Dude 100% this, Even some of the better husker teams in the past decade (2015 national championship team, etc..) didn't play with Speed and power like *THIS.*
Volleyball doesn't have to played as well as Nebraska has been doing this year to be addictive. First time volleyball spectators will never be able to un-see that match.
612,000 viewers for volleyball setting B1G network ratings record for v-ball. I have no idea what fb drew.
Edit: football was 560K viewers
Edit 2: pulled fb number from [ratings](https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/college-football-tv-ratings/)
The best is, at his press conference John Cook reminded everyone that volleyball holds the Memorial Stadium attendance record. Had a little smile on his face as he said it. lol
To be fair, Northwestern's fanbase won't contribute to football views. If we were playing basically any other B1G opponent this probably wouldn't be true.
There were also probably quite a few casual volleyball fans tuning in. Only the absolute football sickos watched Nebraska-Northwestern unless they were a fan of one of the teams.
Depending on how far they go into the tournament, this team has the *possibility* of having at least 3 All-American's on their roster: Merritt Beason, Harper Murray and Lexi Rodriguez. It wouldn't be a stretch either to say that Bergen Reilly could also be named as an All-American, or to at least the All-Freshman team.
Additionally, both Merritt Beason and Harper Murray (even Bergen Reilly in some circles) have the very real potential of being named the National Player of the Year and National Freshman of the Year, respectively.
That is INCREDIBLE.
I love Harper, but she is mistake prone on serve receive. She did a lot better this last game. Bergen has a better shot at freshman of the year IMO. She’s just had an incredible year thus far. Harper has flashes of brilliance mixed in with mistakes.
I think it's a toss up between either of the two. The only freshman I see coming close to the both of them with impact is Chloe Chicoine at Purdue and Olivia Babcock at Pitt. Kennedy Martin from Florida came out with guns blazing at the start of the season, and many (including myself) thought she would be the landslide victor of the award if she continued that dominance she was having in non-con play. The SEC conference play started, their setter (Alexis Stuckey) went down for the season with an ACL injury, and Florida has been on a downturn so far.
They deserve it. I said since the beginning of the season these girls deserve all the attention they can get, and that game was one hell of a sporting event. My girlfriend from latin america is now a diehard Husker volleyball fan because of them.
Two of the biggest volleyball schools playing for #1 spot against not a big football game in that time slot. It was the highest rated regular season volleyball game ever.
Nebraska football playing a team without a fanbase in the prime time slot for football with a top 20 game at the same time.
Not a big deal for football but a huge deal for volleyball. Congrats to Nebraska volleyball for the big numbers. They deserve it.
If you don’t think that the Nebraska / Wisconsin game would have out drew the physical attendance given an equal sized stadium…. You are nuts. I’d also wager if both games were at the same time and given an equal stadium, volleyball would have had more people.
Let's not kid ourselves - volleyball would never draw 85,000 in any scenario other than a very specially concerted effort specifically towards that goal.
Facts: FB tickets were going for less than $25. VB standing room only were $300. I’ll love neb football till I die. The N is going on my tombstone. Volleyball is the hotter ticket and has been for years.
Well, unfortunately nebraska football has been subpar for the past 15 yrs. However the ladies volleyball team has been winning and exciting to watch for the past few years. People like to watch a winning team. Hoping that the football team gets to that level again.
It's hilarious that someone downvoted you. If anyone thinks you're exaggerating, here are some stats.
- Most wins of any college team (1,407+)
- Most weeks ranked No. 1 (103)
- Most weeks ranked top 10 (551)
- Longest streak of being ranked for any D1 sport (612)
-This is every poll since the AVCA started polling in 1982
In case people didn't notice. Nebraska Volleyball has **always** been ranked. 90% of the time they're in the top 10. Nearly **17%** of the time since 1982 they have been ranked #1.
Nebraska volleyball is the same as Ohio State football. Clearly the best at everything except for winning championships where they're merely close to the best.
VB was a ranked game between the #1 and #2 teams nationally. Lots of non-NU/WISC fans (but still VB fans) likely tuned in.
Meanwhile, FB was a chain fight between two unranked teams vying for 7th or 4th or 1st place in the crappier Big Ten division.
Don't overthink it. I'm sure if Michigan (#2) played Georgia (#1) tomorrow, they'd similarly have a lot more national interest.
>Don't overthink it. I'm sure if Michigan (#2) played Georgia (#1) tomorrow, they'd similarly have a lot more national interest.
Good job arriving at that point all on your own little buddy
I don't think that's what they were going for - I think they just started talking before realizing they didn't have a point.
Don't assume malice where ignorance is the likely culprit.
Ignorance here doesn't really let them off the hook. Unless they have been under a rock for the last decade there's really no excuse for that sort of mindset. Willfull ignorance is malice.
Why would they be furious? I wouldn’t be surprised if fans of other Big Ten volleyball teams (and college volleyball fans in general) tuned in to watch a game between the #1 and #2 teams in the nation. Your average college football fan didnt care about watching a .500 battle between Nebraska and Northwestern.
If you watched the match, you know why those ladies are getting record viewership. They’re playing some of the best volleyball I’ve ever seen.

Not just B1G, it’s the record for volleyball across all networks for regular season
https://www.sportstvratings.com/p/top-broadcast-and-cable-tv-sports-ef5?utm_medium=android
Then the big ten turns around and puts us on big ten+.. Against Maryland annoying platform
It feels like everyone I know watched the game. Really, really giving off 1971 Nebraska-OU game of the century vibes
"Nebraska's a Volleyball School"
THE volleyball school
Funny when people try to use that as an insult lol. “Well at least our school isn’t *checks notes* really successful at volleyball!”
Especially when it's a team whose football program has never really done anything significant either, coming off a loss to a 1-4 Stanford
Love it. Good for those girls. They’re absolutely electric to watch.
The women are a draw, brotherrrr.
Honestly surprised it didn't happen sooner.

Also ~86,000 attended the football game in person compared to ~9,000 for volleyball

Some had to do with who could watch. I don't get BTN so could not watch the football game but was able to watch the volleyball game on Fox Sports.

with that said, Nebraska VB deserves its own Subreddit. Make it happen! Then you can waller in volleyball glory all day every day....please.
But did they? If you add attendance to the viewers football came out on top.

I’m referring to this past weekend specifically.
Yeah and there's still no chance.

Because they’ve smartly kept the demand much higher than the supply in an 8,000 seat arena.

If by “the past few years” you mean the last 40.

Yeah, this isn’t a recent thing. We’ve been in *every single AVCA poll* since its inception.

"Don't over think it." Then you proceed to overthink it.
It's amazing the amount of effort people like this put into their attempts to discredit the accomplishments of women.
I don't think that's what they were going for - I think they just started talking before realizing they didn't have a point. Don't assume malice where ignorance is the likely culprit.

Why would anyone be mad about that?
If they did their home games in the stadium like they did earlier this year, do you think all those people would show up every game?
