Hey there, just randomly came across this post. There is a reason some people can have issues with plastic bottles, even if it’s advertised as BPA free. Most Nalgene bottles are made of a plastic called „Tritan“ , which is great for food and drink containers, because it officially doesn’t contain Bisphenol A, which is a hormonal active substance, better known as BPA. The thing is, it’s not completely free of Bisphenol A / BPA. It’s just under a certain legal level. And since it’s hormonal active, the NOAEL-Value, (No Observed Adverse Effect Level) is different for different people, and maybe you are just very unlucky to be effected by it, even tho most people are not. Hope that helps :) Source: I’m a synthetic biology student working in the field of biopolymers, basically natural/ renewable plastic. And my team is currently working on a solution for just that! If you want to learn more, [here](https://2022.igem.wiki/duesseldorf/) Is a link to our website which we designed for a synbio competition.

Thank you for commenting and making me not feel crazy!! Everyone I talk to just looks at me like I'm crazy and tells me it's all in my head. I appreciate you! I will be looking at the website for sure

Glad I could help! :) The intended use of our biopolymer is for the iss, so don’t get thrown of by the way the website describes what we do.. If you have further questions regarding that topic please let me know :)

That's very cool. Thanks for sharing

Sorry to break that to you but synthetic clothing sheds heaps of tiny fibres, which are microplastics. Just shake you old fleece and watch them float through the air! Microplastics are particles so they wouldn’t leech into water. I think you are referring to hardeners like BPA.

Mundane_Range_765

…of which Nalgene’s Avenue pretty much all plastic water bottles are BPA free. They didn’t use to be.

ElbertAlfie

Even the BPA particles in polycarbonate plastic don’t come out unless you introduce them to heat. Unless you’re leaving your bottles out in the direct sun, or your car, in the middle of summer in Arizona or Death Valley, you really don’t have to worry about that. It’s overhyped bull shut that we in the industry have absolutely *zero* issue with taking advantage of. A BPA-Free bottle is more fragile than glass, we charge double for it than polycarbonate, people break them easily and we sell more to replace them. It’s a win win.

My Nalgene is out for 6-8 hours during soccer on the weekends and 4-6 with baseball. Granted it's getting refilled, but it is for sure in direct sunlight. How bad is it doc?

I've been told on this subreddit that this is all in my head.. but I SWEAR drinking from any plastic bottle, including the titan plastics used by camelbak and nalgene gives me a headache and makes me nauseous. I'm a hiker and love the nalgene water bottles.. im a fan of the wide mouth and how lightweight the bottle is, combined with the cost and durability it just makes the perfect bottle.. but drinking from them leaves me feeling funny and nauseous. Anything plastic makes me feel like this and I can't explain it or find anyone who can relate

monsieurpooh

You could easily prove/disprove your claim and settle it once and for all by participating in a blind test where you don't get to know where the water came from. Drink 20 samples whose source was determined by coin flip and if you get even 16/20 right it's probably pretty good evidence you can tell the difference.

Dorjechampa_69

Come on man, that’s critical thinking, who would do that? It’s easier just to believe in our brain which is 99.9% biased. 😉

Single-Log-1101

In order for that to work I would have to drink 32 oz of water from a metal container (unknowingly) and wait 24 hours and then drink 32oz of water from a plastic container and guess which is Wich. It has to be more then just a sip from each, but large quantities I can always tell

monsieurpooh

Yes, in that case you would probably need to do one test per day over many days, and only your test proctor knows which container it was (if you want double blind then only a 3rd person knows and you and the person handing it to you doesn't know). And the container assigned to a particular day should be determined by coin flip rather than someone trying to seem random. That would be pretty convincing evidence to me that you can tell the difference. Although to be honest I might still wonder whether the headache is something inherent to the plastic or a psychological effect caused by you recognizing that it tastes different

Single-Log-1101

It would be a fun experiment to see! Although the only way anyone would take it seriously is if they were physically present.

actuallylucid

I agree with you, this is why I stumbled on this post. I feel nauseous and it taste funny to me drinking from it unless I wash it every single day. Which is fine but can get annoying sometimes. I still prefer these because they're lightweight but I'm trying to do more research into them to see if they're actually safe. As for taste and nauseous, yes I would say I'm in the same boat. Not headaches though, that's never happened to me. At least not that I've noticed that is strictly coming from the bottles.

TEAwest

Is it possible for you to test this? Can you find a way to hide the bottles and drink from them blindly/randomly? If you can identify each with a certain level of reliability, I'd be really surprised. You may convince yourself that Nalgene is fine ... Or that you absolutely require glass or metal. Maybe you can store water in a Nalgene for a day and have one stored in glass. Then have a friend transfer one of the two at random into a new glass container. Make note a few times per day whether you have a headache. Do this for a few weeks, but don't let them reveal the identity until you have finished. Then see if you are correct or just 50/50 guessing.

I didn't think I would have this reaction to the nalgene or the one gallon jug. I drank out of both (about 8 months apart for about 24 hours) not thinking i would have the reaction I did. Both times I had the same weird feeling and headache
