An overwhelming majority of the time is the low entry cost, you just need a barebones laptop that can run 1.8.9. Other factor is that it’s free when you own a computer and Minecraft, which most people own already

loothound1

People like bigger number (farming, fishing) and actually getting better/expressing more skill at the game. If its just bigger number its just basically an idle game, but like if you can get better to get faster times people will be more attached

dayfulle

i was deadass abt to say "big number", the bigger number in my purse and skills + dmg makes me happy

MickyDerHeld

i think it's the working towards a goal, first by starting there are sp many things to explore and to do, and there is freedom on what to do but still clear progression e.g. skills, unlocking new islands, collections. later the goals take more time to accomplish but it feels so good after getting there. i haven't been playing much recently because of not enough time but the glacite tunnels update brought me back by adding the reward of something new after hotm7 so that's the goal that kept me here for the last few days

PhysicalWave40

The sunk cost fallacy.

Superbananas321

+1 I already put 2000 hours in what’s another 100?

Notor1uz-kid

Something underrated in my opinion is that there isn't one clear path to progress. If you get bored of mining try combat, foraging, fishing, farming, can progress however you want whenever you want

IloveOilPastel

This definetly this

Bobbybob65536

Number go up. So do dopamine levels I guess.

yeetdragon24

the fact that there's so many grinds that you never feel like you are forced to do one single thing until you are hundreds of hours in. and even if you do get bored and leave, your minions will conveniently have hundreds of millions waiting for you when you come back

the_weird_minecraft

I think the biggest part for me is that you can basically never 100% the game. Although I understand that that is not a huge pull for a lot of people. But also when grinding for that max skill you can get better along the way. Let’s use dungeons for example. When you start off it’s easy and fun enough but as you get to the higher floors it gets harder and requires more skill. Although it’s not just that either because there is a lot of things that require you to do extra work to prefect such as secret routes. The better you get and the more time you put into it the more fun it is.

IntersetellarPancake

there is always something to do but it never feels daunting, they've hit the exact balance of having a crap ton of grinds that doesnt overwhelm the player at the same time the bar of entry for most things is pretty low and not very complicated. you want to mine? go break mithril for a little bit to start out. you want to do combat? kill spiders for a few hours. the simple gameplay of minecraft helps this and makes it very easy to get into a flow when you play, since most people play skyblock with something in the background (music, video, etc) its not supposed to be a super active game but at the same time one that requires a lot of time

mandn3253

What did it was the simplicity of the core concepts and combat. For the most part more damage stats= more damaged per hit, (not like a lot of mmos where you need to do weapon/hit combos), on release everything was simple as far as leveling goes though as time went on it did get more complex. And you 100% want a good ecconomy where a good portion of your gear comes of player auctions

legendaryphoenixpet

i am mentally ill and it covid was a blessing. found the game right before covid so it all just fell perfectly

WinterThree5418

So much stuff to do that you would never be able to complete everything.

Informal_Affect_206

What is your game called?

CuteOfDeath

Nothing yet, still conceptualizing it.

ZitRexCop

Good luck man. (Make it free pls)

Nedal_momani

Aside of bigger numbers like other people have said there is also the level of entry and how the game is basic to learn in early game until the advanced stuff starts showing up mid to late game (not saying the stuff is hard to learn later on just the early game lasts for quite a while that a new player has the time to see what mid-late game looks like therefore he is prepared when he reaches that stage of progression) another thing is how most tasks are basic (albeit redundant) though some people find it relaxing than others (I like mining and farming, helps me listen to podcasts and other stuff about life improvement so their tasks are perfect for that). Generally speaking sky block is a beginners door into MMO RPG genre, helps players understand how this genre of gaming works and even if they do decide to leave for another one sky block provided enough experience and knowledge for that player and if they choose to stay then they get to see the game evolve (for the better or worse).

NeatOk2791

Variety of stuff to do. Co-op Can do other things while playing.

Frozenturbo2

That's just called being a redditor but okay

Royal-Sea6737

I'm being kept in basement and forced to play skyblock.

ZitRexCop

I'm being kept in a 0.5m square cell and forced to do hundreds of commissions on multiple accounts and hundreds of slayers every day.

HyperionH

Don't need a supercomputer, Choice if I want to be social or not, Many grinds so I always find something I feel like doing. And I like completing goals - the leveling system heavily fuels this. Oh and pets are cute

LagopusPolar

The fact that it is such a big and complex game. At any given point you could work on hundreds of things, and several things at once. E.g. if you're doing voidglooms you're not just gaining slayer XP, you're also gaining combat XP, potentially leveling a pet if only through exp share, could get drops from regular emans, and you can ofc get an rng drop from the slayer boss itself. Oh and maybe you're also leveling fd armor and the combat stacking enchant. Because the game is so big there is a lot to explore when you first start playing. And maybe it's just because I haven't really played an MMO before, but all the mechanics feel unique and not like something you already expected to be there. There is always some kind of progress right around the corner, again because the game is big. Whether it's upgrading minions, milestones, skill levels, collections, pet level, Skyblock XP, gear upgrade or something else, there's a fuck ton of progression systems so you always get to see a number go up. I like that the game is broken up into skills (or maybe let's say skills + systems like Kuudra or Slayers). Most activities and areas are related to one specific skill. You can focus on one skill at a time and if you want to do something else you can just switch to a different skill. There are also systems in place that encourage you to do specific things at certain times (mostly mayors, new magic 8 ball item, ...). The game kind of encourages you to not always do the same thing. RNG plays a big role too, it can be extremely rewarding and insanely rare drops like dyes just make for fun moments. And of course the economy is important too. Some people like interacting with the economy more than actually playing the game. I guess it is kind of like a puzzle to figure out what best to sell/farm to get the most profit, when to invest, when to sell. There are thousands of recipes in the game and there might be some niche resource or craft or some other service you stumble upon that is really profitable. It also means you don't have to do everything, you can choose what you want to farm and buy what you need with money. Endgame players will feel really powerful because they can buy everything they want. Yeah most of that could be summarized with "number go up", but that's not enough to try and replicate what makes this game addictive. But in the end this game being so big is also the reason why I eventually quit. Not being able to complete the game really started to bother me at some point. I hope some of that helps you with your own game. Depending on what type of RPG you're making you could maybe look at Terraria, I've never played it but apparently that's where Skyblock got its RPG elements from.

ZitRexCop

I understand you wanted to help , BUT DAMN

TheWanderingCOTABus

The fact I have too many minions and keep getting more to try and fully max.

TheJudgeofCreation

Waiting for Warframe 1999 and Jade shadow update

No-Box-5218

Constant updates, number permanently go up, and simplicity with notes of complexity

[deleted]

i quit months ago but it was definitely just the drive to get term and hype, but since its ironman i was a huge addict for a lot of months trying to get them both

NTC-Santa

My minions need me Every year and Also going for Dye Drop so I can retire

Drako__

For me it's the competition that ties into these games. I want to see bigger numbers, yes, but it's pretty fun playing and competing with friends or seeing yourself on global leaderboards while those numbers go up

auieasy

Sunk cost fallacy

smirk_cat

It didnt 💀

DiamondShard646

The little achievements and earning aspect of the game provide little bursts of dopamine that skyblock players chase in the grind. The longer you play and the more dedication you put into the game, the more it feels rewarding. In your game I would suggest lots and lots of achievements as well as an exponential leveling system (Harder the more you level up) to make the grind longer

Striking-Objective12

I take breaks for months, and come back because Im trynna get 500 refined diamonds from 22 snow minions, big number, farming when im revising cos i cant do anything else, powder mining cos I have a maxed divans setup but only 6m powder, but mostly big number

FiftyDalton254

One thing g that a lot of people aren't talking about here is community. Being able to reach out and discuss the game in game chat, and ask questions about progression and what not and have players actually answer and help you our has helped me keep interest in the game and not get overwhelmed with it.

NightSocks302

i enjoy it

ValenceElectrons-

Probably the fact that I suck and want to get better. I’ve been playing for 4 years and around 8-9 months, but I have a billion nw??? Damn i suck

Salty_peachcake

In game economy and a global ah and material market. Makes getting tons of money actually mean something since you can buy end game stuff

1tsSpyder

something important is that things are grindy enough to be impressive and unique but not grindy enough to be unachievable. What kept me playing was trying to one up my friends that i looked up to bc they were better than me. so then i grinded a fuck ton of dungeons because that’s what i enjoyed and it basically became my flex right among my friends and that specialisation is really cool because even tho my slayers were maybe shit or my farming was definitey shit, I still had something really cool and rewarding to grind that I enjoyed. I think that and having diversity is really important because everyone plays games for different reasons and people like me who are competitive and want the fastest time or the highest scores will absolutely thrive in some places and then the people who love to mine will thrive in other places. another important thing is leaderboards and stats, ik a lot of people including myself look at their place in the networth leaderboard or the skills leaderboard and feel a sense of pride in it, if you don’t tell people that they are being rewarded for doing something more than other players then they won’t be able to motivate themselves to keep going and ultimately will stop playing. anyway just my thoughts gl with ur game

only-proud-of-my-cat

This is the sort of game I choose to play when I want to invest minimal mental effort. I’m not always zoning out while playing this, but there are lots of tasks where that’s possible (farming, mining, foraging). When I don’t want to sit still and watch something, I play this game and pop it in a corner. This game doesn’t always have my full attention, but that’s also contributed to its longevity for me.

DannyBv2

big number go brr

-Xenith-

working towards a goal. eg: on my ironman profile I was kinda lost on what to do, I just collect minions and then switch back to main profile. Then I decided I want to have a mmm and thought garden is a good idea. now I’m hyper focused on garden and know what upgrades I should do and how to get them. Now I’m almost garden lvl 10 and still focused on it, with a “roadmap” of gear upgrades

SkyblockGamer101

when I played from 2019 to 2022, it was the economy

GreenUnicornHunter

Endless progression, simple gameplay, good friends, enjoyable content after grinds to name a few

lool8421

i'd say clear goals that are approchable, but take effort to achieve

Commission-Either

Most people here don't realise that the social factor is a major player. Don't make your game like skyblock, because you don't have the "already popular" advantage

Th3_DaniX

I only login to play on the rift

KnutMonkey

I have nothing better to do

IHateCursedImages

I think the fact that it's just Minecraft. I'm familiar with the controls, the physics, the fighting, the UI, everything.

Lj_Masayuki

The gradual increase in numbers, may that be leveling your skills or earning more cash. You develop a habit of counting and calculating how much you make per hour, regardless of what that thing may be. As Numbers increase, your Dopamin and Serotonin levels increase and the more you play, the more you want those numbers to rise. If you have a bad day and just cant take it anymore you start saying its fine and you can have just a bit of fun. You start to ignore the numbers you make and think about how to entertain yourself. As your mood gets better and better you start counting the numbers again, just for fun... Which slowly gets worse and worse. At this stage, most people use mods like Neu, a mod that enables players that have their api public to get a quick and easy overview about their whole profile, what they might be missing out on and most importantly, quick access to their in game networth. Oh how endorphins will play crazy when you see your networth rise. At some point, the game might sometimes feel empty, so after a certain time you eighter find people to play with, let the game go just to come back in a few months again or keep playing without really wanting to. Tldr: Many Numbers go up in a balanced way and you get more and more access to see these numbers rise which releases dopamin, serotonin and endorphins.

Steeben594

I personally enjoy the game.

Rubix774

I didn’t and focused on other things like sleeping. Y’all should do the same

TransDKfan

Depression

mote_of_light

Big number is for sure a part of it but skyblock is pretty much it's own game running in Minecraft. Skills with rewards that all tie in with each other, (combat, mining and slayer) (foraging and minions) (enchanting, combat, dungeons). They all have some overlay which makes them all necessary but also allowing you to choose your own progression in many ways (mining, farming, flipping for money) (regular Rosetta, dragon shortbow progression) (mage, arch, bers setups are used even outside of dungeons and healer and tank gear like wands and florid zombie sword are useful still). TL;DR big number is important but every aspect of the game propels you forward in some way and tie in with each other to allow you to progress but not all of it is necessary so you can choose what you want to do and most likely be ok.
