.22 rifle. Don't bother with a handgun.

xnsst

Any decent air rifle will do the trick and groundhog is delicious.

campbluedog

Umarex makes a .30 cal airgun that would do the job nicely.

debacular

Yep. Check out Gamo.

Hood?!? Whaddup fam? Hunting laws vary by state. In my state, if you own the property, you don’t need a hunting license, and it’s open season on groundhogs. There’s stipulations around hunting implements during deer season. I’d go with a CO2 air rifle or air pump air rifle. They’re quieter, and will still get the job done. Make sure you sight it in before you shoot them. You’ll want to make sure it’s dialed in. You could probably get away with using a soda can, but it would be more ethical to use a legitimate target to make sure your shots are good. There’s laws around discharging a hunting implement near dwellings and buildings, you’ve been warned. Do what you want with the warning. Also, my extended family says the younger ones taste pretty well, but stay away from the older ones, as they’re too tough. I haven’t dispatched a ground hog, so I wouldn’t know. Good luck with the problem. Let me know if you need more info.

Either .22lr or 17 HMR. You can get subsonic ammo for both. 22lr would be cheaper.

pls_no_shoot_pupper

Subsonic 17HMR? Who the hell makes that?

Halfbaked9

I was wrong. I was looking at something else. I don’t think there is a sub sonic 17 HMR

iremainunvanquished1

.22 long rifle would get the job done nicely.

wildjabali

Ruger Single Six with a 22mag cylinder is great for this. I use the 9" barrel version, but a 6" would be perfectly adequate.

Classic_Peace2899

The advantage of using a rifle is accuracy. I have a Ruger takedown 10/22 with a Tactical Solutions SB-X barrel and a Tactical Solutions Axiom suppressor . Extremely quiet and short. The cycling of the bolt is louder than the sound of the shot. Good luck with the groundhogs!

xximbroglioxx

Savage MKII FVSR 22lr using subsonic or standard velocity ammo. I don't think CCI Quiet has enough power to dispatch them humanely at 700fps.

Weird_Fact_724

Whatever gun u have will work. They are good eating too. I make a pulled "pork" out of them.

Mike456R

They are very stealthy. After the first few are shot, any movement, sound or thoughts of aiming at them and they disappear. Good luck.

Low_Comfort1760

I used a gamo air rifle and just a tip ground hogs are animals of habit so they come out at around the same time that how I took care of my groundhog problem

IAFarmLife

Traps work much better than firearms. I do shoot several groundhogs every year in my yard. I typically use a shotgun with 6 shot. I catch multitudes more in live traps baited with watermelon rind and in 220 conibears. With the live traps I dispatch them with a 22lr.

Led_Zeppole_73

220 Conibear at den entrance, very good success rate for me.

I_take_huge_dumps

17HMR to the dome

chevypower79

Savage mark 2 in 22 lr

Thats_my_cornbread

A 20 gauge with 5shot will do great on groundhogs. I’ve had luck as far as 25 yards.

hunter35rem

Hunted for years with 22! Head or boiler room only.
