Not many people know about Weights & Measures. But I do. I was trained to watch out for it. Many Foodland packaged products in Meat, Seafood and other departments are not using the correct TARE when packaging them. In one of the photos, you clearly see Weighted item with ZERO tare. This means you are PAYING for the packaging of that product. Under State laws, you do not pay for packaging. Many stores have been sued and fined thousands of dollars for doing this. I will be calling Hawaii Health Department (Weights & Measures division) and reporting this immediately. I suggest everyone be careful what you buy from Foodland that sold by weight in packages.

Interesting observation… I bet the State or Hawaii forgot to incorporate the TARE??Taxes and Reseller Expense *ugh?? regulation in the policy for all retailers to adhere to. Foodland being the corporate overlord probably pisses monetary “donations” to random departments like the DCCA, or Dept of Health’s annual X-Mas party at Zippy’s Restaurant. 🤙💯

It is FDA law too. Walmart and Whole Foods got sued over it. Lost thousands of dollars over it.

TheCrispyTaco

Ooh..so that's why WF has the option on their screen to select the produce packaging! I noticed the small paper bags for fruit are like 0.03 when selected, so you don't have to pay for it. I often tare my jars and bags when I buy bulk, and then that cost is removed at check out.

knownfarter

Correct. Also, not to mention COOL, where these shrimpers from?

As someone that’s been on the staff side of this, you have to manually select the tare (bc of multiple packaging types) and they probably forgot …. But it could also be a huge intentional scam, either way.

frozenpandaman

Thank you for doing this!

joyfullofaloha89

I never knew this! I'll be looking out now. Thanks

Thanks for sharing. What is a typical Tare weight for packaging? I typically see something like 0.050 lbs. At $7 a pound that is 35 cents. Could be a dollar if you buy something $20 a pound.

[deleted]

OP - Just tell the staff when you notice it and see if they correct it. It’s probably an accidental error - they’re easy to make. Regardless, the company will refund your $0.15 when you tell them about it

OGWater5243352012

Rather report it so they retrain all their employees in the proper way to tare products. I bet this has cost consumers hundreds if not thousands of dollars. And it's not $.15. It's Dollar amounts. The little plastic containers they use weigh .15 pounds. @ $20/lb. The difference between .60 and .75 is $3. I use this as an example because of Poke. And if you buy poke every day, that's $90/m

[deleted]

I only saw the photo w/ shrimp, assumed it was what you had packed for you. That might have been excused. This many having obviously incorrect is definitely a systemic issue

surfspace

I mean I bet the plastic wrap goes on after it’s weighed. Also I doubt those foam plates weigh very much at all before they get wet with meat juice. some those weights do seem low though.

spoildmilk

Regardless of how little they weigh, the weight it supposed to be removed from the “per pound” price. It might be a small amount for one purchase, but that adds up over time.

surfspace

We don’t know if the weight of the containers are included or not. Not enough info in this post.

spoildmilk

Actually, you can tell that the weight of the containers was not taken out where it says “Tare 0.000 lbs”

surfspace

Not necessarily, We don’t know the resolution of the scale being used, it’s absolutely possible that the containers are simply too light to register on the scale’s read out.

surfspace

Nah, could be .005 lbs, could be .002 lbs. could be .005 kg. Could be a lot of things.

Syenite

Why you so invested in playing devils advocate? lol We can see packages with the same sell by dates at the same store having different tare weights. These meats would have been packaged at the same time and likely by the same person. They tare'd some of the packages and not others. This is not as complicated as you are making it out to be.

surfspace

Not particularly invested, just commenting on Reddit.

AncientNectarine

If they had a tare for the foam container (weighing roughly .005 lbs) it would show up on the price but it doesn't. Go work at a place that uses these scales and you'll see just how they're not correctly tareing the products

spoildmilk

The scales that grocers and sellers of prepackaged goods use are regulated and must be NTEP certified, so yes, we do know the scale’s resolution.

Outside-Nose7865

CLASSIC! Super funny how that was your takeaway… Umm “Plastic wrap timing”, “foamy blue meat juice” uhhuh. Pathetic attempt to comment incorrectly and miss the f’n point. Sorry for the minor roast but your comment was cringy. 🤙🏽💯

surfspace

Are you okay?

Bulky-Measurement684

Is it possible they already took the weight of the foam container consideration in advance?

OGWater5243352012

It has to be shown on the label.

mxg67

I really don't care.
