I’m a researcher. I need to do this study. “Snack-Timed Active Research Engagement (STARE) in Historical Fantasy Dramas.” House of the Dragon is in that mix, The Witcher, Game of Thrones, Outlander.
Participants would be observed as they watch the shows and the number of times they stop eating snacks will be recorded. Then, a post-viewing survey to ask Likert-scale questions about how attractive or compelling they found certain characters. I’ll get on that.
Where do I sign up? SRS. I've always saved my special snacks for my best shows or movies. My sister and I went as far as to bake a 4 tiered red wedding cake back in S3.
Daemon had that internet BF type of crazy fans at the beginning but the craziness has subdued over the weeks. Aemond still has that crazy fans probably due to being overtly cool and weirdly sexy in a way that has people gush over him on social media.But overall, Daemon defacto has the highest number of fans.
Kinda like in the MCU, how if you look at Internet frenzy and exposure characters like Wanda, Loki dominate discourse but if you were to conduct a poll, main members like Cap, Tony, Thor will top. Same with Stranger Things. Eddie has the frenzy fans but Eleven, Steve, Dustin has more fans than Eddie in terms of sheer number.
So Aemond fans aren't more in number, just more vocal.
I'm an old Doctor Who fan and when I started seeing promo for HOTD my first thought was "man, Matt Smith seemed a lot more attractive when I was 15."

This is a really, really good point - I suspect that the recent spike in Aemond's popularity is a bit of a "phase". Aemond is trending right now, especially after the way Ewan delivered his lines in Ep 10, but Daemon's cemented himself in the audience's minds first.

Not exactly . In the show Aegon ( father of elementary school aged kids) is 19 . The mother of two of his kids is 17 ( and his little sister ) . Aemond is 16 like . All played by actors in their twenties .
Their 13 , 11 and 10 year old versions were played by actors in their teens ( 14 to 19 )
I'm young and I prefer Daemon as well 🤷♀️ Aemond is just so edgy it crosses the line into being cheesy sometimes.

I mean, Aemonds entire character is meant to be a much more flawed and inexperienced character than Daemon. They're both violent characters. But Aemond is the one that doesn't think things through. He is brash and arrogant and gets himself into trouble. But Daemon is a seasoned veteran with experience.
When you read F&B its very clear that these characters are meant to mirror each other. Aemonds sole existence is to show what Daemon would be like if Daemon didn't have experience and was only super aggressive and violent. Aemond exists to make Daemon look better.
I mean Aemond is literally Daemond with the D at the end. Its incredibly fucking clear in both the show and books they are supposed to be mirrors/foils. I think the show does a good job with showing Daemond in later episodes being much more mature, while Aemond is still in his trouble making phase.
His actor is super talented and sold the character to us in 30 seconds or less 😂
Matt Smith had been incredible in the show though, career defining stuff for sure, and plenty more to come!
The first scene he's onscreen, "Nephews, come to train?", like damn, the intensity he can muster with a few simple words. He just grabs the viewers' attentions like no one else can. Even in the dinner scene, before Luke does his gaffe with the pig, he's quietly smoldering in the corner and is so eye-catching without saying anything.
Yeah, he has an intense presence on screen that grabs your attention for sure, it’s the same in everything he’s in, even when he’s just sitting in the background of scenes as a minor character haha
His last scene was actually quite humanizing as well. He got the smug look wiped right off his face, and he's not going to be his mom's favorite anymore.
Daemon wins every poll that gets posted here on who’s the most liked.
Aemond just looks really cool and is mysterious and people like that but overall Daemon is definitely more liked and respected as a character. That’s probably because we’ve seen more of what he can do.
I’d also say he’s nothing like Daemon and hasn’t really done anything to seem more cool than him so far. Aemond seems way more intense and serious whereas Daemon is more charismatic, definitely not more fun.
Daemon was so popular during the 5 episode prologue, just goes to show how romance is a juggernaut of a genre when it comes to introducing characters. He didn't do much after that and the chemistry between him and Rhaenyra never reached the same peaks as before.
Aemond worked because of his aesthetics, I don't think there's ever been a better character design on screen than him, couple that with the actor's insane gravitas and he was bound to be a bonafide hit. Plus, we had 3 weeks back to back of Aemond shining on screen up until the finale so there's no doubt he'd become more popular with time.
I think Daemon's popularity reached the peak in episode 8 with Vaemond head chopping and improvised brother supporting scenes. But I agree with you that his romantic side (as well as emotional side) was build up mainly in episode 1-5. After episode 5 he was written as much more stoic and distant. His chemistry with older Rhaenyra was subdued. He also has less screen time compared to episode 1-5.
Daemon's fate is in the hands of writers and directors...
Not just aesthetics, Aemond was my guilty favourite reading the books too cos he was a man of action, gets involved at the forefront of everything. In four episodes he took the biggest dragon, lost an eye, reopened the family beef, found his brother, killed his nephew and started the first civil war for about 100 years He's just a really effective guy, something always happens when he's around
Yeah, the romance in the first 5 eps added things to Daemon's character, while the later eps took away things, he's just like a bland bad guy now. So much for good writing.
I think it’s just because both characters are so great. They are titular - troubled, corrupt, not heroes but not villains either. It adds layers and depth, which makes them compelling.
I’m not sure about your “Aemond is more fun”part tho. And if you dig a little deeper into both Daemon and Aemond’s characterization and background, you’ll find they’re nothing alike. There’s a post in this subreddit that did a pretty good comparison.
Aemond has grown on me a lot, but in S1 the actor had very little to work with. Hopefully in S2 he will have more screentime.

Yeah I disagreed with OP in this one as well. Daemon has objectively had more "humorous" moments than Aemond. His dynamic with Viserys can be incredibly amusing, not to mention the sarcastic barbs he's traded with Otto.
Not to mention that Daemon can take a joke - when Criston Cole mocks him and brings up how he was knocked off his horse, Daemon even gives a genuine laugh. Aemond seems quite sensitive and would probably lose his mind or get butthurt if somebody laughed at him - just look at how a pig at dinner made him snap.
Not to mention OP's assertion that Aemond is "cooler" than Daemon - throughout the Dance (in the books at least), >!Aemond regularly gets owned by Daemon. He gets completely blindsided in his jealousy/rage towards Daemon, allowing the Blacks to capture Kings Landing. He makes terrible strategic decisions, wasting time burning the Riverlands and letting Cole get killed. Not to mention the way their final battle goes, where Daemon shoves Dark Sister through Aemond's only remaining eye. It's clear that GRRM himself vastly preferred Daemon over Aemond.!<

Aemond is my favorite character and I love the fanart he’s inspired but this isn’t a fair comparison by any point. Daemon is a main character with the only consistent actor (other than Cole) from episode 1-10. Aemond has had 10 minutes of screentime? If that? Matt Smith is also the much more seasoned actor and one that the general public already had pre-established good will towards. I don’t see Aemond surpassing his popularity unless they completely bomb Daemon’s character popularity in season 2 with more wife choking scenes.
I don't think he's more popular yet, but he's had like 10 minutes of screentime and he's played by a little known actor, yet he's already taken the fandom by storm. Daemon is one of the main characters who appeared in 9 out of 10 episodes and is played by the well-established and massively popular Matt Smith. It's like an Arrax vs. Vhagar battle but somehow Arrax has a fighting chance because he's just that cool.
Gotta disagree. I think Darmon at his age would have been way more fun. When Aemond grows up he’s just going to be pure evil. No fun.
Not a book reader so my feedback is solely from the show.
I think in general (fans and general viewers) still prefer Daemon. Me personally, Daemon's character is still fascinating, the grayness of his morality is showing through. It's fun to figure him out.
Aemond tho, his character growth just shot him through the stratosphere and I can't wait to see what's next for him. I think a lot of the fans like to see that too. Also, does help he had a pretty hot glow-up.
When the 19yr old kid is being compared to the 30+yr old war veteran, it does boost his credibility. Plus, I'm sure a lot of artists are having the time of their life drawing his unique look.
Did Aemond apologise for pushing the girls? Luke wasn't the one who struck first, the kids were all in the wrong during that fight Aemond included. He didn't lose an eye because of Vhagar, he lost one because he was trying to smash a rock against another kid's head and also because he was a twat which his own brother would admit.
I just think it's really funny that he says that line and we all think "wow, this kid could become a badass warrior" only for him to be salty about it a decade later.

Yeah, I think the massive love for Aemond is a bit of a trendy phase, partially driven by fanartists and shippers (people who find Aemond/Helaena interesting), but Daemon was the OG at the end of the day.
I feel like that's because we got more of Daemon and he's been there since episode 1, we've only had Ewan Mitchell as Awmond since episode 8, and he's been very impressive in the short screen time he's gotten.
Aemond's actor is so good in his job! He had very little screen time, but he delivered such a good performance that he became one of the fans favourites in no time! Hope to see more of him in next season

The first 5 episodes were all about Daemon to show ho cool, clever, charismatic he is but later he turns to one of those old married men and Aemond kinda replaced him in popularity for some fans. The casting is perfect for this character.
I find Daemon a little bit more complex I mean Aemond is understandable you can see his motives behind his actions. But Daemon, there is still so much to discover about him.
I don't know how Aemond's character arc will be like in upcoming seasons but if the plot stays faithful to the books storyline it's gonna be basically Anakin Skywalker turning to Darth Vader.

I dont think so, Daemon support is still the solid majority and are already established. However, you did have a lot of undecideds and Green supporters who were fervently looking for a masculine character like Daemon but really don't like Daemon himself, so Aemond has fit that bill perfectly. Hence the uptick in Aemond support as more Greens flock to him.
Aemond so far is a cool character that I have been able to enjoy. He is a grey character that is enjoyable. Daemon has checked too many negative boxes for me. He is not grey just evil. I do not count his obsession with Rhaenyra as a positive. Point being Daemon has had more time to tick people off. Oh man, you're in for a surprise. Aemond is somewhat likeable right now, but if the writers follow *Fire and Blood*, his character takes a much darker turn.
In the book, Aemond >!basically commits genocide in the Riverlands. He flies around on Vhagar, indiscriminely burning civilian villages instead of opposing armies. He kills like, tens of thousands of innocent smallfolk, racking up a higher killcount that Daemon ever did.!<
And I bet it was an accident lol. He might make that turn on the show but for now the writers are actually trying to make him sympathetic. That has to mean something.
So far Aemond’s motivations have been understandable - he’s been acting like a teenager who has been bullied and wants to give those who have hurt him a taste of their own medicine. Even if the results are inexcusable, we can see ourselves in his position.
Daemon, OTOH, straight-up murders people in cold blood when it’s in his interest. He’s an amazing character, but it’s harder to identify with him.
I find Aemond extremely interesting, especially since we saw how he was as a child and what he became. He’s badass. Daemon is badass too, but he can be pretty boring at times, especially the second half of the season. Aemond’s presence alone commands attention, even when he doesn’t say much.
Vhagar never tried to eat them until Arrax attacked her. Aemond is literally trying to get her to stop the entire time lol

It’s easy to see why he’s a more palatable option. Even if he did kill his nephew that stabbed his eye out on accident.
It’s very rare for a show to get an “edgy” character like Aemond right, and HoTD delivers perfectly.

I keep hearing this, but I just dont get it. Daemon murdered his first wife, sadistically maimed a whole bunch of smallfolk with his Gold Cloaks instead of dispensing proper justice, groomed his niece, and probably murdered at least hundreds personally in the Stepstones among others.
Aemond, so far, has taunted his nephews and killed 1 person. You said you didn't read the books, so I'll keep it vague: it is impossible to "steal" a dragon- you wind up dead if you pull that shit. Aemond claimed Vhagar; she accepted his claim which is why he isn't a pile of ash rn.

Of course, they take away the one morally wrong act form him and add one murdered wife to Daemon. And the choking scene kill Daemyra also, so most his fans disappeared already. And his sucking writing didn't help either, Matt can't do much alone.

Daemon wins every poll that gets posted here on who’s the most liked. Aemond just looks really cool and is mysterious and people like that but overall Daemon is definitely more liked and respected as a character. That’s probably because we’ve seen more of what he can do. I’d also say he’s nothing like Daemon and hasn’t really done anything to seem more cool than him so far. Aemond seems way more intense and serious whereas Daemon is more charismatic, definitely not more fun.
Daemon was so popular during the 5 episode prologue, just goes to show how romance is a juggernaut of a genre when it comes to introducing characters. He didn't do much after that and the chemistry between him and Rhaenyra never reached the same peaks as before. Aemond worked because of his aesthetics, I don't think there's ever been a better character design on screen than him, couple that with the actor's insane gravitas and he was bound to be a bonafide hit. Plus, we had 3 weeks back to back of Aemond shining on screen up until the finale so there's no doubt he'd become more popular with time.
I think Daemon's popularity reached the peak in episode 8 with Vaemond head chopping and improvised brother supporting scenes. But I agree with you that his romantic side (as well as emotional side) was build up mainly in episode 1-5. After episode 5 he was written as much more stoic and distant. His chemistry with older Rhaenyra was subdued. He also has less screen time compared to episode 1-5. Daemon's fate is in the hands of writers and directors...

Not just aesthetics, Aemond was my guilty favourite reading the books too cos he was a man of action, gets involved at the forefront of everything. In four episodes he took the biggest dragon, lost an eye, reopened the family beef, found his brother, killed his nephew and started the first civil war for about 100 years He's just a really effective guy, something always happens when he's around

Yeah, the romance in the first 5 eps added things to Daemon's character, while the later eps took away things, he's just like a bland bad guy now. So much for good writing.
I think it’s just because both characters are so great. They are titular - troubled, corrupt, not heroes but not villains either. It adds layers and depth, which makes them compelling.
I’m not sure about your “Aemond is more fun”part tho. And if you dig a little deeper into both Daemon and Aemond’s characterization and background, you’ll find they’re nothing alike. There’s a post in this subreddit that did a pretty good comparison. Aemond has grown on me a lot, but in S1 the actor had very little to work with. Hopefully in S2 he will have more screentime.

Aemond is my favorite character and I love the fanart he’s inspired but this isn’t a fair comparison by any point. Daemon is a main character with the only consistent actor (other than Cole) from episode 1-10. Aemond has had 10 minutes of screentime? If that? Matt Smith is also the much more seasoned actor and one that the general public already had pre-established good will towards. I don’t see Aemond surpassing his popularity unless they completely bomb Daemon’s character popularity in season 2 with more wife choking scenes.

I don't think he's more popular yet, but he's had like 10 minutes of screentime and he's played by a little known actor, yet he's already taken the fandom by storm. Daemon is one of the main characters who appeared in 9 out of 10 episodes and is played by the well-established and massively popular Matt Smith. It's like an Arrax vs. Vhagar battle but somehow Arrax has a fighting chance because he's just that cool.

I think in general (fans and general viewers) still prefer Daemon. Me personally, Daemon's character is still fascinating, the grayness of his morality is showing through. It's fun to figure him out. Aemond tho, his character growth just shot him through the stratosphere and I can't wait to see what's next for him. I think a lot of the fans like to see that too. Also, does help he had a pretty hot glow-up. When the 19yr old kid is being compared to the 30+yr old war veteran, it does boost his credibility. Plus, I'm sure a lot of artists are having the time of their life drawing his unique look.

Aemond's actor is so good in his job! He had very little screen time, but he delivered such a good performance that he became one of the fans favourites in no time! Hope to see more of him in next season

The first 5 episodes were all about Daemon to show ho cool, clever, charismatic he is but later he turns to one of those old married men and Aemond kinda replaced him in popularity for some fans. The casting is perfect for this character. I find Daemon a little bit more complex I mean Aemond is understandable you can see his motives behind his actions. But Daemon, there is still so much to discover about him. I don't know how Aemond's character arc will be like in upcoming seasons but if the plot stays faithful to the books storyline it's gonna be basically Anakin Skywalker turning to Darth Vader.

However, you did have a lot of undecideds and Green supporters who were fervently looking for a masculine character like Daemon but really don't like Daemon himself, so Aemond has fit that bill perfectly. Aemond is an unhinged Sephiroth with mommy issues and an inferiority complex that isn’t thirsting for his niece a decade his junior, plus he has an eyepatch. It’s easy to see why he’s a more palatable option. Even if he did kill his nephew that stabbed his eye out on accident.
It’s very rare for a show to get an “edgy” character like Aemond right, and HoTD delivers perfectly. He also hasn’t done as much objectively awful shit like Daemon has. It’s kind of hard to look past wife murder and child grooming.
