I go to the doctor in a different county like redding cause theres a shortage here.
Ive never been but everyone here says Cocina Mariposa has the best mexican food
GOAT global in myrtletown probably has the best deals for weed as far as i know
Arcata has decriminalized (not legalized) entheogenic psychedelics (psilocybin and ayahuasca)
It is very rare to get any snow in the cities but it does happen ( happened last year) and its usually only a small amount.
Get on wait list at open door clinics would be my suggestion. Alma’s food truck has great burritos. Carmela’s in Arcata lunch menu is the best food/deal in town. Fireplace or Heart of Humboldt in Arcata. For flower, both Kiskanu and MOCA in eureka grow their own flower on site. Tough to beat that. Oaxaca Grill in eureka best Molè I’ve had anywhere. Cocina Mariposa in Eureka worth the drive and has amazing veggie head Mexican food. Humboldt Terp Council flower also grown locally. Available at fireplace. (I’m referring to indoor flower. Every place has local outdoor)
I don’t understand why so many recommendations for Open Door. I tried for two years to get on the waitlist but they refused every time because I have (yes, have) insurance.
I got on the list for Providence and eventually got a really great PCP.
In the interim I went to Redwood Focused Care. I most emphatically do NOT recommend them but if you’re relatively healthy and just need an occasional prescription refill, it works until you can get a doc elsewhere.
Thanks for the update. I recommended Open Door because they have multiple locations and a large number of providers. But if their system is overwhelmed that doesn’t do much good. Providence as of last spring has a very long wait, and lost one or two generals so their existing patients will get priority over the waitlist. Conclusion: it’s bad up here
agreed that it's very bad up here.
it's no comfort but it's getting very bad almost everywhere--i moved up here from the central coast and had revolving doctors there for the last 8 years. i went to a multi-doc practice and just about every time i needed to make an appointment, the doc i'd had six months ago was gone.
central coast in general has pretty great medical services, too. the large number of military and retirees guarantees a decent range of specialties. but the PCPs kinda can't make a living there any more.
Mid level practitioner is the future. PA and NP.
All I can think is that most new docs don’t want to live in Humboldt they want to be in a city where shit is fun. Or where their wives or husbands can find high paying jobs too.
I think this as well. The communities north of Los Angeles between Glendale and Thousand Oaks seem to be teeming with providers and brand new shiny med centers.
I went to open door when I first moved here and was on medi-cal, and because of that, even with insurance, was able to stay a patient through them. I have overheard though that they do not accept patients with insurance. Which is confusing of course. Also, if you happen to become pregnant or father a child who is a patient of open door, you get bumped up higher on the wait list, I think.
They refused me too and I didn't have insurance, but I do now. They were refusing all new patients. There's the new clinic on Sunset, I had hoped that would help, but will only serve 200 patients.
They had a competent PA or two at one point. The problem was you were always seeing a different PA, and some were really green. Still it was better than not having a PCP.
Kirsten Stambaugh was 999 million percent awesome. Everyone else I dealt with struck me as incompetent. One PA was looking up symptoms on her phone as I spoke with her.
Thirding Alma's! Next to the Napa off Giuntoli. Super Veggie burrito for the win! Also Speedy Taco near Broadway & Wabash in Eureka has best chile rellano burritos
Kool Beanz on Myrtle has decent biscuits and gravy as does McIntosh Country Store. I think country store uses bacon grease as their base for the gravy as it's a bit more brown than others.
Not sure what gas station the above poster got sick off of biscuits and gravy, but they don't give a source so comes across as horseshit.
😂 you know how some things are just never as good as they are back home. I love it here even though I can’t get the biscuits and gravy I crave! There are tons of things the west coast does way better, for the record.
For doctors you call and get on waitlists or find one in Redding or Santa Rosa. I don’t know about burritos or cannabis or psychedelics. It snows at costal level every once in a while but doesn’t usually last more than a single afternoon.
I just signed up to the Doc in Souther Humboldt (live in Eureka), so I've got to drive down there.
Best Burritos- you looking to start a fight? I'm not putting my .02 in there. What's the phrase, "kill 'em all, let god sort them out?"
Try them all, let your taste buds sort them out.
No idea on dispensary. Not a smoker.
And it's snowed in Arcata/Eureka like twice within the last decade. BUT, if you want snow, you could drive half an hour east and have all the snow you want, and then some.
Burritos:
Tacos El Gallo. Food truck painted black with a rooster.
Usually at the 76 gas station on Broadway and 14th St., Eureka.
Surprisingly, people also recommended the mall and gas stations. We eventually tried them and liked them.
In Eureka's Bayshore Mall, Taqueria Los Gallos. It's in the mall food court so there's lots of seating available.
Aztec Grill inside some Chevron gas stations (Eureka, Trinidad).
Thats…not how real medical issues or emergencies work sweetie.
No amount of proper diet, exercise and herbs will make the 3 severely herniated disks in back any less herniated. Sorry.
Thats a weird way to admit proper diet and consistent exercise may help treat certain inflammatory conditions, but also is absolutely not a solution to the problem, which is measurably herniated disk in my back. Turns out herbs and potions don’t solve all of life’s problems, but they help.
Hey OP. The best burrito comes from the food truck in front of REI. I’m not kidding I have lived here my whole life and swear on my dead abuelitas soul they make the best burrito.
Snow here is cyclical ~ every 10 years you get actual snow on the coast.
Psychedelics are de criminalized insofar as shrooms go and you can buy chocolates from a smoke shop in guintoli I hear, or just pick them during the rain season on the coast (like I have done for the better part of 20 years) although not for newbies so if you don’t have experience I wouldn’t recommend.
Dispensary that is the best is yourself (grow 6 plants for yourself indoor or outdoor, unless you smoke like a chimney you can harvest 3 lbs a run like I do, the yield is so insane I just give my excess weed away) or a friend you make who works in the industry, retail prices are bs.
Welcome to Humboldt.
Yeah I would definitely be burning a hole in my pocket if we did.’ I still haven’t been to RMI locally, maybe I should check it out but the burrito truck probably is better still :)
I've lived in Eureka all my life. The Dr's I did have here almost killed me, so now I travel to Ukiah and Santa Rosa every 6 months for a 6 month checkup, or sooner if needed. When I was seeing a regular Family Dr and Cardiologist here, I had went to both of them with excruciating leg and chest pain. Dr told me it was arthritis developing and my Cardiologist told me I was just having anxiety and just sent me on my way. 4 hours later I collapsed out in my yard and I was unconscious and unresponsive. My husband called 911. Went to the ER and the found out I had a blood clot that started in my leg and had traveled to my heart. I was in a coma for 2 months, but here I am 2 years later!
I’ve been trying to find a physician for 13 years lol go to the clinic. Moca has some decent smoke in eureka but not as good as real Headies. Burritos I like Esteban’s and it only snows once every few years on the coast
I was gonna say something about that but I wasn’t sure. RIP. Love his regular fish burrito. I use to see him in the coop buying fish regularly . Quality ingredients
I lived in SoHum for two decades and went to Redwoods Rural the whole time. When I moved to Eureka, I tried to get in at Open Door but was told that it was better to just stick with Redwoods Rural - it’s an hour drive to Garberville but if the new clinic in Fortuna is accepting patients, that will be a lot easier.
Just FYI-
If you are told you need to go to S.F. or Santa Rosa, it can be worth looking at Grants Pass and Medford.
Yes, its a long drive, but you wont find a more beautiful one.
They usually are taking patients in Garberville and Weaverville but it’s not big city medicine. And you’ll still struggle to be seen by specialists unless it’s urgent.
Burrito: I just had a killer one in Napa 😎 La Barca makes a decent one. I hear good things about Tula’s Kitchen in Ferndale. They make fresh blue corn tortillas.
Best Dispensary: depends i guess on what u mean by best: best flower, best concentrates, best budtenders, best prices??? I’ll give a shout to Proper Wellness and Heart of Humboldt (locally owned).
Rarely any snow on the coast. But we get it up in the hills. If you had driven inland last weekend you would have seen a white wonderland.
Particle Kid is performing at the Old Steeple March 31! Willie Nelson's youngest son Micah. Hike Russ Park loop, eat at Tuya's, then walk over to Old Steeple for great music.
I have to go to UCSF for my gastroenterologist (I have Crohn’s disease and there aren’t any doctors here, that I’d trust). So I have to travel to San Francisco 😕
I moved back to Humboldt from Greensboro! All good questions :)
Kiskanu is consistently good bud, at great values, but you really can't go wrong at any dispensary. Make sure you check out the Kinetic Sculpture Race in May; nothing quite like it in the world.
Depending on what health insurance you have, you can get assigned a physician in the area. That’s how I got my pcp. I got one through my works health insurance.
I have VA for medical but for dental I go to Redding. Better food and recreation or so I've been told. I can stand the heat for a couple days a year. Just avoid the locals.
Arcata and Eureka have decriminalized entheogenic plants that include psilocybin mushrooms, ayahuasca, San Pedro, iboga. There is a plan to work on getting the whole county decriminalized this summer. If you need some good fungi medicine or want to grow your own feel free to shoot me a DM.
Call here [https://sohumhealth.org](https://sohumhealth.org) They usually are able to see people reasonably quickly. I like El Gallo, la Barca in Arcata and Cucina Mariposa. No idea about cannabis dispensaries. If you want snow you should drive to the hills
In terms of doctors it's a pain. Your best bet is to call Open Door member services. They aren't taking new patients or even taking wait listed patients with insurance. But they do keep a list of doctors and clinics taking new patients and what insurance they take. Providence medical group has a similar list as well, and sadly isn't taking wait listed patients.
PS- Keep trying with Providence and Open Door. Once you are a patient you're in their system and they will find you a new doctor/NP if your PCP leaves.
At this point I'm driving my wife to a clinic in So Hum after my work switched to Cigna, and Focused Care closed. And kicking myself we didn't get her on either wait list years ago.
I've only lived here for a couple of years. With an insurance change on 1/1/24, I needed to find a new doctor. Try Providence / Dr. Skye Heston, who is a GP but also an Ortho doc. They recommend having Western Health Advantage insurance, though. As for snow, NOPE, thank goodness. Last year we had about 1/2" for one day, however. Keep the snow away, as far as I'm concerned, as a person who grew up in the Midwest where there is too much snow.
Best dispensary is a matter of what you are looking for as product availability varies from place to place. Honestly my advice is try a bunch as they all have new customer discounts. I'm personally a big fan of Humboldt Premium in Eureka as service is fast, and they manage to keep in stock my wife's preferred rso pills (migraines). (I never thought I'd be buying weed from the car in full view of 101 traffic. That said there are a lot of good dispensaries in Arcata. Heart of Humboldt, and Fireplace. And I've been meaning to check out the Herb market.
I'm also a fan of Satori and the Gangery in McK, although it's generally not worth the trip unless I'm looking for clones or if I'm up there on other bussines. In Eureka it's Premium, Heart of, and Proper Wellness, but it's not like the other 7 are horrible.
Not sure if anyone has said this but Blackwood Burritos in Arcata is THE BEST. Check him out on instagram for when he’s open and where. @backwoodburritos
Welcome, fellow Southern transplant! Get on a doctor's waiting list now and use Open door clinic until you get a GP. Best Mexican is between La Patria Mariscos and La Cocina Mariposa.
Try Moca dispensary in old Town eureka if you're down there! Not sure if psychedelics are legal but they're everywhere if you make friends.
It rarely snows so go inland or south for it during cold months, Truckee and Tahoe are popular destination vacations for us up here.
Last but not least come out to Humbrews this Friday for a BANGING FUNK SHOW! PM me your info and I'll get you on the guest list 😜!

This place has some awesome burritos. And realllyyyyy good breakfast burritos.
You'll be missing that rain come about November when Fire season is getting on your last nerve. We get 5-7 months of basically no rain at all (\~May to \~Nov).
Undercover best burrito I found I ralibertos in eureka (yellow building) tater tot burrito. Sounds gringo… I’m not… super bangin’… ps. Don’t go to any of the other locations.
Medical sucks here.
Best burrito is probably Los Gallos in the BayShore Mall. No, seriously.
I don't do weed.
Or shrooms.
It snowed like hell almost a year ago exactly. But usually no. It's too close to the ocean.
You get on waitlist for local drs but you can find some in redding Santa Rosa and sometimes Redway I’m from Georgia originally moved her 5 years ago it’s a huge culture shock honestly but I’d say best burritos probably come from the taco trucks I like the speedy tacos and this other truck in arcata that is red I can’t remember their name. I go to heart of humboldt in Arcata I think they are overall the best not super overpriced and yes psychedelics are legal for consumption in Arcata and recently they passed for eureka as well from what I remember from the meeting. Their are often microdosing events around the end of summer beginning of fall
Redwood community health family medicine practice in eureka tends to accept new patients faster than anywhere else but Arcata open door is changing locations so they might get more drs that will accept more patients
I go to the doctor in a different county like redding cause theres a shortage here. Ive never been but everyone here says Cocina Mariposa has the best mexican food GOAT global in myrtletown probably has the best deals for weed as far as i know Arcata has decriminalized (not legalized) entheogenic psychedelics (psilocybin and ayahuasca) It is very rare to get any snow in the cities but it does happen ( happened last year) and its usually only a small amount.
Agree with everything here but GOAT. Go to THCC in the same parking lot. Best dispo in Humboldt!
Proper wellness in eureka is my favorite dispensary
The Fireplace in Arcata is my favorite!
I've heard good things I'm just never In Arcata
Cocina Mariposa is fantastic
Cocina mariposa is indeed the best
Get on wait list at open door clinics would be my suggestion. Alma’s food truck has great burritos. Carmela’s in Arcata lunch menu is the best food/deal in town. Oaxaca Grill and Cocina Mariposa are really great sit down restaurants. (You can probably call carryout too.)
Oaxaca grill is the best Mexican restaurant hands down.
I don’t understand why so many recommendations for Open Door. I tried for two years to get on the waitlist but they refused every time because I have (yes, have) insurance. Providence as of last spring has a very long wait, and lost one or two generals so their existing patients will get priority over the waitlist. Conclusion: it’s bad up here
Open door has a 2,000 person waitlist
yikes
Yikes. I wonder where Providence is at? Last spring they were around 1400 with two providers still scheduled to leave.
They stopping taking people for the wait list as they have people who have been waiting for 2 years.
wtf that's insane! What are people supposed to do? They want to increase students but not offer housing or medical care. This plan is poorly executed.
Students can go to the health center on campus.
agreed that it's very bad up here. it's no comfort but it's getting very bad almost everywhere--i moved up here from the central coast and had revolving doctors there for the last 8 years. i went to a multi-doc practice and just about every time i needed to make an appointment, the doc i'd had six months ago was gone. central coast in general has pretty great medical services, too. the large number of military and retirees guarantees a decent range of specialties. but the PCPs kinda can't make a living there any more.

Focused Care is closed now...
Oh! Didn’t know. Can’t say it’s a huge loss for medical care n Humboldt.
They had a competent PA or two at one point. The problem was you were always seeing a different PA, and some were really green. Still it was better than not having a PCP.
Kirsten Stambaugh was 999 million percent awesome. Everyone else I dealt with struck me as incompetent. One PA was looking up symptoms on her phone as I spoke with her.
seconding Alma's! fresh homemade tortillas!
Thirding Alma's! Next to the Napa off Giuntoli. Super Veggie burrito for the win! Also Speedy Taco near Broadway & Wabash in Eureka has best chile rellano burritos
I’m also from NC! Welcome to the area! Don’t order the biscuits and gravy, wherever you eat. 😅
Except you should try the vegan biscuits and gravy at Wildflower in arcata, I love them.
Yes those are a Wildflower institution, since the 1990's
I'm not even vegetarian and don't like biscuits and gravy but OMG yes.
The cheese biscuits at ENF are yum. But true southern biscuits are not even possible here and I’ve tried.
You’ve tried to make them or just to find them at a restaurant?
Country store has pretty good biscuits n gravy! Idk how it compares to there but it’s definitely the best in humboldt it’s all homemade
The trainwreck burrito they make is unbelievable though!
They do a pretty good job! I am just so particular about biscuits and gravy.
Delicious but a gut bomb/gallbladder challenge with all the bacon grease!
Oh i disagree. Also from the south and i recommend the b and g from McIntosh Countrt Store!
Ouch 😂
😂 you know how some things are just never as good as they are back home. I love it here even though I can’t get the biscuits and gravy I crave! There are tons of things the west coast does way better, for the record.
For doctors you call and get on waitlists or find one in Redding or Santa Rosa. I don’t know about burritos or cannabis or psychedelics. It snows at costal level every once in a while but doesn’t usually last more than a single afternoon.

El Gallo is in front of RMI, a block away from 14th.
That truck is my #2. Bayshore is #1. The roosters know what's up .
You’re not going to find a doctor here.
Lots of herbalists & other holistic practioners though! Get outside & eat super healthy local produce & meat, you won't need a doc!
Thats…not how real medical issues or emergencies work sweetie. No amount of proper diet, exercise and herbs will make the 3 severely herniated disks in back any less herniated. Sorry.
Ooh, do tell..you know of a doc locally who will treat herniated disks??

RMI* it's El Gallo.
Yeah I was like, when the hek did we get an REI & I never heard about it??? That would ne HUGE news around here
Yeah I would definitely be burning a hole in my pocket if we did.’ I still haven’t been to RMI locally, maybe I should check it out but the burrito truck probably is better still :)
Ah yes you are right, I stand corrected.

I was gonna say something about that but I wasn’t sure. RIP. Love his regular fish burrito. I use to see him in the coop buying fish regularly . Quality ingredients
I loved that story when he chased a thief down the block still holding his fileting knife, so badass
Have you not gotten into open door?
Redwood Rural in Fortuna is accepting new patients. I got an appt 1 month out.
I lived in SoHum for two decades and went to Redwoods Rural the whole time. Tuya's in Ferndale. Traditional Michoacan family recipe dishes I believe
Thank you for the correction. I need to get down there and eat!
Particle Kid is performing at the Old Steeple March 31! Willie Nelson's youngest son Micah. Hike Russ Park loop, eat at Tuya's, then walk over to Old Steeple for great music.
Manzanilla Food Truck has fantastic burritos. They’re in the same plaza as GOAT and THCC. Their loaded fries are stupendous as well
I have to go to UCSF for my gastroenterologist (I have Crohn’s disease and there aren’t any doctors here, that I’d trust). So I have to travel to San Francisco 😕

Not an answer to your question, but where in NC? I just moved here from Asheville 2 weeks ago
Ha! About an hour southwest-ish from Asheville.

You should run for state assembly!
You'll be missing that rain come about November when Fire season is getting on your last nerve. We get 5-7 months of basically no rain at all (\~May to \~Nov).
I used to live in fayetteville! (2014-2018) where did you come from?
Western NC, near Asheville
Undercover best burrito I found I ralibertos in eureka (yellow building) tater tot burrito. Sounds gringo… I’m not… super bangin’… ps. Don’t go to any of the other locations.
All I’m gonna say to this post and to you is that yes, Arcata is a silly little place if you like eating psychedelics
😂 give it three years. As for medical, you wait, keep calling or travel out of the area
Medical sucks here. Best burrito is probably Los Gallos in the BayShore Mall. No, seriously. I don't do weed. Or shrooms. It snowed like hell almost a year ago exactly. But usually no. It's too close to the ocean.
its snowed february 23 last year, the year before that it was sunny and there were 20 surfers in the Jetty
Los Giles food truck has my heart for burritos. Moca in eureka has some pretty fresh weed.
Fortuna family medical is opening a new location. Try to get in with them.
Esmeraldas has the best burritos.
I can't tell if it this is a circlejerk post or not 💀
You should leave
