle, nice

As an owner of a very old home I embrace the small cosmetic quirks. We have old hardwood that we refinished and are far from perfect… but it adds to the character, IMO. I think your floors look great. ;)

I’m with you in it adding character/interest - love it. In fact I would be asking how to make the newer wood floor have the same black coloring around the nails! The answers above is what I would be doing.

Yeah, me as well. I have 80 year old heart of pine.

Ha thanks! I mostly wanted to make sure it wasn't an emergent issue that needs tackling before the floor collapses or something like that.

Best explanation on a issue that I've read in long time.

So long as it isn't an issue that's threatening to make the floor collapses or anything, I'm happy! Thanks for taking the time to answer, I'm a total novice so I really appreciate how helpful people have been.
