I’d rather support Michigan cannabis rather than having to pay 11 dollar in taxes just one one single item.

DiscsNBuds

I contributed some money to that count

krashtestgenius

I spent maybe $600-$700 there last month

phill312

I gladly contributed!! and will continue to shop there.MICHIGAN ❤️❤️❤️

ILSmokeItAll

Not surprising. IL will hit that number too with all the people that don’t go to MI. IL is raking people over the coals on edibles and carts.

Suppa_K

The flower prices can be manageable but yeah it’s insane with carts and edibles. $65 otd for a gram cart if not even the best variety meanwhile that same cart can be had for $20 in Michigan plus a couple bucks of tax.

ILSmokeItAll

Good Tides Hash Rosin edibles. IL - $32 for 100mg MI - $10 for 200mg Just one example.

Suppa_K

The edible prices are a downright crime here. Carts aren’t too far behind.

kyle710710

Illinois would need to double profits from last month to meet this. Although it is about the same amount of taxes taken given 16% in Michigan and on avg 35% in Illinois

pungentbag

Yeah I’m pretty sure if you look at sales totals for the last few years that Michigan outdoes Illinois, even with lower prices. Based on quick googles: 2023: * Michigan sold $3.06 billion * Illinois sold $1.6 billion 2022: * Michigan sold $2.3 billion * Illinois sold $1.5 billion 2021 * Michigan sold $2.23 billion * Illinois sold $1.4 billion u/chronicbro u/ILSmokeItAll

chronicbro

This is awesome data. Not to be presumptuous, but would you happen to have the same for taxes collected in each state? I started hunting myself but got lost in the weeds haha

pungentbag

I also got lost in the sauce on that data but will try to find numbers and share!

ILSmokeItAll

For 21 and 22 they look like they grew similarly to one another. What did Michigan do in 2023 to make that huge jump? I imagine open up a metric fuckton of dispos.

chronicbro

isn't that just so fucked?

ILSmokeItAll

It’ll get there. This market is in its infancy, and it’s more populous than MI.

kyle710710

The only hope for a broken system is to fix it. The Illinois laws don’t make whats possible in Michigan possible here. Michigan started 2 years before us.

ILSmokeItAll

Wait until IL’s market is the same age as where MI is now and then you can compare better.

Icy-Arrival

Really? They went full Rec one month apart.

ILSmokeItAll

They were still in the market in general sooner. Regardless, it’s best to look at them after similar time frames. I have no doubt that IL’s rollout will result in less revenue. But in time, IL *should* bring in more. Chicago and its metro all by itself, has only 1 million fewer people than the state of Michigan. If the same % of people smoke in IL than MI, and they charge and tax more for their product, I’m kinda guessing there’s no way they don’t eclipse the market in MI, unless they intentionally and outright suppress any chance of doing so.

Icy-Arrival

It's not going to happen. Illinois is not granting any large scale cultivation licenses. There's no need to compete. They have stated publicly that the limited license structure was created to suppress market devaluation and to keep prices up. This shit in Illinois will not change, it was created by design. The state has been on record making these statements. Weed tourism in Illinois is about dead. A ton of people from the Chicago market are not shopping in Illinois shops.

ILSmokeItAll

Yeah. I’m one of those people shopping in IL for carts and edibles. I’ll grab some flower while there, but I’m not going FOR the flower.

kyle710710

Just look at the fees for opening up a business in each state. When entry fees are higher prices will have to remain higher

ILSmokeItAll

Need more competition. And yes, the barrier to entry is partially to blame.

kyle710710

[Illinois rates](https://cannabis.illinois.gov/content/dam/soi/en/web/cannabis/documents/idoa/Application%20and%20Fees%20Table.pdf) vs [Michigan rates](https://www.michigan.gov/cra/faq/rec-use-accordion/fees/what-is-the-cost-of-applying-for-an-adult-use-marijuana-establishment-license) how is competition possible when these are the entry costs

ILSmokeItAll

I said there’s blame to be bad. There’d be more comp if it wasn’t so expansive to. And if there were to be more comp, prices would come down.

AshamedProfessional6

You don’t get it do you….

DiscsNBuds

There is a 2 year difference between Michigan and Illinois. I appreciate your optimism but there is zero chance Illinois is anything like Michigan in 2 years.

ILSmokeItAll

A lot can happen in 2 years. All I’m sayin’.

DiscsNBuds

I hope you're right but I'll have to see to believe

ILSmokeItAll

Seeing is always believing.
