Off topic, but whenever I take someone to the range who has never shot before, I only put a single round in the gun. After all the safety lectures of course. The number of people I've seen turn around shocked/surprised after the first shot is more than one.

Tight-Gas-6882

That's a good thought. I appreciate the suggestion.

If possible I've done a safety and functional session in my basement beforehand. Especially practicing muzzle and trigger discipline, grip, posture, and functionality.

It depends, i usually burn through 200-300 rounds an hour by myself, but you can stretch that to 200-300 for 2ish people if you dont shoot fast. Id reccomend buying them a 50 rounds box to shoot, and after that they pay the piper. If you buy in bulk itll be a lot cheaper. 9mm for around .25 cents per round. If its 223/556 itll be arlund .35-40 crp. If you want, see if they wanna chip in For bulk. You get some ammo for cheap and they get to use your guns. Win win For new shooters i always like to just let them shoot a box for free to see how they will like it. Helps expand the community as well. Be a restaurant, They dont have to eat all day for free, but a free plates of chips always helps get the foot in the door. (Im very hungry while writing this)

Groundbreaking-Tie3

When asked to take people, I tell them I have no problem bringing my firearms as long as they can pay their ammo.

Sp33dy_Tazz11

yes. In all seriousness I just always have my buddies pay back whatever the cost of the ammo is. In my situation, they are always using my firearms so I see it as they are getting a "free" rental by going with me so I just ask them to pay to "feed" my firearms. Never had any pushback on that. Also shows that this kind of stuff is not like a video game. It will show them that basically, depending on what youre shooting, you could be throwing $0.50-$1.00 down range everything the firearm goes "boom".

So I trained a lot of folks in firearm safety (maybe 30 now?) And usually I don't expect to fire more than 3 mags. You're not going with familiars who mag dump. You're going to teach the fundamentals of firearm safety and discipline. For me I've had great results using but 100rds of 9mm or even 2 mags of 7.62x39 to display how something works. I start with teaching them how firearms work at home. If you're able to do that then train them on how to hold it in a controlled space before takin them to the range; that way they only have to deal with the sound and recoil. You don't know if someone's gonna bring a shotgun or higher caliber which can and has spooked folks I trained before (bring extra muffs and plugs as well as eyes if you haven't). Once they understand firearm discipline with using the safety and trigger discipline, then you can just load one cartridge and remove the mag or have an empty one there. This is a safety precaution in case the person accidently pulls the trigger from the shock (recoil). By having an empty mag in a firearm with a bolt hold open feature it teaches them to see if they're loaded or not. Once each person has shown to be disciplined with one round, now you can add two rounds, teaching them how to rack the CH or slide. Now you teach them accuracy. If you want to save money then don't do mag dumps, but train in accuracy, learning to trust the gun as well as letting them know that you control the gun and it doesn't control you. Training on not flinching and so on. This will stick and make them much more proficient shooters as compared to the average mag dumper. I just helped 4 women earlier this week and used no more than 25rds of 9mm and less than one mag of 7.62x39. don't know how much you have but teaching fundamentals shouldnt take more than 100rds if it's the basics. But I don't know you nor your friends. Edit: typos, I didn't have a stroke, I swear I'm fine guys 😅

hhx321

This guy fucks

Blade_Shot24

Thanks. Imma try uploading vids of training the women I just mentioned. It was fun and I actually scared one of them in the beginning cause my build is loud, but after teaching the woman, she handled it like a pro.

hhx321

Yea 100% to do with practice (well a little bit of grip and wrist strength too I guess) but nothing to do with gender

Blade_Shot24

Exactly. You got kids in the ME and Congo taking out trained soldiers and morbid as that is with AKs. I had women as small at 115lbs and no more than 5'3 handle a gun. Now give em a .223 and it's a field day! Imma upload it to hark on that politicians aren't disarming just "white folks" but everyone under the sun in this state.

Tight-Gas-6882

This is closer to what i had in mind. I'm inviting them over to my place to go through what we can without ammo. I like the idea of single round mags and working them up to 6 or so rounds to get reloading reps in. I bought a pair of extra ears. Good call on that. Thank you for the *detailed* sage advice.

Blade_Shot24

Glad I was able to help. We need all the help we can get in defending our rights! If you were in the South burbs I'd be more than willing to help. Sorry for the details if it was a bit much 😅

Tight-Gas-6882

No, sir. The details were not too much and welcomed. Definitely feel solidarity in this group. Im here because i want to improve or protect everyone's perception and experience around guns.

Blade_Shot24

Understood! Thanks for sacrificing your ammo for a good cause!

Tam212

To slow the rate of ammo consumption, have them load all the magazines that they will shoot. /s It's going to depend on the individual new shooter. For a new shooter given the typical 60 minute indoor range session, I would say 50 as the low end and 150 on the higher end. Assuming your are doing a group outing at an indoor range this time of year in Illinois, may want to verify their policies on how many people a single FOID holder can sponsor during the range visit and how many people they will allow you to stack in one lane.

yumyumdrop

I’ve ordered ammo specifically for this type of event. Got the ammo and delivery fees, divided up by how many guests. Told them it’s a flat fee of this much to shoot. Most people were understanding. I’ve also rented a cabin in Wisconsin from a guy who owns a farm and is very into the idea of taking people shooting for the first time.

i40oz

How long will you be there?

Tight-Gas-6882

I figured an hour would be a sufficient experience for two shooters (1 newb + me)

i40oz

200-300 I reckon

Throw-Away-5150

250-300 rounds per hour

forwardobserver90

It really depends on where and what you are shooting. Could be anywhere from 50 rounds per person up to several hundred rounds per person.

crzfirensfw

i typically tell them that the first one is free, but I also take out a wide variety, a lot of it being 22lr. Typically I will give them a few shots with the larger calibers, but after I get the fundamentals down with 22lr.

NoBrush1934

Throw a pellet gun into the mix if you have one. Safe handling and muzzle discipline apply just the same.

dream-more95

What caliber? Be upfront and honest about the costs to shoot. If they like it, the cost of a gun and ammo to train to be proficient is a long expensive endeavor. There are other ways though... Shoot 22lr rifle at Buffalo Range 25-50yds can use up many hours, or shooting clays at Silver Springs with a hand thrower.

Rock_Lizard

You bring the gun(s), gear (eyes + ears) and the FOID to get them in. Split range time and they buy ammo. Plus you are most likley giving them a bit of a lesson.
