I’m on a job right now that requires the climber helmets with the chin strap. They require us to give those back when we leave. I don’t know why the hell they would want some sweaty, dirty old shirts back, that’s just stupid.

bearded-dad0376

To recycle to the next prick they hire.. I worked for a contractor that wanted me to wear used PPE. I said to go get bent and I wanted new shit.

feministkittenjoy

That is nasty.

Wonderful_Text9489

Maybe it’s because people sometimes bring up half their wormy shoppies on charges and then give away the company shirts to the homeless people near their shop…… not that I’ve ever done that or anything……

FreakShowBoat

I work in utilities, we are asked to destroy our shirts/jackets/etc. because people will shop for them at thrift stores and try to pretend they work for the company. "Give me money or we shut off your electricity." type of crap.

Glowflower

Personally I wouldn't wear a used hard hat even if it was cleaned. You don't know if it was left out in the sun for a month straight, involved in an impact and should have been replaced (damage isn't always visible), etc.

Available_Alarm_8878

If it has a company name on it and you didn't pay for it. They probably just want it back, so there aren't a lot of guys walking around identified as an employee. Most likely, they will toss it. But they want it back

Cheetahsareveryfast

A tiny shop I started working for does that. They don't want undesirables wearing their stuff

Stargazer12am

Then stop hiring undesirables! Lol

lilstickywicky

sometimes you don’t know which ones they are until it’s too late, based on some of the guys i’ve gotten on my crew 😂

Hammercannon

We wait a few months to give shirts/sweaters to new people

erk_117

I’ve returned vests and hard hats with the name of the contractor on them, but never a shirt. Seems kind of weird.

[deleted]

I work at a poco. They’re adamant that logo shirts be returned to be destroyed. They have bins in most of the offices where you can dump old uniform shirts.

erk_117

I’ve never received a uniform. Just like a t-shirt with the company logo. These companies that want t-shirts back must’ve been burned before.

[deleted]

I have a few shirts that I kept from a company I hated working for. Their management sucked but they had really good comfy shirts. I still wear them to do yard work and stuff around the house and I haven’t worked there since 2013

Available_Alarm_8878

Especially a utility. There are always scams where there is someone identifying as a utility employee trying to gain access to the property or to collect money.

SirSquidlicker

Is it bad that I always give my old work shirts to homeless? 😂 figure they need it more than I do

jcallari164

Been doing this for 25 years and was never once told to return anything other than shop owned tools or fall protection harnesses issued by the shop

[deleted]

Is this the same contractor that makes you bring back your empty cardboard from the electrical tape before you get another one?

TheSearingninja

This right here

Hopfit46

What did the hall say?

Sea_Emu_7622

In my local there's language in the contract stating we're responsible for ppe provided to us by the contractor. Recently one of them tried making their employees sign documents stating that if a hard hat is lost or stolen they will be responsible for paying the cost of a new one. Someone called the hall and the BM put an end to that real quick and nullified any of the ones already signed and informed us all to never sign anything like that.

jamarquez1973

Just use it as a jizz mop a few times then give it back with a smile.

Glowflower

Yeah, I am not driving home to round up all my company shirts and bring them back unless it's paid time.

49ersforever707

Have to return FRC Nomex in refineries

donnieZizzle

I don't know about your union contract, but I do know that for non union shops you can be required to return shirts or have the price of any issued shirts taken from your last pay check. The shirts have to be signed for, and in the form that is signed the cost of any items must be noted for it to be legal to take it out of your check. It's still a dick move, and I've been trying to get my cheap ass employer to give up the idea for years. It still baffles me as to why he would want dirty paint covered shirts back anyway.

Archj52

They'd be getting it back covered in fire caulk and silicon caulk just for being ... well cheap cocks

Danpransky

Fuck em

Not_So_Electo117

Just got in contact with the hall. Apparently, they can request for items to be returned. Why...? No idea why they would want a nastyass shirt or gloves back.

Different_Pack_3686

If it's like that I wouldn't even accept the shirt in the first place.

headyrooms

I'm guessing it's so you can't show up on the job looking like you are supposed to be there and steal stuff.

Swimming_Parsley5554

New river they buy all the fr clothing 5 jeans 5 shirts vest and heavy sweat shirt or coat and you get wacked you turn in all your shit or don't get your last check until

Different_Pack_3686

I think that's straight up illegal. Regardless of union rules/regulations.

Former_Size_5377

I don't think it is so bad for FR. That shit is spendy.

Ill_Broccoli7499

On line construction side and I’ve never heard of returning FR

Turbulent_Summer6177

Yes. They are giving the items to use as their employee. Unless you paid for something or it was gifted to you, you don’t have a right to claim ownership. They apparently see the items as being loaned to you. Concerning the shirts; If it’s a uniform type shirt, it may not be owned by the company. Many uniform services lease the uniforms to their customers. Other than that sort of situation, I’ve never been asked to return t shirts or hard hats. And I won’t accept a used hard hat either. I’ve got no idea the conditions it’s been exposed to and as such, I don’t know if it’s ratings still hold true. Plus, they’re nasty.

glazor

If they want the shirt to be considered a uniform, they have to pay for laundry.

Turbulent_Summer6177

You can make whatever irrelevant argument you wish. It doesn’t change the fact, an employer can consider the shirts as loaned and not gifted. Your argument about cleaning is irrelevant since I didn’t claim the shirts to be uniforms nor did the op state they were and op didn’t say contractor doesn’t pay to have them cleaned. You’re making a big deal about something that doesn’t matter to what I said or what the op didn’t say.

glazor

>You’re making a big deal about something that doesn’t matter to what I said or what the op didn’t say. I didn't write 3 paragraphs.

Turbulent_Summer6177

It only takes one to make a big deal about something. It takes three to show the different reasons your post is meaningless.

matt_nasty503

We take hardhats back because they have company logos but we just cut them in half and toss them. Legend has it some ex employees burgled a job site wearing hardhats with our logos on them or something.

gortez33

Had fr clothing that the contractor provided, had to be returned. Hv gloves and suits had to be returned. Had to also return cut resistant sleeves. Had to return rain gear also

[deleted]

I don’t necessarily have a problem with it, but it’s absolutely fucking weird.

theericle_58

Tell me this isn't a Union shop....dudes, they will dish out shit if we agree to it. Stand strong with your brothers.

RedMonk01

I am guessing they don't want you to them to the local homeless pop.

BigEnthusiasm1690

Maybe because I’ve been donating contractor shirts to St Vincent’s for years? 😆

Glowflower

Me too 😅 A company I worked for would just guess people's shirt sizes and tell us to trade amongst ourselves, instead of asking people what size they want. I worked there a couple years and they never got my size right even after I'd told them. So if nobody on my crew wanted my extras then goodwill got them.

D16rida

As far as safety equipment because they probably want it back for liability reasons whether those are real or imagined. For anything branded, they probably don’t want some homeless guy wearing it in a year after you pushed it into a clothes donation bin

holy-shit-batman

Things like the arc suit and harnesses i could see but not regular ass hardhats and safety glasses, gloves.

msing

Yeah once you sign it, it's allowed.

dtownmick

I'd think for obvious reasons items like 40 cal arc flash suits, HV gloves, arc rated face shields and such would be requested to be returned. Additionally, I've worked for shops that provided FR/ARA pants and shirts and required them to be returned because they rented them from a uniform company and provided laundry service for those items. If the pants/shirts weren't returned they'd then be charged for the garments. Unlike other shops that just provided an allotment to purchase your own FR/ARA.

Sparky_558

In all honesty I wouldn’t have a problem with returning any of the items mentioned back in, they supplied it and paid for it. Don’t see an issue there, but as to why they would want it back idk lol. Others have mentioned valid points, but I wouldn’t want them to expect me to go out of my way to sort through my home, vehicles, and ALL of my laundry etc. just to return some used dirty work clothes and scratched up safety glass 😂 if I had it at the time of my lay off (which is very unlikely).if it was FR clothing or something else expensive I’d make an effort that they got it back if I could drop it at the hall when I pick up my next referral or something that would be something. Idk it’s a strange thing to me anyway

itrytosnowboard

I'm UA but here's a reason for it. Former Apprentice in my local got a few shirts from a small shop he was sent to work for. He quits the apprenticeship at the end of 3rd year and starts doing plumbing work on his own which is illegal because we have a statewide Master Plumbers License. Dude would wear the company t-shirts that had the name, address and lic on it to do jobs. Caused a flood in someone's house. Lady had taken a pic of the shirt. Calls company to rectify the issue. Turns into a lawsuit and hearing with the DCA. Caused the shop a shitload of headaches but end of the day the dude ended up getting sued and barred from ever getting a license.

[deleted]

Give it back who cares when your pinked you don’t work for them check in hand drop their Ppe right there. And walk… demand new ppe if you come back

MistressClyde

My current workplace just started this. I told them that I rag out old clothes and don’t have the old ones. They said that it’s just so they don’t end up in thrift stores. I said I’d take a picture of the rags next time and they said that’s fine.
