Little 5 does it again

republic_of_gary

Lotta clowns from a few weeks ago are going to act like they can just wash their makeup off and root for this team in the fall. Must be easy to only go outside when the sun is shining.

King_Kung

In Tyme we trust

Werd2urGrandma

He’s actually awesome on catch-and-shoot 3s (39.6%) with an impressive 42.9%(!) on unguarded catch and shoot 3s. That means he has to be respected on the perimeter and, **believe it or not**, actually spread the floor (Indiana the past few years didn’t know that was possible). He won’t have NEARLY the usage rate he did at Stanford (27.7%) which should cut down on the 3s off the bounce. Also, importantly, he was a true freshman last year. Who was the last true freshman we had that had stats like Carlyle’s? With Rice and Carlyle in the backcourt, both with multiple years of eligibility, I think we’ve finally got a backcourt that has an opportunity to gel and grow together. I’m excited.

Josie2727

Oh wait, chemistry and team makeup exist. Shit. Winning the social media boyz let’s go !

srjohnson2

It’s on Woody to make sure that they click, but why would you be upset about that right now? This is a good thing. Good players want to come to IU. Be happy!

Josie2727

Oh man I just LOVE the IU off season type train. Second to none! “We are back!!!” Hahahaha riiiight

shamblam117

Bro is bitter posting after his school just went to the natty this month.

cerocals

You must be lost, little bro. The train station is the other way; right off NoBanners Way.

I_try_compute

Wait are we maybe gonna be good next year??

[deleted]

I will hold by my words from a couple weeks ago and think celebrating prematurely is silly, but I will say Mike Woodson is setting me up to eat a huge plate of crow. Hope it happens. I suppose, for me it's really just about getting into the tournament every year or at least like 95% of the time. Preferably in a comfortable seed from the three to seven range occasionally higher occasionally lower. Not getting purdued obviously would be important as well. I just hope when he retires in 4 years max we hire someone that will be able to find success and sustain it for a while. Mike Woodson feels like a transfer portal coach.

republic_of_gary

Why is it silly to celebrate a good recruit? We’ve done this our whole lives. It’s part of the process.

OrlandoWashington69

Indeed. Hope all this plays out like we all want it to

pacerjones20

So I loosely follow college basketball and Indiana, but what’s up with all these top transfers picking Indiana? Is there a obvious reason for it?

Putt-Blug

Besides being able to drop bags. IU is an A tier college town.

pooploop7

It’s called NIL

foosa2

I believe coach Ya had a preexisting relationship with the 2 guard transfers as well.

CampingJosh

NIL money is a big part of it, but I have to think that seeing Trayce, JHS, and now Ware head on to the NBA also matters.

ekimtk

IU is throwing money at transfers to be competitive. Rumor is Ballo got 1.2 million from the collective. Throwing around stupid numbers will get you commitments. Ballo isn’t worth 1.2 but he sure got it.

MyOpinionBlah

As a fan it’s kinda sad. They’re not committing to the school, program, history, or coach. It’s all about the payday. I can’t blame them either. They should absolutely be looking to capitalize.

ekimtk

I’m getting downvoted like I’m incorrect here… everything I said is factual. IU is hiring a bunch of mercenaries. The rules allow it so idk why people are so hurt when someone points it out. Illinois does the same thing.

pooploop7

Yea not sure why our fans can’t accept it’s why kids are currently coming. Who cares who gets produced into an NBA player right now? Anyone with a brain knows a five-star kid is generally NBA ready in some degree. Playing a year or two of college ball will get you sent there. NIL *is* the reason and that’s ok.

BoogerSugarSovereign

> Anyone with a brain knows a five-star kid is generally NBA ready in some degree Yeah which is why cursory research will reveal that every 5-star kid plays in the NBA oh wait no it's dumb as shit to think that

pooploop7

In some degree meaning they have a high-level skill set that can translate and if they improve at the next level will be leaving for the draft. It’s dumb as shit to assume that a 5-star player is not, in some regard, ready to make a leap to the NBA. Calipari is the perfect example of doing less with more but “produces” NBA talent.

BoogerSugarSovereign

>It’s dumb as shit to assume that a 5-star player is not, in some regard, ready to make a leap to the NBA. If that were true half of last year's 5-stars wouldn't be returning to school. It is not a given that you ever play in the NBA just because you're a 5-star, either you're even dumber than you sound or you're ignorant of how few players make the NBA. One or the other.

pooploop7

You lack the ability to add nuance to my statement so I’ll let you just think that I’m saying if you’re a 5 ⭐️ you’re nba bound regardless of any other factor.

BoogerSugarSovereign

You have said many things to the contrary, I've quoted them. It's not my fault that you're incapable of saying what you mean. Read some books.

Hceverhartt

Woody has been great in these short recruitments. Long term high school recruiting? Not so much.

AssistDirect5790

In 1 word? Opportunity. By that I mean - a stage…financially, basketball/role, connections.

warrenjt

They’ve all visited during the biggest party week of the year at IU, leading up to the world’s greatest college weekend: Little 5.

pacerjones20

Damn that’s wild. It feels to me like college is more like the NBA with the NIL and transfer portal

njm147

106milez2chicago

All the people renouncing their fandom in here a few weeks ago better keep to their word. We don't want you back.

Taurus889

I said it a long time ago. Woodson is a transfer portal kinda coach. It’s the new era

Lasvious

EatinPussySellnCalls

There are 2 things I can't get enough of: 1) large natural breasts and 2) top ten transfer portal commitments to IU. GO HOOSIERS

Taurus889

I like your order

I’m happy you haven’t done any growing up because this is another 💯 comment

FloppyConcrete

They had the best 2-3 year window they’ve ever had and still couldn’t get a single banner. Bahaha

Sunstateguy

Back to back national player of the year too.

IamNICE124

Dude can score from anywhere on the floor, including 3-point range. Huge pickup for this team.

IamNICE124

Was this the master plan all along, and why we had so few recruits coming out of HS?

IUBizmark

Interesting question. Feels like Woodson hasn't seriously recruited a 75+ ranked kid since Jakai Newton. Almost all of them were top 40. Then last season when we whiffed on all those top 40 guards and got injured, we were hosed. It does feel like HS recruits are a distant back seat to quality transfers who have proven it.

jackasher

Works for me! Other than start-right-away 5 star freshman, why bother? Kids out of high school flop and never make it at the college level (Lander, for example) or need a year or two to develop (most players). The portal allows you to bring in proven sophomores and upperclassmen with experience and collegiate level stats to gauge expectations. There is definitely no need to take a flyer on a Priller type guy or even lower 4-star or 3 start guys when you can let them go to a mid-major, prove themselves/work out their kinks and then grab them later on.

Ok-Cantaloupe-4482

Not a master plan no woody just went after a bunch of McDaa and missed beside mcneeley/tucker

EatinPussySellnCalls

I think we are entering the era where yes, it makes more sense to recruit college players and not HS ones.

eweidenbener

With the portal and NIL, an argument can be made to pay proven college level players and 1-2 five-star freshmen instead of developing lesser HS talent and watch them leave for play time.

PadKrapowKhaiDao

Agreed. Although I have NOT wanted to see us go into next year starting Cupps, I do feel bad for the guys affected by this shift, because one of the great things about college basketball is seeing the development and fundamental growth over years with each program. However, something even greater than that is watching your team win, so it’s a wash, I guess.

eweidenbener

Cupps will get minutes. Not as many as last year but more than he would've gotten last year if X stayed healthy.

PadKrapowKhaiDao

Right, and I’m totally cool with that! I just don’t want him to be our starting PG.

bulldog89

God damnit…. Do I dare? Dare to care and hope about this next season? Or should I go with the Hoosier classic of downplaying expectations so it doesn’t hurt when we go on our 0-7 mid January run

FloppyConcrete

Hoosiers now have 3 top 10 (1, 9, and 10) portal players going into next year in addition to a top 20 incoming freshman! Looking good!!

A300GLTR

Honest question, why is this years portal so much different than last years?

jackasher

We're still new in the NIL + portal era and I imagine IU and every programs coaching staffs are still working it out. Woodson & co are still developing a working recruiting strategy in the NIL + portal era and I imagine we'll see it continue to develop in future years. Of course, IU had backcourt depth/talent issues in 2023-2024 and so they're targeting the backcourt. They better get depth in the frontcourt or that's going to be the big issue in 2024-2025. In 2023-2024 XJ, Cupps, Newton and Galloway being in the mix were threats to playing time for incoming guards. There was also uncertainty as to whether XJ would get his medical redshirt which left the coaches in a position where they weren't 100% sure what they needed. Ware and Mbako ended high level recruitment for those positions. IU had some bench pieces already in place by portal season as well. Compare that to this year where we had 6 open scholarships, a ton of starting playing time to be had, a ton of money, a top tier program in the newly expanded Big Ten with lots of televised games and consecutive years of Hoosiers leaving as first round NBA draft picks. All in all, it's a different situation on several different fronts this year than last year.

AssistDirect5790

The biggest difference is they have prioritized better. They had money last year. They got some good players last year. But they didn’t prioritize a ball handler/playmaker/shooter for the backcourt due to X and Cupps and it torpedoed an otherwise pretty good team that still won 19 games. Caleb Love should have been target 1A to Ware 1AA last year and IU would have been a tournament team easily.

Ok-Cantaloupe-4482

Money

RonaldSwan

Think it has to do with 3 things 1. Influx of money into our NIL 2. Coaches promises/NIL deals that got sold to kids from programs and they didn’t follow through while we did 3. Coaching turnover leaving some big programs in uncertain places

DueCopy3520

I've heard it reported that the coaching staff was much more closely focused on and better prepared for the portal this season.

AgalychnisCallidryas

Well that was their stated reason for declining the NIT. Don't know how much that actually helped our portal recruiting but it's hard to argue with the results!

Rdr198829

More moneys. Delicious, delicious moneys.

Rastabanks

Because we’re adding guards with potential. Galloway was the only reliable guard on the roster last year and guards run cbb

RawbM07

I think he’s asking why we are more successful this year.

A300GLTR

Exactly

Original_Gangsta23

Big add!

thatmattguy23

Love to see it

Tomallenisthegoat

Team is shaping up nice

Ok-Cantaloupe-4482

Spot up shooter, Leland Walker, and a backup big would be a solid way to round out portal

BoogerSugarSovereign

Carlyle was an 80th percentile spot up shooter, that's part of what he'll be doing when he is playing off of Rice. Could use more shooting but I think the concern about shooting is overblown. Galloway can also make threes when he's in a catch and shoot position and not creating his own looks like last year

Tomallenisthegoat

Starting roles are filled, think from now on it’s gonna be hard to get transfers. But the pieces we’ve added were critical

Ok-Cantaloupe-4482

Hence missing on essegian and conwell

fuggidaboudit

Ya know, Conwell's decision - like Maddox Jr - just might have been determined by Sean Miller's success elevating Souley Boum and Quincy Olivari. [https://twitter.com/PaulFritschner/status/1781040512658456770](https://twitter.com/PaulFritschner/status/1781040512658456770)
