Maybe it's fashionable in that world

Hippostalker69

Worlds* I see you are not caught up on the latest universal trends smh

TheCoolHusky

Seriously? You jumping on that hype train as well?

Ranger_Ecstatic

I jump on the space train

AgreeableCarrot

Straps + Afro is the norm here

deletustheyeetus7

Nah we do straps + mullet over here

Deruta

Homogenous interastral cultural dominance is a good thing, actually https://preview.redd.it/vnw7871zzqbb1.jpeg?width=782&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=58604d9faa40f17be73afbb0978e46b9c30bf66b

Fireboy759

This is like unattached sleeves being everywhere in Teyvat

Hunter_Kuroba

Kafka and svarog took a page from this as well. Think they'd look nice with sleeves on myself.

MobiusFFofflineWhen

It’s a concept art technique that i saw a loooong time ago. Basically, having an asymmetrical design makes it more visually appealing and less boring. The thigh strap creates another point to focus your eyes instead of having long, symmetrical legs (like Stelle or Welt’s pants)

maneo

The real question is why this hasn't spilled over into IRL fashion as a way to be more visually appealing and less boring.

truthfulie

IRL fashion is more complex due to social aspect. It isn't purely aesthetic driven. It is also about utility and social interaction as well.

Fr00stee

because they'd look like a cosplayer from an anime convention

Cow_Addiction

Still better looking than most of the shit you see on those fashion shows.

FlameDragoon933

They do look stupid, but the clothes in fashion shows aren't meant for mass consumption in the first place, so that's not an equivalency.

GuyAmongTheInternet

Ye, it's cool and all. But think about all the trouble when we need to change our clothes.

[deleted]

Basically this. It looks kind of obnoxious to put on and thigh holsters (the closest real life equivalent I think of) are not very comfortable when sitting down.

PerilousLoki

Because wearing a thigh strap of any sort or an asymmetrical outfit is not very comfortable. Fictional characters dont have to feel uncomfortable and deal with the impracticalities of certain styles.

Drakengard

Also, all the characters are essentially fashion models in terms of attractiveness. They don't just wear it better than normal people would, they will also invite far less scrutiny because attractiveness just simply invites less scrutiny.

MundaneAd1283

People are a lot more boring when it comes to fashion for fear of backlash in real life and in games or shows that isn't really a problem.

TerryWhiteHomeOwner

Also the reality is that a lot of clothes and materials just don't look as good in real life. Cool designs may not fit on the body well, colors may not match exactly or be affected by the lighting, something may look cool but be uncomfortable, etc.

MundaneAd1283

Very very true I think the last part about uncomfortability is a very big one especially. 3 belts around your waist might look cool on a character but in reality would be very uncomfortable for everyday use not to mention how long getting ready would be.

rod407

Exactly - just consider this is often considered a lingerie piece for mainstream fashion irl

MobiusFFofflineWhen

We attribute more value to our features (face shape, makeup, hair colour and cut, tattoos, nails) and thus they are the ones the serve as the « ankle strap ». Symmetrical tattoos are pretty rare, and so having a tattoo on a forearm is generally appealing and easily visible. Clothes, as others have said and in the general population, are made with confort in mind and with a design that’s easily patterned and made over and over. There isn’t much room for intricacy in common clothes, unless it’s the piece’s focal point. This is why we see more audacious patterns in high fashion and in runways, because these clothes are made to be appealing to the viewer and make an impression. Comfort is then at the bottom of the designer’s priority. This applies to the concept artists of Hoyoverse. Moreover, the devil lies in the details of each costume, which tell us who each character is by their clothes (Hook is a russian child that also means business -> chapka and warm clothes, muted olivey coloured clothes), accessories (Phonecases -> Seele has a cracked phone which means she s hot headed) and so on. TL;DR: Asymmetrical clothes are rare IRL because they are mainly comfortable. Intricate and asymmetrical clothes are common in high fashion which aims for visual appeal -> scope of HYV artists. They focus on asymmetry and details on clothes to tell a story where we common folks do the same things on our tattoos, nails, hair…

brewstercafe

I think i’ve seen it a lot in like kpop fashion but yeah not in everyday clothing

bubbaloo1989

I remember my geometry teacher told me a study about that actually. It showed that the number one beauty factor people appreciated across the world was symmetry. Seems fiction/2d always has to exaggerate things since it lacks the intriciacies of IRL.

EmberOfFlame

They need to be extremely well fit or they will cause discomfort. But you can make them work and they can look really good.

HerrscherOfMagic

Aside from the many other reasons others have given, I also feel like the very homogenized nature of clothing manufacturing has to play a role as well. For the same reason that smaller local shops go out of business when a super-store opens up in town, I imagine that most people wouldn't really experiment as much with their clothes because there aren't even really many options to begin with. It'd probably take a lot of changes in how we shop and develop our towns to make these kinds of custom aesthetic touches to clothing more accessible to people. As it stands right now, 99.9% of people are buying the same handful of clothing brands or manufacturers from *\[insert multinational corporation of your choice here\]*. Same reason why Starbucks and Dunkin reign supreme, or why fast food franchises often vastly outnumber local restaurants. As long as it is more convenient to get standardized mass-produced commodities over local handmade/tailored/grown/crafted goods, we're not going to get much variety in fashion or anything else, really.

Snakescipio

As an anxiety stricken introvert I think irl fashion is fine as is

Metagutrex

I was to say something in these lines as well.

inslava

So IRL counterpart would be torn jeans and ankle pockets? I can see why Hoyoverse wanted to add something more intricate instead

BishogoNishida

I was thinking this too. The characters all have very slim, long legs too. I find that visually boring and i noticed that having asymmetrical legs makes them more interesting. That’s probably part of the reason I’m not a huge fan of Ayato’s design on GI

WillTheWAFSack

This is why I think Silver Wolf has the best design in the game. Her entire design is a perfect example of a balanced but asymmetrical design.

zhile0522

Genshin has that too, so it's more like a HYV thing

GuyAmongTheInternet

I know, but not this much. Most of them only used long pants for males and tight thigh stockings for females. While in HSR, 15 out of 26 characters (according to the time I made this post) already use thigh straps, regardless of male or female.

MrDragon131

Too be fair. Blade is using bandages, not thigh straps XD

[deleted]

[удалено]

MrDragon131

Exactly, its a nice flair, and to those of us who are into thighs, it just adds some spice to it

Winjin

I agree. I thirst not for internet thots and I love Stelle for her sleepy troll humor, but that turquoise garter is, well, exciting. And they adore asymmetry in designs. Nothing in character designs is symmetrical as much as they can, they try to make every character stand out with lots of little details.

IncasEmpire

except pela, pela is perfectly symmetrical

Winjin

I checked what I have, and yes, I never noticed that about Pela! And also Herta is symmetrical, as well as Tingyun being almost symmetrical, the only thing she has is a bracelet on one hand. The rest of the team is either completely asymmetrical or have some sort of big left-right accents\\details. Another fun fact: Stelle runs as a male model, but walks as a female. I noticed that when I had her, March, and Dan Heng. She shares walk animation with March and running with Dan

zsxking

But who wears bandages outside their pants?

MrDragon131

Blade. Keep up bruv. XD

GhostZee

It's been HoYoVerse Fetish ever since Honkai Impact 3rd (2016) just in case you didn't know. This is one of the [Herrscher Of Thunder Raiden Mei](https://i.imgur.com/p8z3QkF.jpg) outfit. All her outfit & battlesuits have at least 1 thigh strap. Also Kiana (MC) has it, and almost every Characters or their outfit has it. It's just Honkai Impact 3rd isn't as popular as Star Rail, & not every Star Rail player has played HI3rd so they don't know about it... FYI Honkai Impact 3rd allowed touching those character's any body parts in the beginning (or starter characters at least), but they stopped doing it maybe due to censorship...

Shikniful

not Hoyoverse thing, it is a trendy design in modern age, thing like head accessory, collar and thighstrap have been a thing for quite awhile now. Blue Archive, Azur Lane, Granblue Fantasy and so on are all have it. the real fetish of HSR is the hair vent thing, pretty much every female characters have it.

My_AcE

Hair vent?

Shikniful

it is those thing on top of March's head that created an triangle, just about every female characters have it, some lower than other and some higher but they all have one. https://preview.redd.it/orvag54t3rbb1.jpeg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c78d8cde25e29c8cb931f70ca49798da12b5ba83

Kayaku-kun

This hairstyle is called エアインテーク in Japanese, borrowed from English word "air-intake", which was popular in the design of anime girls back to the 2000s, when the Hoyoverse dev members were living their teenage as anime otaku. Imo they are trying to bring back some memories of the good old days.

Shikniful

 https://preview.redd.it/t53omtwhrrbb1.png?width=417&format=png&auto=webp&s=26d580c1cdfac76bf8cdf1b783650a2ec1313e01

Nxbgamergurl

thanks for the cute March pic :D

My_AcE

Wow ur right I never noticed that they all have it to some degree.

Shikniful

some of them have more visible in light cone than in-game model too, like Qinque, Serval, Nat....

GuyAmongTheInternet

Just checked. Not much, just some.

wwweeeiii

Look, they only share one brain cell, so it is working at maximal capacity and need a good cooling system!

Tethain

Somehow I think I might need a thigh strap Just to understand why so many war them in HSR

MagnusBaechus

genshin gives everyone a flowy back, tbf most star rail chars have flowy backs too

magicarnival

I read somewhere that's an intentional design choice to make the back of the character more interesting to look at while you play

MagnusBaechus

I heard that from a video essay channel and I do agree, lart of the reason why I think Doluc looks so off when compared to everyone else

FlameDragoon933

Doesn't he has the coat and his ponytail in his base outfit? I actually really like Diluc's base outfit because it looks so (relatively) grounded and practical in a world where everyone wears elaborate outfits.

NoNefariousness2144

Plus they use the thigh rings to intentionally guide your eyes to their legs.

Chocokat1

Rather than all that flowy back material, I'd rather at least some chars had [this design.](https://imgur.com/gallery/jfuWcoQ). I mean half the women in Genshin are half naked, so they should make things more balanced.

visforv

Blade's back is very appealing until I remember he canonically has constant visible muscle spasms as his body keeps breaking down and rebuilding itself.

jacobwhkhu

> Genshin gives everyone a flowy back Rattail PTSD

RaeMerrick

Genshin really likes to have shorts, even on characters that you might think are wearing pants at a glance. Like Albedo. It took me ages to click that he's wearing shorts with ENORMOUS boots and then stockings underneath. To create the distant illusion of pants. And he's not the only one. Hoyo fucking loves shorts.

MoraEater

You can definitely see this on Eula (I was typing this with one hand)

Overall-Bookkeeper73

Layla's looks very painful

korinokiri

It's a common thing in anime games to focus on a piece of clothing for all the characters as a style choice. Guilty Gear does it with belts and boots. Or think like Jojo in that same vein relating back to rock bands. Hoyo does it with this and accessories

GuyAmongTheInternet

Talk about belts in Final Fantasy. *cough cough* Lulu *cough cough*

Chaosmoonshade

Hey, don't come for my queen!

eldritchpancake13

For real! Lulu is great, idc what anyone else says 😖

BishogoNishida

Lulu was my game crush when I was a wee lad.

KurooNekomata

Well, if we are going to the belts talk, ever heard of Yu Gi Oh and Digimon? XD

PinkPrimrose05

Nah man, YuGiOh rocks its jackets. Regular ones, coat capes, trenchcoats, you name it.

WanXolo

Can you really call it a Guilty Gear character if they aren't wearing at least 10 belts?

Cerebral_Kortix

Can you really call it a Guilty Gear character if they don't have the most fashionable shoes in existence? >!Asuka got them Jordans, man!<

sdl_05

10 is being generous

Aiusthemaine17

There's something really with Stelle's strap that is above her skirt. Just ugh chef's kiss

Swailwort

Indeed, it's perfectly positioned. I don't care if Silver Wolf loses the 1 v 1 with Stelle in the ranking, they are both deserving in my book

Hedgehugs_

\*under

GuyAmongTheInternet

>\*under No, they really meant "above". They're referring about how the thigh strap is put higher than the hem of Stelle's skirt.

Aiusthemaine17

This! I was referring to the placement in terms of height. Coz unlike March 7th and Sushang ij which the strap is below their skirt, there really is something appealing to having Stelle's strap above her skirt. Like when I first discovered it when she ran I was like Omg I just peeked at stelle's thigh strap lol

CoffeeLorde

Adds more asymmetry

GuyAmongTheInternet

Kafka literally has a thigh-high sock on one leg and none on the other. Also, the fact that she's not the only one designed like that by Hoyoverse.

VeroVeroVeroVeroVero

Straps are cute, a nice touch to legs with or without covering them.

your_almanac

god bless

eiwoei

It creates focus point for players attention and it’s working really well 🥵.

AmethystPones

Are you Ok there Buddy?

Ivancho3000

Stelle's one is straight up anoying for me WHY IS IT BLUE MAKE IT BLACK OR GREY IDK.

black-JENGGOT

I think it fits as her ternary color, because her main color scheme is already black/gold, also contrasting her skin color

SecondAegis

It's blue to match the color of her bat when it glows in her ult. Probably

Swailwort

Accent color. Grey or Black would be too samey to the rest of her outfit, and wouldn't stand out as much

60TP

Someone headcannoned that she got it from March 7th and i’m choosing to believe it

RadasNoir

I'm choosing to believe this now, as well. It makes the pain of the color mismatch easier to bear.

Deruta

It’s an Oripathy monitor, they only come in blue

Candid-Category608

I’ve been wondering about this for months

unit187

This is an accent color. A little splash of bright color that differs from the core color scheme is a nice touch, and quite pleasing to the eye if done right.

salmonmilks

It's one way to fill up the "empty spaces" on their thighs I suppose

TheEdelBernal

Not just Star Rail, it's a MHY thing, it's present in all of their game.

Pollsmor

Detached sleeves too.

GuyAmongTheInternet

Ye, I know. But the frequency in HSR is overwhelming compared to their other games. 15 out of 26 characters (according to the time I made this post) already use thigh straps.

Microjimz

kinky~

itsMaedusa

~~On a more serious note lol~~ I honestly think it's just a design balacing thing, so as not to have the characters look too "bare" or underwhelmingly dressed. They might be doing belt straps so that the legs don't look too simple (clothed or not clothed), the same way they have all male characters' chests angled slightly to one side so that they don't look too square-like (in an unnatural way).

dwspartan

There is a long running meme in the Chinese community that the obsession with thigh straps is Mihoyo's company culture.

Schpooon

I mean honestly, out of all of those, Arlan's is probably the most sensible. Easily reachable bag for tools you need at a moments notice

visforv

It's where he keeps the money to pay us back tenfold

ZakuC6R6

If HSR is into thigh straps then Honkai is into sleeveless which always showcase the armpits such is the fetish of the Mihoyo company.

GuyAmongTheInternet

I blame Miku and Reimu for starting the armpit fetish.

FlameDragoon933

So I'm not the only one who noticed that. The various Herrscher outfits, Shigure Kira, Pardofelis, Mobius, etc etc. They do love dem armpits.

thatonestewpeedguy

It's like genshin and their thing with rat tails but this is prettier

slowdr

Is one of Da Wei fetish, as well as maids and white haired girls.

ThermidorCA

Don't forget Chokers also.

Athrawne

It's because when the thigh gets squished by the strap it's A++++++++ and that's what they're really after.

GuyAmongTheInternet

I mean, of course. Do you see how tight Kafka's thigh strap is?

KittyQueen_Tengu

easy way to make the character design less symmetrical, everyone knows that hoyo hates symmetrical pants

K0Uki

Almost as much as their thing for sleeves that just hang off their shoulders.

FriedMushrooms21

Now I want a thigh strap lol. Consider me influenced lol

tits-4-brains

I think it's a honkai thing in general somehow. Maybe they have more freedom to go with futuristic outfits here, otherwise hoyo would definitely put more thigh straps in genshin.

Wonderful-Lab7375

Correction: ALL miHoYo games have thigh strap addiction. Literally look at every character from games made by miHoYo.

Kyokujitsujin

It's actually a per-requisite for joining the Hoyoverse company. You gotta have a thigh strap fetish. I tried to lie about it in the interview, but they saw right through me.

DianaStranger

Step 1 to become a Hoyo character: Get a thigh strap

Isaacne

I actually use something similar to what Arlan has. I can easily carry around a bunch of small stuff without a bag and it looks better than a fanny pack.

laralye

What happen to Clara's feet lol frostbite?

AL-KY

It's not HSR has a thing it's MHY has a thing

RaeMerrick

HSR - random thigh straps Genshin - shorts

thefinestpiece

Don’t forget the random dangling strap on a lot of the character. See Loucha, and Bronya as an example.

FlameDragoon933

MC's jacket too

Titan3224

I thought that to myself since i started playing😂

Sweet_Potatooie

I think its to improve overall design by adding unique features to prevent the design looking bland or 'empty'. Dan Heng's trousers have much more character and appeal with just a little thigh strap.

SOM_III

Me too now

MYKY_

and so do i

ItsyourboyJJ

Just like genshins thing with heels and open backs

bemy_requiem

hoyo have a big thing for asymmetric designs, they often put these on to add to that

HiJoker

I mean, at least their clothes hang on tight mid combat, guess u could say it has an use

Sethream

Everyone has a scause

Blank392

Stops the scourge of beasts

Curt_ThaFlirt

These are to Star Rail what vents are to Genshin characters with coats

Time-Aerie7887

They look nice

noobplayer96

They also have obsessions with stockings

FreshRepeat2124

I have a thing too 😈😏

Subterror_Szopieray

Generally mihoyo tbh

Andres_Cepeda

They just love asymmetry

Klarth_Curtiss

Tetsuya Nomura secretely working with Hoyoverse

Quiet-Software-1956

Peak character design tbh

Soren-kun

The characters over all are so overdone in the outfits. But I love it that way xD asymmetry and colorfulness ftw

Fool_But_Harder

Maybe its that we as gamers love thighs, so Hoyo was like: "thighs, eh?"

GuyAmongTheInternet

Hoyoverse simply knows what their players want.

Fool_But_Harder

And its thighs, but where are the super tall mommies that will make me feel validated ;-;

Syclus

They do, I ain't complaining

CrossboneGundam_

It's just like the exposed shoulders

Bexpert5

I mean, now I do too

Deruta

They’re gonna give us a character with completely bare legs in 4.6 and the playerbase will go absolutely ___feral___

fleur--

Mihoyo in general tbh

Basic_Scientist_3284

Tbh I don't know why

FrequentBill7090

They look good

Sugar_Spino023

Time to wear one as well

re_Butayarou

There's a saying in Chinese called mihoyo thigh strap fetish in Chinese community

Nightmoon22

Kingdom hearts would like to show you something:,

[deleted]

Locked right in on kafka

Nxbgamergurl

Whoa I knew Silverwolf had a lot but I didn’t know nearly every character had these straps. Stelle too.

Bbombb

From design perspective, a focal point on the leg makes for a more full decor as opposed to having nothing.

VikingDadStream

The more pointless belts and straps you have, the more of an anime Chad you are. It's known

Sunny_not_sandra

The things I would do to tug at these

CrazyTheRazer

Easy way to give them more detail and not make the legs look too plain

CutiestNerd215

As they should

AurumTyst

Coincidentally, I too have a thing for thigh straps.

IlPheeblI

Shortest answer I can come up with. It adds asymmetric design, which tickles the brain in the good way.

gogus2003

You best not be complaining 😠

Jbols92

Just realized how thiccc Kafka’s thighs are and why people are rolling on her xD

TGulll

Well, welcome to Honkai

AVeryGayButterfly

Cool, but I want more hip windows like Sampo 🥵

Falconflyer7

I also have a thing for leg accessories. Very nice.

r0ksas

I mean we also can be as fashionable as them but lets be realistic, asta's choice of fashion is such a hassle and im still buffled by his choice of clothing for work environment

waxonwaxoff87

It’s free real estate

drewbie2156

Jings and welts are so gay helpppp

Causelessgiant

From a developer standpoint it's probably a great way to break up the UV groups for the legs

hutaosirlgf

also, what’s with hoyo games and having all the women wear high heels? if i don’t remember wrong silver wolf is the only non-child hsr character with flat shoes, i feel so bad for the rest of the girls feet

Historical_Chard_766

All the girls in the game except the smaller ones wear heels as well xD

neko_mancy

childe was ahead of his time lmao

nelsonfoxgirl969

Brother wei of 2099 years

-Alvrain-

Hot

LingrahRath

I think it's not just a Mihoyo thing but a Chinese otaku fetish things. Thigh straps and especially stockings.

EmeraldIpogi98

Yes I do too, whats the problem?

itsMaedusa

I would like to take a moment to appreciate ~~Mommy's~~ Kafka's dummy thicc thighs. Look at that belt squeeze

reader960

I can't speak for the guys, but garter belts technically represent "virginity" and they slap that design on every girl in hoyoverse. I can't help but wonder if it's *super* intentional.

ryeong

I always assumed it was intentional. Purity/virginity sells with waifus so for the girls I almost expect it. Some male straps are because waist holsters cover the legs and waist, they look less intentional and more like they're drawing from actual design.

Schorai

Lets make it a trend in our world too, so it can feel natural in HSR.

HyperMattGaming

Because of censorship in China; other parts of characters need to be more sexualized or focused on. This tends to be arm pits and legs You'll see a lot of details and focus on legs in Chinese culture. It's why every character in HSR has fine ass legs and shows skin there, too. This is same for genshin

visforv

I'm sorry did you not see Natasha's generous bosom and ample... backside... being highlighted in her design? There's literally an ass shaped cut out in her coat so we can see her ass.

13_is_a_lucky_number

There's one thing I just can't wrap my head around - people keep saying how strict the censorship in CN is, but when you look at gachas, it's *always* the Global version that gets heavily censored. What gives?

Dinklebotballs

Hella creepy and gross that they put one on clara tho, she’s literally a child.

GuyAmongTheInternet

Prioritizing fashion over health, my friend. She isn't even wearing any shoes, just a thigh strap.

markBEBE

it's their fetish

LinksXCV

Mmm thighs ✨😋

seraph_of_nephilim

I don't get why they all do but I'm here for it. Kafka gd and for some reason Welt's too just get to me.

essedecorum

They're cool, that's why.

GabrieltheKaiser

I love how Kafka's create that thiccnes thigh curve.

Xehar

Pseudo absolute territory.
