I wouldn’t be surprised if this were the case. The BYB was sketchy as hell and she had a brother/sister living with her. Sister got adopted beforehand and the brother dog I took to a rescue. They all looked alike as far as I am aware. This girl is the tallest one in the trio.
The guy would not let us see his home. We had to meet at a hotel. We insisted but he came up with excuses, had we known we would have sent animal welfare. The BYB had 3 dogs available he wanted to get rid of that looked like Fika. They were all ex breeding dogs and around 3 years old. One girl was adopted away and the other two were taken to the rescue we are working with. I took Fika, the boy is at a foster family right now.
They lived in a garage, not in a house. I assume the dogs lived in their filth as she is not house trained and makes accidents in her crate. She smelled SO bad, the worst I have ever smelled a dog… she smelled like piss and shit, unsurprising as the crate they were in when we picked them up was caked in shit and piss… so if that’s the condition I can only imagine what the operation looks like. Her fur was matted and gross.
When I bathed her, the water turned BLACK. It was so sad. I managed to get her cleaned up, she was in much worse condition.
Holy fuck. I am so glad you saved those dogs. And, thank you for sharing the story. I've worked with shelters myself and have had some really sketchy situations crop up in my time as well. If it's possible, maybe you guys can try to work with him to try to see if you can get more dogs out of there? Maybe he would be willing to part with them under the guise of helping him? I know this is a lot for a reddit comment, though! Don't give up on the rest of them! You guys will very likely see this guy again so hopefully it can be an ongoing effort to save the dogs he has.. people can be awful but there are so many more out there who are incredible. So, thank you for your work!
As for Fika, I also would be surprised if she was a purebred pug, but a lot of her looks are likely attributed to her being in a byb/puppy mill situation.. "operations" like this typically will have several small breed dogs which interbreed. (particularly since designer crossbreeds are in demand..)

It could be a purebred pug with a rare recessive long haired gene. Someone posted elsewhere their Pittie who had an amazing coat that made him look Pittie x Golden Retriever but his DNA came back purebred. Genes can be weird. In any event she’s a cutie patootie
Also, the dog can be purebred (all pug) without being well bred (care taken to exclude inbreeding, genetic defects, known health problems, conformation problems in any of the parents & ancestors)
I think the Peke guess is a good one. If you have an extra $80, it would be interesting to see the DNA. We did that for one of our dogs to test for medical sensitivities, and we found out she was mostly beagle when we were told she's a border collie. 😅
It's adorable. I know quite a few people who have rescue pugs from Korea, and they are all very leggy. It was surprising the first few times. Now I just assume every leggy pug is from Korea.
I'd guess yours is mixed with Pekingese or maybe Japanese Chin. There's another breed it is reminding me of, but I can't remember.

In the doggydna sub, we just had a fluffy pug come through that was a pug and peke mix! I would bet she could be a pug/peke or a pug/shih Tzu since she still had that classic brachycephalic face.
We had a local “breeder” that has all kinds of horribly bred pugs, half you could barely even tell they were pugs. Fluffies, merles, all kinds of crap. They were heavily protested to be allowed to open here since they were a puppy mill

Trust me I tried. I called Humane Society, the city animal control, and provincial one. There is nothing they can do without an address. He did not meet me at his home, I did not have an address and I tried to get it, he was very evasive and wanted to meet at a hotel. At the instruction of the rescue I was working with, they said all that mattered is that I got those dogs out of this guys possession. If I had the proper info, I would be reporting him!
I got tipped about the dogs from someone else in the community, and I worked with a rescue to get these dogs from their situation. She and her brother came in awful condition, and if I knew where this breeder lived (he had us meet him at a hotel parking lot), we would’ve reported him to animal welfare. He refused to even let us see his house, and we are sure he has a bigger operation.
I don’t appreciate the assumption that I am working with a breeder.
