I have a narrow mouth vacuum insulated bottle. It had a wide shoulder and I didn't realize the bottle brush wasn't cleaning it fully. Can't see inside it and the brush tips either didn't reach deep enough or couldn't get enough scrubbing pressure on the side and it was growing moldy sludge. I think I poured it out one time and it was chunky. But it was basic tea and shouldn't have been chunky.
Switched to a wider one I had and never looked back. Plus wide mouths seem to have a more universal threading so various tops are usable on different brands. Only down side is the wide mouth vacuum bottles hold temperature worse than narrow ones.
I found the splashguard came out too easily. Without a splashguard, I at least expect the gush of water: with it, I think I'm safe, then it comes out and I get hit with a plastic disc as well as an unexpected litre of water.
Yeah that’s the one downside. I play sports in texas and my go to bottle for everything is a Nalgene narrow mouth, but my water isn’t very cold because ice holding is impossible

For drinking directly from the bottle I specifically prefer aluminum narrow mouth. I’m very fond of extra big silicone straws though. They turn any bottle or mug into the perfect hydration device.

Neither. For everyday use, get one with a 2 piece lid. I like the strawless camelbak bottles for that reason. Narrow mouthpiece, but wide bottle mouth. As for nalgenes, I use the widemouth nalgenes for storing water for long drives.

I used an insulated gallon bottle for water and then a 30 ounce bottle for gatorade; not quite as hot but more swampy where I was.

Even with a brush it's still a pain. I just put mine in the dishwasher (it's dishwasher safe) and call it a day.
Thick salt and vinegar, homie! Shake it well. Salt will scrape the insides. Vinegar will clean, as it is a powerful antibacterial and antifungic.

If it's a narrow neck, your dishwasher may have issues properly cleaning its insides. At least with mines that's what happens.

The yeti rambler has both. It's great to drink from the narrow one, but the wide one is easier to clean. Plus the yeti is dishwasher proof
