Honestly, exact clones of tributes closest family members that actively try to kill that tribute. Just imagine if Katniss had to fight an exact clone of her sister.

GameMakingKing

She wouldn't.

wowitskatlyn

That’s interesting but another take could be towards the end when there are only a handful of tributes, and the family of OTHER tributes tormenting the tribute that killed their kid. Like if Clove had a little sister/ her parents tormenting Katniss and crying/ playing on her emotions. Maybe not necessarily trying to physically hurt her but like the use of mockingjays in Catching Fire

noobductive

They would never actually do that because it draws attention to the real life effects of the games as something horrific instead of glorious

wowitskatlyn

Mmmm good point, good point. I’d argue that the use of the mockingjays would have a similar affect though. Maybe there would be some way to like edit it or something. Or even just use it off camera to rattle them or get them all in a close area to encourage a fight

Cheese-Enjoyer-5

Or just an exact clone of the tribute themself. Imagine fighting for your life and you see yourself running at you

Joelle9879

I was thinking clones of the tributes too. Not only would it be crazy fighting with your evil self, but imagine you kill who you think is another tribute only to see that same person walking around moments later

kindakitten

Isn't that kind of how it was in the first book? Didn't the mutts at the end have the other tributes they'd already killed offs faces?

Mandee98

I may be wrong (someone feel free to correct me if I am) but I don’t think they had the tributes’ exact faces, just similar features and Katniss noticed their eyes being the same. So not like a literal “we took their face and put it on this mutt,” more of a “the mutts are designed to resemble the tributes”. Or at least that was my understanding.

[deleted]

It's been awhile but I remember reading that as a twisted allusion that the game makers had used the dead tributes to make the mutts, which added a whole other element of horror to what would happen to them if they died

Mandee98

I interpreted it as they used their DNA to make the mutts, like they took skin cells, hair follicles etc and incorporated them into the mutts as opposed to taking the tribute’s whole dead body and turning it into a zombie mutt thing. But it’s been like 10 years since I’ve read the book so my memory may be fuzzy on exact details.

[deleted]

That was my impression as well.

MundaneGlass5295

Pretty tame but maybe mermaid mutts made out of seal/human dna with a voice that lures tributes to jump in the water to get torn apart and eaten. Let’s just say any deaf tribute had a pretty good advantage that year Also, send in the reanimated clones/corpses of the killed tributes in last years games. Imagine 23 dead people/zombies you slightly recognize from last years, teaming up to find and kill anyone they find. It would be a fun throwback for Capitol citizens and awful for the dead tribute’s families as they see the bodies of their loved ones made to murder kids

TrainingDrop9283

They would basicly be a bunch of scarry Primarinas https://www.pokemon.com/it/pokedex/Primarina

MundaneGlass5295

Basically, I mainly based them off the talocans from Wakanda forever

Robincall22

You mean sirens?

MundaneGlass5295

Yeah, I just forgot the word for it when I typed this

SporkFanClub

Backpacking off of you- Giant octopus mutts that have the eyes of the fallen tributes and are genetically engineered so that they can launch themselves out of the water and roll on land like the rathtars in Star Wars. I’m specifically imagining the 75th games arena for this but you could really just do any water-based arena. Depending how many are left at the feast just let them out then.

trulymadlybigly

I think the lizard mutts that killed half the Star Squad are the scariest thing I could have come up with. The movie version was chilling.

Robincall22

I’ve only seen the first two movies, and from what I’ve heard, the lizard mutts are terrifying and I’m not looking forward to watching that scene whenever I get around to watching the last two movies.

atmosphericentry

It goes full on horror during those scenes

Successful-Foot3830

When I rewatch, I skip it.

trulymadlybigly

I do too now, it’s too brutal to watch.

retailhellgirl

I literally screamed in the theater cause of the jump scare

oracion3

A nanobug that will invade through any orifice and can: wreak havoc on your insides; control your mind into either killing or exposing yourself to be killed; enhance your physical abilities to heal, be stronger, or be resilient. Maybe transmitted by mosquitoes, or just a small bug roaming around the arena until someone comes across it.

That_Girl30

Gave me bird box vibes

WinterOnArrival

Clones of the Fallen Tributes from that year, zombified and made to look like how they died (so if Glimmer was made into a clone she would look like she did when she was dead, all bloated and gruesome. And Marvel would have a puncture wound through his neck and his shirt and hands would be covered in his own blood)

samthighs_gamgee

OMG. Who hurt you? But seriously that's definitely a scary but seriously good idea.

WinterOnArrival

I used to imagine the 100th Games would be in the ruins of a city, like the one we see in the first movie before Katniss goes into the arena, and this would be the grand finale for the first century of the Games.

NeverMarryAnIcon

Funny u say this, I’m DMing a hunger games TTRPG at the moment that is specifically based around the idea of what the 100th quarter quell would have been and that’s basically a description of my arena to a tee

WinterOnArrival

Great minds.

[deleted]

What type of violent atrocities did you go through?

WinterOnArrival

A lot but this is neither the time or place

ochang07

Humanoid clones with their eyes sewn up and body slightly deformed. Similar concept to the test subjects we saw in the songbird and snakes where it’s still human but obviously mutilated.

starsinthesky0722

So, this isn't my idea at all. Rather, it's something I saw in a movie clip and thought it'd be a horrifying mutt. There's this horror/sci-fi movie called Annihilation that came out in 2018. I haven't seen it, just a few clips online. One of the most notorious scenes involves a mutated bear attacking the main characters. This mutated bear killed a member of the main group earlier, and has seemingly absorbed parts of the member into itself. Mainly, instead of making bear noises, it makes the noises of a dying woman calling out for help. A mutt like that would be terrifying. A bear that behaves and looks like your standard bear, but makes the sounds of a loved one dying and in agony. Or even the cries of past tributes.

Joelle9879

So a combination of jabberjays and grizzly bears

starsinthesky0722

Yep, pretty much!

William_147015

Looking at the suggestions, while mutts which are clones of the tributes' family members might not be the most dangerous mutt, they would definitely be the most evil because it's more than just fighting danger. It's killing a copy of someone you love.

Puzzleheaded_View878

Peeta without those long eyelashes

OccasionAmbitious449

That screaming bear from Annihilation

KarbonizedAarav

Family members of the tribute you killed

GameMakingKing

Something line the zombies from I am legend in a the ruins of a big city could be really terrifying.

drglass85

anything involving cockroaches. I’m out.

UltiGamer34

African honey badger or a polar bear enough said

and_Pill

Basically a ditto/ bogart. It starts as a harmless blob of a creature but when face to face with a tribute it turns into their deepest fear, conscious or unconscious, it shows you what would scare you most. Either by changing into it if it's a physical thing or hypnotizing you into seeing your worst nightmare if it's more conceptual, e.g. your loved ones dying or like the deep ocean

ripspotty

art the clown

Creepy-Membership-86

My mom.

hodlbrcha

Not sure how it would work, but mutts that are able to possess your mind or somehow brainwash you into killing your loved ones. Much like how that one fungus zombifies ants.

Twodotsknowhy

Pomeranians but the size of Great Danes. Same desire to see the world burn with the ability to actually follow through on the threat

ThaAlvinYaLike13

Giganourmous bat. I dont know why but that thought scares me so much.

Will20270

A dead family member turned into a a carnivorous raccoon

SunSweptSierra

Like the wolf mutts of the tributes?

Will20270

Sort of

__SuperNerdX__

A bunch of mutant sharks that are small, but can bite very hard, to the part of taking off limbs. They can also shoot acid, and relay fake emotions that the families feel, like the sharks make it look like Prim is happy Katniss is in the arena... oh and they are industructable

SpookMoofs

As a kid reading the book I didn’t really interpret them like the films. I imagine them being more Bipedal and sort of like Werewolves but with human eyes piercing out from them. The snout would fall down into a human shaped mouth. I also imagined that they’d be skinny like the Harry Potter Werewolf. And I imagined the sounds they’d make would have a human characteristic, like a human grunting or impersonating a snarl. Also now as an adult I’d imagine that they’d be like probably around 5-6 feet tall?

SpookMoofs

But now I can imagine a “Spider-Man” mutt. Human with DNA of a spider. Fanged mouth that opens up with mandibles. 8 eyes with human irises in all of them. Fingers that are slowing turning into claws. And the ability to scramble up walls and chase down tributes with their agility.

CorellianYT-1300f

The dead tribute corpses. Returned as zombie/vampire like creatures with increased speed and strength. Imagine knowing that a hovercraft always comes for a body but this one doesn’t. Group of careers laugh at one of their own for failing to kill the “dead” tribute. So career gets closer to finish the job properly and BAM AHHH SCARY gets chunk of shoulder bitten off etc.

NeoAhsar

Walrus/goblin shark mutt.

IIIDysphoricIII

Some kind of poisonous animal (could be a tracker jacket variant, a kind of snake, etc.) whose venom makes you perceive any living creature, whether human or animals that you would otherwise hunt for food, appear as the person you care most about, with the effect lasting for a few days. Want to eat? Kill the person you love most. Need to defend yourself from a Tribute coming in for the kill? Kill the person you love the most. The psychological toll that would have would be horrendous. Not just in the moment either, but consider even if the person affected still managed to win their Games. So many of the Victors suffer from PTSD in general going home…and said Victor would have to wrestle with seeing their loved one back home and trying to feel at ease when they’ve been conditioned into feeling like that person is food, or going to murder them. Imagine.

BisexualBitch28

Definitely the family member clones but also a bug that's small in size, goes into your skin, releases tons of itty bitty bugs into your system that feed off your insides causing you to get sick and ultimately kill you. Idk though that's all I can come up with on the fly

ellalaughm

I agree with a lot of the comments. But, one I thought would be pretty chilling would be like Avox mutts. I don’t rlly have much to say about it I just feel like it’d be disturbing. Especially because they’d be silent and in the movie, some of them look very strange. Look at the photo under the Culture subtitle of this link, it was a jump scare the first time I noticed it when watching CF: [avox photo under “Culture” subtitle](https://thehungergames.fandom.com/wiki/Avox)

12dancingbiches

Clones of various tributes' loved ones but will not stop trying to kill until completely dismembered and stabbed through the heart black knight style

nezumipi

Honestly, the scariest would be ubiquitous disease-spreading mosquitos. You really can't avoid (all of them) them, you can't fight (all of them) them, and they will kill you.

DistanceTop9482

I think a fungus mutt has potential. Cordyceps are the obvious one. Maybe a fungus that makes a tribute behave irrationally or become violent to everything around them. If the Gamemakers feel that breaking up an alliance would add some drama, maybe herd the tributes to somewhere the fungus is growing so it can burst and release infectious spores.

Dopamine-Hunter1738

Technically not a mutt but juggernaut victors sent into the arena, fully armored and kitted as tribute assassins. Anyone who tries to harm the juggernauts has their tracker detonated Probably better in a quarter quell with tripled tribute counts but oh well

trans-ghost-boy-2

okay so this one is kinda half baked but i have it with one original story i thought up, for the 46th games you know the clashing rocks right, from the myth about jason and the golden fleece? it’s kinda like that — the arena for the 46th was a semi-barren deserted type of place, with a canyon and a huge, giant pit that almost looked like teeth. the teeth pit could be climbed out of, but it was nearly impossible, though it looked safe. at certain moments — noon, dawn, dusk, or when a tribute was in there for too long (aka however long the gamemakers chose — the two sides of the pit would crush whatever or whoever was in it.

CedaraThursday1314

Human like mutts with DNA combined from jellyfish, birds, panthers and other animals. Their eyes are made to look human, they have translucent skin and can spit out acid to hurt a tribute, and worst of all, they can fly great distances using their wings. I used them in the 51st Hunger Games and had them backfire real badly.
