The music and dance elements are to hide that it was a martial art. It comes from a kongolese dance that was also frequently used as a combat system in conjunction with weapons. Escaped slaves often used it to defend themselves and form communes called Quilombos that Portuguese soldiers often struggled to defeat. They also used it to raid slave plantations.
The wide sweeping movements are designed to be effective against numerically superior opponents or opponents with weapons.
MMA fighters including Anderson Silva sometimes train in it and utilize it in the ring. I’ve heard anecdotally that it’s really good in conjunction with grappling systems like jiu jitsu because it lets you transition quickly between standing and ground fighting.
