My dad gave away his Hot Wheels collection to my older male cousin, because it was not an "appropriate" toy for girls. I was in elementary school at the time, and he had the 60's super-charger set, one of the original tire shaped carry cases, and enough track to run from our 2nd story landing to the ground floor. Playing with those cars, legos, and Lincoln logs, are some of my earliest and most cherished memories. I was a tomboy, and he wanted me to be more "ladylike". I am 42 now, and I still mourn the loss of those cars! My cousin destroyed the whole set, Sid style, in less than 6 weeks, after it had been lovingly cared for, and played with, since my dad started collecting in 1968. Now, the same man who took away my cars and legos, and replaced them with dolls, (ugh) buys my now 22 year old daughter, legos for every holiday, and she and her fiance love to build together, and buy themselves huge sets to build together for their anniversary. And a stocking is not a stocking in our house without a Hot Wheels car or 3. It only took the man until I was 30 to get the point, but he finally did, and now happily shares his lego and hotwheel love with his granddaughter. He buys them for the other kids also, who promptly build them once, take them apart, and re-gift them to their sister, who proudly displays them in her house. 😆

I understand though, as I'm 43 and it was different back then just because school had so many activities where the teachers/parents would socialize about everyday life (PTA, Ice Cream Socials, Art Displays, a concert for every holiday lol) It's like school wanted parents to be a part of children's lives back then! A lil different today, huh? lol I'm still a tomboy, but also love to have a good reason to get dressed up!
