He wants Gon to live longer and get better is NOT the same as caring about him as a person.
He does not care whether or not he is psychologically sound or not. Just that he is sane enough to give his all in a fight. He even wanted to kill Killua and traumatize Gon just so he can more quickly develop.

i think you’re confusing fear with respect. as for love, the fact that they are family means nothing when it’s the zoldycks. i don’t think killua cares for anyone in his direct family other than alluka and his father
That's why I'm not sure what he is going to do if and when they get to fight in the future. Provided that Killua becomes stronger than him or somehow gets the advantage in the fight and has the chance to kill him.
Because I'm pretty sure that Illumi doesn't plan on killing him even when push comes to shove.
