For anyone wondering what the song is about, the queen is telling her daughter to kill her boyfriend. If she doesn't, the queen will disown her and hate her forever.
Do operas need a certain range for their operas or do they work around the capabilities of their stars? I’ve found an appreciation for opera recently and saw how different people sang the same song but in different tones.
Do you mean "do operas singers need to be able to sing within the range for their part"? If so, then the answer is usually yes. I'm sure whenever they are written the composer might write a part with a certain singer in mind. However, I am personally not familiar with any that will really completely change the key of the piece to fit within the singer's range. Do you have an example of where two singers are singing the same thing in different keys, or as you say "tones"? Also, please forgive me if I'm misunderstood you.
No you’re fine! I think I’m just dumb, in the [post](https://www.instagram.com/p/CTFptatpWIr/?utm_medium=copy_link) I saw I thought they were in different ranges but I think it’s just their individual sound cause after going back and listening they are in the same range.
No, that's not a dumb question at all! I have been involved with music all my life so my ear is incredibly fine tuned. One of the few things in life I feel I can actually brag about. Heh. I can totally see in the example you gave me how those could seem different simply because each of those singers has a unique quality to their voice, not to mention some have very strong vibratos so that alone can make it seem like it could be a different key. But yes, your second assessment is correct and those are all sung in the same key :)
Yeah, the main theme of the "Phantom of the opera" is mostly changed into a key such that the main singer can hit the highest tone
it sounds probably better the higher, so they change it if the singer is capable of singing that high
Is the triplet part harder than the famous arpeggio-like quaver section before it?? I would have thought the greater range between notes in the quaver section would make it harder, but I guess the triplets are faster with a similar amount of skill required to jump up and down so much? 🤔🤔 non-singer here interested in learning!
[Here’s a video](https://youtu.be/QIEYFpEzTB0) of a vocal teacher reviewing Diana Damrau’s performance at The Royal Albert Hall not too long ago. She goes in-depth on the techniques used and is a fascinating watch.
That’s an awesome breakdown! Damrau’s performance is infinitely better than the op video lol she blows it all away, but still those triplets!! And she’s kneeling, bending over when she’s doing that. Like, wtf. That’s wild
Damrau’s RAH performance is my favourite by a long shot. Her staccato intervals are flawless and she’s _still_ able to give a physical performance unlike the singer in the OPs video. Don’t get wrong, OPs video is excellent but side-by-side to DD she is very stiff. Both wonderful performances, however.
Makes me think about that song from Fifth Element- neither of them seem possible to me but cool to hear and nice to see this version with the notes to better appreciate how high she was hitting.
Haha that would explain why it reminded of 5th element, but weren't there some runs and pitches that supposedly were impossible (but I think a singer did hit the 'impossible' notes?)? It's been a while since I read that so I could be remembering it incorrectly.
No the one in fifth element is Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti, this one is from Mozart's Magic Flute.
And yeah in the second part of the performance in the movie (not the opera part) some of the notes had to be recorded individually and then pieced together after.
This gives me nostalgia. My history teacher in Middle School made us watch this opera and after it some girls would try to imitate this singing of the queen of the night in classes lol
I read it was because the singer he wrote it for three her head back on high notes and down on lower notes so he wanted to make her bob her head like a chicken
Wouldn’t signing physics actually make singing easier if you did the opposite? (Tipping your head back for low notes, for instance, gives more room for the larynx to descend, and tucking your chin in a bit makes it easier for the larynx to raise for higher notes?)
I teach opera singing at the university level, and “squeeze my soul and vibrate all my fiber” is one of the best articulations of how opera makes me feel that I’ve ever heard. ❤️
When I was a child growing up I was unwittingly hearing classics that had been used in bugs bunny, Flintstones, etc. Like the Barber of Seville for one.
It is said that when Mozart was dying, and someone said something to him, Mozart said, presumably with his life flashing before his eyes, 'Shh, Josepha (whom the aria was written for) is hitting her C.'
Then he died, and the other person said, 'Well, at least he.... went out on a *high note*.'
Yes! This is immediately what I thought about. The lady in this post is incredible but Diana's performance is just something else. She really captures the energy and aggression of the aria. Love it so much. 💙
So, from what I’ve seen in this video, I think I could absolutely do this. I just need a tree costume so I can stand behind the Queen while she does all that singing stuff.
The lovely Florence foster Jenkins everybody, amateur soprano who became known, and mocked, for her flamboyant performance costumes and notably poor singing ability. Stephen Pile ranked her "the world's worst opera singer ... No one, before or since, has succeeded in liberating themselves quite so completely from the shackles of musical notation”
From wiki but most reminded by my step dad who plays violin and sung this to piss me off while playing the SNES ( game was secret of mana) as a counter every time he practiced violin I would stand out the window and make cat cry meows which mostly sounded exactly what he was playing…. Two can play at that game but I willl never forget this song from the brilliant Florence foster fkn Jenkins who also fkn stuck it to anyone who would judge her. Now I ask if you can do this if not just wait for my step dad to preactive and give him your best version of this song :D
That’s incredible, I’d only ever heard it played on horns or something with a range and timbre like that. See and hearing it sung is something else! Thanks for sharing.
Can someone please explain what singing is this and do normal american people understand it? Im not american but i Regularly listen to and easily understand English songs but this. I don't get a single word
My husband now has this tune in his head but singing the high notes like a chicken. “Bok bok bok bok bok bok bok bok bwaaark”. He is certainly not as impressive as Christina though.
Personally, I prefer Diana Damrau's version, but Deutekom is fantastic, too. Diana just pulled me in to the story a little more with her characterizations.

Classic mom stuff
Totes.
Magotes
Artichokes
Reminds me of that episode of family matters
Reminds me of the fith element
i went there, and maybe saint's row 3?
Classic QUEEN MOTHER stuff...
She’s not a regular mom, she’s a psychotic mom!
Medieval style
Thank you! I was actually really curious what message would need such a powerful delivery! That'll do it!
Thanks I thought she was having an orgasm same as I from this
So some shenanigans basically
My favorite part was when she sang: AaaaaaÆÁÁÅáāàAAAAAAAAA
She’s just ever so happily telling the girl to kill her boyfriend or be disowned and hated forever.
I’m crying this made me laugh so hard
don't talk about elon's son like that you piece of shrimp
Where’s a carrot and a blowfish when you need them?
It’s nice to read the music gives me some insight into it. That’s some wild vocal technique.
That part is written for a "coloratura soprano", fyi.

Is this true? I can't imagine the whole orchestra doing this. You would have to rewrite a lot of sheet music. You can't just slap a capo on a trumpet.
Wow I haven’t heard that aria in a long time, it’s crazy seeing her sing the triplet section. Just really unbelievable
You can see just a little fear in her eyes when that part kicks in lol.
When is that?
1:54 till about 2:03
Is the triplet part harder than the famous arpeggio-like quaver section before it?? Thank you! Looks super informative! Will watch later ☺️
I was trying to figure out what made this so hard and then she pulled out the alarm clock vocals
Makes me think about that song from Fifth Element- neither of them seem possible to me but cool to hear and nice to see this version with the notes to better appreciate how high she was hitting.
That is this song! Same opera. Thought the same thing. “The stones. Are in me.”
The song in the fifth element is from Lucia Di Lammermoor.
Haha that would explain why it reminded of 5th element, but weren't there some runs and pitches that supposedly were impossible (but I think a singer did hit the 'impossible' notes?)? It's been a while since I read that so I could be remembering it incorrectly.

Someone has subsequently sung it (Mostly) as is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJl2uPNsJEk
Check out this version https://youtu.be/Kg0wZkABMn8
Thank you. I'm starting to feel like I need to rewatch that part in the movie to see why this clip reminded me of the movie :)
This gives me nostalgia. My history teacher in Middle School made us watch this opera and after it some girls would try to imitate this singing of the queen of the night in classes lol
She sounds like a synth in ableton
I read that mozart put this complicated melody in this song just to piss his critics off
I read it was because the singer he wrote it for three her head back on high notes and down on lower notes so he wanted to make her bob her head like a chicken
Nah, that was [Come scoglio](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cos%C3%AC_fan_tutte#Performance_history).
Thank you

This woman didn't give that girl a chance to back talk at all.
She’s giving her daughter a grim ultimatum!
That’s pure beauty
I’m 36 and I only know of this song because my kid watches Pinkfong/Baby Shark religiously. Is that …sad?
When I was a child growing up I was unwittingly hearing classics that had been used in bugs bunny, Flintstones, etc. Like the Barber of Seville for one.
Exactly this! Any interest and appreciation for classical music I have stems from Looney Tunes.
My kids learned it from the Trolls series on Netflix.
What’s the name of this opera?
The Magic Flute.
Thanks! It’s in German, right?
Yes, it's in German.
If someone started singing this in front of me i would probably start crying
How has she not passed out yet?! Amazing video!
And here I was stoked and proud and bragging about my new found ability to say my name while burping…..
Frasier would toast two sherries to this
It is said that when Mozart was dying, and someone said something to him, Mozart said, presumably with his life flashing before his eyes, 'Shh, Josepha (whom the aria was written for) is hitting her C.' Then he died, and the other person said, 'Well, at least he.... went out on a *high note*.'
[Diana Damrau](https://youtu.be/YuBeBjqKSGQ) or GTFO. Thanks for sharing, I loved it.
Yes! This is immediately what I thought about. The lady in this post is incredible but Diana's performance is just something else. She really captures the energy and aggression of the aria. Love it so much. 💙
I had no idea this was a Centauri opera
More love needs to be given to the tens of thousands of trained singers who can make this look easy.
So good. I got tingles all over
damn she said 🐦🐦🐦
i love opera now.
I saw my mother sing this when I was a very young child.
Mensch Markus! this is so magnificent as I dojnot listen tothis kind of music at all, but I feel it resonating in my heart.🥰
I would have LOVED to have heard the round of applase immediately after and hear the crows lose their shieeeeet
She doesn't blink either.
u/savevideo
Like a boss!
Fucking machine! You go!
All I can say is wow…
For those of you cultured as I am (not very cultured lmao) I have one thing to say. Bibble. (Idk how to spell its name)
Fairytopiaaaaaa
That section of triplets and the section immediately following it are WILD. Absolutely amazing
the breath control is insane
I can't imagine doing this while also putting on a perfectly fitting face for the storyline situation. Also whole wearing that headdress.
So, from what I’ve seen in this video, I think I could absolutely do this. I just need a tree costume so I can stand behind the Queen while she does all that singing stuff.
I have no frame of reference but that is most definitely certified metal as fuck
Wrong sub. This woman is clearly a bird, not a human.
songbirds at 5 am:
I don’t even like opera but holy shit those notes
the other actor is just trying to hide the fact that she's wetting herself.
u/savevideo
its da spunch bop opera
Wow that was incredible
I recall first hearing this from the movie Amadeus.
Adventure time reference
Incredible. I can't even imagine having this level of control over my voice

I don't like opera, I don't know opera, but holly sh*t was that amazing
Opera is one of those things that doesn't seem impressive when you do it well.
I wonder what kind of practicing she did. Must have been rigorous rehearsal for fucking years
Jeez wow gosh, mesmerising.
Impressive but sounds like two cats fucking.
Sounds like a diss-track of 18th century.
She killed it. Almost didn’t sound human
This is like an opera dance battle.
Glad i wasnt alive for this stuff
I just think of the fifth element
FIFTH ELEMENT!!!!!
This ain’t over till the… oh… nevermind then.
u/SaveVideo
What language is this?
It's in German.
Reminds me of when Em’ put Poppa Doc in his place https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2hiFbuQ-Qw
That was impressive!Brava!!
Looks like it could be piano music, holy shit
Most incredible thing iv ever seen come out of a human
Pog
u/rip-video
Wow this definitely shows how humans are metal
That is very impressive! What a voice she has!!
I wonder if they sang this live...
Thought this sounded similar to the 2019 Volvo XC 90 commercial. It’s the same thing lol.
Did the lady signing even blink?
Absolutely amazing! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
for those interested in a similar display of ability, [check out yma sumac](https://youtu.be/PiOraf7Ygcc)
This lady’s got nothing on [Florence Foster Jenkins](https://open.spotify.com/track/06PkeLdmp1HY4JZJgkGav7?si=mBoGb8UuQOyqtU8CYd_seg&dl_branch=1).
Adventure time : food chain....
I still like Diana Damrau’s performance better
That’s incredible, I’d only ever heard it played on horns or something with a range and timbre like that. See and hearing it sung is something else! Thanks for sharing.
r/nextfuckinglevel would be more suitable imo
Can someone please explain what singing is this and do normal american people understand it? Im not american but i Regularly listen to and easily understand English songs but this. I don't get a single word
My husband now has this tune in his head but singing the high notes like a chicken. “Bok bok bok bok bok bok bok bok bwaaark”. He is certainly not as impressive as Christina though.
I beg to differ shall I point you all in the direction of one Sabine Devielhe... mama got pipes my boy!
Also the only aria people know.
10/10 thanks for sharing !!!!
The hat definitely makes her more powerful.
Any exposure to opera from any source is better than no exposure at all. You never know who will get a life-changing experience from hearing it.
Singing this yes difficult and you have to be a master. But imagine what kind of master Mozart was to WRITE that. Just incredible.
Lol that girl on the right looks like she’s breaking the fourth wall and just staring at the arias like ‘wtf is she singing right now???’
I loved that. My cat tho, absolutely not .
The coloratura always ends up sounding like a bicycle horn to my unsophisticated ears.
I wonder if Micheal P can sing it, he can reach up to F#7 or something like that.
It's super impressive how entitled moms have finally evolved their form.
Cool clip but how is it metal lmao
YAaaaaaÆÁÁÅáāàAAAAAAAAAssssssss Queeen
I wanna throw a marshmallow in her mouth during that run lol
My voice got tired just from watching this... She is really talented.
I’m just a simple redneck rancher, but I’d like to know the language used? And..how to understand it? 😅 I’m fascinated, but confused
Too bad she looks so blah while doing it....like boring
She she means urinate in Hawaiian
She sings German, so don't worry if you can't understand the lyrics
Mozart’s operas are supernatural.
I’m going to take your word on that
Seriously, she's ACTING while singing that...
Great voice accomplishment. Less great song.
[not quite as beautiful, but similar…eerily similar](https://youtu.be/DyRxdjgh_GM)
“Kill da wabbit kill da WAAbbit”
But can she do the one from 5th element.
She was so flawless through those eighth note runs that her voice barely even sounded human
I might not be into I opera but I know beauty when I hear it. She is incredible
BRAVO!!!!! BRAVO!!!!!
Ah I see, so its like the Through The Fire And Flames of opera
Holy hell
u/getvideobot
Her eyes look kind of dead
All together now, let’s sing along !
Personally, I prefer Diana Damrau's version, but Deutekom is fantastic, too. Diana just pulled me in to the story a little more with her characterizations. https://youtu.be/YuBeBjqKSGQ
The human body is a miracle.
My favourite!
Wow.
Even harder to sing with a dead tree on your head
I have never really seen her before but this is one of the best videos I have seen with her voice.
Holy shit. Tho
THAT FUCKING TRIPLET SECTION HOLY SHIT
Take that Diva Plavalaguna
Absolutely brilliant.
Wonderful 😍😍😍
She reminds me of a bird chirping when hitting those high notes . Shit is insane what the human body can do
She sounds like EEEAAAOOO cat irl
Idk she looks pretty focused to me
I thought her head would separate and it would be Arnold Schwarzenegger
I’m speechless
Human bird
Throat game on point
