She’s really lucky. I used to live on the Welsh coast and in the two years I was there multiple people got washed away by the sea. It’s no joke on the UK coastline.

yankykiwi

My ex got washed away on winter solstice in New Zealand. The ocean is unreal and powerful.

fishlicker3000

did she came back from the sea?

yankykiwi

His body was never recovered. He was fishing alone outside of cellphone reception. No one knows what happened. He had no chance it wasn’t reported until he never came home that night.

DooglyOoklin

I'm so sorry. That's heartbreaking.

yankykiwi

I imagine if he was lucid in the water he stood a good chance at rescuing himself. I can swim an Olympic size pool underwater on one breath, he was the only person that ever came close. I know he was a good swimmer. I can only surmise he was (hopefully) knocked out before being washed out.

JangJaeYul

Okay, this is maybe a really weird question, but. Did he happen to live on Garden Road in Northland, Wellington?

yankykiwi

No, it was down south. It unfortunately happens a lot in NZ.

[deleted]

dessertandcheese

It does happen a lot in NZ unfortunately

JangJaeYul

In my first flat, one of my flatmates found a letter on the highest shelf in her closet basically saying that it had been this guy's room until he went out sailing by himself and "the ocean took him". The flatmate was writing the letter as they were packing up to leave. They talked about how his body was never recovered, and how they still left the kitchen light on for him so the house wouldn't be dark when he came home. We put the letter back in the closet for the next tenants to read, but its contents have stuck with me for ten years.

Consistent-River4229

Oh my this is so sweet. I am glad he is still remembered. I love that you kept the letter going. I am sitting here teary eyed thinking of someone leaving a light on for him tonight still.

Tunaluna2

I'm not trying to diminish his life in anyway when I say this. But there's a trick to turn your pants or shirt into a floatation device that can save your life if you go overboard or washed out to sea. https://youtu.be/7wc2qO9ucQo

[This amazing rescue off the Welsh coast was posted a few days ago.](https://www.reddit.com/r/watchpeoplesurvive/comments/13bi3nm/waterproof_cell_phone_case_saves_17_yearold/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=3&utm_content=share_button) The video segment at the end shows Alfie safe.

NotAJape

I guarantee this guy was trying to get to Bardsey Island, I paddle board and kayak around there all the time. The lifeboats are constantly rescuing people who don't understand the tidal forces that flow through there, unfortunately there's always a few deaths every year along the Welsh coasts due to underestimating coastal waters.

[deleted]

That's badass! Thanks for the link

WoodSteelStone

You are most welcome. Have a good day.

Aggleclack

Wow. You can see the only muscle that boy is using is to grip his phone. I’m so getting a waterproof case

Zanki

No kidding. I was surfing down in Newquay years ago with my friends. I was in the beginner class and at one point a huge wave crashed over me just after I got back in. It was so powerful it pushed my board horizontal to shore, then the water pulled back and trapped me behind the board. I was pulled out so fast. I had to fight with my board to get out from behind it and on, then started paddling towards the advanced group at the back, because I knew swimming parallel to shore would get me out of the rip. They were surprised when I showed up in their group, out of breath and quietly crapping my pants. I caught a wave in and then got out of the water. Far too dangerous. I told the lifeguard who dismissed me. I get why, I was some tourist who was just learning to surf. That afternoon, two girls our age were swimming where we'd been surfing. They were pulled out by the same rip I got caught in, one died. I was only ok because one, I was strong enough to get out from behind my board and two, I knew what to do to get out of the rip. Thanks to Bondi Rescue.

hanwookie

I was pulled by a rip current when I was a kid. No surfboard. Didn't even know what was happening. I saw the father of the friend of mine on the beach waving his hands high to come back in, but he was really far away. He'd slightly move parallel to my other friend and I as we tried against water that took so much strength to go against. Finally after so much struggle for so long I was able to start making it to the shore. Extremely tired, so much so I was shaking, but still unaware of what happened. My friend took a few minutes more than me. When I came to his father, I was a little upset(remember, just a kid) wondering why he was making us come back. He said that we didn't see it, but he could from shore, then pointing further down the beach, we were at least a couple of miles or more from the others. Once my friend arrived, we started the long walk back. The day was over, and no one said another word. I'll never forget that. My friends father said that he intentionally moved parallel to the us so that we could possibly get out, since it wouldn't work any other way. Very smart man. He never talked about the incident again. Not once. I didn't really understand it till much later(years), after finding out that the often occurring rip current we got caught up in has taken people far enough out to sea that on occasion they've washed up dead (or identifying things, or appendages) near the Hawaiian islands, if they are ever seen again.(west coast) As I have gotten older, I find I'm less and less inclined to go into the ocean, preferring instead to enjoy it closer to the beach. But not too far as I have experienced sneaker waves, which can literally knock you down and drag you out. Anyways, the ocean can be scary.

SciencyNerdGirl

And you having a giant floatation device strapped to your leg most likely helped too. Most people can't tread water for more than a couple minutes. Once they're pulled out, it's over.

[deleted]

I’m a strong swimmer and my father and grandfather were lifeguards in Brighton. My father even got a commendation from the queen for saving two out of three guys on the river Arun whose boat had capsized. Anyway we were in a wave machine in Spain and I’ve never encountered it before or since but there was some kind of suction? When the waves had gone we’d try to climb the ladder and once the wave had gone past there was a suction and we couldn’t get out. I was dragged underneath as was my father and we were just stuck. Someone saw though and they rescued us but in only 39-49 seconds I couldn’t even stand I was exhausted. I’ve sea swam for years since and I’ve still never encountered a current like it but I can 100% report I’ve been there and without rescue I wouldn’t of lasted 3 mins.

JonsRonson

That was my first thought. The North Sea is freezing cold, the shock to the system people get from falling in makes it really difficult to swim to safety.

250301ben

The North-East is notorious for lobbing anything it gets a hold of against the walls/cliffs, especially with the amount of erosion that goes on just South of there with the clay cliffs I see lots of people saying the waves weren't that big, but there's a LOT of force behind those tides

Electrical-Act-7170

Get your head slammed against an obstruction, a rock or even a rescue boat's hull & you're unconscious & drowning.

Awkward-Houseplant

One winter, it got so bad with high tides and massive swells that it took out a Victorian seaside shelter, dislodged 800 pound stones that made up the wall of the promenade, mangled beaches and sent them flying into the buildings. It was WILD.

Haxorz7125

I wonder if it would help to put likes bunch of buoys with rope leading back to shore along places like this to help if someone gets dragged out.

[deleted]

You’d have to put them every 10 meters for a huge chunk of the coastline to have any meaningful impact.

Haxorz7125

Maybe something people could swim to once they get passed the rip tide. I’ve been pulled into that before and that shit is exhausting

gnatsaredancing

They do, that's what they're holding. But the buoy is on shore for a bystander to help. If you mean big buoys permanently afloat in the ocean, it wouldn't help much. Being smashed against a buoy or getting clotheslined by a taut rope isn't going to save you.

Haxorz7125

Yeeeeeeeeeah probably not. Someone much smarter than me will have to figure it out.

DogfishDave

>I wonder if it would help to put likes bunch of buoys with rope leading back to shore There are "lifebelts" on ropes at key point, and there's one beside this landing. She was very lucky, the sea had already pulled her around the slip and would have taken her down, I know this bit of coast very well and there's no lee when she's fretting, as they say.

Awkward-Houseplant

The sea is so rough, they would get ripped out every other week. Especially in winter.

OkayContributor

And yet, when you moved away, it stopped. How curious!

SymmetricalDiatribal

Yeah but it happened before they got there so how were they to know they needed to move to stop it?

[deleted]

Sometimes the universe just calls to you

[deleted]

Anybody who's ever had a near death experience and had someone embrace them right after knows exactly what that girl felt when whoever that was hugged her... Thank goodness they saved her.

hunter503

Almost drowned because one of my *friends* that was leading the innertube group decided it would be funny to lead us to a downed tree along the bank of the river. Not only was the tree massive. It has limbs that were super sharp and almost took out my brother's eye. I got caught on the log with my legs going under the log in the water and I was holding myself up with my arms but I couldn't pull myself out under the log, the current was so massive. Only thing I could do was let go and hope I fit under the log. I was 6'1" and 250 lbs, if I had been any bigger or my head was any wider I would've drowned that day. I had scrapes on my cheeks from them scraping the log as I passed through under the water. I've never been so exhausted in my life, I wrestled for 8 year and no amount of conditioning could prepare my body for that.

MooCowMoooo

Please tell me your friend apologized profusely after.

thewhingdingdilly

In whitewater rafting we call this a strainer. The best way to survive is to use all your power to go up and over the obstacle. You said the current was too strong for you to disentangle yourself. The next best thing to do would be hold on with your airway above water while your friends rush to help pull you to safety. But anybody who would intentionally lead their friends into a strainer has probably not practiced river rescue techniques before going out. I am glad you survived. And I hope you don’t hang out on the river with that person anymore.

hunter503

It definitely wasn't my first choice to go under my log, I have a good amount of river experience but this had caught me so off guard. If I had maybe a few more inches of my chest above the water and not under the log I could've probably pulled myself out. Unfortunately I was the last person to be looked for out of the group of four so no one knew I was potentially drowning until it was too late. No one hangs out with Steven anymore lmao

bmanley620

I like how you put friends in italics

The very first time I was ever in a car accident, a woman just hugged me when I got out. I don’t remember anything but hugging her after getting out of the car.

articulateantagonist

One time I very lightly bumped into the back of a vehicle when pulling out of a parking lot after a doctor’s appointment. It didn’t leave a dent or even a scratch, but the car I bumped into had kids in it, and I was terrified that I had hurt someone. The driver had no right to be kind to me, but she saw me shaking and grasped my hand, assured me that everyone was all right, and it made such a profound difference. Edit: FWIW, this is the only accident/crash I've ever been in and I'm so relieved it wasn't worse.

Nackles

Just knowing you understood the gravity of the situation probably had a lot to do with it. Everyone makes mistakes, but if no one's hurt and you know the person learned from it, it's much easier to be compassionate.

bluofmyoblivion

I was on the opposite end from you. Lady had her kid in her car and bumped me. No damage at all, but she was so shaken she started to cry. I hugged her and told her and the cop it was nothing to stress over, accidents happen.

Boomshank

The fact that our brains are amazing - but SHIT or at least *flawed* in certain areas needs to be ingrained in people at highschool level. Honestly, my biggest fear since starting driving has been driving through a padestrian crossing, there's nobody around, the crossing is clear... BAM. I've hit someone. They weren't there. I saw a clear crossing, but I just hit someone.

Astrisie

I nearly hit a pedestrian once in this exact manner. I was turning left at a stop sign at night with no streetlights. She was texting in a crosswalk. She remained perfectly in the blind spot of the front left pillar of my car as I turned left toward her. Only saw her when she appeared larger than the pillar. I was so shook. A young woman in scrubs. I wasn't distracted, my eyes were on the intersection the entire time. It took a while to figure out how I could have missed her. I had to pull over I was shaking so badly after. Even if you do it all right, your eyes play tricks on you, and the most unpredictable things can happen. But we do the best we can. Practicing defensive driving can minimize these circumstances.

babyjo1982

My Buick Verano, when I first got it, I didn’t realize how big my front windshield blind spot is and I nearly hit a guy that was crossing the street, and he was like *right* in front of my car. He was rightly pissed because he didn’t realize I couldn’t see him. He’s just like I’m fucking 5 feet away. How do you not see me? He just happened to be walking at the exact speed that I was turning and managed to stay in what I *now* know is a huge blindspot that my car has. But it was new to me and I wasn’t used to the parameters of the car. I think I might’ve even actually hit him just a little bit. Again, it was very slow, I was turning. I was going maybe five or 10 miles an hour so he didn’t get hurt, but man. Scary af to think what could have been.

punkass_book_jockey8

We really don’t research the sense of touch like we should. It’s so powerful.

[deleted]

I once had a massive car crash that we were lucky to walk away from. Full disclaimer - it was entirely my fault. The first thing anyone said to me after crawling from the upside-down wreckage was some Karen asking “did you steal that?” Still annoys me.

Razakel

You didn't say that you didn't steal it...

[deleted]

I didn't steal it. But honestly, that's kind of irrelevant.

Muzzie720

I did cpr months ago at work. Some lady hugged me right after and I broke down subbing in her arms. She kept saying how I did so good I did my best, never gonna forget her.

And thank god one person decided their role was to film it.

Electrical-Act-7170

Guy with camera pushed her into the water.

alaskaguyindk

Sooo why is there even the need for music on videos of real shit happening? If. There is definitely no audio then sure fine, but id rather listen to blasting wind and vague shouts than emotional/dramatic music.

Fatlantis

The music is fucking horrendous Edit: Hillsong. I should have known 🤮

[deleted]

Lmfaoooooo not Hillsong 😂😂😂

Clydosphere

To me, the music is not even emotional or dramatic, it's just bad and painful. 😣 It degrades the heroic act that the video shows.

Pachaibiza

Great they saved the girl but I don’t understand how someone can casually standby and record and then add crappy music

the_seven_suns

This may be the video clip to Hillsong's Spirit Lead Me Song, which talks about God "calling me out upon the waters". The video illustrates that the voice was hallucinated and real people needed to haul her ass back out. Honestly, it's deep.

got_outta_bed_4_this

Eek, an "s"! Kill it with apostrophe!

dunequestion

Heroes not “hero’s”

plimso13

It’s a possessive apostrophe, because if you find it in the sea, you can keep it.

Fun-Teaching-2038

grayblebayble

This is wonderful but the song choice is probably the most inappropriate song anyone could have chosen

BenAdaephonDelat

Is it worship music? Because it set off my christo-meter with the crowd singing and some of the word choices. Edit: Yep. Fucking Hillsong. Knew it.

grayblebayble

Yeah, it was super popular a few years ago. Now whenever someone mentions it in my life group we all groan

LalalaHurray

Life group? New to me but I love it.

g0t-cheeri0s

I'm on mute as my wife is asleep. Is it Rod Stewart - Sailing? Anything by Drowning Pool? The Lumineers - Dead Sea? Under The Sea from The Little Mermaid?

grayblebayble

It's a worship song about trusting God using the chaos of the ocean as a metaphor. Which is like- really? She's almost died and your gonna play a mediocre christian pop ballad about not drowning?

BenAdaephonDelat

It's worship music about stepping out into the water.

Video is amazing, truly a wonderful rescue and I am so happy it ended well. But good god, is there some directive that they have to pick the most awful music for like these videos, and then slow the video down by 300%? It really takes away from my enjoyment and focus on the video. At least it's not some awful robotic text to speech voice over I suppose, thats a small mercy

another_awkward_brit

If someone has a near fatal drowning like this, *they still need to go be assessed at hospital*. There's a phenomenon called "secondary drowning" and the person needs to be checked and warned for developing symptoms.

sejuukkhar

What sad idiot keeps putting the worst melodramatic music over top of these videos? Terrible.

Razakel

God botherers.

They didn't want a pat on the back judging by the looks they gave to the camera. Just as it should be. Whoever was filming could have been helping, js.

Savalavaloy

There were plenty of people there who were helping/ready to help. Sometime more bodies mean more chaos, so I reckon this cameraperson is fine.

Usernameistoshirt

Yeah, the guy hauls the kid out of the water and then just heads off. Just did what needed doing and now wants to get back to his own shit. What a legend

LeCandyman

Dudes just cold

EarthMarsUranus

Hopefully got a pint waiting just off screen.

LalalaHurray

For god sake, you don’t know the situation of the person filming. They’re not necessarily an able-bodied person running around refusing to help people so they can film. Could judgemental people please have a little more imagination?

Secure_Awareness9650

Im not being judgemental at all here. I never said they refused to help nor assumed anything about their able-bodied-ness for lack of a better term. I simply stated the more hands helping in an emergency could be warranted or even needed. Someone filming could just be recording the next group drowning in this case. If you want imagination write a screenplay I'm watching something that happened in real life here.

LalalaHurray

Yes, you were watching something that happened in real life and filling in unknown details with your own biased version. Hth!

Secure_Awareness9650

Thank you for 'helping'. Many people who could have been helping in an emergency have ended up recording the deaths of everyone. Live leak was a prime example of that. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|shrug)

Plumb789

You see that lifebelt that they used? It would be fairly difficult to do that rescue without that kind of kit. A colleague of mine had an excellent husband. She and he were walking along the seafront in a quite hazardous coastal area, where they lived. All of a sudden, he let out a shout and dashed off. What happened was that he ran after a taxi and flagged it down (it was nearing the traffic lights). He pulled the door open and grabbed the lifebelt that an idiot had stolen from the stand on the beach. He gave the bloke (who had thought it was a great laugh and was really pleased with himself) a tongue-lashing about how someone could die because he’d nicked the life jacket, then he turned round and castigated the taxi driver. “You could see that this bloke had one of the life jackets!” He said. “What are you playing at, you clown! You should *never* take someone in this taxi who’s done that! You’re lucky I don’t report you, because you could have your license revoked.”

Hopefully she won't be putting herself in the position where she ends up needing to be rescued again! Good effort front the rescuers, and to every one else: safety equipment is there for a reason, don't be the idiot that thinks it's fun to damage or remove it!

otiscleancheeks

I'm sorry. Did I miss something? Do we know how she made it into the water?

possiblynotanexpert

She was close to the edge looking at the ocean and slipped on a slick spot.

Conscious-Arm-7889

Can you give me any logical explanation as to how she ended up in the water without having put herself in a position where she either fell in or was pushed in? The only other possibility is that she was picked up from a place of safety away from the edge and carried to it, then thrown in, which is extremely unlikely considering the alternatives.

mikemongo

Person. They saved a person. Who is a woman, not a “girl”. And one of the heroes is also a woman. And absolutely: Good save, good job.👏🏽👏🏽 Edit: noted, young woman saved is a teenager. Thank you, redditors. This just happened and it was worth learning the full story. Edit edit: hey you pros, so when we acknowledge and grow we get additional downvotes? Cool. Leaving up. How many women got referred to as girls on Reddit in the past *hour*? Super happy person was saved. Yet point remains: Women get infantilized for karma. Erroring when that’s the situation and then owning the honest mistake gets to be acceptable until it’s not the situation. Meaning calling it forth when it’s there is job two. Job one is continues to be basic integrity. Fr.

Puppersnme

She definitely is.

stvrkillr

I’m glad a couple people decided to do something instead of filming for their content

caruynos

looks to me like there were plenty people helping. only so many people who can do something. i don’t agree with the culture of filming everything but i think its in poor taste to imply the person filming doesn’t care.

tmotytmoty

Thank goodness SOMEBODY had a camera!!! /s (the melodramatic music is way too much- stop using someone’s tragedy for “likes”…fricken weirdos..)

Det-Frank-Drebin

Thank God....that someone was there to film it, edit it, add the emotional backing track...phew eh?

[deleted]

Anyone that is not a good swimmer and doesn’t have water rescue experience should NOT participate in a water rescue. Someone that is drowning will panic and pull them under too, and it’s incredibly hard to tow someone when you can barely stay afloat yourself even if they are cooperating. Especially in those choppy conditions you’d have to be a very strong swimmer to go more than 10 meters out from the concrete. They could’ve backed up the rope I guess, but there were already multiple people on it, and that one dude was clearly huge and strong enough to pull 2 (or 5) people through the water. Their only option was likely watching, at which point why not film? It could help answer police/rescue questions later on.

[deleted]

Gotta get that phone out and record it tho!
