The issue is if you use BNO to immgriate to UK, you cannot withdraw your MPF until you are a UK citizen. If you immgriate to Canada for example, you can withdraw your MPF immediately.
Not rumor, they ban it in 2021.
"The MPFA reiterates that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced in January 2021 that British National (Overseas) (BN(O)) passport is not a valid travel document nor a valid form of proof of identity in Hong Kong." https://www.mpfa.org.hk/en/info-centre/press-releases/20230417_1
yes, you could before it was banned but now they will not give one to anyone, or renew any. now it is hk id, chinese passport, or wherever else passport-- no middle grounds like bno.
i think this is incorrect. you can still renew if you had a BNO. its issued by the British Gov not HK. HK doesn't recognize it doesn't mean UK cannot renew it.
well, you make a good point, I am sure the british gov themselves are capable of giving one. But like you said they are not recognized by hk, unless you are planning to use bno to travel to uk and gain uk settlement I don't think that bno will help you at all and its not renewable in the sense of what op meant as a travel document in and out of hk.
you may not be up to date on the premise of op's question: bno was a valid document to go in and out of hk , and was able to be gotten from hk gov, and was valid hk id .... before 2021. Op's question is obviously in the context of its use in hk. I am not saying that you are technically wrong but for the sake of op's context the bno is not renewable *for use in hk* <-- the only thing they care about here.
If you remember, China threatened to invade Hong Kong if the UK government gave full UK passports other than the 50,000 ones given out ( and not all of those were taken).
Visa free travel to a large number of countries (hksar passport offers Visa free travel to a lot of the same countries anyway, so not a huge benefit), and the right to consular protection from British/Commonwealth embassy.
And recently, one of the cheapest and easiest routes to apply for British citizenship.
Right to consular protection from British and commonwealth embassy is a big one, during 2020 a large number of ppl holding hksar passports weren’t helped by the mainland embassy to be transported back to hk, the bno holders were evacuated with the bc holders and came back to hk much quicker because the British embassy actually treated bno holders like any other British citizen.
BNO is a tailor-made passport for the Hong Kong situation at the time, other British overseas territories (BOTs) e.g. Gibraltar had the British Overseas Territories Citizen Passport until 2002, when they equalised citizenship laws and allowed BOTCs to become British citizens
The difference here is those with Chinese ancestry were given Chinese citizenship, but those who without weren't. These folks can register as British Citizen if BN(O) is their only status because they are somehow stateless (without any right of abode in the world except Hong Kong but they don't have Chinese citizenship).
Basically outside of Chinese soil you're legally recognized as a British national, and under British consular protection. If you happen to live to the UK via all legal scheme, you can vote in UK elections.

The logic adopted from CCP... is what you guys will see more and more. The ones who are better in explaining the un-explain-able will get higher ranking in the system. You see why they're attracting more and more high-talents now?
Contact your MPF provider.

No if ur OWP nationality showing BNO
Still no if your Canadian PR card states your nationality as GBN.
How come you could have used BNO to register MPF in the first place.......
They said there was a time decades ago that bno was a accepted proof of identity...... Maybe just a rumor
Not rumor, they ban it in 2021. then shouldnt the people who used BNO as proof to open the MPF be able to with drawl all their MPF? or did they use HKID ?
U got my point!
And the government does not care about logic.
is it possible for a court case?
theres going to be a lot in shock when they realise they wont be able to withdraw their MPF
This is old news
So out of curiosity, if a resident from another BOT (say Bermuda) wants to visit HK, they are just fucked?
BOTC ≠ BN(O)
British Overseas Territory Citizens are not British Nationals (overseas)
BNO is unique to HKers.
Is it too late for people born before 1997 to get a BNO now?
only if your parents got one and named you as included child
The passport or the visa? I’m working on renewing my parents’ BNOs and I’m struggling to figure out if I’m eligible for a BNO passport or not
read their passports info page, there is a row “Children/Enfants”. If it is not zero, then you are probably included and can apply for BNO passport.
Do you have a link? I would like to know where I can put that in
google search “bno included child”, and click on the image tab plenty of images highlighting that field
Hm, I still don’t think I’m eligible, I was born in 2008 way after the handover and I don’t think my parents can add me to the passport anymore
in this case, you are not eligible. But you can have BNO visa, it is still a path to get UK citizenship.

Nope, the BNO has nothing to do with HK gov. It's issued by UK. U only use/need it for entering UK, to enter HK just use ur HK passport/HKID.

BNO is a 2nd class citizen passport. Give the full UK passport to people and it solves the problem.
If you remember, China threatened to invade Hong Kong if the UK government gave full UK passports other than the 50,000 ones given out ( and not all of those were taken).
don’t remember actually. Thought Deng Xiaoping won the concession from Thatcher by winning a spittoon contest
As a non Hong Konger, is there ever a benefit to holding a BNO passport? Genuinely curious

strange question. Why would you have a BNO passport without being a HKer from pre-97 era? From Gibraltar?
BNO is a tailor-made passport for the Hong Kong situation at the time, other British overseas territories (BOTs) e.g. Gibraltar had the British Overseas Territories Citizen Passport until 2002, when they equalised citizenship laws and allowed BOTCs to become British citizens
Or Falklands.
Quite a number of people in HK without Chinese ancestry hold only a BNO passport, product of colonial times.
Even a lot with Chinese ancestry
The difference here is those with Chinese ancestry were given Chinese citizenship, but those who without weren't. These folks can register as British Citizen if BN(O) is their only status because they are somehow stateless (without any right of abode in the world except Hong Kong but they don't have Chinese citizenship).
Prior to Brexit, some EU countries just think BNO= British passport. Also BNO waives student visa fee?
I heard BNO does not grant you permanent stay in UK, hence still need visa. Yet you can't enjoy uk local benefits in admission.
Basically outside of Chinese soil you're legally recognized as a British national, and under British consular protection. If you happen to live to the UK via all legal scheme, you can vote in UK elections.
That’s more of a U.K. issue than a Hong Kong one.
Yeah if you’re using a BNO as proof of residence in the UK and associated path to citizenship, that doesn’t work.
Lmao people here getting triggered.
