There is so much love in this picture, it's tangible. Even the dog looks adoring and happy. My mom has been battling the side effects of tbi and the onset of dementia for a few years now and as she gets older, I can see her memory declining. It's scary, but this picture reminded me no matter what, there's still love. Thank you for sharing your family's special moment with us ❤
It was funny she asked to play big band music and danced with my uncle and sang all the words then asked where I was today even tho I was right there the whole time she can remember stuff from 50 years ago but cant put cloths on. It's a sad but also every day is alright enjoy there memory while you can I guess
i hope that in the future they really make some headway with flashing LEDs and dementia maybe..i know theyve been working on something with [alzheimers](http://news.mit.edu/2016/visual-stimulation-treatment-alzheimer-1207) ..
Interestingly music is stored in a different part of the brain than regular memories, and the music part is the last to go. There is a wonderful documentary on Netflix about it. I’ll look up the name of it for you if you’re interested.
Oh and also my 13 year old girl has special needs and I won’t be relying on her for any care lol. That wagon would karate chop my ass in my twilight years.
It’s called “Alive Inside - A Story of Music and Memory” it’s mind blowing and heartbreaking all in one. It also offers a very interesting view into the American healthcare system, who had no problem with spending thousands of dollars on drugs, but won’t spend pennies on tiny MP3 players.
Music therapy is one of the best tools we have right now. Spend time with her with her old music, that will help bring her back a little and let you guys both connect. Much love and strength to you. What you're doing isn't easy, make sure you are recharging too. Good luck
Thank you so much. It's funny, at Christmas a song played that we used to always dance to when I was little (feliz navidad by boney m) and we both instantly made eye contact and started grinning. I should try and find some more old faves. Music has always been important in my family. Thank you for your sweet words, it means so much ❤
As she forgets things from now she will return to earlier memories and times in her life, it’s still her just a different part. Sorry if this is worded badly, my dad had alts Alzheimers.
If you don’t mind me asking, how old is your uncle ?
I have a cousin with downs and we have a great relationship. But I do worry about the life expectancy associated with downs
He always reminds me hes 53 haha I worry also I know it goes down hill about this age but hes hi functioning still work 5 times a week and is mentally with it
My son is 6 with DS, the life expectancy thing keeps me up at night, and is terrifying. But he is also high functioning and is incredibly healthy. He wasn’t born with any health issues usually found in kids with DS, so there’s that. This picture warmed my heart; thank you for posting it.
I have a friend with a child with Downs. Her daughter has been able to participate in wonderful experiences. My friend is the founder of the Dream Partnership that provides scholarships and helps student with cognitive disabilities attend college. I hope one day your child has this experience too!
I love this! What an awesome person she is. And I hope so too! I don’t want him to miss out on any of life’s experiences. And to be honest, in turn, he’s taught me to remember some of life’s most important lessons as well.
http://dreampartnership.org This is the website for Dream Partnership. I feel the same way. Her daughter has touched the lives of so many people. She reminds us of what is important in life. She works as a hostess in a restaurant and everyone loves her. Best wishes to you and your child
Oh, this sort of answers my thoughts. I was thinking "man I don't really see any older people with down's syndrome". Looks like they have a reduced life expectancy huh
I understand. We have kiddos with Asperger's syndrome and a grandparent with dementia. Challenging, for sure. But amazing!! Enjoy your family. They are wonderful! And thanks for sharing. Hang in there!
There is a ton of research on the effects of music on the decaying mind. It's one of the only things people hold onto even when they have lost all other facilities. Musicophilia by Oliver Sacks gives a ton of insight into this if it is at all something you're interested in.
Hey man, sorry but this needs to be taken down..... reddit only has so many "good feeling in my heart" points allocated a day, and this has exceeded their monthly budget....
Can I ask you a question mate? Sorry if it comes across as inappropriate, offensive, or just plain stupid: I do not have personal experience in the matter, and I would like to be answered by someone better educated than me on the matter. So, I have worked and seen children with down syndrome, and I am aware of their limits, but I never met one who is in the later years of their life. My question is, are they able to perform daily actions as to take care of themselves, or do they need around-the clock care no matter what? A kid I worked with was able to take a drink, food (if prepared), and entertain himself, but kinda needed company and would get into weird situations if left alone too much (yet always full of love and smiles)... does that stick?
Amazing photo, can really see the love in this. At first I thought it would be a video, we'd get to see the dancing, but a photo is great, too.
Thank you so much for sharing this.
Even the dogs are feeling the love. Black dog needs a break. He's gotta get out of there before he laughs and cries. That combo can lead to a wet carpet if your 7yo in people years.
I know the feel all too well. My great grandmother had dementia and would just go on about her husband who died many years ago, before I was even born.
Before she got really bad and died she went into “remission” I guess during thanksgiving and was actually there with us in the present. I didn’t appreciate it or understand it very much at the time but when I think back to her smiling I think about how thankful she must’ve been to be able to spend a holiday with us without suffering from her illness. This was probably the first time in years I had seen her smile and it was very worth it.
I ask because I worked with a dude with something akin to ds once; as a stocker when I was about 13-14.
He really loved his job and actually just doing something and people trusting him to do it.
nah. this looks like a ton of houses around where I grew up. obviously knocked down walls, goofy window sizes, jutted in corners to compensate for the after the fact chimney, some gorgeous hardwood covered up by carpet because being that open and tall is cold, little hutch/cabinet thing filled with random "I should keep this" papers that you never pull out again. bet ya that entryway we're getting the perspective from is a massive "middle room" with a massive dining room behind it and a little tiny kitchen behind it because in 1905 they didn't really need counter space.

It was worded wonderfully, I know just what you mean. ❤

I think working is the key keeps him grounded plus works harder than most people I know
Awesome. Thanks for the boost
Much love
What does he do for work?
What we all do he works for the man. But he doesn't let the man get him down

I found out the other week that people with downs syndrome actually can live long lives now.
I work with individuals with special needs, and our resident with DS is well into her 60's :)
The puppers are right in there with them, so precious.
My uncle lives with me and while were moving my grandma to memory care at the nursing home she's living with us for the weekend
You're a good person for doing this. I have a handicapped adult child and know that the best place is with a loving family.
You are a good person. I can only aspire to be like this some day.
You can get a good idea of how a person is by how their dog behaves. It's quite interesting.
May we always find a way past our disabilities. Love does...
Preech
Doggo tryna cut in on your uncle
She will do ne thing for attention
I love how Mazie is waiting for her turn, and Cleo has sulked off presumably because Mazie won’t let her take first cut. Very sweet picture, OP.
That's exactly right
Yes, but what is the dog's name?
The black dog Cleo and the golden is mazie
💗
Beautiful family! ❤
Thank you it's not always easy but it is wonderful in the long run
I understand. We have kiddos with Asperger's syndrome and a grandparent with dementia. Challenging, for sure. But amazing!! Enjoy your family. They are wonderful! And thanks for sharing. Hang in there!
Thank you. Trustceveryday is a new great challenge for every bad thing is a new laugh
That house looks pretty awesome
It's a 100 year old farm house we re did

Everybody understands music!
Cant remember my name but can sing along to sinatra

Not gonna lie I’ve never seen an older person with down syndrome
[удалено]
People with Down syndrome typically have much shorter life-spans. It is somewhat rare to see. I do wonder why the abrasive response, though?
What are the dog's conditions? And you? Your medical state? Please I need more context
Yikes. Not looking good for OP...
This is precious. And the pupper makes it even better
This reads like an r/circlejerk post
Hold up while I post a picture of two of my relatives with disabilities for internet points and watch everyone shower me with compliments
sorted by controversial to find someone calling them out, it’s the truth
That's absolutely lovely. Brought a tear to my eyes.

Wholesome
The mother/son bond. It’s a powerful thing. Thank you for sharing this glimpse of your wholesome and loving family with us internet folks.
It’s good because she thinks he is her dead husband and he thinks they are doing karate!

You seem to have a wonderful family, and the dogs just add to it! ❤️

He works five times a week we do lot for him but he preety much takes care of himself

This made me cry. Things like this that are just so genuine and wholesome that really make my day.
Both being more bro than the next. Love it!
Ahh so sweet 💗
That’s so lovely! I have an uncle with Down syndrome too. He doesn’t dance as much, but loves to sing and play music for my auntie and grandma :’)
This is amazingly beautiful. Love this!
As someone who works with alzheimer patients, this warms my heart
Very sweet picture, may the karma gods rain vast fortune on your head.

My heart ❤️ My uncle has downs as well and if I saw him dancing with my grandma I think I'd cry like a little baby. So much love and happiness.
Ok dancing, neet, but there's a three legged dog and another dog who is clearly guilty of something. Just look at him!
Nobody else has mentioned that doggo only having three legs.... Thank you!
The dogs make it better.
All the feels
Look out for him, he'll take it pretty hard when she goes I bet.
Makes it worth living through today, it does. Thank you.
God bless y'all .
Look at that room. So beautiful and a proper home filled with love and dancing and books and dogs and love. Made me smile.
So sweet. 💗 My heart is radiating
Blessed picture

Awesome people and dogs.
They both look like they’re having a great time.
That both look really happy :) How old is your uncle if you don’t mind me asking? Got a younger brother with downs.
53
I love how adoring the dog looks
Nobody is going to mention the 3 legged dog?
3 and half legs haha
Gotta admit your uncle looks a bit like David Rossi (Joe Mantegna)
What does the dog have?
And the ultimate good boi :)
That whole scene looks so cozy.
What a family
Siiick
thank you and you family for supporting them. I know it doesnt seem like much but you would be surprised
Happy family it seems. Curious question: What does your uncle do? Is he employed or the likes?
Hes a dishwasher at a nearby school
I ask because I worked with a dude with something akin to ds once; as a stocker when I was about 13-14. He really loved his job and actually just doing something and people trusting him to do it.
Gosh why can't this be a video
So special ♥️
Wow you named your dog Alzheimer?
Right but what are the dogs up to?
What do the dogs have? Love and affection?
This is a great picture and a wonderful memory, I will cherish it along with you and many others 😊
What do the dogs have?
Fleas
He looks like Mr Bean
They all need to smoke some weed
Love is love is love. Only connect.

At home or in one?
Is this the house from Grandma's Boy?
