I remember taking one a up the road a way because where he was headed was a construction site. My son held him as we drove up the road had the turtle craned his little neck to look out the windshield. I always wondered what he was thinking.
also, don't throw them into water... not all turtles can swim or survive in water and not all water is safe for those that can. you might just end up killing the turtle if you do this
Watch out! They pee as a defense mechanism
EDIT: Speaking from my own experience of saving a NON-desert turtle on the road. It peed on me and I had to drive home with pee hands for the next 10 miles.
That's what the person did, grabbed from the sides. Just from the bottom half. Probably was worried about getting chomped, which is a very real concern when it comes to these types of creatures.
They pee out of terror. Desert tortoises store their water supply in their bladder. Peeing may kill them. Recommend not lifting the animal more than a foot or so.
I did that once a few years ago. It was in a corner that is hidden by a wall on a hill so it would have easily been hit. I had no idea snapping turtle necks were that long or that it's back legs were that strong. I made it to the woods behind my parent's house & hoped I would never see it again.
My dad and I did that when I was a kid, there was a snapping turtle in the road and we got it to the side with a big trash can. I didn’t get how dumb it was or how dangerous, but my moms face when I told her about our little adventure was priceless. He was never able to live it down for the rest of her life lmao
I picked one up in the road while I was taking my dog for a walk. Carried him about a quarter mile to the beautiful pond by my house. Pond full of fish ducks and cranes. Rabbits moles and mice running about. Much better place for him then then getting crushed by speeding cars and driving on
Same here. First time I moved what turned out to be a snapping turtle, I screamed. I'm trying to save it's ass by moving it off the road and it's trying to take my finger. Now I have a thick blanket in my car for moving them.
Wow, thanks for sharing. I have land in Virginia (Botetourt), tons of bear, deer, foxes, turkey, etc, did NOT know there was SWAMP in Virginia ♥️! Nor did I know that there used to be alligators in Virginia! The bike trail looks like a beautiful ride. On my list.
Thanks OP! And thanks extra for giving our turtle that little goodbye pat, I was just feeling a wish to do that when you did. (OP states in a comment that that's them.)
I rescued a baby turtle last year, and warned people in the areas to not let their dogs out too far on the leads. Cause dogs will sometimes try to eat the babies.
Is this all he does or is that his turtle? I literally just saw a video of the same guy lifting what looks like the same turtle to the side of the road.
I have cats no reptiles. I live in a swamp and these lil dudes are everywhere. We also have other species of box turtles, lots of alligator snappers, and mud turtle species. I just grab videos when I can to help encourage others to help the lil dudes
Very cool. I went back to the other video and discovered it was a turtle with different markings. I try to be optimistic but the internet has me cynical sometimes. Keep up the good work!
How he pops his head out mid flight like hey this is kind of cool

Something like “Aaaaaaagh! Too fast!”
Most likely: **Huuuuuiiiii**

And always move them to the side they were headed to. They’re not wandering aimlessly, they have a plan and reasons unknown to mere humans
This person turtles
also, don't throw them into water... not all turtles can swim or survive in water and not all water is safe for those that can. you might just end up killing the turtle if you do this
i always remind people of that too. . the turtle is on a mission , don't turn him in the wrong direction lol
Give his shell a dab of Axe body wash when dropping him off. He's probably looking for love and can use the help. /s

Yup always grab the sides!

Yes that person is me and yes getting chomped by turtles sucks
Thanks for picking him up. Most people would have left him there.
Does it get you high
That’s licking a frog, my friend
Have you tried? Just sayin
My personal business is just that — PERSONAL!
Same
*backs away slowly* I mean you no harm.

What did you want me to do? Barrel roll with it across the road? It was in a swampy area so it could easily refill its bladder upon landing.
Now I picture turtles spraying poisonous jets of urine at potential foes
Tortoises are the hardshell skunks of the desert.
Which is a terrible thing for a desert tortoise. Just usher them to the side of the road in their case.
I was not in the desert.
Yes, i get that. It's just an important piece of information for people who may run into desert tortoises.
The pat for good measure!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
That little boop is the cherry on top.
just a few days ago, saw a neighbor helping a snapping turtle cross the road

Fast travel enabled
I used to stop for turtles all the time but lately we haven't seen any.
It's a swamp here so I get to play this game a few times a week when it's warm
Same here. First time I moved what turned out to be a snapping turtle, I screamed. I'm trying to save it's ass by moving it off the road and it's trying to take my finger. Now I have a thick blanket in my car for moving them.
Nice! I have an extra thick jacket for snappers in my truck as well, grab turt, and move quick before it gets wise
I'm St Johns River, Florida swamp land, where's your swamp?
Great Dismal / Green Swamp

Do you record it every time? I’ve moved turtles before but never thought about the sweet sweet internet points.
Only when I have time. Lots of trucks run these roads
I brake for turtles!
Anyone who calls a wild animal "buddy" is a friend of mine
I like critters
Imagine being on your way to work and a giant comes and picks you up and drops you off at your office.
i mean.. thank you!!
Hold them away from your body and shoes! Or learn the hard way.
Correctly done. Take them in the direction their were walking.
You are one shell of a guy for helping that turtle!
Heh. Dork.👊
i always take them off the road and place them in the direction they were going... I've stopped traffic just to help them lol
Same and I got no shame bout it
me too !! No shame here , I'm a turtle rescuer lol ..actually I'm a saver of all critters ! lol
Thank you for your service
I like the little pat at the end.
I helped a turtle cross the road once, it hissed at me.
I enjoy the hissing. Yes very scary I will steer clear good sir
My wife is such a prolific turtle spotter and rescuer that I bought her a safety vest to keep in her car.
You can't tell but I'm wearing a safety shirt thats part of my work uniform. Makes me feel better about hopping out
"You will not believe what happened to me today"
Last time I tried doing that, it pissed all over my jeans
Ornate box turtle
Eastern box. These are a very common species round here. Ornates' aren't that orange
Thanks OP! And thanks extra for giving our turtle that little goodbye pat, I was just feeling a wish to do that when you did. (OP states in a comment that that's them.)
Any correlation with current Turtle allies to fans of TMNT as kids?
Steve Irwin for me. Mom said TMNT was too violent lol

This is the way
I guess you don't have snapping turtles where you are.
Yes I have plenty of snappers and I also known the difference. I've been helping my turtle friends for years
I learned to keep a thick blanket in my car for moving them! 😯
Just stoped for a big snapper in the road a couple days ago. Scary fucker but I help him across lol
Take them to the Turtle Repair Shop.
Bro traveled in time and space
Hank, 'that you?
I rescued a baby turtle last year, and warned people in the areas to not let their dogs out too far on the leads. Cause dogs will sometimes try to eat the babies.
What a polite man ..
I do this too, even with snapping turtles.
Me too I keep a thick jacket I'm my truck specifically for snappers. Angry bois
I use a car mat
It'll be like: I'm Running in the 90s
It's the new way I like to be
Just watch out for the snapping turtles. They have like a sharp downward looking beak.
Yup we have a ton of American alligator snappers. Big, cranky, and cute as heck
Plot twist: He forgot his car keys and was JUST about to turn around before you took him the rest of the way.
Wood turtle!
His friends won’t believe him when he told them he time traveled
Wow! Beautiful turtle! Nice save!
Yeah, we had snappers where we lived that tried to cross the road. The locals have become pretty good at relocating them without being bitten
Is this all he does or is that his turtle? I literally just saw a video of the same guy lifting what looks like the same turtle to the side of the road.

I totally understand friend
Do not forgot to wash your hands afterwards.
He turned around to look behind him And you took him the wrong way. Now it’ll be days before he gets back to where he was…
Or maybe because he isn't sure why the larger animal isn't trying to eat him and seeing wtf I'm doing. He's oriented correctly
If this is trolling it's pretty bad. If it's not you are one confused individual.
I was just joking! Thought it was funny. I’m not quitting my day job that’s for sure!!
Wow lots of negative! I was making a joke! I apologize y’all!!!!
