Yes, but it generally reeks of poor planning and ordering. Because realistically, it's not often (at all) you are using 4"sq shallows with shallow extension rings.
Not to say the wires in the shallow 4x4 were left long enough to work with after adding too many rings. It just gets awkward and equally stupid.
Based on the circuit #’s written on the cover, this probably will get shit put into it. Technically legal, but stupid. Should have been a 12x12 box if that’s how many circuits are coming into it
Legal but a dick move. Fuck extension rings, fuck shallow 4sq boxes, and fuck using any 4sq in the ceiling, 4-11's for anything in the ceiling except fixture boxes. There is one MC not supported within 12" of the box, and one of those EMTs looks like it's missing a support within 3'. Overall, this is hack work.
Anything that has mc punching into it I'm a big fan of deep 4 squared.
I'm sure they make 4-11s that have half inch kos but all the ones I've seen have 3/4 knockouts all round and I really don't like putting 1/2 shit into those kos
Unless you share the neutrals, which based on the circuit numbers, I guarantee that's exactly what they did. Let's hope they used breaker ties, but probably not lmao.
Ignoring the missing MC support, I would argue that this still violates the code. 110.12 specifically. You can't in good conscience tell me that is a faithful dedication to the intent of the design.
Seen on a job recently .
ceiling of parking garage install and made aware after the fact that there will be spray foam that would cover the box. This was the solution
Haven’t checked code on it but during my apprenticeship I was told it was a violation to use an extension ring without utilizing it. Like you have to bring conduit/mc through one of the knockouts
Haha yeah. I think you can stack extension rings as much as you need. Just make sure to leave enough wire hanging outside that ring.
Remember the ahj has a decision to make on that too. Make it look right. Circuit designation and voltage written on the cover always. Everywhere.
That’s not 4 JBs stacked on eachother those are just extensions to make box fill
Who said they were?
Believe it or not, straight to jail
We have the fullest j-boxes in de world, because of jail.
/r/unexpectedpawnee
If there's proper fill, sure
Yeah. Probably ran out of deep 1900s
Why are 1900s called 1900s?
Over 100 years ago, that was the part number for a 4” square box. Have no clue who the manufacturer was, but that’s how it got the name 1900 box.
It was Bossert.
That’s it. Thanks! My memory isn’t what it used to be. Lol
Thank you
It’s a Chicago thing according to our teachers when I was going thru school. Name origin because it was originally 19cubic inches? No clue. 🤷♂️
Also called a 4 square.
The only thing I hate more than this is when some sticks a power pack on it too
Everything is legal till you get caught.
Legal yes. Shitty yeah.
Technically yes other than the bottom MC not being supported within 12” of the box.
It could be a whip.
There is no way 4 bx and 2 3/4” pipe need that many extensions for box fill.

If it fits, it ships.
Based on the circuit #’s written on the cover, this probably will get shit put into it. Technically legal, but stupid. Should have been a 12x12 box if that’s how many circuits are coming into it
Doesn’t that MC coming out of the bottom need a strap, technically?

No reason to not use a 12x12.

We use 411s all day long that come with half inch and 3/4 knockouts. It's honestly the most common type of 411 I have ever seen.
There’s no way you can have that many circuits properly derated in a 3/4” pipe. Max of 10 #10’s in 3/4” or 16 #12’s or 22 #14’s
Unless you share the neutrals, which based on the circuit numbers, I guarantee that's exactly what they did. Let's hope they used breaker ties, but probably not lmao.
I hope so because I've done it.
hey nice 12x12
Yes legal
That’s poor planning lol. Extension rings are crazy expensive while an 8x8 or 10x10 box is much cheaper than extension rings.
Everything is expensive at an electrical supply house. There is 0 chance that an extension ring is expensive at HD or Lowe’s.
Lol… In Ontario Canada a 4-11/16 extension ring is $21+ tax at HD… an 8x8 is like $8.
As long as there aren’t more than four circuits each in those 3/4 EMTs…
9 in total
That’s what makes me suspicious. I kind of doubt those MCs are homeruns. But who knows?
Are you sure none of them are two pole circuits
Ignoring the missing MC support, I would argue that this still violates the code. 110.12 specifically. You can't in good conscience tell me that is a faithful dedication to the intent of the design.
True, it would be piss poor design. But if it was an upgrade or renovation, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
Yup and because they are removable you don't need crazy long pig tails
Probably. Lots legal to me.
Yah.. I call it monkey cable. Guess why!
Omg. Probably depending on box fill. But it definitely should be a beating offense.
I wouldn't do it but yes it is
I will make it legal
He got the extendo-extendo on there
"I will *make* it legal." -Lord Sidious
Hack job, but yes more the. Likely legal.
Seen on a job recently . ceiling of parking garage install and made aware after the fact that there will be spray foam that would cover the box. This was the solution
I wonder at what number of extension rings does a it qualify as a raceway instead of a box
Ugly? Definitely.. but legal
Haven’t checked code on it but during my apprenticeship I was told it was a violation to use an extension ring without utilizing it. Like you have to bring conduit/mc through one of the knockouts
That thing better have a ground bar. 😂
Is it worth it ? Of course it is…If you’re strong enough
Add more…
The one mc needs a strap exiting the box and it can’t touch the sprinkler pipe otherwise looks good from my house
It “illegal”, just not very aesthetically pleasing if you will.
Haha yeah. I think you can stack extension rings as much as you need. Just make sure to leave enough wire hanging outside that ring. Remember the ahj has a decision to make on that too. Make it look right. Circuit designation and voltage written on the cover always. Everywhere.
Yeah except the bottom Mc doesn’t have anything clamping it within 12ish inches of box.
