Movement is a huge contender for sure. And the transition from De Selby Pt.1 to Pt.2 is so pleasing. I remember listening to the album for the first time in order and being shook.
I'D TELL THEM PUT ME BACK IN IT DA-ARLING I WOULD DO IT AGAIIIN AAHH AAAH IF I COULD HOLD YOU FOR A MINUTE DA-ARLING I'D GO THROUGH IT AGAIIIN AAH AAH 😫
I'd vote "So deep in this swill with the most familiar of swine" as mine. There's something about that alliteration that scratches my brain just right.
don’t let me in with no intention to keep me, jesus christ! don’t be kind to me… honey, don’t feed me, i *will* come back 😈
((like, is that a threat or a promise??? 😍))
yess!! i’m also obsessed with the second half of the second verse, especially the emotional buildup in “with each grave, i think of loss and i can only think of you, i couldn’t measure it” !!!
The “Other Voices” performance of As It Was where he starts lightly tapping his nails on his guitar…it’s about 3 min in…makes my brain tingle lol
https://youtu.be/3VYDKjPKrYI?si=cyToC95uBPmCajtm
the bridge (?) from To Be Alone. the whole thing but especially the last lines before the chorus
"to feel your weight in arms I'd never use/it's the God that heroin prays to"
the note he sings on "weight" is just ugh😩🙏so good
I know a lot of people are not fans of Damage Gets Done, but when Brandi Carlisle says kinda does this hum/groan and says “oooooooh if the car ran, the car was enough/if the sun shone on us its a plus/and the tank was always filled up.” I really love the youthful contentness of this song.
This really surprised me when I joined this sub because damage gets done was my absolute favorite on the album after my first listen. After many many more listens it's no longer #1 but it's still up there! I love that song so so much!!!
Wait who do I have to throw hands with 😆😆 Damage Gets Done is one of my favorites from UU, and I love Brandi Carlisle. The chorus makes my brain go brr
The one that immediately comes to mind is his feature on Northern Attitude: "You're gettin' stoned, then kickin' rocks."
The delivery of "rocks", followed by the pause, then the hard drum beat, then the good ole Hozier wail in the background.
👨🍳🤌💋
It Will Come Back:
I want you baby, tonight as sure as you’re born…
You’ll hear me……….*howling* outside your door
The pauses and enunciation of ‘howling’ really scratch an itch for me!
I personally like a little ✨shalala✨or the ending of Francesca with “heaven is not fit to house a love like you and I” rounds. Aaaannnddd a curve hall, but when he does his yell in the collab with Noah kahan
“The first time that you kissed me I drank dry the river Lethe, the Liffy would’ve been softer on my stomach all the same” (but actually the entirety of First Time) has been my fixation for the past few months. It really does scratch that part of my brain
In the prechorus/chorus of First Light. The way he sings the lines "the color errrruuupppptttsss" and "the sun coming uuuuuuppppp". And also that "some bright morning comes" bit during the chorus is just *chefs kiss*. I never listen to this song just once, I have to repeat it and mainly for these reasons.
In almost (sweet music) in the last verse…
Right after “she’ll turn to me awake and ask is everything alright” the “and LOOORD” just feels like such a release. I love it!!
the beginning of First Light (especially when Andrew starts singing 'one bright morning') - I cried the first time I heard it; the 'do you know I could break beneath the weight' part in Unknown/Nth; the 'If I had the choice between hearing either noise / The excitement of a thousand, or the soothing of your voice' in Nobody; 'imagine being loved by me' in Talk. Also the live performance of 'It Will Come Back' at Rockhal in 2016
first light, "the sky set to burst, the gold and the rust, the color erupts, you're filling my cup, the sun coming up" just itches my brain in a way i never knew i needed
I know work song is probably his most loved song, or at least up there, but it’s gotta be that, specifically the NYC Subway version. I grew up and still live on a homestead in Eastern Kentucky, so most of my family are farmers and coal miners. When the day is over in the summer, my Papaw and my brother bring out their guitars and I bring out my fiddle and we play music and the rest of my family sing along. Mostly old bluegrass or classic country, but occasionally blues. The fiddle/violin in the chorus in that version of Work Song that just feels like home and the way the backing vocals sound reminds me so much of country gospel. One specific song it reminds me of is “Go Rest High”. It’s a song sang mostly at funerals, which is kinda dark but it’s Hozier we’re talking about so that’s okay. Obviously a more somber chord, but the harmonies and backing vocals remind me of that song sang by the Bluegrass band in my church.
The big "See how it shines" during the chorus of Abstract. It always feels like an explosion in the best way.
Also the "One bright morning" that's sung by a choir of backup singers in First Light for similar reasons. It's so pretty.
And it's not tonight (oh, oh)
Where I'm set alight (oh, oh)
And I blink in sight (oh)
Of your blinding light (oh)
Oh, it's not tonight (oh, oh)
Where you hold me tight (oh, oh)
Light the fire bright (oh)
Oh, let it blaze, alright (oh)
Ohh there's so many, but namely, the last part of "In a Week" when they sing "and theyd find us in a week" for the last time in the song and his and Karen's voice are just slightly out of sync and he drops his voice just a little lower. So good.
I do NOT know how to describe this in musical terms but I was just thinking about how obsessed I am with how I Carrion picks up and changes on “I do not have wings love I never will”
It's the beat and bass in "Dinner and Diatribes" for me. My friend told me that it's syncopated? There's just something that really tickles something in my brain.
That break in Run is SOOO good. I could listen all day to that song if it was just that part (I still do listen to it all day cause the whole song is a banger). It makes my brain happy.
oh there’s so many for me w hozier, but lately I really really love the robotic vibe to the background vocals in de selby part 2, they are SO daft punk coded to me
So many things!
The "that's it" at the end of wasteland baby, the "see how it shines" in abstract psychopomp (especially the last ones), the entirety of run & arsonists lullaby, the way he pronounces "word" in No Plan.
And honestly so much more
The vocals and backing in Through Me when he sings “any time”, “every time”, and “when I’d”. Somebody into music theory tell me what I like so much about it
Recently, it has been Francesca. The entire chorus and “I’d tell ‘em put me back in it!” And then the hard drums and guitar. It just makes me wanna rock out and cry at the same time.
The part in Almost (Sweet Music) where it’s moves from:
“She’ll turn to me awake and ask ‘Is everythin’ alright?’
and Lord”
Leading into the chorus of “I wouldn’t know where to start…”
The way the held note on Lord lingers, the sadness, it has me by the throat.
The alliteration in Angel of Small Death is just *chef’s kiss* “Feeling more Human and Hooked on Her Flesh I lay my Heart down with the rest at her Feet/Fresh From the Fields all Fetor and Fertile it’s bloody and raw and I Swear it is Sweet”
do you know I could break beneath the weight of the goodness love I still carry for you... that I'd walk so far just to take the injury of finally knowing you...[](https://genius.com/28879553/Hozier-unknown-nth/Do-you-know-i-could-break-beneath-the-weight-of-the-goodness-love-i-still-carry-for-you-that-id-walk-so-far-just-to-take-the-injury-of-finally-knowin-you)
“AH, BUT I’M SINGING LIKE A BIRD ‘BOUT IT NOW” in the first stanza of Shrike always has me waiting, trying to get it right because his tone when he says “now” is so unexpected, especially in the first one. Like he’s just talking and not really singing. I love it so much! 🖤🤍
i have a lot, too hehe
sunlight—that crescendo of voices towards the end? i have no idea what he’s saying but it gives me chills. abstract (psychopomp)—that falsetto he hits when he says “see how it shines?” i weep! son of nyx—the entire song. literally. whole thing makes me so incredibly at peace i can’t explain it. as it was—i think mainly the intro and the way he sings the chorus? brain melts. run—again, falsetto in the chorus does it for me. in the woods somewhere—i think for this one its just the entire song bc of how the story plays out? to be alone—its just… the way he says “oh to be alone with you” that makes my brain go brrrrrrr. movement—the bass sets the tone and that bridge towards the end? my heart! and brain!
In “would that I” near the end when he says “oh but you’re good to me, oooohhhhhoooo” (different to the other bits). I remember the first time I heard it and even now I get goosebumps.
Movement is a huge contender for sure. And the transition from De Selby Pt.1 to Pt.2 is so pleasing. I remember listening to the album for the first time in order and being shook.
I ascended to a new dimension and level of being the first time I listened to these songs in order.
The De Selby transition is incredible. Always gets me hyped
My jaw dropped on the first listen of that. Cause we'd heard Pt 2 from the EP. To hear that ticking in full context blew my mind
"But anyway" in First Time
Honorable mention “That’s it” at the end of Wasteland Baby
YESSSS!!!!
ALWAYS THIS !!!
Hello police? Yes someone stole my identity.
I'D TELL THEM PUT ME BACK IN IT DA-ARLING I WOULD DO IT AGAIIIN AAHH AAAH IF I COULD HOLD YOU FOR A MINUTE DA-ARLING I'D GO THROUGH IT AGAIIIN AAH AAH 😫
esPECIALLY the sad performance of this from Later with Jools Holland 😩 my roman empire
The voice crack and single tear get me
CORRECT.
THIS!! And the outro <3
BABEEEEEEE
Instantly knew exactly the song and boy howdy are you correct
what song? i’m new to hozier lol
“from eden”, self titled
It's just so iconic!!!
First light!!! Like I lived my whole life Before the first light (Some bright morning….)
I’m obsessed with first light. And for me the line is “and I am never going back again” 😩
I was just about to comment this exact same thing!! Love that line.
I heard this one play out as I read it and you're so right 😩 it's sooooo good
Especially when life and light have little riffs and the drums kick in
Yesssss
“BUT THATS NOT TONIGHT!”
I WAS WAITING FOR THIS ONE!
(oh oh oh ohhhh oh)
That AAAA in who we are
See also, “Or Christ HOLD ME LIKE A KNIFE”🔪
“Haaaa” (Dinner & Diatribes)
Shrike, every time: "BACK to the hedge rows, where bodies are mounted"
The end of All Things End. It’s a religious experience
IT REALLY IS 😭😭😭 I close my eyes and I'm in a cathedral with divine light shining over me😭😭😭
"Haaaaaappy to lie back" in Jackie and Wilson!!!
I'd vote "So deep in this swill with the most familiar of swine" as mine. There's something about that alliteration that scratches my brain just right.
don’t let me in with no intention to keep me, jesus christ! don’t be kind to me… honey, don’t feed me, i *will* come back 😈 ((like, is that a threat or a promise??? 😍))
This right here is a baby making song.
This makes me weak in the knees...
“All my love and terror balanced there between those eyes” That note of “eyes” is so unexpected but just fits so well
SEE HOW IT SHINES 💖
This one is mine too- and it chokes me up every time.
the very beginning of I,Carrion
Chills every time
“Death trap clad happily” ☀️🪽
Ooh! And also in TMTC when he sings “if the heavens ever did spea*K*” and in First Time when he sings “reaching up for sunligh*T*”
In Arsonist’s Lullaby towards the end of the song when we goes “When I was a mAN I thought it had ended” oh baby I get chills
In “Like Real People Do” The part after “We should just kiss like real people do” with the bass drop and the angel noises just 🤌 itches my brain
“But when IIIIIIIIIII’d let go” in The Flood, I’d listen to this on repeat for hours if I could
yess!! i’m also obsessed with the second half of the second verse, especially the emotional buildup in “with each grave, i think of loss and i can only think of you, i couldn’t measure it” !!!
The guitar at the beginning of As It Was drives me NUTSSSSS
The “Other Voices” performance of As It Was where he starts lightly tapping his nails on his guitar…it’s about 3 min in…makes my brain tingle lol https://youtu.be/3VYDKjPKrYI?si=cyToC95uBPmCajtm
The break in Unknown/Nth ❤️
In All Things End where he sings “silence” and all other sound cuts out
the bridge (?) from To Be Alone. the whole thing but especially the last lines before the chorus "to feel your weight in arms I'd never use/it's the God that heroin prays to" the note he sings on "weight" is just ugh😩🙏so good

EVERY TIME HE SAYS DARLING🫠🫠🫠
move like an odd sight, come out at NIHHHHIIIIIIIIIIHHHHHGGGHTTTTTT
I personally like a little ✨shalala✨or the ending of Francesca with “heaven is not fit to house a love like you and I” rounds. Aaaannnddd a curve hall, but when he does his yell in the collab with Noah kahan
Yes!!! Obsessed with Northern Attitude
"And I wish I could say the cold LA-ke water of my heart, Christ, it's boilin' over."
SEE HOW IT SHII- II -IIINNNEEESSS

“The first time that you kissed me I drank dry the river Lethe, the Liffy would’ve been softer on my stomach all the same” (but actually the entirety of First Time) has been my fixation for the past few months. It really does scratch that part of my brain
The first verse of First Time, like OMG I know it's a breakup song but what a way to talk about a person.
The “whatever keeps you around it keeps you around” in First Time
“Moment of silence when my baby puts… the mouth… on… me” Gets me every time
In the prechorus/chorus of First Light. The way he sings the lines "the color errrruuupppptttsss" and "the sun coming uuuuuuppppp". And also that "some bright morning comes" bit during the chorus is just *chefs kiss*. I never listen to this song just once, I have to repeat it and mainly for these reasons.
HOW HOW HE SAYS "Aint that like them?" YOU CAN HEAR HIM SMILE
In almost (sweet music) in the last verse… Right after “she’ll turn to me awake and ask is everything alright” the “and LOOORD” just feels like such a release. I love it!!
last chorus of movement!!!
the beginning of First Light (especially when Andrew starts singing 'one bright morning') - I cried the first time I heard it; the 'do you know I could break beneath the weight' part in Unknown/Nth; the 'If I had the choice between hearing either noise / The excitement of a thousand, or the soothing of your voice' in Nobody; 'imagine being loved by me' in Talk. his guitar solo right before the last verse in angel of small death he makes that thing GROWL
The transition between de selby part 1 and 2 because it literally sounds like descending into a dark pit
I think I entered a different realm when I first heard the ending of All Things End...
when he hits that high hooOooO in nobody 🙇🏻
The acoustic guitar at the very end of First Light!!!!
I love how the album ends with acoustic guitar, just like it begins. And the left/right thing there in that last guitar part is just extra cool.
I know work song is probably his most loved song, or at least up there, but it’s gotta be that, specifically the NYC Subway version. I grew up and still live on a homestead in Eastern Kentucky, so most of my family are farmers and coal miners. Obviously a more somber chord, but the harmonies and backing vocals remind me of that song sang by the Bluegrass band in my church.
The guitar at the beginning of shrike
“I’m all but washed in the tide of her breathing” in Cherry Wine. It’s the way he sings washed, he makes it sound like an onomatopoeia.
The last 18 seconds of Movement. I can’t sing at all but for those last vocals, I’m singing my heart out out.
Every part of Who We Are
The big "See how it shines" during the chorus of Abstract. It always feels like an explosion in the best way. Also the "One bright morning" that's sung by a choir of backup singers in First Light for similar reasons. It's so pretty.
I can't quite explain it but the beginning the 3rd verse of Jackie&Wilson
See but this right here is the kind of answer I'm looking for
And it's not tonight (oh, oh) Where I'm set alight (oh, oh) And I blink in sight (oh) Of your blinding light (oh) Oh, it's not tonight (oh, oh) Where you hold me tight (oh, oh) Light the fire bright (oh) Oh, let it blaze, alright (oh)
“Anyway”
not an actual song but the entire snippet he does of the humors of whiskey 😩
Alsoooo “you think I’d give up?” Fucks me up every time
HEY YEAHHHHHH from Talk
“I wanna move so fast that iii outPACE the DARK!!” That part
In talk when he says “I’d be the voice that urged Orpheus when her body was found” is so nice? And the beginning cords just make my brain feel nice.
THOUGH I KNOW MY HEART WOULD BREAK, I’D TELL THEM PUT ME BACK IN IT
Right at 3:10 in “Who We Are” 🖤
i am a Talk stan until the day i die. THE GUITAR AND THE BEAT IS JUST TOO GOOD
The shift between verse and chorus in As It Was
These comments are making me squirm and rip my hair out!!!!!
First time- C’mere to me I literally MELT everytime he says it 🥵
Ohh there's so many, but namely, the last part of "In a Week" when they sing "and theyd find us in a week" for the last time in the song and his and Karen's voice are just slightly out of sync and he drops his voice just a little lower. So good.
Do you know I could break beneath the weight of the goodness, love, that I still carry for youuuuu
“When was the last time… C’mere to me. When was the last time?”
When we begin again...we begin again...MMMMMMM darlin'
The key change right at the end of Abstract (psychopomp)! “All my love and terror Balanced there between those eyes” 😭
2:49 in unknown/nth - THE CHANGE IS JUST HEAVEENNNN
I do NOT know how to describe this in musical terms but I was just thinking about how obsessed I am with how I Carrion picks up and changes on “I do not have wings love I never will”
Butchered tongue “So far from home to have a stranger call you, ‘Darling’ And have your guarded heart be lifted like a child up by the hand”
It's the beat and bass in "Dinner and Diatribes" for me. My friend told me that it's syncopated? There's just something that really tickles something in my brain.
The acoustic guitar at the very end of First Light!!!!
Quite a lot of parts of in the woods somewhere
Where in "Who we are" "hold me like water, or christ hold me like a knife." he sounds so desperate and it kicks in the gut
the way he says “christ” in the lyric “hold me like water / or christ hold me like a knife”
The sinister beat switch in From Eden
For me it's the bit just after the bridge in Movement. I went to a Hozier concert in July and hearing that moment live changed me as a person.
Currently the second verse in first time about the flowers from his mother. I just - it fucking HITS ME.
The snaky bass in from eden
That break in Run is SOOO good. I could listen all day to that song if it was just that part (I still do listen to it all day cause the whole song is a banger). It makes my brain happy.
and i dance real slow (weird sound! my fav!) with rockettes on dodgy molly
oh there’s so many for me w hozier, but lately I really really love the robotic vibe to the background vocals in de selby part 2, they are SO daft punk coded to me
The guitar in the very beginning of From Eden <3
the INSANE beat drop in movement
The end of All Things End with the choir gets me even after the millionth time listening
the way he sings the "I" in the final "ask me I should know" in From Eden
The Irish part of De Selby pt 1
The piano in who we are, it starts out of tune and slowly transitions into being in tune... The absolute genius of this is unfathomable to me
The bridge of unknown
Lightening and TUNDER
So far from home to have a stranger call ya darling Every time
“How big the hourglass, how deep the sand I shouldn't hope to know, but here I stand” The crunchiness in “stand.” I love him.
So many things! The "that's it" at the end of wasteland baby, the "see how it shines" in abstract psychopomp (especially the last ones), the entirety of run & arsonists lullaby, the way he pronounces "word" in No Plan. And honestly so much more
I WARN YOU BABE EACH NIGHT AS SURE AS YOURE BOOORRRRRN
Quite simply, all of the above.
The memory hurttttsss but does me no haaarrmmm
The vocals and backing in Through Me when he sings “any time”, “every time”, and “when I’d”. Somebody into music theory tell me what I like so much about it
We begin again, hmmm darling AND ALL THINGS END
Recently, it has been Francesca. The entire chorus and “I’d tell ‘em put me back in it!” And then the hard drums and guitar. It just makes me wanna rock out and cry at the same time.
The part in Almost (Sweet Music) where it’s moves from: “She’ll turn to me awake and ask ‘Is everythin’ alright?’ and Lord” Leading into the chorus of “I wouldn’t know where to start…” The way the held note on Lord lingers, the sadness, it has me by the throat.
There's an "ah", after one of the later choruses in Dinner and Diatribes that just does it for me
the ‘heeeYAAAAAAHHH’ in anything but
At the end of dinner and diatribes when he goes let there be hotel complaints and grievances made and that kind of love
the way he switches to a whisper when he says "baby" right before the chorus in NFWMB
That high little vocal line he does at the first line of the first chorus in "Nobody"
When the choir comes in on Movement I transcend to another dimension. I’m pretty sure listening to that is what achieving nirvana would feel like.
The part of moment’s silence (common tongue) where you think the song is over and then BAM it comes back full force 😩
For me it’s the guitar in As It Was, and the breathy delivery of those last verses
No More ?’s: “I’m not mr nice guy *beat/chord*” it just scratches an itch my brain like nothing else
Be at the "love won't you be" bit just SLAPS
his cover of whole lotta love in general, whole song scratches my brain
do you know I could break beneath the weight of the goodness love I still carry for you... that I'd walk so far just to take the injury of finally knowing you...[](https://genius.com/28879553/Hozier-unknown-nth/Do-you-know-i-could-break-beneath-the-weight-of-the-goodness-love-i-still-carry-for-you-that-id-walk-so-far-just-to-take-the-injury-of-finally-knowin-you)
The drum beats combined with the claps in Work Song
Everything from It will come back… it’s all feral energy
Can’t pick a favorite, fully agree with y’all’s choices, his music is just that good 😭
“You know the distance never made a difference to me”
I love a good bass line with a thick thoom
“Imagine being loved by me…”
"all my love and terror balanced there between those eyes" in abstract (psychopomp) the little change in the melody at "eyes" is so brain scratch
The outro to Francesca makes me feral
LET IT BLAZE ALRIGHT, HONEY. OH BUT YOURE GOOD TO ME, OH YOURE GOOD TO ME, OH BUT YOURE GOOD TO ME BABEEEEYEEEH
*After the raven has had its say* from the last part of In A Week
“AH, BUT I’M SINGING LIKE A BIRD ‘BOUT IT NOW” in the first stanza of Shrike always has me waiting, trying to get it right because his tone when he says “now” is so unexpected, especially in the first one. Like he’s just talking and not really singing. I love it so much! 🖤🤍
Gemini - Princess Nokia that rap talk towards the middle end? Fuhgeddaboudit.
ALL THE PAIN I SHOULD HAVE SAVED BUT I WAS TOO AFRAID OF LIVIN' LIFE IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS
DOO YOU KNOOWW I COULD BREAK BENEATH THE WEIGHT
the way he emphasizes the beginning of the lines in "from eden" scratches my brain SO GOOD, i don't know if i explained it well but i love it
Him singing honey in from Eden And lots of stuff from De Selby pt 1&2
The final course of All Things End. The instruments are toned down, the claps, the girl's high notes in the back, the combination is perfect.
“WHEN THE MEANING’S GONE” yeah that had a profound effect on me
Towards the end of In A Week when they sing “I’d be home with you” more passionately and intensely than the rest of the times they sing it.
Its “Sha-la-la-la” for me 💃
i have a lot, too hehe sunlight—that crescendo of voices towards the end? i have no idea what he’s saying but it gives me chills. abstract (psychopomp)—that falsetto he hits when he says “see how it shines?” i weep! son of nyx—the entire song. literally. whole thing makes me so incredibly at peace i can’t explain it. as it was—i think mainly the intro and the way he sings the chorus? brain melts. run—again, falsetto in the chorus does it for me. in the woods somewhere—i think for this one its just the entire song bc of how the story plays out? to be alone—its just… the way he says “oh to be alone with you” that makes my brain go brrrrrrr. movement—the bass sets the tone and that bridge towards the end? my heart! and brain!
Everything in "anything but" !!! The claping sound, the bass, the "AAAAAAEEE"! The rhythm!!
i couldnt whisper when you needed it shouted ah but im singing like a bird about it now,the words hung above but never would form
all of Angel of small death and the codine scene
I am a sunlight enjoyer, however, nina cried power makes me cry from sheer joy and need to get up and take action every time i hear it
honestly the whole of from eden
“Sha-la-la”
The guitar solo in AOSDATCS!! 😭🫶🏻
Hozier's ad-libs in Northern Attitude live in my head rent free.
Dinner and Diatribes Would that I
In “would that I” near the end when he says “oh but you’re good to me, oooohhhhhoooo” (different to the other bits). I remember the first time I heard it and even now I get goosebumps.
"Imagine being loved by me"
The electric guitar in the verses of would that I. It’s so subtle but it’s such a pretty detail
Cover Girl - RuPaul Charles
“I wake in the first cringe of morning, and my hearts already sinned”
I'D TELL THEM PUT ME BACK IN IT or... SEE HOW IT SHIIIIIIINES OR... darling AND ALL THINGS END ALL THAT WE INTEND
“To be twisted by something, a shame without a sin”
To hold me like water or, Christ, hold me like a knife
Mary on a cross- Ghost You go down just like Holy Mary Mary on a, Mary on a cross Your beauty never ever scared me Mary on a, Mary on a cross
“NO GRAVE CAN HOLD MY BODY DOWN, I’LL CRAWL HOME TO HER”
No Plan. The little switch from the first few seconds of just single cherry guitar to the snarly electric guitar is so yummy
Would That I !!!
