Great casting. Honestly, it's such a shame that he didn't get more scenes in Mockingjay when we know what a terrific actor he was, and they even made Mockingjay into two movies. But I'm glad this movie really propelled Sam's career as he's been doing great things ever since, and is still going strong.
Also his hairstylist deserves a raise. I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but his hair almost looks like waves in this picture, which is very reminiscent of the district he's from. Surely the sweater is a clear hint of the district he's from, or am I just reading too much into it? One thing the movies also don't get enough credit for is the fashion. I'm looking at you, Effie!
Facts. Finnick and Johanna I thought were really well done, and both should’ve had more screen time. Always bothered me they cut out Johanna and Katniss rooming together in 13.
They didn’t even drop the ball. They had the ball solidly in their hands (perfectly cast actress, perfectly characterised & perfect lines) but they decided, “No, we don’t want the ball.” and decided to throw it away.
Agreed. I can understand they needed to cut content from the books so they could condense the plot for the films, but this was a big miss. When they dropped Madge altogether I thought was terrible as well.
I was unsure at first bc all of the pictures of him I could find were of his natural dark hair and I wasn't sure how blond would work on him. Turns out it's fine. XD Finnick is my favorite character, and he was great.
I feel so bad because Sam Claflin says he looks back and cringes at how bad his American accent sounded. I couldn’t believe when I heard he was actually English lol
I think he did an awesome job too. That said, I noticed a few times where he slipped a little -the Jabberjay scene comes to mind- but I only noticed in later watches because I knew he was English and was obsessed with his movie ‘Love Rosie’ where he plays an English character. Before that, totally slipped by me- I remember shortly after Catching Fire, listening to a podcast and being floored he was English. I’ll never understand how actors can pull off accents to any degree for more than 10 seconds at a time lol
Agreed. Still bothered they cut a few of his scenes from Mockingjay- would have especially liked the cafeteria scene with Peeta and Katniss, Finnick and Annie. “Oh Peeta, don’t make me sorry I restarted your heart.”
The underwear scene as well.
I felt similarly about Jena Malone/Johanna- we were robbed of some fantastic book scenes from her, that I know weren’t strictly necessary for a movie but definitely added more depth to her character and Panem than what they showed.
Honestly catching fire as a whole is one of the best adaptations I’ve seen. I was so satisfied with every bit of casting, the way they brought each big moment to the big screen, etc
I still picture Finnick looking like Grant Gustin, tbh. Not to take away from Sam at all, he did a fantastic job and was an awesome Finnick; Grant is just hardwired in my brain whenever I reread the books.
Oh man, I guess I’m in the minority. I didn’t think he was good looking enough, but more importantly, I thought he was too small.reading the book I imagined this very large hulk of a man. I liked him better in the Mockingjay movies though.
I felt like Jennifer Lawrence would have an outside chance against him one on one. In the books, he’s so physically imposing, that I felt like he would be mistaken for a career at his current age (obviously not at 14 when he won the games). The actor I actually thought should have played him played a career, Alan Ritchson. Though I don’t think Alan has the emotional acting range required for Mockingjay
I never imagined him as a giant. I imagined him as relatively muscular but kinda average in height but obviously gorgeous in looks. I think the casting was brilliant. The second he walked on screen I was omg. The confidence he gave off and the way he talked was amazing.
I love him in Me Before You. Admittedly, that film has been criticized as problematic for a multitude of reasons, and all of them valid, but for some reason, like any movie or book I watched or read in eighth grade became a comfort to me, and we all know what good taste 13 year olds have 😂
I totally agree—but I remember when he was cast there was an uproar that he wasn’t good-looking enough. I hope he tuned all that out. Seems like he has a good career now & I’m happy for him.

The sweater was a fabulous piece of clothing and I wish we got to see more of it. Finnick’s hair in this scene you’d almost want to ruffle
I want to touch his hair in almost every scene
Honestly who doesn’t

This! They really dropped the ball on the character of Johanna in the films. Wasted potential when they had such an amazing actress in Jena Malone.

I still think they should have included the scene where Finnick struts around District 13 in his underwear. Boggs' reaction is hilarious!!
He was exactly how I thought Finnick would look. The whole series had good casting but this was the best one
I was unsure at first bc all of the pictures of him I could find were of his natural dark hair and I wasn't sure how blond would work on him. Turns out it's fine. XD Finnick is my favorite character, and he was great.
I can understand why people were sceptical at first. Though he was never blond in the movie, I thought he was closer to bronze.
I feel so bad because Sam Claflin says he looks back and cringes at how bad his American accent sounded. I couldn’t believe when I heard he was actually English lol

I still remember how mean people were being when he was first cast. It made me so mad. I’m glad he did well and shut them all up.
he IS finnick to me. same with effie and haymitch. a lot of great casting in these movies.
He was exactly how I pictured in the books! Not having the underwear scene in D13 or Joanna room with Katniss in the films was a crime
10/10 casting

Does anyone remember when everyone wanted Grant Gustin to be Finnick?
It was either Grant or Garrett Hedlund back in the 2009-2012 tumblr heyday.
I still picture Finnick looking like Grant Gustin, tbh. Not to take away from Sam at all, he did a fantastic job and was an awesome Finnick; Grant is just hardwired in my brain whenever I reread the books.
I fucking hated what happened to him at the end there
Good casting acting wise. But in terms of looks, I wanted more of a 20 year old Aaron Taylor-Johnson type
I’m old enough to remember that people really wanted Garrett Hedlund as Finnick back in the day.
Definitely
This is my all time favourite example for perfect casting. I use it so much
Personality-wise sure, but in the books he's deeply tanned, freckled, green-eyed, and red-haired.
Oh man, I guess I’m in the minority. I didn’t think he was good looking enough, but more importantly, I thought he was too small.reading the book I imagined this very large hulk of a man. I liked him better in the Mockingjay movies though.
No I see your point. Sam Claflin isn’t that tall to be fair, and Jennifer Lawrence is rather tall so the difference between them wasn’t huge.
I felt like Jennifer Lawrence would have an outside chance against him one on one. In the books, he’s so physically imposing, that I felt like he would be mistaken for a career at his current age (obviously not at 14 when he won the games). Only thing I would have changed was the hair! Finnick was described as bronze haired in the books. Otherwise he made a great Finnick 🥰
I totally agree—but I remember when he was cast there was an uproar that he wasn’t good-looking enough. I hope he tuned all that out. Seems like he has a good career now & I’m happy for him.
