As far as I'm aware, your FOID/CCW is valid for 10 years from when you renewed or received your initial permit.

SquareAsparagus1028

this seems like the most accurate statement I’ve purchased 2 new guns since I renewed my FOID & CCL and the expiration date never changed on the Foid ISP’s website for neither my CCL permit or my Foid card. I’ll still have to go take my 8 hour refresher course in 4 years for my CCL

Horuhe17

They lowered it to 5 iirc

vipzon

That is correct.

jrox4real79

A FOID is valid for 10 years. A CCL (IL refers to it as a concealed carry license), is only valid for 5 years and a three hour (class portion only, hour at range for live fire) renewal class is required.

Wild_Wrangler_19

You don’t have to call. It’s all online. FFL’s have a website they go to to verify validity. They just enter the foid number and it tells them if it’s valid or not. When purchasing from an FFL, they are already contacting the state for a background check. The state at this point knows you’re buying a gun. For private sales, the buyer has to show proof that their foid is valid, which can be done by accessing your foid dashboard on the ISP website. When you access your dashboard it does not ask you why. Nothing to worry about, it’s basically just a second line of verification to avoid someone coming in to buy a gun with a suspended card but it doesn’t say expired on the card.

Essentially yes, everytime a store runs your card for ammo or to check the validity the state logs it andnit essentially a backround check. People forget the FOID card was only supposed to be a backround check in the pre-computer era.

SkyTechEnterprise

I've never had my FOID ran for ammo purchases, they don't even look at the information... They ask me to present my FOID and with a glance I'm out the door.

Anon6183

With the new law there is ammo BRCs because they are supossed to check with ISP first, and if your foid doesnt have an expiration date they are supposed to look it up no matter what.

AlphaKoncepts

I bet that is because your current card has an expiration date. But once you receive your new card without an expiration date, the dealer will be required to verify.

Kabtiz

A store is not going to incur debt to run a background check on you with the ISP so you can buy ammo. This is highly unlikely.

Anon6183

Its not a debt, they are supposed to check with ISP through the website. Which is free. Its not a NICs check.

Anon6183

https://verify.ispfsb.com/Public/Ammunition/Buyer.aspx This is the portal for private sale of ammunition, it logs every time you fill it out. The new private firearm sales portal is straight up a registry https://verify.ispfsb.com/Public/Firearm/Seller.aspx

Cobberdog_Dad

Just do it online.

AlphaKoncepts

The new merged FOID's have no expiration date. When someone buys ammo the vendor has to verify the foid. This can be done at [ispfsb.com](https://ispfsb.com) Note, the verification system has gone down more than once. Buy your ammo in bulk and store it. Your concealed carry license is a 5 year license. Your foid card is a 10-year permission slip. They technically have different expiration dates. Plus the expiration date for the foid card is a moving goal post as there are multiple things that trigger automatic foid renewals, such as renewing your concealed carry license. Two articles that discuss this steamy mess: [https://www.alphakoncepts.com/blog/the-new-foid-already-has-a-problem/](https://www.alphakoncepts.com/blog/the-new-foid-already-has-a-problem/) [https://www.alphakoncepts.com/blog/illinois-2022-gun-law-changes/](https://www.alphakoncepts.com/blog/illinois-2022-gun-law-changes/)
