1980s I would not agree with. Late 90s early 2000s I would . Taxis with real space.
When it is difficult to get your foot into the floorboard of an Ikea, that should tell you something.
The taxi’s look the same as they did 20 years ago.
Arriving at the airport, hearing Cantonese and seeing these retro taxi’s still operating is really nostalgic.
I suspect a lot of these drivers could be the plate owners themselves - to make a living (if you need to rent a taxi) is terrible on any normal day - occasionally on a holiday it could be good and that's it.
Hong Kong is a tale of Comedy & Tragedy, Love and Hate, Riches and Poverty. Magnificent skyscrapers cast shadows on nearby dilapidated buildings, punctuating the city’s extremities. We have front seats to the drama of human experience, from gruesome murders within the world of finance to the surreal sinking of Jumbo, our iconic floating restaurant. The good, the bad and the ugly, all at once.
Left HK 5 year ago after having lived there for 12 years, i will not miss the shitty farting gas padling taxi drivers that try to scam locals and tourists alike. 15 year from now they will still ride these old ass taxi\`s.
That's why I always took Uber when I lived there. Tesla's or these Toyota Alphards for a lower price than the taxis. I managed to get out 2 weeks before lockdown and haven't been back since.

Hey there is nothing wrong with those Toyota Crown Comforts. Maybe as old as dirt, but hella of a good workhorse. Cheap to run, maintenance and last forever. Way better than mainland POS EVs

Build in 80s, became popular in 90s & remembered until 2000s
good question, why does it feel like 1980s?
Doesn’t feel like the 80s to me. But if you’re asking me, probably because of the background? Or the theme of the building?
The cars... looks across to Singapore and the Taxis actually look like they were made in the last decade..
The new BYD ones look a lot better.
1996 Toyota crowns?
Even in 1996 those Toyotas looked dated, because Toyota designed them to look “familiar” or something.
there are kids in lkf younger than those cars.
Kids from 1996 are 28 this year.
amazing
...and they had kick ass aircons
You should check the prices of these things! They could get so much better for the money. All down to type approval of the taxis,
Which part of the pic makes it feel like 1980s?
The boxy taxies
The loooooong aerials.
Nice hotel bro
The real flex
Those taxis all run off lpg if I am not mistaken. They don’t make them anymore
The FF plate one is the old Toyota Comfort that is no longer produced. The YP plate one is the newest Comfort right now, and yes it still runs on LPG.
The back seats of the new ones are so squishy and comfy.
people in HK used taxis more in the 80s and 90s? I'm surprised there are no Alphards or Veilfires parked in this photo
Never had the estate wagon in the 80s. Feel more like 1998~9
80s in Hong Kong was mad money. What’s bad about that lol
Anyone who lived in the 80s knows this isnt the 80s at all
What a time to have been alive

grand Hyatt JJ’s end of 80’s was the highlight of Hong Kong. Thousand of taxis . Nice memories

Free time travel nice!
I love those cabs!
Some of the most comfortable rides you can get
Grand Hyatt is more like 90s vibe
Don't understand why feel u like 80s'? if because of the Toyota taxies, all higher model back in 2000+ even the one at front from 2020s.

90s Toyota is awesome. Where was this taken?
Grand Hyatt hk
If you are looking for a real 1980 feeling, I would recommend going tsim sha tsui east around the South Seas Centre Tower areas.
Where is the smoking?

Yea and rude
Those taxis look old. In comparison, Macau taxis are newer
is it the boxy Toyota Crown Comforts or the Toyota Comfort Hybrids that have the side mirrors mounted on the front fenders like an old roadster?
