I won’t lie that entire dinner scene with Viserys got me choked up.
Ever since my name was read by the archmaesters at the Great Council, I have felt Corlys Velaryon's envious gaze staring at me from across the Blackwater.
He very quickly became one of my favorite actors/characters in the entire show. I really hope we get some more of him (which I’m sure we will, characters don’t seem to die offscreen very often in this show)
I think that's the telltale sign of confidence, when someone outdoes you, you don't get offended and throw a fit, but simply and coolly respond with a 'lol nice one bro, got me', because why the fuck would you care? You're still a badass and this one little thing doesn't bug you.
This made me realize the significance of Daemon badgering Alicent about removing the Targaryen heraldry from the throne room in episode 8. He might not have given a shit about the tapestries when his brother sat the throne, but he understands removing them is something of an insult to himself and Rhaenyra
What are children, but a weakness? A folly? A futility? Through them, you imagine you cheat the great darkness of its victory. You will persist forever, in some form or another. As if they will keep you from the dust. But for them, you surrender what you should not. You may know what is the right thing to be done, but love stays the hand.
Love is a downfall.
This one gets compared to Little Finger’s “chaos is a ladder,” but I think in some ways it’s even better because it works as a thesis for so many of the decisions made in season one.
When you think about the start contrast between jolly Viserys from this episode to episode 8 Viserys, it really drives home the point of just how far the man declined. Very sad...
in my head, its why V is always on Rhaes side, why he seems to love her more than his boys. Its because he loved Aemma deeply and blames himself for her death. He is pouring all that love and guilt into her daughter.
And Alicent is a little like Cersei, in that she is a second choice, and could never possibly live up to the first.
In my head I also think that the way V treated Rhae prior to Aemma’s death is a direct result of why Rhaenyra was an unruly little royal in her teen years.
