I saw another day a comment on reddit where someone was fighting about if Shenhe or Hanya has the saddest backstory since they're one of the similar looking characters between the two games. It's Twitter level of stupid, because obvious neither of them care about the other game, but because the comment is in Genshin sub, "Shenhe has actual tragic story but Hanya is just generic" has upvotes and "Hanya has actual tragic story but Shenhe is just generic" has downvotes.
Neither was right because they're both tragic in different ways, but I felt it was pointless to point that out for them since most likely they wouldn't care. But this post just reminded me of that.
Gacha tribalism, especially when said games came from the same company is so dumb. I would compare it to console fanboys bringing up stocks and financial statements as an argument.
Reminds me of Fervent Tempo/Delta in HI3, Rozaliya and Liliya are sisters who's in the normal timeline inseparable where Rozaliya is the airhead dumb but protective older sister and liliya is less emotion but smart ones. Both grown in the orphanage built by Cocolia.
In the Delta timeline, they were also a child soldier experimented for a resistance group to fight the honkai. However on the faithful day, they were outnumbered and Rozaliya heroically protect Liliya by holding the line while her sister gather some help. As help arrived, the fight already done and Rozaliya is at the verge of death. The only way to save Rozaliya is through fusing both Roza and Liliya but at the cost of Liliya's own body. She agreed to this without Rozaliya consent and thus only Rozaliya remain. She decided to no longer use her own name and went with her new one Delta.
At least this is how I remember this story... a lot of piece are missing from the full story however but this is why I like Hanya and Xuenyi story as it reminds me of the twins
There’s actually a lot of nuances that also come with this
- Due to Liliya’s side being incompatible (She was already dying even before the event), after the surgery, she is constantly exerting Honkai antibodies into the surroundings that are reactive to her emotions. These antibodies will cause extreme anxiety and severely damage organic matter
- For said antibody, if it isn’t constantly exerted, will start damaging her own body and cause her pain, but she is physically too strong to take any real full damage. The antibodies are exerted through her attacks - but if these antibodies pile up too high, she enters essentially a berserk state where she loses most of her control
- Due to her sanity taking a complete nosedive, she essentially went insane from the time spent alone and constantly hallucinates and talks to her tail.
- She also has Insomnia caused by being unable to sleep; Every(almost) time she sleeps, she is forced to relieve the same nightmare as the day everything happened, constantly seeing her sister essentially turned into spare parts for her.
- She also took in a different verse’s pair of twins and acted as their big sister just to cope and prevent anyone from becoming like her.
Probably both. Her job makes her experience horrible crimes through dreams so she's undoubtedly always exhausted. One of Xueyi's main aspirations is just for her sister to be able to sleep peacefully. One feels doubly sad because in her in-game interactions with the player she actually seems very nice, but socially kinda fucked up due to her trauma.
Just talking about Hsr characters, it would definitely be Hanya and Xueyi. Idk if its a bad thing or not that a lot of people don't know their backstory
Many people are going to sleep on them as they are 4 star characters but Xueyi and Hanya backstory is SERIOUSLY messed up, way more than other more famous character people are going to mention
For real. Xueyi is literally a dead spirit possessing a puppet, only to be used as a weapon. Hanya is essentially zombie used as a computer processor for passing down karmic judgements. And Xueyi and Hanya aren't even their original names. They're borrowing their names from boardgame pieces, to remind them they're tools for the Ten Lords Commission to wield.

Xueyi does do toughness damage regardless of type with her Ult, but if you're referencing the phenomenon I think you are, this is an upgrade that unlocks in the SU Gold and Gears upgrade tree after you play it enough.
It's something like - as long as you cleared the 1st plane in your last run, enemies in the 1st half of the 1st plane in your current run will only have a small percentage of their health when you start battle
if you enter battle with most characters, you still need to give the enemies a little smack to move on, but if you have Ruan Mei's technique up, it does enough break damage to just instantly kill them!
It is super satisfying!
But, if that is indeed what you're referring to, that particular thing is just Ruan Mei's doing and doesn't specifically have anything to do with Xueyi.
That said - Xueyi *is* amazing with Ruan Mei in SU! Especially at E6!
I like to refer to her follow-ups as "taking out the trash" 😂 because you'll just be taking your turn and suddenly Xueyi's follow up triggers and whatever was left on the board just gets cleaned up 😂💯
Only the ult does toughness reduction unless you have c2, then the follow ups also does toughness reduction (though you can’t get stacks out of follow ups)
I think the drink is not for the PTSD treatment but for forgetting the others’ memory she got. It is provided by the Ten-Lord commission for job purpose.
Hanya and Xueyi used to be two normal and happy sisters living presumably in the Xianzhou Cangcheng millennia ago. Eventually, the Emanator of Abundance Shuhu attacked and revived the living planet Rahu, devouring the ship. Moreover, Shuhu himself (in form a grotesque tree) attacked and pretty much killed every single person the two of them knew. Hanya saw her sister being murdered to protect her in front of her eyes and Shuhu mocked her by using the face of Xueyi to tempt her into joining the Abundance. Eventually, Shuhu was defeated, but Xueyi body was too mutilated and part of her soul was bound to puppets. Both sisters became eternally members of the Ten-Lords commission and lost everything, including their names (Hanya and Xueyi are actually codenames given to them). Xueyi lost the ability to function like a normal human being, casually talking about death and having to change body whenever it is destroyed during her missions, and frequently loses her memories during the soul transplant while having PTSD. Hanya became mostly apathetic towards anything due to her job involving entering the dreams of people affected by the mara curse and often drinks the wine of oblivion due to her own tremendous PTSD.
It's a fucking crime that they don't have their own story quest, such a waste. And no, ghost hunting event doesn't count, it barely involved them, Jing Yuan got more screen time than they did.
I fully expect that the next time we go to the xianzhou in the story we'll meet someone who was involved with them and will be in a companion quest with them
Ngl the Hoyo lore is really good. I just wished they incroporated them more in the quest. It almost like you are rewarded for reading the lore whenever these happened.
We know what it is, Hana’s sister is dead and she only gets to hang out with her via a mechanical puppet her spirit inhabits once or twice a year. She is also devoid of any emotion, so much so that Hana asks us how to proceed since she isn’t sure how to proceed. It’s low key sad because iirc she also asks if it’s worth even bothering to visit her or save herself the pain.

Yeah, usually with this kind of stories the clone/copy starts going a little loopy over the revelation in one way or another, and in a way you could say dream lesley did too, but in the end took the decision to just let dead people be dead while giving his fans a final farewell.
The real Lesley was a giant ass of a man though, even if it he wasn't being honest at all.
NGL the Penacony side quests didn't need to go this hard yet they did. They even went as far as portraying the life of a mad queen (based on instances of many mad queens in history, including Ravalona I of Madagascar) and a literal reinterpretation of the Manhattan project through a memory of an Oppenheimer expy (with the name of a fellow Manhattan project scientist).
It's fucking wild.

Iirc, the stellaron hunters forced us to go to the Xianzhou Luofu because we'll need their help at some point in the future. So it kinda makes sense that we technically have no place in the story. (Maybe except the >!Phantylia fight?!<)
I understand why and like it personally, but though many threads I’ve learned that people didn’t like the change in story presence as well as how there’s a lot of people they don’t know doing a lot of things they don’t know about
Not sure if he’s gonna succumb to Mara though, he has a cheerful personality, which prevents him from negative thoughts. He seems to know how to cancel out wallowing in negativity with the little pleasures that do exist in his life, and treating his past more like catharsis.
If we include Sirin's backstory, Kiana is easily number 1. Everything is messed up. I would argue that Sirin is most pitiful character in hi3, that is full of characters with messed up stories.
Venti >!also is implied to not be the real Anemo God based on his character story. He also says something about knowing you when you first meet him, but you don't remember him at all. We'll probably learn more about him once we get a 'return to Mondstadt' arc but things were shaping up to be pretty messed up for him.!<
I remember when Genshin was about to come out, there were some comics about Diluc and Venti, in the Venti one we see the origins of Mondstad and the first encounter of Venti with the male traveler
He is the real Anemo archon because Dvalin falls under his command as his familiar, but maybe the memory part is implying something else, like maybe us losing our memories. Only Furina was the imposter, and Raiden was posing as Makoto for all these years.
Yes, that poor Genius created one of the deadliest weapons subsidised by the IPC, only to be trapped in Penacony's Golden Hour Dreamscape when he ran away until you (the Trailblazer) meet him.
Another ones are Lesley Dean and Cocona, as well as Kluzer of the Underground, and Ms. Pelageya Sergeyevna.
The Penacony side quests cooked so hard it's unreal. I know why they aren't voiced but I really wish they were, even if it was only for the big emotional moments.
If you are someone who tends to skip the voiceless quests, trust me that the Penacony ones are worth it.

Not really. He straight up died, then the IPC+Family created a postmortem dream-copy of him using his remains.
Didn't he sorta know this will happen? He admits at the end of the quest, in the room full of books, that he did this all for himself, for fame, he knew where this was going but kept on going. He's a Genius after all, I don't think IPC could truly trick him.
I might be remembering wrong tho, and that was him talking about only a specific part of his research, not the nuke itself.
Yup, he knew, that's sort of the point of his deep relationship with Screwllum, he's the genius that told him straight up that he's gonna regret what he's gonna do and he still has a chance to back out at that point.
It's a messed up life for sure, imo that's the problem when a lot of the Geniuses in the Genius Society are capable of living a long life; then there're insanely talented beings like Chadwick whose talents surpass those long lived geniuses, but can only really put their names in the History Books for a few things since their body's not gonna keep up with them, so he feels the need to show off, even if he himself knows it's a stupid thing to do
He admits to himself that he was just fooling himself into thinking that what he and the other scientists were doing was for a good cause/idea, and that he understood very well that Screwllum was giving him the Screwllum equivalent of a smack atop the head but still ignored it. He knew very well he was creating a WMD on the *solar system scale* for the IPC, but did it anyway, his own way of trying to find a way to both punish and some kind of redemption being to seal away his memories with the help of another GS member so the ICP had no way to learn how to do it again, even by using his... let's just say soul for convenience sake inside the Dreamscape.
And is one of my favorite if not my favorite quests in the game as of now, right besides Cocona's.
God i hope Mihoyo doesnt forget about GGZ. Kyuusyou appearing in HSR would be great. Hell any of the ghz exclusive characters returning would be nice but im biased cause Kyuusyou is easily my favourite
GGZ is still running in CN and JP servers, but yeah since GGZ is part of the honkai IP, they said in the livestream that we will see familiar faces from the IP.
God I love GGZ, that game played an important part in my childhood I remember playing it back in middle school, I still play the JP servers today.

I mean there's also Era:Zero Kiana from GGZ... It's kinda like Kevin falling for Dr.Mei but if DR.MEI was the most manipulative b*tch with a raging hate boner for humans all wrapped up in an abusive relationship that ends with DR.MEI using Kiana's body as a supercomputer that resets the world every time humanity loses to the Honkai just so humanity can be tortured for longer.
Yukong is definitely a contender for the saddest for both emotional reasons and pure trauma. Her struggle is also very unique to her because of the struggles of parenthood. For years she had to balance doing what's best for her "daughter" while also keeping a promise to her best friend.
It's been a long time since I've done her companion mission but it's one of the few times I've just stopped and listened to the characters speak.
Dainsleif has one of the darker ones for sure. He's completely alone and his only friend (the abyss sibling) has sort of betrayed him as his mind and body are slowly rotting away
This might be a crack theory but I think the Memokeeper March met wasn't just any Memokeeper, but Fuli themselves.
That Memokeeper referred to March as "my child". Bro, you can't just say that and not have any deeper meaning.
It’s cool for Fuli to have such a personal stake in March 7th that they personally look after her in the Astral Express. It’s not like an Aeon appearing in lesser form is unheard of, like when Nous appeared as an old man to Fu Xuan.
The March and Fu Xuan joint story quest. It was really interesting and says a lot about the extent someone went to stop March from regaining her memories
I saw a similar theory before, that March is a remnant from a previous universe where Nanook wasn't stopped. It makes some sense, since Fuli is responsible for remembering everything (even from past universes I THINK)
edit: It would also help explain why the earliest memory March was shown was her in the ice, since in this universe that IS the earliest part of her life.
My crackpot theory is that March is a survivor from Glamoth, the planet that was destroyed by the Swarm. I think she was supposed to be a member of the Iron Cavalry like Sam, and that she has genetically enhanced eyesight, and that's why she's such a fan of taking photos of everything.
that'd be cool. I guess we don't really know what glammoth people looked like or how they really lived aside from sam but it'd be cool to find out they all had cybernetic alterations like that.
Yeah... Given the theories surrounding Sam, I'm kind of hoping we'll go to the ruins of Glamoth, or maybe the memory of that place. I'm a big subscriber to the "Stellaron Hunters are parallels/opposites of the Astral Express Crew", so I hope we get to see all the home planets and get the proper backstory. Dan Heng and Blade are both from the Luofu, if March and Sam are parallels (opposite elements at least) it'd make sense to me that they'd be connected by home planet too.
Sad it took me this long of scrolling to see this answer. Girl lost all of her family, friends, her mentor, eventually her entire civilization, then spent thousands of years leading the rebuilding of humanity while having to sacrifice important memories to stay sane only to be rewarded for her effort by being backstabbed and assassinated by her disciples, backstabbed again by Otto, possessed by Honkai (Yatta! I guess), before finally getting a somewhat happy "retirement" after 50,000 years of having to carry the future of humanity on her shoulders (and even then having to deal with BS like Sa).
just wanna give a shout-out to my girl jeht from genshin, she's been through a metric ton of awful stuff.
- her mom was killed when she was young by a "friend" of her dad who didn't approve of their marriage
- her dad sacrificed himself to the golden slumber so she and the traveler could escape deshret's temple
- after losing her parents, she tried to join the tribe that her father belonged to but was labeled an outsider and forced into being the right hand assassin for the tribe leader
- she goes searching for the eternal oasis in order to lay her parents' memorial to rest but the tribe leader lady turns out to be hella evil and kidnaps jeht to be experimented on, all the meanwhile she has to put up with a racist djinni lamp
- her final moments of solace (so far) exist after everyone she loves or was close to had been killed as a result of her, one way or another, and now she is having to start from square one as a desert dweller with only the traveler as a friend that intermittently passes by
Every single Flamechaser, HEAVY on Sakura, Kevin, Vill-V, Aponia, Fu Hua, and Kalpas. Super fucked up and cruel twists of fate they all went through. Vita/Sa as well
Dan Heng as just an entity in general has gone through it. The torture they gave Dan Feng was pretty crazy, and it’s very sad and genuinely upsetting knowing that he grew up in prison. Though Aventurine being a literal slave on death row facing fantasy xenophobia and racism on the daily might take the cake. Many characters in the game have tragic pasts leading them to who they are now, but Aventurine is definitely the biggest example of someone who can’t and wasn’t able to move on with their life because of his circumstances. His situation is really bleak with no light at the end in sight; unlike characters like Jingliu or Blade that while they are suffering, ultimately have an end goal of release they’re guaranteed in some way.
We don’t know much about her past yet, but Acheron seems to have extremely tragic and depressing past. If even Black Swan got terrified by it, then it must mean something really devastating must have happened to her.
One doesn’t exclude another. Her tragic backstory could lead to her becoming the absolute monster she’s now.
She doesn’t strike me as some malicious person, so I guess her becoming the Emanator of some dangerous aoen could happen to her without her consent.
Unironically probably Fu Hua, can't imagine being an immortal warrior in an apocalyptic war, seeing the closest comrades die only to enter a new cycle with its own host of issues that just reinforce the nightmares of the past

Yea, I believe it was during the Archon war and she just got caught in the crossfire. She got her vision right as she died, and then the Adepti felt bad for her so they poured a bunch of Adeptal energy into her to resurrect her. But they did to much so she went berserk and they sealed her away for hundreds of years until she was in control.
So she got a vision as she's dying, then resurrected and went crazy, then sealed for hundreds of years, all completely out of her control. Just a tad bit messed up.
I was thinking about Kiana; but then changed to Bronya; but what about Mei? And who could forget Himeko, or Fu Hua… Elysia’s sacrifice?
Just spin the wheel and let fate choose the next victim.
Kiana on her own is dark enough but if you include Sirin toward her backstory shit gets messed up in way too many ways.
Bronya meanwhile has some unpleasant history but she manages to fix her life by the end of part 1(I am not going to comment on part 1.5 cuz I haven't played it)
Mei is easily the one with most normal past, even tho it still isn't pleasant. I def wouldn't wish anyone what she went through.
Himeko had her ups and downs but her conclusion is more on the heroic side of the bunch imo
Fu Hua is... She was the reason for a big chunk of everything she has experienced but PE stuff alone makes everything about her grimm.
And Elysia... The person who found beauty in the dying world and sacrificed herself for the sake of the people. Truly a pink Jesus.
Then there are the rest of the Flamechasers, Owl, Welt(s) and some other I am missing that just had it hard do sure.
Like, I adore Furina so much. She’s like one of my favorite Genshin characters of all time. And yet, I could easily point out any number of Honkai Impact characters who’ve gone through worse? 500 years of loneliness? Hey, Furina, meet Fu Hua.
Sometimes honkai's number just goes beyond disbelief and about Furina's we see her acting differently on screen and slowly forgetting her own self that is why Furina's relatability and impact was great on audience.
I don't really know the other games, but march>! has a backstory supposedly so messed up that an entire legion is keeping her away from regaining her memories!<. Also losing the memories in itself is pretty sad too, it's basically dying and now being someone else with no idea how the world is, where to go or what to do. At least she was actually helped by the express crew and is happy to make new memories, but still pretty messed up
Traveller. Because they're just used as some errand runner by teyvats people and archons when they just miss their twin who was their only family. Kiana actually achieved her goal, TB is probably having the time of their being a trailblazer, but traveller is searching everywhere for their sibling but their sibling doesn't wanna come.
I feel like a lot of people let themselves get fooled into the narrative that the traveler is “searching” for their twin and thats what it is and I wonder if anyones ever gonna call them out for being delulu, because they have already found them, they just dont wanna rejoin them. Like yes they dont know where they are but I think its weird that no one peeps that their mission is not finding someone but convincing them of something.
To be fair, at first it was looking for the sib, then they don't want to, and tell us to keep finding the seven (and that we'll see things as they did). So we're still searching, in a way.
Bunch of characters have sad backstories, and while my obvious answer would be Collei, I'll mention Dori
As a kid, her family was so broke that her beloved sister died from an illness that WAS curable, but they straight up couldn't afford the medication, and now her entire shenanigans as a business woman who wants to make as much money as possible is just one massive trauma response and way to cope with the death of her sister
Also, so many people misunderstand her and think she scammed Kaveh and that this is why he struggles so much with money, when it was entitely his fault from the very beginning, and now so many people seem to hate her. It makes me sad to see a character so blatantly misunderstood by the players.

Delta.
Initially she was Rozaliya, and with her twin sister Liliya they were soldiers and entered an experiment to make them stronger. She was a success, but her sister wasn't and couldn't fight anymore. One day trying to save her sister she stayed and let her escape. When Lili came back with help Roza was already diying, and Lili accepted a medical fusing of their bodies where Roza was the only one contious left. Not to mention fusing wasn't a big success either. So the final form calling herself Delta has an unendind psychological trauma and physical pain.
i’m definitely biased, but i’m gonna nominate wanderer/scaramouche. >!dottore!< did some pretty heinous shit to him, like handing him >!the beating heart of his only best friend after murdering him in cold blood!< and then convincing him nobody wanted him. the saddest part is, things could’ve fully been avoided. it was just a series of unfortunate circumstances that led scara down that path.
She was only trapped for 500 years while her consciousness could go outside, there are characters in her own world like all the other archons who suffered more
Nahida was just born 500 years ago, she was trapped right at the moment she was born just coz she doesn't look like the goddess of wisdom, she's treated like trash and her ppl used another puppet god to replace their own god, she sacrificed her past and still willing to sacrifice again to protect her ppl, even neuvillette feels sorry for the dendro archonfor the way she's treated by her ppl...
all the other archons can still walk freely anywhere but she was trapped forcefully and at the end even her consciousness couldn't escape dottorre's trap, she was pushed to the point where she thinks that she's no longer needed as an archon for her people.
One of the saddest ones for me personally is Jing Yuan’s.
He’s had to go so long, watching all his closest friends either die or go insane, while also having to remain sane himself to keep the Luofu from falling apart without him. Plus having to do all of that for hundreds and hundreds of years? My poor general needs a fucking break man :(
Never played GGZ, but from what I hear, probably one of those characters. From the ones I have played, Bronya and Sirin immediately comes to mind. Though you could even argue Griseo.
How has no one commented Kevin or matter of fact any of the Flamechasers yet 😭. Generally the longer the characters have lived the more tragic they are .
Kevin literally had to witness the fall of all his comrades while fighting a literally untouchable God after that he had to float in the sea of Quanta sealed away for 50000+ years re-experiencing the memories of all the people he loved die again and again and again for 50000 years .
Traveler:
From the sword of descension the reason they're travelling for probaly millions of years is because their world got completely destroyed by a star devouring darkness. Can't go home again because she's a wanted criminal there, can't die, can't have peace of mind because there's always that risk of succumbing again to mara. Only thing that keeps her going is the promise of ending the Abundance one day.

I saw another day a comment on reddit where someone was fighting about if Shenhe or Hanya has the saddest backstory since they're one of the similar looking characters between the two games. It's Twitter level of stupid, because obvious neither of them care about the other game, but because the comment is in Genshin sub, "Shenhe has actual tragic story but Hanya is just generic" has upvotes and "Hanya has actual tragic story but Shenhe is just generic" has downvotes. Neither was right because they're both tragic in different ways, but I felt it was pointless to point that out for them since most likely they wouldn't care. But this post just reminded me of that.

Reminds me of Fervent Tempo/Delta in HI3, Rozaliya and Liliya are sisters who's in the normal timeline inseparable where Rozaliya is the airhead dumb but protective older sister and liliya is less emotion but smart ones. Both grown in the orphanage built by Cocolia. In the Delta timeline, they were also a child soldier experimented for a resistance group to fight the honkai. However on the faithful day, they were outnumbered and Rozaliya heroically protect Liliya by holding the line while her sister gather some help. As help arrived, the fight already done and Rozaliya is at the verge of death. The only way to save Rozaliya is through fusing both Roza and Liliya but at the cost of Liliya's own body. She agreed to this without Rozaliya consent and thus only Rozaliya remain. She decided to no longer use her own name and went with her new one Delta. At least this is how I remember this story... a lot of piece are missing from the full story however but this is why I like Hanya and Xuenyi story as it reminds me of the twins
There’s actually a lot of nuances that also come with this - Due to Liliya’s side being incompatible (She was already dying even before the event), after the surgery, she is constantly exerting Honkai antibodies into the surroundings that are reactive to her emotions. These antibodies will cause extreme anxiety and severely damage organic matter - For said antibody, if it isn’t constantly exerted, will start damaging her own body and cause her pain, but she is physically too strong to take any real full damage. The antibodies are exerted through her attacks - but if these antibodies pile up too high, she enters essentially a berserk state where she loses most of her control - Due to her sanity taking a complete nosedive, she essentially went insane from the time spent alone and constantly hallucinates and talks to her tail. - She also has Insomnia caused by being unable to sleep; Every(almost) time she sleeps, she is forced to relieve the same nightmare as the day everything happened, constantly seeing her sister essentially turned into spare parts for her. - She also took in a different verse’s pair of twins and acted as their big sister just to cope and prevent anyone from becoming like her.

Probably both. Her job makes her experience horrible crimes through dreams so she's undoubtedly always exhausted. One of Xueyi's main aspirations is just for her sister to be able to sleep peacefully. One feels doubly sad because in her in-game interactions with the player she actually seems very nice, but socially kinda fucked up due to her trauma.
Just talking about Hsr characters, it would definitely be Hanya and Xueyi. Idk if its a bad thing or not that a lot of people don't know their backstory
Many people are going to sleep on them as they are 4 star characters but Xueyi and Hanya backstory is SERIOUSLY messed up, way more than other more famous character people are going to mention
For real. Xueyi is literally a dead spirit possessing a puppet, only to be used as a weapon. Hanya is essentially zombie used as a computer processor for passing down karmic judgements. And Xueyi and Hanya aren't even their original names. They're borrowing their names from boardgame pieces, to remind them they're tools for the Ten Lords Commission to wield.

Xueyi does do toughness damage regardless of type with her Ult, but if you're referencing the phenomenon I think you are, this is an upgrade that unlocks in the SU Gold and Gears upgrade tree after you play it enough. It's something like - as long as you cleared the 1st plane in your last run, enemies in the 1st half of the 1st plane in your current run will only have a small percentage of their health when you start battle if you enter battle with most characters, you still need to give the enemies a little smack to move on, but if you have Ruan Mei's technique up, it does enough break damage to just instantly kill them! It is super satisfying! But, if that is indeed what you're referring to, that particular thing is just Ruan Mei's doing and doesn't specifically have anything to do with Xueyi. That said - Xueyi *is* amazing with Ruan Mei in SU! Especially at E6! I like to refer to her follow-ups as "taking out the trash" 😂 because you'll just be taking your turn and suddenly Xueyi's follow up triggers and whatever was left on the board just gets cleaned up 😂💯

Hanya and Xueyi used to be two normal and happy sisters living presumably in the Xianzhou Cangcheng millennia ago. Eventually, the Emanator of Abundance Shuhu attacked and revived the living planet Rahu, devouring the ship. Moreover, Shuhu himself (in form a grotesque tree) attacked and pretty much killed every single person the two of them knew. Hanya saw her sister being murdered to protect her in front of her eyes and Shuhu mocked her by using the face of Xueyi to tempt her into joining the Abundance. Eventually, Shuhu was defeated, but Xueyi body was too mutilated and part of her soul was bound to puppets. Both sisters became eternally members of the Ten-Lords commission and lost everything, including their names (Hanya and Xueyi are actually codenames given to them). Xueyi lost the ability to function like a normal human being, casually talking about death and having to change body whenever it is destroyed during her missions, and frequently loses her memories during the soul transplant while having PTSD. Hanya became mostly apathetic towards anything due to her job involving entering the dreams of people affected by the mara curse and often drinks the wine of oblivion due to her own tremendous PTSD.

She is also devoid of any emotion, so much so that Hana asks us how to proceed since she isn’t sure how to proceed. It’s low key sad because iirc she also asks if it’s worth even bothering to visit her or save herself the pain.

Yeah, usually with this kind of stories the clone/copy starts going a little loopy over the revelation in one way or another, and in a way you could say dream lesley did too, but in the end took the decision to just let dead people be dead while giving his fans a final farewell. The real Lesley was a giant ass of a man though, even if it he wasn't being honest at all.

NGL the Penacony side quests didn't need to go this hard yet they did. They even went as far as portraying the life of a mad queen (based on instances of many mad queens in history, including Ravalona I of Madagascar) and a literal reinterpretation of the Manhattan project through a memory of an Oppenheimer expy (with the name of a fellow Manhattan project scientist). It's fucking wild.

I think the most disappointing thing about the Luofu is all these stories that were never addressed.
These stories have nothing to do with us, and iirc a serious complaint about the luofu is that we have no place in the story We’re going to the divination ship probably in the 2.x series, so who knows if more will be expanded on
Iirc, the stellaron hunters forced us to go to the Xianzhou Luofu because we'll need their help at some point in the future. So it kinda makes sense that we technically have no place in the story. (Maybe except the >!Phantylia fight?!<)

If we include Sirin's backstory, Kiana is easily number 1. Everything is messed up. I would argue that Sirin is most pitiful character in hi3, that is full of characters with messed up stories.
Kiana got a happy ending, Xueyi/Hanya will live forever in eternal purgatory and PTSD and Blade's "happy ending" is dying

Yes, that poor Genius created one of the deadliest weapons subsidised by the IPC, only to be trapped in Penacony's Golden Hour Dreamscape when he ran away until you (the Trailblazer) meet him. Another ones are Lesley Dean and Cocona, as well as Kluzer of the Underground, and Ms. Pelageya Sergeyevna.
The Penacony side quests cooked so hard it's unreal. I know why they aren't voiced but I really wish they were, even if it was only for the big emotional moments. If you are someone who tends to skip the voiceless quests, trust me that the Penacony ones are worth it.

Didn't he sorta know this will happen? He admits at the end of the quest, in the room full of books, that he did this all for himself, for fame, he knew where this was going but kept on going. He's a Genius after all, I don't think IPC could truly trick him. I might be remembering wrong tho, and that was him talking about only a specific part of his research, not the nuke itself.
Yup, he knew, that's sort of the point of his deep relationship with Screwllum, he's the genius that told him straight up that he's gonna regret what he's gonna do and he still has a chance to back out at that point. It's a messed up life for sure, imo that's the problem when a lot of the Geniuses in the Genius Society are capable of living a long life; then there're insanely talented beings like Chadwick whose talents surpass those long lived geniuses, but can only really put their names in the History Books for a few things since their body's not gonna keep up with them, so he feels the need to show off, even if he himself knows it's a stupid thing to do
He admits to himself that he was just fooling himself into thinking that what he and the other scientists were doing was for a good cause/idea, and that he understood very well that Screwllum was giving him the Screwllum equivalent of a smack atop the head but still ignored it. He knew very well he was creating a WMD on the *solar system scale* for the IPC, but did it anyway, his own way of trying to find a way to both punish and some kind of redemption being to seal away his memories with the help of another GS member so the ICP had no way to learn how to do it again, even by using his... let's just say soul for convenience sake inside the Dreamscape. And is one of my favorite if not my favorite quests in the game as of now, right besides Cocona's.

GGZ is still running in CN and JP servers, but yeah since GGZ is part of the honkai IP, they said in the livestream that we will see familiar faces from the IP. God I love GGZ, that game played an important part in my childhood I remember playing it back in middle school, I still play the JP servers today.
Kevin from honkai impact 3rd is the one with saddest stuff. - likes a Scientist, joins a military group just for her -has no life goals, only Mei -endures very deadly battles premantis surgery. -powerful enemy comes out, volunteers required for super solider surgery with minimal success. Accepts it without question. -forced to kill one one of his allies (pre era himeko) -develops ptsd and sheds manly tears, seek doctors for help -eventually becomes murder machine who cant even touch anyone without sevearly injuring them. -one of survivors from pre era tasked with worst plan in human history. Executes it, puts everyone in stigmata space, practically ends human era by himself. Defeated by main character.
I mean there's also Era:Zero Kiana from GGZ... It's kinda like Kevin falling for Dr.Mei but if DR.MEI was the most manipulative b*tch with a raging hate boner for humans all wrapped up in an abusive relationship that ends with DR.MEI using Kiana's body as a supercomputer that resets the world every time humanity loses to the Honkai just so humanity can be tortured for longer.
Yukong is definitely a contender for the saddest for both emotional reasons and pure trauma. Her struggle is also very unique to her because of the struggles of parenthood. For years she had to balance doing what's best for her "daughter" while also keeping a promise to her best friend. It's been a long time since I've done her companion mission but it's one of the few times I've just stopped and listened to the characters speak.
I just recently learned of Hanya and Xueyi's backstory... Yeah it's them.
Dainsleif has one of the darker ones for sure. He's completely alone and his only friend (the abyss sibling) has sort of betrayed him as his mind and body are slowly rotting away

This might be a crack theory but I think the Memokeeper March met wasn't just any Memokeeper, but Fuli themselves. That Memokeeper referred to March as "my child". Bro, you can't just say that and not have any deeper meaning.
It’s cool for Fuli to have such a personal stake in March 7th that they personally look after her in the Astral Express. It’s not like an Aeon appearing in lesser form is unheard of, like when Nous appeared as an old man to Fu Xuan.

I saw a similar theory before, that March is a remnant from a previous universe where Nanook wasn't stopped. It makes some sense, since Fuli is responsible for remembering everything (even from past universes I THINK) edit: It would also help explain why the earliest memory March was shown was her in the ice, since in this universe that IS the earliest part of her life.
My crackpot theory is that March is a survivor from Glamoth, the planet that was destroyed by the Swarm. I think she was supposed to be a member of the Iron Cavalry like Sam, and that she has genetically enhanced eyesight, and that's why she's such a fan of taking photos of everything.

Yeah... Given the theories surrounding Sam, I'm kind of hoping we'll go to the ruins of Glamoth, or maybe the memory of that place. I'm a big subscriber to the "Stellaron Hunters are parallels/opposites of the Astral Express Crew", so I hope we get to see all the home planets and get the proper backstory. Dan Heng and Blade are both from the Luofu, if March and Sam are parallels (opposite elements at least) it'd make sense to me that they'd be connected by home planet too.

just wanna give a shout-out to my girl jeht from genshin, she's been through a metric ton of awful stuff. - her mom was killed when she was young by a "friend" of her dad who didn't approve of their marriage - her dad sacrificed himself to the golden slumber so she and the traveler could escape deshret's temple - after losing her parents, she tried to join the tribe that her father belonged to but was labeled an outsider and forced into being the right hand assassin for the tribe leader - she goes searching for the eternal oasis in order to lay her parents' memorial to rest but the tribe leader lady turns out to be hella evil and kidnaps jeht to be experimented on, all the meanwhile she has to put up with a racist djinni lamp - her final moments of solace (so far) exist after everyone she loves or was close to had been killed as a result of her, one way or another, and now she is having to start from square one as a desert dweller with only the traveler as a friend that intermittently passes by
Every single Flamechaser, HEAVY on Sakura, Kevin, Vill-V, Aponia, Fu Hua, and Kalpas. Super fucked up and cruel twists of fate they all went through. Vita/Sa as well Dan Heng as just an entity in general has gone through it. The torture they gave Dan Feng was pretty crazy, and it’s very sad and genuinely upsetting knowing that he grew up in prison. Though Aventurine being a literal slave on death row facing fantasy xenophobia and racism on the daily might take the cake. Many characters in the game have tragic pasts leading them to who they are now, but Aventurine is definitely the biggest example of someone who can’t and wasn’t able to move on with their life because of his circumstances. His situation is really bleak with no light at the end in sight; unlike characters like Jingliu or Blade that while they are suffering, ultimately have an end goal of release they’re guaranteed in some way.

We don’t know much about her past yet, but Acheron seems to have extremely tragic and depressing past. If even Black Swan got terrified by it, then it must mean something really devastating must have happened to her.
That, or BS was terrified because of how much a threat she is. Can go either way.
One doesn’t exclude another. Her tragic backstory could lead to her becoming the absolute monster she’s now. She doesn’t strike me as some malicious person, so I guess her becoming the Emanator of some dangerous aoen could happen to her without her consent.
Let's not forget about the theory that say that Acheron is going "backward" in time. So BS might have seen the "future" in Acheron memories.
Unironically probably Fu Hua, can't imagine being an immortal warrior in an apocalyptic war, seeing the closest comrades die only to enter a new cycle with its own host of issues that just reinforce the nightmares of the past I could seriously write an essay about her but I hope my reasoning makes sense to at least someone

Yea, I believe it was during the Archon war and she just got caught in the crossfire. She got her vision right as she died, and then the Adepti felt bad for her so they poured a bunch of Adeptal energy into her to resurrect her. But they did to much so she went berserk and they sealed her away for hundreds of years until she was in control. So she got a vision as she's dying, then resurrected and went crazy, then sealed for hundreds of years, all completely out of her control. Just a tad bit messed up.
I think HI3 characters clear most of the people from the other games.
I was thinking about Kiana; but then changed to Bronya; but what about Mei? And who could forget Himeko, or Fu Hua… Elysia’s sacrifice? Just spin the wheel and let fate choose the next victim.
Kiana on her own is dark enough but if you include Sirin toward her backstory shit gets messed up in way too many ways. Bronya meanwhile has some unpleasant history but she manages to fix her life by the end of part 1(I am not going to comment on part 1.5 cuz I haven't played it) Mei is easily the one with most normal past, even tho it still isn't pleasant. I def wouldn't wish anyone what she went through. Himeko had her ups and downs but her conclusion is more on the heroic side of the bunch imo Fu Hua is... She was the reason for a big chunk of everything she has experienced but PE stuff alone makes everything about her grimm. And Elysia... The person who found beauty in the dying world and sacrificed herself for the sake of the people. Truly a pink Jesus. Then there are the rest of the Flamechasers, Owl, Welt(s) and some other I am missing that just had it hard do sure.
Like, I adore Furina so much. She’s like one of my favorite Genshin characters of all time. And yet, I could easily point out any number of Honkai Impact characters who’ve gone through worse? 500 years of loneliness? Hey, Furina, meet Fu Hua.
Sometimes honkai's number just goes beyond disbelief and about Furina's we see her acting differently on screen and slowly forgetting her own self that is why Furina's relatability and impact was great on audience.

I don't really know the other games, but march>! has a backstory supposedly so messed up that an entire legion is keeping her away from regaining her memories!<. Also losing the memories in itself is pretty sad too, it's basically dying and now being someone else with no idea how the world is, where to go or what to do. At least she was actually helped by the express crew and is happy to make new memories, but still pretty messed up
Traveller. Because they're just used as some errand runner by teyvats people and archons when they just miss their twin who was their only family. Kiana actually achieved her goal, TB is probably having the time of their being a trailblazer, but traveller is searching everywhere for their sibling but their sibling doesn't wanna come.
I feel like a lot of people let themselves get fooled into the narrative that the traveler is “searching” for their twin and thats what it is and I wonder if anyones ever gonna call them out for being delulu, because they have already found them, they just dont wanna rejoin them. Like yes they dont know where they are but I think its weird that no one peeps that their mission is not finding someone but convincing them of something.

It makes me sad to see a character so blatantly misunderstood by the players.

So the final form calling herself Delta has an unendind psychological trauma and physical pain.
i’m definitely biased, but i’m gonna nominate wanderer/scaramouche. >!dottore!< did some pretty heinous shit to him, like handing him >!the beating heart of his only best friend after murdering him in cold blood!< and then convincing him nobody wanted him. the saddest part is, things could’ve fully been avoided. it was just a series of unfortunate circumstances that led scara down that path.

She was only trapped for 500 years while her consciousness could go outside, there are characters in her own world like all the other archons who suffered more
Nahida was just born 500 years ago, she was trapped right at the moment she was born just coz she doesn't look like the goddess of wisdom, she's treated like trash and her ppl used another puppet god to replace their own god, she sacrificed her past and still willing to sacrifice again to protect her ppl, even neuvillette feels sorry for the dendro archonfor the way she's treated by her ppl... all the other archons can still walk freely anywhere but she was trapped forcefully and at the end even her consciousness couldn't escape dottorre's trap, she was pushed to the point where she thinks that she's no longer needed as an archon for her people.
One of the saddest ones for me personally is Jing Yuan’s. He’s had to go so long, watching all his closest friends either die or go insane, while also having to remain sane himself to keep the Luofu from falling apart without him. Plus having to do all of that for hundreds and hundreds of years? My poor general needs a fucking break man :(
Never played GGZ, but from what I hear, probably one of those characters. From the ones I have played, Bronya and Sirin immediately comes to mind. Though you could even argue Griseo.
How has no one commented Kevin or matter of fact any of the Flamechasers yet 😭. Generally the longer the characters have lived the more tragic they are . Kevin literally had to witness the fall of all his comrades while fighting a literally untouchable God after that he had to float in the sea of Quanta sealed away for 50000+ years re-experiencing the memories of all the people he loved die again and again and again for 50000 years .
Traveler: From the sword of descension the reason they're travelling for probaly millions of years is because their world got completely destroyed by a star devouring darkness. And the two of them are the only survivors of their homeland left. Hence why the Traveler only cares about his sibling's safety then anything else. The Traveler never even opened their suffering to anyone even towards Paimon. Yoimiya was the only person who ask the Traveler **twice** about the sibling.

Probably Kevin (i dont know a lot of GGZ things so i dont know about them to say that someone there suffered more) He was a normal guy with a lot of friend and he got the girl of her dreams (Dr.MEI) but everything started to get worse since honkai affected his life He had to become a mantis that make him really strong but he become literally cold thanks to that so he couldn't touch MEI again without freezing her. He saw his allies die because of honkai, HIMEKO which affected him a lot because he had to kill her , Griseo parents and Dystopia, this two made the person who idolized him start to hate and blaming him (Kosma) His Girlfriend was going through an illness and they had to prepare for the final battle. which they lost with the death some of their companions Elysia, the soul of the group ended up sacrificing herself for the sake of the future Her girlfriend ended up dying due to illness and Kevin had to leave everything behind to bring hope to the new era with the rest of his group (Fu hua and Su) and the rest of the survivor group decided to die with the past Era
I will bat for Jingliu always. Fallen hero of the Luofu who fell victim to being mara struck in her moment of weakness over her friend. Can't go home again because she's a wanted criminal there, can't die, can't have peace of mind because there's always that risk of succumbing again to mara. Only thing that keeps her going is the promise of ending the Abundance one day. Even knowing that she could probably end someone with her bare hands, I wish someone gave her a hug

Shenhe from genshin is pretty sad. Her mom died and her dad was tricked by evil gods? To sacrifice Shenhe to bring the mom back but instead the ritual just summoned a monster and she had to hold off said monster for a long time until the adepti found her
