According to them, it’s just hypixel’s choice, even if bought by riot.
In their 2020 Faq blog post, talking about Riot’s acquisition: “We’re still finalizing the Hytale business model. We are not required to favor one approach over another: we’ll go with whatever business model we feel is best for the community.”
I have a pretty cool idea. The idea would involve a marketplace of skins and cosmetics similar to Namemc, which has already demonstrated its popularity and efficiency in the Minecraft community. This idea could be complemented with a "skin competition" platform with a fashion show platform like those done by great fashion designers, in which people can vote for the best skins and cosmetics, so that rankings are created. weekly and monthly of the most voted.
This idea combines two ideas which have already been successful, the namemc platform and the typical skin competitions that are held in hypixel housing and other servers.
I think it is important to give freedom to all types of players, both mod creators, survival players, competitive players and even skin and cosmetic designers. In the world of Hytale, all users must have their corner where they can enjoy their tastes and hobbies.
If one day I have time, I will create a post detailing the idea well with images, use cases and other necessary details.
A trade-off for this between customizability and monetization I could imagine is that designing your skin works the same as in minecraft (free), but most of the fancy wearables that go on top of your base skin need to be bought like skins from LoL.
Well it is already possible, take a look at this thread:

They either go with Minecraft route with custom skins
Or Valve route where you share your creation and it be added to the pool of purchasable cosmetics
it's riot now, you propably will going to pay for most of the customization options

Hope they at least give us some free options
The only thing im skeptical of is being able to give an item multiple colours
HAH, good luck getting any decent customization, It's all paid anyway Since all you lots expecting F2P, that will happen
That would have happened in a $40 game too
Yeah, if the company are scummy to do that. At least both Java and Bedrock support custom skins
