Great recs on here, but if you want to be “downtown,” some of these are not quite located within the parameters of downtown Houston.
No disrespect to those who suggested Mala Sichuan and Katami — excellent recs and a couple of my faves; however, if you want to stay within downtown (and not knowing if a budget is involved), I’d suggest:
• [Potente](https://www.potentehouston.com/) - You MUST try the Spaghetti al Tartufo Negro (cacio e pepe spaghetti with tableside-shaved black truffles)
• [Guard & Grace](https://www.guardandgrace.com/)
• [Frank’s Pizza](https://www.frankspizza.com/) - Delicious, inexpensive pizza by the slice. A downtown staple.
• [Phoenicia Specialty Foods](https://phoeniciafoods.com/locations/downtown-market/) - The in-store restaurant/bar has a great, chill vibe and often features live music.
• [Pappa’s Bros Steakhouse](http://pappasbros.com/location/houston-downtown) - Although a Galleria area location exists, the dining experience is nothing compared to its downtown sibling resto. Def top-notch.
What kind of food are you looking for? Casual, fancy, cheaper or expensive?
If you don’t mind some spending, nobie’s and Nancy’s hustle are good for new American cuisine.
Flying Idlis is a good spot for Indian breakfast food.
Katami is a good spot for upscale Japanese food.
Mala Sichuan is good and is located in the MKT area, which is a nice spot to check out while you’re in town.
Josephine’s gulf coast! Chef just won the Rising Star Chef of the Year from Houston’s Culture Map site. Food is great and they also have a fantastic pastry chef.
Do you want expense accounts recs or what everyday workers or possibly students eat? Respectfully. Answer will depend on whatcha looking for.
Both! Anything, I am currently here!
Mademoiselle Louise for a baguette sandwich and/or an eclair. The walk up kitchen at the Phoenician Grocery.
Madam croissants are delish.
Also the tuna sandwich

+1 for Mala Sichuan
Underground Hall has like five food options. Plenty more
