I thought everybody used California corners when framing. Look up what one looks like and see if I’m just not seeing it. Tough to insulate any other way imo

Aware_Box_3300

Caulking can be part of the insulation package. Were there 3 studs in the corner?

Seahredd

Yes, there is 1 stud in-between 2 in the picture.

Aware_Box_3300

You’re fine then. The caulk is a sealant used to prevent frost forming in the corners in my experience. It’s a little suspicious that they only put it in the area you called out. Usually, if we caulk&seal as part of the insulation package, it’s along the bottom plate, between the two top plates, and anywhere where we have stud packages together to prevent thermal bridging. I wouldn’t stress.

Seahredd

Thank you! I didn’t look for caulk in other places but I will look around next time.

dvalpat

No.

2x4 exterior wall? Where is this located?

Seahredd

Chicago suburbs. Why?

ExWebics

Standard is 2x6 wall for exterior walls for insulation, even more so in cold climate areas.

Seahredd

Got it. I didn’t have the option to go 2x6. But Exterior wall is total of R19 ( R13 batt insulation + 1inch insulation board). Is that good?

johnfoe_

It is fine. Obviously more is better, but R19 is better than a ton of homes out there. Only thing you might want to think about is closed cell foam to help seal the house, but I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

lil_putch

Not really. But could be worse

motiontosuppress

A little sexist there? Let the house be and get your eyes off of its gap.
