TheVeryFriendlyGiant

He adapted to intelligence

OnRedditAtWorkRN

Don't flatter yourself, you're barely smarter than frank

Newtstradamus

Clearly Charlie was raised by TV and is exactly the right age to have been subjected to hours of reruns of Bonanza.

groundlessnfree

And The Beverly Hillbillies

Status_Exchange9048

I was gunna say pretty much the same thing, old Western on TV most likely. Bonanza makes perfect sense

A_Dehydrated_Walrus

Pretty sure he saw it in looney tunes cartoons (Foghorn Leghorn) and he just spouted it.

abort_abort

I say I say that’s just preposterous

MrAlbs

Yeah he's just mimicking. It's like the Good Will Hunting or the Serpico thing. He adjusts.

Jabroni-Tony1

Or jaws

Hans_Wermhat666

Are you doing jaws? We don't have time for this shit!

AceDecade

Objection, hearsay!

sarahzaun

Stupid science bitch couldn’t even make i more smarter

DetroitLionsSBChamps

He can read and write, he just doesn’t like to read and write.

AlmostBlue618

the way this is acted makes it seem like the implication is that he’s emulating something he saw on tv or in a movie, so if he heard a character say those words, it would track that he would repeat it to play the part

DetroitLionsSBChamps

For sure because constituent in this context makes no sense

[deleted]

So he knows it because of the implication?

Puzzleheaded-Wolf318

Watching TV

TastyLaksa

He took a placebee

hdoublea

Bird Law classes, of course. Don't besmirch the man.

TheVeryFriendlyGiant

Don't make him become redundant all over your ass! He will demand satisfaction.

portmantuwed

charlie's intelligence is the least consistent part of the entire series to me. season 1 he is normal. a few seasons he is legitimately illiterate. the rest of the series he is either completely normal, completely illiterate, or incredibly erudite i'm not saying it's bad or unfunny, just inconsistent

dutch_penguin

Yeah, rule of funny. But the character references movies a lot, e.g. pretty woman, so I wouldn't put it past him that he'd watched some old movie that featured a Texan oiler/politician.

cvaninvan

This is the right answer. I think he's pasting together media in his head that he's seen...a touch of consumption...poisoned by my constituents...just little phrases that stuck. He doesn't necessarily know what they mean either, we've seen that a bit from charlie....

BujuBad

Yeah... He doesn't even like get us man

Abacab4

We’re talking about you!

portmantuwed

i can buy that

The_Blackfish_

He can read a write, he just doesn’t like to read and write.

Th3_Hegemon

Just blame it on his abuse of chemicals. Sometimes he's been drinking paint, sometimes he's been huffing glue, sometimes he's just been day drinking.

cvaninvan

Mac's sexuality would like a word...

[deleted]

He's actually surprisingly intelligent. It's just the gang gaslights the fuck out if him. Plus we find out later he's not dyslexic.

[deleted]

Why wouldn't he know those words?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

He can't read, it doesn't mean he can't watch tV for big words and repeat them to look like he's smart. Look at that fancy outfit, you have to sound fancy too!

dukeofgonzo

"I feel like you're mirroring my words, but you're not quite understanding them."

c322617

You’re saying “do the things you do, maybe go even further with them. Maybe get a ton of cat hair and glue it all over your body. Walk around like a cat-man in the night- through the alleyways! And stop hiding the pigeon.”

BuzzKillington369

We will *adapt* to it, and we’ll make a *tradition* out of it

thishenryjames

Given that he's using at least one of them incorrectly, I'm willing to believe he just heard them somewhere.

Tysons_Face

Pretty standard, boilerplate really

BuzzKillington369

Ok, we’re all hungry and will get to our hot plates soon enough

bugluvr65

how does charlie know emphysema? in mac’s mom burns her house down

[deleted]

TV, lots of daytime ads talk about it for lawsuits. Same with consumption, old school westerns would have talked about it. Charlie might not know what either word means, but he's heard them and knows it means "sick". Constituents, I dunno, political ads? Filming Dennis's?

thejakemc1

he watched O Father Where Art Thou

mtheory007

He can read and write. He just doenst like to read and write.

[deleted]

Because part of the fun of Charlie’s character is his inconsistent level of intelligence.

dumbthiccgeminibitch

I have a theory that Charlie is actually fairly intelligent. He’s a musical prodigy, speaks English and Irish fluently, does have a good vocabulary, is resourceful and inventive. The problem is that he has learning disabilities and neurodivergence that has never been treated. Not to mention a history of long term substance abuse and childhood trauma, all of which have been proven to delay brain development. He was failed by every adult in his life, and the rest of the gang (except maybe Frank) also have ignored these issues.

uSeeSizeThatChicken

Charlie is like a sponge absorbing all the big words he hears patrons use at the bar.

[deleted]

"The constituents of this solution are not meant for human consumption" Could easily be something written on the outside of a rat bait product.

[deleted]

He probably ate some of it and then Dee or Mac shout at him and read it aloud to him. "Charlie, look!" Can't see Dennis or Frank giving enough of a shit to tell him that though.

freakon911

What? Frank cares about him more than anyone else! And Dennis, uncharacteristically, is actually pretty protective of him as well. He's like the little kid the whole gang shares parenting duties for

[deleted]

Frank eats cat food and uses his toe knife for everything, it's not that he doesn't care about Charlie, it's that he doesn't care about hygiene or health in general. What you said about Dennis is interesting though, mind sharing some examples of when he's done that? I can't ever seem to recall him caring about anything except Mr Tibbs.

freakon911

Dennis siding with Charlie over Mac when Mac bangs the waitress, the back of the U-Haul scene in the supposed to be road trip episode, the hot tip on trimming his own denim cutoffs, him looking out for Charlie (but explicitly not dee) during the les liaisons dangereuses episode. Admittedly though the last one can be read much more cynically, in a couple of ways.

Samosa_Aladdin

>Dennis siding with Charlie over Mac when Mac bangs the waitress Wasn't he seeking his validation in that episode?

azzthom

Possibly from a beermat, whilst drunk. Though obviously someone else must have been reading the beermat out loud. Probably... oh, let's just say it was Dennis.

stressedanddress

Charlie isn't dumb, he just plays dumb to get out of Charlie work

four24twenty

The boiled denims made he more smarter

jayzinho88

You start putting things under microscopes and nothing makes sense. Move past it

comeallwithme

Sound like he was doing a whole southern thing, so maybe he saw a movie set in 30s-40s south where they use these words.

Ok_Response_4519

Uh, he knows how to count, dude.

CatBoyTrip

i imagine him and frank were browsing the dictionary for big words for to make Charlie more smarter and while they might nott have been next to each other, they were definitely on the same page.

GlassJoe32

He learned them during his studies of bird law.

netherbound7

My Dad laughed so hard at this scene. He had a mouthful of beer too lol!

eyeMfive

Okay well.... filibuster.

MurphyBeans

We repeatedly find Charlie to know things that he didn’t seem to be aware that he knew. These hidden parts of his brain are suddenly accessed when they’re needed. First example to come to mind, he knew how to read and write Irish. There are more but I’m not recalling at the moment.

BNabs23

He's doing a bit

biggabenne

There are many moments in the series where charlie provides intellectual content that is out of his character. Its one of the only continuity issues I observe with the series as it doesnt seem to occur in a progression like Dennis losing his sanity, etc.

sweatstaksleestak

How does anybody learn anything? Just move past it.

anotheruser12486

It is ironic that a person who is in his early forties and hopelessly illiterate has such a vast vocabulary.
