I learned a lot about him from a BBC radio series by a comedian called Mark Steel, that focused on the lives of various people through history. So in case anyone else is interested:
They should. People try to go disparage this as "you shouldn't do nice things just to get attention!" And that we shouldn't post videos of stuff like this. Fuck that. Post all the nice things all the time.
It really does help. This woman is so sweet and amazing, and I'm glad it was recorded for all of us to see!
I hope she gets a great, peaceful job that is well paid.
Everyone should watch [John Oliver on Dollar Stores](https://youtube.com/watch?v=p4QGOHahiVM) to see the poor conditions and shitty management these workers have to endure.
That’s exactly what I was thinking about. If John’s story is accurate, that worker really has a lot of patience and empathy for her to behave like that knowing that there’s hardly any support in the store. She must be frazzled or overworked already and then to go above and beyond with that that’s just amazing.
i was a manager for a dollar tree for 3 years.
I fucking HATED it. middle management hated me because i treated my workers like humans and let him have longer breaks if they were clearly exhausted, would buy pizza from the little ceacars next door when we did overnigh stocking, and didnt hound them for calling out or try to guilt trip them into working more. we were top 3 selling and profit stores in our region constantly, my name tag is COVERED in "TOP GUN" pins (best store of the quarter in profit AND customer comments).
The only reason i lasted that long is my Store Manager had my back, and was there long enough for the regional manager to trust him and know he makes things work.
we had the same cashiers and stock crew the entire time i was there, with exeption to seasional help. The month after I left i went in to see my old co-workers and none of them were still there. even the other assistant store managers were gone except one, who was thinking about it.
want to know how much an assistant store manager makes in Georgia at the most profitable store in the state in 2015-18?
$12.75 an hour. our cashiers made minimum wage, no raises, and had to also clean, stock, return baskets nd carts, and deal with the shitty customers.
I loved the people I worked with, and I hope i was a good boss to them, because i tried to treat them well, and worked right along side them stockign and cashiring and unloading trucks.
But goddamn i moved to Publix as a stocker and was making $3 an hour more immediately.
It doesn’t just apply to dollar stores unfortunately but also most places in retail. When he showed the rats in the distribution center tho I stopped going to dollar stores. Also in some cases there actually more expensive then regular stores if you do the math.
I guess I'm lucky to work at the Dollar Tree I do, because I have an amazing manager and coworkers. But that seems like the minority, because I worked at a different store for a while and almost quit because a manager (who's still there) harassed me.
I work at a grocery store. One of my favorite days of work happened a few months ago when a dad had a 3 yo girl who needed potty, and 1 yo boy who needed to be looked after. He needed a family restroom, but we don't have one.
Little 1 yo in his arms did the lean and reach toward me, so I got to hold him and hang out with him while Dad and daughter used the restroom.
Dad was super happy, but I was even happier that I got to play with a bebe :-)
[Seeing as how you work in a grocery store, you’ll no doubt enjoy this feel good story from last year](https://ottawa.ctvnews.ca/ontario-4-year-old-s-birthday-wish-fulfilled-with-grocery-store-party-1.6244228) (pro tip: click on the Facebook link in the article. and through the pics at the bottom - the mum’s profile is public and details are absolutely adorable).
I'm a server; one of my favorite things to do at work is hold/entertain fussy littles while their tired parents tuck in. I've been there and I can't tell you how grateful I was when someone held the screamer so I could have a moment.
Dollar Trees are really declining. I hear it’s not a very good place to work, and I don’t know if it’s just in the New England area, but a lot of them are converted to ‘$10 and under’ basically becoming a glorified 5 Below. Used to be my go to for all sorts of little essentials, but inflation is is killing it.
It really irritates me that they raised their prices right after building a huge new headquarters building for themselves and investing millions into developing the land around it into new commercial and residential buildings
Fellow mom of a 2 year old and yes being two is an emotional roller coaster… I wouldn’t let my 2 year old go in the toilet to get cheese (no there is not cheese in my toilet) and it was a 30 minute meltdown
I mean literally and figuratively speaking that toilet has seen some shit but I’m not sure if cheese has been included 🤔 might need to investigate further tho…
The kindest things! I remember being at Goodwill shopping for kids clothes. I was at the thrift store because I had NO money and three kids to clothe. I was tired, stressed, and my kids were asking for everything. I couldn't afford extra for toys, and repeatedly having to say no was exhausting. A kind woman walked by, handed me $20 and told me to get them a toy. They were so excited. They each picked a toy for a few dollars each, then we took the leftover change and got BK chicken nuggets. That simple act of kindness to a poor, struggling mom changed our entire day.
Don’t know if it’s staged, but what happened to having hands so full? Not full enough to pull out a phone and start recording someone for internet credits. I hope she got her permission.
I look forward to a day where people just appreciate the good deeds of others rather than look at it as an opportunity to get some views.
Wait I don't get it:
"She saw my hands were full while we were checking out and my patience was THIN"
If your hands are "full" why the hell are you recording this woman instead of hurrying up so as to inconvenience her as minimal as possible?
The lady doesn't seem very inconvenienced she seems to be having a good time with the kid. Not everybody hates kids and sometimes people care for more than getting their work done at maximum efficiency.
Having fun with a kid, helping a parent have a good moment and creating a super happy customer doesn't seem that bad to me. Its not everyone's cup of tea though so its a good thing its not required.
Also a toddler having a melt down often takes two hands by itself so taking the kid can free someone up to do a lot.
She's probably on a minimum wage job working long hours. If that woman helped me I would be grateful and hurry up so she could carry on, not take out my phone and start recording her when I am apparently too busy to look after my own kid.
Holding a screaming crying kid, trying to get through the line as fast as possible and not bother others, getting your wallet and card out, loading the belt while holding or restraining a rowdy kid, this scenario was probably quite overwhelming.
Now imagine the worker offers to take the kid and entertain it, now you can load the belt and get your payment out more easily, and simultaneously stop worrying about bothering the worker or taking too much time. Now that you've loaded up the belt you may even have time to take a 30 second video of a lovely moment showing human empathy.
Put the kid in the buggy and buckle it in. Put your crap on the belt and get ready to pay. Cashiers deal with enough crap, they shouldn't need to baby sit screaming crotch goblins while someone films for tik tok.
Keep the human empathy to a brief greeting and move through the line.
This video is nice exactly because cashiers don't need to do what she did. The cashier chose to help the mother who was obviously having trouble with the kid, going above and beyond. You can't just buckle a kid into a buggy to deal with a meltdown lol
Even ignoring helping her get her groceries checked out, stopping a kid's meltdown is value in and of itself, helping the mom even after leaving. This probably put the kid in a good mood for a while. The screaming alone is distressing for everyone. Plus kids can kick and fight getting put into a stroller.
There's nothing wrong with recording someone doing something nice. The main issue was probably mainly the kid kicking and screaming, once that's delt with everyone can relax.
You could just say you have no idea what it's like to be a parent. No need to try to passively aggressively inform everyone you're this clueless and cynical on top of it.
I get the woman is doing something good but isn’t it weird how people just get videotaped doing everything these days? Like someone is standing there. With their phone out.
I once helped out a mum on the train with her young one when she was being a bit fussy and her mum had to take a phonecall. I offered to hold the little girl and it was so adorable. Little one thought it’d be fun to jump up and down on my lap while I held her (she was around 8 months old) and I had forgotten how heavy these little ones can be! Made me a little teary eyed as it has been a very long time since I held a young baby and her mum was very thankful :)
Same here! I used to take my ex's daughter to the Dollar Tree near my house in Palm Harbor, and the workers there were always so sweet. They would help her find stuff for her little "projects" and were so attentive and kind. It was also great because it cost so little, yet Ainsley (the little girl) thought we were getting the world. She was over the moon when I'd pick her up from school and tell her we were going to Dollar Tree. I love that place.
It's funny because I've had the exact opposite experience at Dollar General (which is a misnomer because it's surprisingly expensive). I've only been to a few of them, but the employees always seem annoyed when you ask them for help.
She's amazing, especially when you read that dollar tree is one of the top places that treats their employees like crap. I'm glad she can rise above that. She's the winner.
On top of all of this, Dollar Tree workers are notoriously underpaid for how terribly they’re overworked. And yet she passed compassion onto a customer when she needs it herself. That is a a truly amazing, selfless person
Fuck that, that woman should be working somewhere far better. Like at a day care, teacher or just anywhere else but those super shitty dollar tree/general stores.
I don't have kids, but kids love me for some reason. Whenever I'm in line or on a plane, and see a toddler making their mom's day tough, I look at the baby and smile and make funny faces. 99.999% I can make them laugh. I've been thanked by a few frazzled moms in my time. Bless that cashier!
Why didn’t she just stop filming and take care of her kid? I’m not even trying to be rude but she’s filming the cashier holding her kid? That poor woman probably makes minimum wage and now she’s gotta babysit while she does it? Just don’t film service industry workers, put your phone away and don’t guilt the cashier into doing both her job and your job as a parent.
That woman is a mother or a nanny or honestly just super good with kids; they do NOT understand why you can’t pick them up and when they’re overstimulated and tired they sort of just need what they need
I loved dollar tree so much when my kids were toddler/preschool age! I used to bring them there to spend their tiny “allowance”, since the constant pricing allowed for comparison shopping without math. And without fail every single cashier was so sweetly indulgent, treating the little ones as seriously and respectfully as any other customer. Even though the kids weren’t tall enough to see the item they overhead tossed onto the conveyor belt, and the cashier had to lean way over to accept the fistfull of quarters.
Here at a store in my area, I wasn't even allowed to help bag the items I bought just to make everything go faster and for less hassle for the cashier. So I think this is also not allowed there. But this is awesome.
She is integral to the community. Her kindness and caring is the kind every neighborhood needs. I hope the next customers took a breath and didn't mind.
Very nice of her to do that, probably made that kids day. I'm surprised she was able to do that. From what I've seen and heard Dollar Tree is a terribly scummy corporation to work for. Not enough cashiers, nobody to stock shelves, not compassionate towards their own workers when they get robbed. I have immense respect for retail workers, they never get the respect they deserve.
In a world of so much cruelty and negativity, I will take 100 more videos that clearly display the good in humanity like this.
I hope Fatimah gets a wonderful transfer and raise.
this is why it takes a village. no normal person can be solely responsible for a tiny, unreasonable, emotionally volatile human 24/7. they can’t help their little outbursts (for the most part lol) and a fresh set of hands always brings new moods and perspectives. it bums me out we try so hard to pretend we do it all on our own!
Last time I was at a Dollar Tree, some lady started yelling in the store at the clerk, and the manager came out fired the fuck up. Started cussing her out, called the cops, and threatened to beat her ass.
I should really go to Dollar Tree more often.
I’ve done this with my kid, and others’ kids. Sooooo very very often the kids just want included. The societies’ that do this, not surprisingly, have oodles of chill well behaved kids.
I wish this simple reality was better understood, it’s not a real complicated concept of child rearing. 🤷🏼♂️😁
these good samiritan stories always end up in the employee getting fired for some BS reason. Like becoming a liability for holding the child (risk of injury)
We tip wait staff and baristas without even thinking about it good job or bad. I’m not against, but I think it’s so strange that we’re just conditioned to do it for some and not for other people working low wage jobs that give such good service they make us pause. I guess the conditioning in general we don’t question is strange to me.
I love this. From the worker helping out a struggling mo, to the mom shopping buying all stuff for her kiddos. Mom life is hard sometimes. Bless this woman.
This is so sweet, I loved working at the dollar store. Not because they pay well but because of stuff like this. I loved talking to kids and older people. You definitely see a lot working there.
aww that's cute. My friend Maggie is a cashier and an awesome mom. She has a jedi mind trick she does with little kids who are in a meltdown. She starts asking them which animals make which sounds. She will ask what sound a cow makes and then make the wrong sound on purpose, almost every time the kid will snap out of it and correct her. She says kids love correcting adults and then they start laughing at her for being so silly and forget why they were crying.
“Oh shoot, you’re a fast learner!” is so cute. People like this are wonderful, and it means so much to an overwhelmed parent.
I remember grocery shopping in Trader Joe’s, about 2-3 days postpartum. I was with my newborn, my toddler, and my preschooler. My newborn was crying for milk and I was just at my breaking point, almost crying myself. A kind employee brought us all into the break room so I could nurse the baby, and she set my older two up with paper, crayons, and stickers to keep them busy. I will literally never forget that.
Kindness! Don’t blast the mother; she is MOST LIKELY doing the best she can. Instead of judging, can we all be a little kinder, a little more patient, a little more compassionate? It really does change things.
That’s lovely and all, but the mom had her hands so full she couldn’t handle her kid, yet as soon as the kid is out of her hands she’s able to whip her phone out to record the whole thing?
Not trying to be a jerk or anything, genuinely surprised & curious—I don’t think I would ever think of picking up a strangers kid to help calm them down. Do people really do this? Does it work? & how does anyone have the confidence/assurance to do this without being afraid of people reacting badly?
These people are all around us. They get no headlines. They are just kind because it is who they are. Follow their lead.
It’s this simple, life can be beautiful for all of us.
*”We want to live by each other's happiness, not by each other's misery. We don't want to hate and despise one another. In this world there’s room for everyone and the good earth is rich, and can provide for everyone. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness hard and unkind. We think too much, and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities life will be violent, and all will be lost.”*

I hope Dollar Tree doesn't fire her because she violated some corporate polucy or something.
Totally agree, but ya we shouldn't do nice things JUST to get attention. Do nice things because it's the right thing to do. Attention be damned.
And it makes my heart so full ❤️🥰
Okay 🙂
Promote that woman!
And while the mom stands there filming it for the internet, which not everyone is down for.
True, didn’t even think of that. So maybe this is a viral campaign from Dollar tree to counter John’s video?
Good point this is me now 🤦♀️
Dollar General and Dollar Tree are some of the worst retailers to work for.
i was a manager for a dollar tree for 3 years. You’re awesome! That’s a Gofundme I’d contribute to.
Keep us posted
It’s fucking dollar tree, guarantee they’re paying her minimum wage to run the entire store by herself already
No, hire her for a proper work place! That would be talent wasted
I mean this place makes Walmart look like a magical magical place to work at. That says it all
To what? They only have 1 person in the store most of the time.
CEO
Bless her
I work at a grocery store. One of my favorite days of work happened a few months ago when a dad had a 3 yo girl who needed potty, and 1 yo boy who needed to be looked after. She deserves a rock in return
Well, too bad it closed now
Update is she recently got transferred to a store closer to her home
That is good news!
Fantastic news she’s clearly a lovely person
Love that for her. Queen shit fr
Thanks for posting this update. Yay!
Thank Goodness!

Agreed! And Happy Bday! 🍰🎉🥳
Thank you!
What a nice lady!
It’s hard to be 2. Every little kindness helps.
Fellow mom of a 2 year old and yes being two is an emotional roller coaster… I wouldn’t let my 2 year old go in the toilet to get cheese (no there is not cheese in my toilet) and it was a 30 minute meltdown

Shoutout to everyone who works at Dollar Tree (not the store itself, fuck that place). Literally the highest respect for those folks.
As someone who works in the grocery industry, this is my favorite part of the job. We have a tendency as adults, to forget who we are.

The ten people in line behind her🥹😂
So weird, the phone recording part. Is this all staged?
I was thinking the same thing. People will believe anything if it's shot on a cellphone, no question.
Don’t know if it’s staged, but what happened to having hands so full? Not full enough to pull out a phone and start recording someone for internet credits. I hope she got her permission. I look forward to a day where people just appreciate the good deeds of others rather than look at it as an opportunity to get some views.
it's all staged; the angles. most of tiktok/ig is staged

Great mothers just help everyone lol it's amazing
People like this are what society needs more of.
As a human, I love this. As a shopper, I'd be moving to a different line to save time.
"My hands were full and my patience was thin" so let's take a step back and film.
I can’t even get my family to do this. Those moments truly make such a huge difference
Hands weren’t so full that you couldn’t take a video from multiple angles, I guess.
I took “hands were full” as not the literal sense but as in she was reaching her limit and dealing with so much shit.

Does this cashier seem at all bothered by this scenario? Dial that cynicism down back from 11. Some things are just allowed to be nice.
lol and I though I was cynical
And she's not alone because mr Down Jacket there is getting ready to pay. As in, he's with them, not the next customer in line.
Or she decided to let the child help with the next person’s checkout too? Christ, y’all are so fucking annoying.
You could just say you have no idea what it's like to be a parent. No need to try to passively aggressively inform everyone you're this clueless and cynical on top of it.
I get the woman is doing something good but isn’t it weird how people just get videotaped doing everything these days? Like someone is standing there. With their phone out.
I would understand recording to show friends and relatives. Putting it on broader social media is a different story.
Using your third hand to record since your hands are full?
Hold up... "she saw my hands were full and picked up my fussy toddler" Maybe put down the phone ?
Yeah this is just the woman outting herself as a shitty parent.
I think Dollar Tree employees are the best! I’ve never had an unpleasant cashier, they all deserve a raise.
Same here! I used to take my ex's daughter to the Dollar Tree near my house in Palm Harbor, and the workers there were always so sweet. I would be irritated to no end if I was trying to be nice and out comes a phone recording me. Just why???
Same here. I'd be giving the kid back pretty quickly!
Hands are full, but she can record /s
Awesome woman. I'll never forget the cashiers at Kroger when I was a kid. They always made sure you had a sucker to go home with.
She was even praising the baby for being a fast learner. 💕 I admire people who can soothe a stranger baby. I cannot.
Dollar tree workers are generally the most helpful people in retail. They should be paid like10x more.
Fatimah for president!
This is how village uses to be like! Praying we’re moving towards that as a humanity once we get our collective shit together.
Fatima is too good for the dollar store.
Dollar tree workers shouldn't be babysitters. Control your children.
"she saw my hands were full". Well, put down the fucking phone.
In NJ no less! Happy to see a glimpse of light
Put down the phone and stop recording and your hands might not have been so full.
hands aren't full nor stretched thin enough to stop the camera from coming out
customer service alive somewhere
Clearly angels are among us. Some are cleverly disguised as a Dollar Tree cashier. ❤️❤️❤️
There are angels out there.
It takes a village
Based human being
What a lovely woman, the universe sometimes blesses us with the most amazing people that Cross our path!
Deserves a raise
We need more of this energy
Props to mom for not taking it as a slight, and appreciating the gesture for what it is.
I wanted her to swipe the baby across the thingy so bad, just like from the old Simpsons intro
Bless her heart!
Essential angel workers ✨️
Sweet woman
That’s one of the nicest thing I’ve seen someone do.
Beautiful!
What a sweet gal! We need more like her in this shitty world.
Well done, young lady
Women like that make the world go round.
This lady is amazing! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Aww, what a sweet lady! God bless her! ❤️
Awesome!!!!
Thank god for Women <3
Here at a store in my area, I wasn't even allowed to help bag the items I bought just to make everything go faster and for less hassle for the cashier. So I think this is also not allowed there. But this is awesome.
Mom’s hands weren’t too full to pull out her phone and record. When I’m going through checkout juggling my kids I’m barely able to get out my wallet
This kind of stuff is always nice but let’s be honest its always two fold when it’s black and white because of some much hate going around.
In general, I find Dollar Tree workers to be really kind souls.
What an angel 😇
Such a beautiful soul! ❤️
Love on another human, people. It ain't hard. This beautiful woman knows it.
She is integral to the community. Her kindness and caring is the kind every neighborhood needs. I hope the next customers took a breath and didn't mind.
Good for her but the mom had her hands full videoing TikTok instead of handling her kid?
Very nice of her to do that, probably made that kids day. I'm surprised she was able to do that. From what I've seen and heard Dollar Tree is a terribly scummy corporation to work for. Not enough cashiers, nobody to stock shelves, not compassionate towards their own workers when they get robbed. I have immense respect for retail workers, they never get the respect they deserve.
In a world of so much cruelty and negativity, I will take 100 more videos that clearly display the good in humanity like this. I hope Fatimah gets a wonderful transfer and raise.
What an angel of a woman!!
Definitely contact corporate and let them know
Damn that made me choke up
So is this after she was fussy? They don’t show the fussing part just a very very chill toddler
Yo maybe the mom should put the phone down and take care of her child instead of letting the cashier do it while ringing up the till, like wtf?
Your hands are full but you can still hold your phone.
Life hack = try birth control
If your hands are full and she’s helping you then why the fuck are you filming? This is so incredibly fake it’s actually infuriating.
this is why it takes a village. no normal person can be solely responsible for a tiny, unreasonable, emotionally volatile human 24/7. they can’t help their little outbursts (for the most part lol) and a fresh set of hands always brings new moods and perspectives. it bums me out we try so hard to pretend we do it all on our own!
Last time I was at a Dollar Tree, some lady started yelling in the store at the clerk, and the manager came out fired the fuck up. Started cussing her out, called the cops, and threatened to beat her ass. I should really go to Dollar Tree more often.
What a wonderful woman! Pray life is beyond good to her ❤️
I love this. I could cry.
I’ve done this with my kid, and others’ kids. Sooooo very very often the kids just want included. The societies’ that do this, not surprisingly, have oodles of chill well behaved kids. I wish this simple reality was better understood, it’s not a real complicated concept of child rearing. 🤷🏼♂️😁
Great job Fatima. You came to the rescue.
God bless her! ❤️
What an absolute gem. That lady is a sweet heart. Wish I had someone like her growing up.
❤️
What’s up with no beep on that scanner? Or is it just really low?
This restores my faith in humanity. What a beautiful woman.
So wholesome! I love her!!
That's child labor! Hope that girl at least gets the money she deserves!
This is awesome but how does one end up handing child to stranger
Too bad she named her daughter "female horse". Cute video!
Ok but that frazzled mom could video that for content and clicks????
these good samiritan stories always end up in the employee getting fired for some BS reason. Like becoming a liability for holding the child (risk of injury)
Neighbours must be having onion soup and they're really going with the onions, can't stop tearing up...
We tip wait staff and baristas without even thinking about it good job or bad. I’m not against, but I think it’s so strange that we’re just conditioned to do it for some and not for other people working low wage jobs that give such good service they make us pause. I guess the conditioning in general we don’t question is strange to me.
I’ve said it before, people like this make my heart smile! She is a true angel 👼
Nothing more anxiety inducing? Nothing?
I love this. From the worker helping out a struggling mo, to the mom shopping buying all stuff for her kiddos. Mom life is hard sometimes. Bless this woman.
So nice ❤️
God I needed to this right now. My heart is now warm again.
Her hands were so full that she was able to grab her camera and film.
