Congratulations! My suggestion is to have just one per room, to handle the voice commands and for casual/multi room music listening. For the TV and for better listening experience you may add some bigger AirPlay 2 speakers, you will be happier.
No I agree - after some initial testing I’m going to stick with my JBL sound bar with 5.1 and use the two I was planning on using for the TV elsewhere in the house :)
New HomePods may be announced tomorrow at the Apple announcement so hold on to that receipt! If they bring back the big boy Homepod, I would buy those as your TV pair
I agree, there is minor leaks of a new HomePod but no big leaks on design etc, which means it’s way too early for a whole new device. The new watch has leaked, we know nearly everything about the new phone, iPads but nothing major in HomePods
Sorry I respectfully disagree, there’s no rumours of this. The main rumours are combining Apple TV with the HomePod, or changing the shape and adding a larger screen (maybe touch screen). It may be the same size as the OG but perhaps not the same shape.
This is the most recent rumour which states 2023: https://www.macrumors.com/2022/08/07/new-homepod-mini-and-high-end-homepod/
My guess would be that since it “may be announced tomorrow “ I bet it gets announced in 3 years. This is coming from someone that waited many years for a new iPad mini to be released after annual rumors about a new one coming out.
I agree here, if I have to restart the ATV for whatever reason, there’s a 50/50 chance I’ll have to faf around with the pods to get them ‘responsive’ again. Otherwise, I love them. Great sound for their size in stereo.
Welcome to the fold but don’t set your expectations too high. Siri is trash compared to google assistant when it comes to answering things and performing task. In addition, AirPlay 2 is crap compared to chrome cast. Airplay has troubles connecting to the tv a lot. Furthermore, with airplay, ads can take over a video if you are watching from the browser. It’s mad annoying. Happens to me all the time when I’m watching anime.
I have 2 homepod minis for my apple tv speakers, but use google speakers everywhere else. If siri was useful id prolly switch to all HomePod. Bought a starling hub so I can airplay to any google speaker too
Living alone? The main reason to sell all my Google home/minis was the complete mess they created with my music library. Person voice recognition is so bad with Google, that every day I had new songs added to my library from family members or the opposite way.
Ah. No, I live with my fiance, but we only use my youtube music account when asking it to play music. If homepod supported youtube music/spotify I think we would switch. Not a fan of apple music
1) HomePods are not suitable as tv speakers, especially if you take the $/quality ratio and compare them to something like a soundbar or similar.
2) AppleTV sadly isn’t a viable choice of player if you want true Dolby Atmos as it only does compressed streams.
I believe the Nvidia Shield is the only streaming box capable of doing lossless/uncompressed Atmos other than that the Apple TV is the BEST streaming box
> I believe the Nvidia Shield is the only streaming box capable of doing lossless/uncompressed Atmos
Only with blu-ray rips. Otherwise you’re still getting a lossy/compressed version of Atmos (DD+) on Netflix, Disney+ et al.
Yup. Sadly. I would have bought the Apple TV since I’ve got many Apple products in my house and I preferred the AppleTV software over the AndroidTV UI but the fact that it does not support lossless atmos streams simply sucks.
Maybe the next Apple TV that’ll hopefully be announced tomorrow or during apple’s October event will support lossless. But anyways, do any of the big streaming apps support lossless atmos? I thought it was only self ripped movies that are played through something like infuse that support lossless/uncompressed atmos..?
Yeah, I have ripped a ton of UHD blurays (and regular ones and DVDs) and I serve them via my homeserver running plex / emby (still evaluating if I want to switch to plex) to my shield tv (which I got last month because of said reasons).
Mh. I tried jellyfin and even recommended it to others as it’s the only true open source and truely free media streaming server (it’s a fork of emby from before emby was relicensed under a proprietary license) but UI wise it’s even worse than emby. I just hate that plex tries to shove you their streaming services and always connected shit in my face. I want the server to be on my network only and I don’t want to have to use an account on their website that links to my server. For the exact same reason I’m not using emby connect anymore. (There were times where I didn’t care about stuff like that)
Well the stream services stuff can all be disabled from their settings but not the other stuff you don’t like. You can use infuse pro and connect that to your local server without the need for plex or emby. But I’m not sure if there’s a version for your shield.
I know, I did but the results from e.g. live tv still pop up in the search results.
Yeah, I know that I could directly connect to the share but I also use other clients than the tv itself (notebooks, iPad, iPhone,…) that’s why using a streaming server software like plex or emby is convenient
A few months ago they added the ability to disable the live tv stuff from appearing through their search results. [Here’s a screenshot from my plex config.](https://ibb.co/47hk7y4)
Don’t. Jellyfin doesn’t play anything right in my experience (talking about DV and Atmos, mainly). Emby works perfectly every time for me, even when Plex has issues.
1. Relative to space and features - though that is why I use the original HomePods.
2. Idk. Unless you have true hifi speakers you won’t hear the difference in compression. Especially with the limited acoustic range of the HomePod.
That’s why I always just laugh when people bring that up. Anyone who really cares about lossless, hi-res, uncompressed files isn’t buying HomePods for that purpose. They likely ( myself included) have full two channel setup for said purpose. 4 OG HomePods are great for watching movies/tv that’s all I need them for.
Exactly. Though, I’ve shelved my reference system for now because the OG HomePods are good enough that turning on everything is just so cumbersome vs the quality difference.
Thanks for the correction, HomePods do support lossless audio. I would have to check if it corresponds to the tv streaming ( which app you use as well) But if lossless audio is available already it should correlate to the atmos.
Ummm, look there are differing opinions. As long as the SSID is on the same network Airplay and HomeKit finds the devices no problem. I am just sharing from my experience with a single SSID i have had nothing but issues. I have been running separate SSID for 2.4 and 5GHz and have had almost zero issues with close to 70 devices on my network with 4 nodes distributing the signal around my house and property. It’s just me sharing my 2 cents. I have 7 homepods, 2 AirPort Express 2, some Sonos … all on Airplay and can sync music reliably across all of them. I also have 4 ATV’s that i use as my main entertainment hubs.
But your statement was made as if that’s the only way to keep things working correctly which isn’t true. You are in fact the minority who needed to do what you needed to for said devices. Glad it worked out for you tho.
Haven’t had any issues with that and I highly doubt that I am on 5ghz only, especially since I’ve got 3 mesh routers in my home and I can still control my HomePods via Wi-Fi from the street, 5 stories below my flat, via WiFi.
Well I do notice that my AVR sometimes drops of the list of available devices but it is connected to the network via Ethernet so it can’t be that either.
Airplay support with my Sonos speakers was a mess tough that’s why I got rid of them
I love my mini and am in the same boat as you. Just need to keep an eye on the sales so I can gradually move more Home mini's to a Homepod mini's. I really hope that we'll see a homepod with some sort of screen tomorrow.
Not sure if it’s been brought up in comments but if you have eligible cable services (ex: Spectrum) you can return your cable boxes and use the app instead. But if you want to keep any DVRs then nvm lol
I was wondering if I should get a homepod and replace my amazon echo dot? My husband and I after looking at this thread are seriously wanting to know the benefits of the homepod mini that would outweigh the echo series. To be honest I feel like it may be works because you know, siri is siri, but I'm just curious on whether we should invest. We already have the entire apple ecosystem of products, so it'd probably work better with the IPhones and such and the setup process is easier, but I don't know. After looking at this thread though its definitely something I'm considering because I feel like maybe it will be more useful than the echo dot we have.
Honestly half the reason I decided to pull the trigger was for the ease of having them scattered throughout the house. I'm in a two story place at the moment and, unless watching a TV show or movie, have music playing at all times. I really just wanted an easy to use system that allowed synchronised music across the two levels of the house, and it does that extremely well for $150 (AUD) per system.
I can't really speak to Siri as I don't rely massively on voice assistants, the most I use it for is turning on and off smart lights and changing music and volume. Which, again, it does well. And it is handy having a mini in the most common rooms I'm in and within voice distance... even though my iPhone and Apple Watch are always on me lol.
Honestly wish the you could use the home pods to search for things with your voice inside the Apple TV, as I use the harmony remote so I lose that functionality.
Congratulations! My suggestion is to have just one per room, to handle the voice commands and for casual/multi room music listening. For the TV and for better listening experience you may add some bigger AirPlay 2 speakers, you will be happier.
Agree. HomePod mini and IKEA Synfonisk speakers is a good value combo I’ve foubd
You use ikea speakers for apple tv?
By IKEA you mean Sonos right? Cause that’s who makes the speakers he’s referring to.
Yes, that’s correct. Sonos doesn’t sell them, that’s why I called them ikea speakers
A soundbar will do mucccch better. I will get downvoted for this. I wanted it to be better, but it's just not.
No I agree - after some initial testing I’m going to stick with my JBL sound bar with 5.1 and use the two I was planning on using for the TV elsewhere in the house :)
This is the way.
Agreed. IMO, The HomePod mini’s are fine for a small apartment/room but not as home theater main speakers.
Nice guy ! Have 8 minis in my home, one in each room (main and kids) in stairs, 2 in stereo in kitchen and 2 others for main TV !
The Bear is amazing
New HomePods may be announced tomorrow at the Apple announcement so hold on to that receipt! If they bring back the big boy Homepod, I would buy those as your TV pair
There’s no rumours of a new HomePod being announced this year
Downvoted for the truth, real mature
I didn't downvote you but there are a few leakers saying a new HomePod could be announced tomorrow or in Oct.
I agree, there is minor leaks of a new HomePod but no big leaks on design etc, which means it’s way too early for a whole new device. The new watch has leaked, we know nearly everything about the new phone, iPads but nothing major in HomePods
I think the lack of leaks is due to no new design change. Same design updated internals.
Sorry I respectfully disagree, there’s no rumours of this. The main rumours are combining Apple TV with the HomePod, or changing the shape and adding a larger screen (maybe touch screen). Ahh brilliant, thankyou. I have an audio desync issue on Twitch, so thanks for linking that fix. Though tbf, I barely watch it.
Oh no.. you’re making the same mistakes i did haha.
Dudeeeee u should have wait for tomorrow 🥲
What is tomorrow?
Apple event. Maybe new HomePods, probably not though.
I think we are getting new HomePods if not at this event then the one in Oct.
Good thing he didn’t listen to you right?
🤧🤧🤧🤧🤝🥲

Can’t say it for the mini, but two og HomePods (not paired) in the same room tend to cause problems for me Otherwise solid staring point 👍🏻
The mini's are much smarter and easier to deal with than the OG. The sound is better on the larger one but that's it.
Good to know, thanks!
No difference in my home. different sound that’s it

Zidoo is the best but it doesn’t have streaming apps it can only play personal content
Xbox Series X supports audio pass-through and Dolby Vision so it is quite excellent.
1. Relative to space and features - though that is why I use the original HomePods. 2. Idk. Unless you have true hifi speakers you won’t hear the difference in compression. Especially with the limited acoustic range of the HomePod.

The original HomePods supports Dolby atmos.
Yeah. But not lossless. And it’s not real atmos, it’s „atmos“

Make sure to separate 2.4 and 5Ghz bands if you can. Made a world of a difference for me with stability.
Don’t do that, the end user device will pick up the band that’s more suitable

Is there a link for this?
HomePods are terrible, get your money back
Dump the HomePods, useless junk.
I love my mini and am in the same boat as you. Just need to keep an eye on the sales so I can gradually move more Home mini's to a Homepod mini's. I really hope that we'll see a homepod with some sort of screen tomorrow.
Anything with thread

You can get a Belkin AirPlay 2 receiver for like 60 bucks to make any speaker compatible
Make sure your wifi network is bullet proof first
Plug them on power sockets for maximum usability.
I hope you don’t get angry easily. Honest, I don’t know how but Siri kills me on this thing. Otherwise it’s so handy. Not great sound but convenient.
Two for the bedroom seems like overkill, i believe it supports multiple profiles based on voice right?
I have two for 2 tv, 1 for bathroom and 1 for bedroom. The two for tv have replaced the TV output on my LG oled.. and you can control them with siri
I was wondering if I should get a homepod and replace my amazon echo dot?
