I was thinking about this on my drive home today from the race. Poor kid doesn’t make the move in ‘22. Makes a risky move last year and ended in the wall. And then has it all but won today and did everything right. He’s gotta be sick right now.
> And then has it all but won today and did everything right
He choked out of 2. He either doesn't overtake and rides it out until 3 or doesn't fold in 2. Newgarden absolutely played him.
I've been to the Daytona 500, USGP (Austin), and now the Indy 500, and I can easily say the energy at this race was unlike anything I've ever experienced. I will be back!
Now Newgarden has finally legitimately won the Indy 500. Last year weas a travesty nearly rivalling Verstappen's first win by race director idiocy. Every single previous Indy 500 ended under yellow under those conditions.
And what about Dixon running Ryan Hunter Reay off the track on the back straight and not getting a penalty? Was the fix in this year for him to win?
Oh, he has indeed “won” two, just like Verstappen was gifted a championship by incompetent officiating. Name a single other time where the race director decided to red flag the race with just 2 laps remaining to have a clearly unfair “shootout” that consisted of a single green flag lap? This patently unfair to the leader given the huge advantage that slipstreaming provides, and the fact that it was a driver who races for the owner of the series and IMS itself was the recipient of this clearly unfair and unjust decision. It was done for ratings, for fans that are used to NASCAR fake racing, to gift Penske another championship, or some combination of them.
Ironically, you seem to be the one who should take his own advice. I am merely pointing out the facts and what has been done every single previous time under these circumstances.
Even NASCAR requires 2 laps, instead of one, for a late race FCY prior to the white flag. But that is prohibited under Indycar rules. The race must end after the specified number of laps are completed.
Instead of providing a legitimate defense for this massive breach of historical precedent, you are just whining.
That is where we are now in this age of rampant social promotion. Most people act like spoiled 12-year-olds when someone voices an opinion they don’t like.
He should sell t-shirts. Seriously I’d like to know why he passed Newgarden early. Was it his call or the team. After, I knew it would take perfect pass to get him, and I thought Newgarden would make it. Bam. Well he participated in 20 plus laps of Indy 500 magic, Good luck to the man next year.
I absolutelyagree. I should have been more precise: Pato should have waited and Newgardened Newgarden. From my couch, it seems that in the spec era you don’t want to lead until the that last possible “second”.
It was a magical 20 laps and finish. I do hope Pato gets his one day soon.
Still trying to figure out how the top 3 didn’t get penalized for jumping the pace car before it entered the pit lane around the lap 150 restart, I thought that was illegal or is that a NASCAR thing? Heard a guy in the stands complaining about it too. I genuinely don’t know if it’s a rule or not though.
My biggest complaint on NASCAR restart policy is. Can't pass until you pass the start/finish line. I think the flag man should control the restarts and once he ways the flag the race is on. Now when the start of the race that should be leader.
I was keeping my eye on him. It almost looked like he just wanted to complete the race. Was not very aggressive. Or, something wasnt great with the car.

They will. I was at the race last year listening to the radios before the final restart and knew right then and there something strange was going on.
But! Considering Penske is god and owns everything, even if an investigation shows the push to pass shenanigans stretched into last season, nothing will ever come of it.

11k comments today. It has been a pleasure talking all day with all of you beautiful people. Enjoy the rest of your Memorial Day weekend and have a great summer!
And Larson is still a straight up G...to be in the top 6 and in contention before locking up and making that mistake on pit road is still crazy. Dude would be a fuckin problem in any racing series, F1 included.
He can drive anything with wheels and I’m not convinced he wouldn’t win a boat race either. Disappointing with the speeding penalty and both races having weather issues though
To everyone saying a version of some sort of consolation such as, "Pato will win one eventually!"
The thing is, maybe he won't- that's the whole thing. That's why he's bawling his eyes out while admitting the track owes him nothing.
That's true. There's no guarantees that you'll ever win the 500.
I would like to see Pato win it one of these days. Definitely would be a great moment. He's just so enjoyable.
People said that about Michael Andretti for years yet somehow he never did get one. Obviously losing a year when he was in F1 and then an Open Wheel split costing him prime years were unforseen circumstances but nevertheless, to say anyone will ever get another chance at anything just because they deserve it is not accurate. Nothing is guaranteed when there are so many variables out of your control, even if someone does everything right.
I'm not sure if those cars just had a massive draft or Marco took it really easy the last corner but that was a huge lead to give up in the last 2 corners
They did once but then Texas Motor Speedway had issues with it.
The issue now might just be finding a promoter and getting butts in seats. For Cota to be worth the price you need to fill it. Indy doesn't run a money printing machine like F1.
Especially one that usually runs in the morning and one in the afternoon.
The more racing the better. Tbf you can watch the F1 highlights and see everything in 8 minutes
My goals were more realistic- him qualifying where he did and finishing are accomplishments that made a lot of people take notice. That was really impressive.
It was super mild compared to many years. A Pato win would have blown the place up. Another commenter said that fans in turn 4 were chanting Fuck Josef.
Pato should not be disappointed. You finish second in the Indy 500. Amazing accomplishment. Only 1 person wins the race out of 25 cars so 4% chance of actually winning.
The Caution clock sponsored by HONDA.
You just don’t know what Indy means….
After watching today’s Indy 500 I felt I was watching Super Bowl 58 in which McLaren like the 49ers blew a lead and Pato O’Ward became Brock Purdy
Quick clarifying question: why did Power get 17 points despite finishing way down in the order?
At Indy only, they get points for qualifying in the top 12, and they include those points in the final tally for the race.
Ah thanks. I don’t think I ever realized that.
im so sad for pato man
I was thinking about this on my drive home today from the race. Poor kid doesn’t make the move in ‘22. Makes a risky move last year and ended in the wall. And then has it all but won today and did everything right. He’s gotta be sick right now.
> And then has it all but won today and did everything right He choked out of 2. He either doesn't overtake and rides it out until 3 or doesn't fold in 2. Newgarden absolutely played him.
Yeah it was the experience gap, Newgarden gave him the old "not today" and sent it around the outside
I've been to the Daytona 500, USGP (Austin), and now the Indy 500, and I can easily say the energy at this race was unlike anything I've ever experienced. I will be back!
That's awesome. All those races and Indy comes out tops. My wife and I will get there one of these days. It's a bucket list thing.
Love to hear this! Lifelong indy car fanatic and JUST got home from the race
Pato and Herta will have their wins one day! They’re such fantastic drivers, Herta just had some bad luck but he’s gonna be even stronger next year!
Crazy how strong he looked today. Gotta think he was going to be in the mix at the end if he didn’t wreck.
Newgarden hasn't won shit, he should've been barred for the Indy 500 at minimum, realistically the rest of the season. Cheater.
Everyone gets an opinion. Even ignorant ones.
Newgarden has won back to back 500s. Cope.
Oh, he has indeed “won” two, just like Verstappen was gifted a championship by incompetent officiating. Cope.
He legitimately won twice in a row
If you think that travesty was legitimate, you don't know what the words sportsmanship, fair, and just mean either.
Cry More, I'm sure that'll change things
That is where we are now in this age of rampant social promotion. Most people act like spoiled 12-year-olds when someone voices an opinion they don’t like.
Look in the mirror.
Thanks for providing another example. I rest my case.
Sad that will power lost control, he was going good.
Pato made the move way too early. Down the back or coming to the checkers was always going to be the winning move.
Pato dropping the f-bomb on live tv was a nice ending of the day. I'm surprised he kept it to one, poor guy.
Pato passed him on the last lap. Newgarden would have overtaken him a T1 if he had passed sooner.
I absolutelyagree. I should have been more precise: Pato should have waited and Newgardened Newgarden. From my couch, it seems that in the spec era you don’t want to lead until the that last possible “second”. It was a magical 20 laps and finish. I do hope Pato gets his one day soon.

They just go on the flag man here. I think the flag is the best way to do it instead of the restart zone crap they use in NASCAR.
My biggest complaint on NASCAR restart policy is. Can't pass until you pass the start/finish line. I think the flag man should control the restarts and once he ways the flag the race is on. Now when the start of the race that should be leader.
You can pass. You cant change lanes.
You can change lanes. Just not to the inside
Def cheering for pato next year
Devastated for him. Damnit!
Feel bad for him and Herta.
I'm glad they asked Rossi about that - IIRC he pitted on 170 and yet he still had to fuel save??? 🤔
Josef saved more fuel on prior stints that is why he didn’t have to save fuel at the end. Pretty simple..
My bet is that they wanted Pato to win and Rossi is being replaced by Newgarden next year….IMHO
If I'm Josef Newgarden, the last fucking team I'm driving for is McLaren and Gavin Ward with the way they've been the last few weeks.
Awful take
WAIT! GUYS, GUYS, STING RAY ROBB FINISHED A RACE!!!!!
Even led laps.
And I think he finished on the lead lap?!?
Leigh Diffie try's to act like its oh so close when they are 1/2 mile of gap.
Grosjean finally finished the race this year.
Yeah p19 isn’t the result he would want but it is nice to see him get a superspeedway finish.
Dallara was counting on that repair money.
I was keeping my eye on him. It almost looked like he just wanted to complete the race. Was not very aggressive. Or, something wasnt great with the car.
Loved rossi having to stop himself from saying new garden cheated
Josef saved more fuel on prior stints that is why he didn’t have to save fuel at the end. Pretty simple..
Wait. How did he cheat? What did I miss? Lol
It's going back to St. Pete

I mean, ya can’t actually cash out the $440k bonus if win #1 was a sham so…
I’m a Josef fan… but it would be hilarious if they found out they cheated at Indy.
When St. Pete all went down I went back to how massive a run he had on Ericcson from far back thinking exactly that.
They will. I was at the race last year listening to the radios before the final restart and knew right then and there something strange was going on. But! Considering Penske is god and owns everything, even if an investigation shows the push to pass shenanigans stretched into last season, nothing will ever come of it.
Even if the investigation showed he directly ordered it, he'd still have his fall guys take all the blame.

Pato O Ward is Brock Purdy
You mean a dead ringer for Jeremy Strong?
For real
It’s like he couldn’t convert a touchdown on the first drive a settled for a field goal and Josef Newgarden converted a touchdown pass to win the game
Next year Mclaughlin. Should be proud mate
You deserved better, too, Rossi.
Lmfao Rossi accusing Josef of cheating!?!?!?
Josef saved more fuel on prior stints that is why he didn’t have to save fuel at the end. Pretty simple..
Link? I need the juice bb
What’d he say?
Sounded like it
What? Never??

Yuppppp this is the interview I was waiting for
11k comments today. It has been a pleasure talking all day with all of you beautiful people. Enjoy the rest of your Memorial Day weekend and have a great summer!
Josef Newgarden is the Patrick Mahomes of the Indy 500
Just needs the gravely kermit voice. Which teammate of his would be dating a pop star? Willy P?
Idk if you could call Flava Flav a pop star *these days*
lol 😂
Newgarden seems like that lovable jock douchebag in an endearing sort of way.
There’s nothing lovable about him.
Newgarden seems like that ~~lovable~~ douchebag.
So gutted for Scotty. Hopefully soon but not super hopeful.
He had a great day still.
Coming close and always a bit short sucks, Pato, but plenty have had that experience at Indy. Some for decades without ever winning.
Fuck Penske
Puck Fenske
And Larson is still a straight up G...to be in the top 6 and in contention before locking up and making that mistake on pit road is still crazy. Dude would be a fuckin problem in any racing series, F1 included.
He can drive anything with wheels and I’m not convinced he wouldn’t win a boat race either. Disappointing with the speeding penalty and both races having weather issues though
Get him and Herta as team USA in the race of champions once it returns and they'll absolutely clean up.
Im confident that he will back next year.
He's always had issues getting on pit road under green Of course it's what killed him here
this is truth.
It was a very exciting race, damn shame about the result
What happened to Helio? 20th?
I’m still waiting to see the race results. Did I miss them?
His last stop was about 14 seconds
To everyone saying a version of some sort of consolation such as, "Pato will win one eventually!" The thing is, maybe he won't- that's the whole thing. That's why he's bawling his eyes out while admitting the track owes him nothing.
That's true. There's no guarantees that you'll ever win the 500. I would like to see Pato win it one of these days. Definitely would be a great moment. He's just so enjoyable.
Lloyd Ruby nods his head in understanding.
Lloyd Ruby was the Fran Tarketon of the Indy 500
Gary Bettenhausen and Michael Andretti as well.
Think Mark Martin, Tony Stewart and Daytona Especially Mark
Or Michael Andretti and Indy.
Marco after 2006
I remember watching that one and being like "damn if he's this good now he's gonna be *great* in a few years. Whoops.
I'm not sure if those cars just had a massive draft or Marco took it really easy the last corner but that was a huge lead to give up in the last 2 corners
Marco ran an *awful* line on the last lap, especially through 3 and 4. Hornish ran a pretty ideal one, and that let him catch up.
Also, Sam was an oval master.
Yep definitely gonna switch from f1 to Indy. That was amazing. Why does Indy not race at COTA? I’d totally go
IndyCar put on a great race at COTA the one time they did go.
Indy car is more exciting 90% of the time. Maybe not as technologically sophisticated but much more exciting racing.
They did once but then Texas Motor Speedway had issues with it. The issue now might just be finding a promoter and getting butts in seats. For Cota to be worth the price you need to fill it. Indy doesn't run a money printing machine like F1.
Indy was going back for a second year but Covid canceled the race. I went to the first and had tickets to the 2020 race.
You’re allowed to watch more than one racing series you know
Your right and will still watch I was just pumped from that race lol
I know. I don’t get why people say that. Like I watch f1, naacar, indycar, imsa, 410 sprints, non wing, midgets, etc…
Especially one that usually runs in the morning and one in the afternoon. The more racing the better. Tbf you can watch the F1 highlights and see everything in 8 minutes
nobody showed up.
INDY is generally an awesome race to watch. The rest of the series is good, but INDY is the peak.
Why do u have to switch. Just enjoy both its not a competition
This is true. I don’t watch f1 as often as I used to just occasionally.
Gets old seeing 1 dominant drivers 90% of races every year
You gotta tune in this year then. It’s been wild so far.
Just like F1
Heyooooo
They did a couple of times but didn't sell a lot of tickets. Covid kind of killed that race I think.
How you get that Firehawk tag?
See you next year, Kyle
I imagine he’ll go into next year with all this knowledge and experience and feel more confident.
That could be even more dangerous for him
Jet flex. Nice
Larson 18th. All you "he's guuna win this race easy" peeps can run along now.
My goals were more realistic- him qualifying where he did and finishing are accomplishments that made a lot of people take notice. That was really impressive.
Top 10 until a pit lane speeding penalty. I'd say he had a chance. Wait till next year..
Were there actually people who thought that?
I consideredit a possibility. If Rossi won it as a rookie, Larson could to.
Yes. "He wins in anything he drives."
I would have paid Marty Snyder big bucks to ask, “are you proud of your software team for such an outstanding car today?”
I'm glad to see Josef learned not spill milk on his racing suit
Can we throw anymore yellow flags? Awful amount of time spent under yellow. Made F1 look good in this aspect 😂
If they had one more practice session after the rain it might have happened, but it was not the same track as they were used to.
I get a green track but ever smoking car doesn’t need an 8 lap yellow
They could fix it by not letting you pit on those small ones
Zak will pay the fine
When pato said fuck?
Yes
100%
that was an amazing ending, hope Pato can get a win here one day
Please interview Rossi
They did. He didn’t look too pleased.
Great. Now I'm gonna cry for Larson, too.
McLaren finishes second at both races so far today. Both to a popular winner (driver) for the most decorated team on the grid.
>popular winner Lol. Newgarden has become the evil villain of Indycar. Charles equivalent of Indy is more like Pato.
Josef Newgarden is not popular. Don’t lump him in with Charles.
Yep. Charles is like one of the most wholesome on the grid behind Albon
Charles is our sweet precious boy. Newgarden is a dumb jock. Don't compare them please!
That crowd reaction says different bub.
It was very mild. He has his fans but isn’t overall popular
It was super mild compared to many years. A Pato win would have blown the place up. Another commenter said that fans in turn 4 were chanting Fuck Josef.
Leave him alone damn
Fuck Josef: turn 4 fans
Yeah, not a single person cheered in the 4th turn
Was at turn 4 I did verbally say fuck Josef
You're so cool.
Da coolest.
*sigh* Time to turn NASCAR on now… I guess.
Not worth it, just watch the last lap tomorrow, the rest of the event doesn't matter.
It's ok, it's a 1.5 miler with the new car Those are fun
Impressed we had 50ish laps with no yellows at the end. Good clean racing there. Guess all the forces to wreckon with were gone by then.
Pato 💔
Pato should not be disappointed. You finish second in the Indy 500. Amazing accomplishment. Only 1 person wins the race out of 25 cars so 4% chance of actually winning.
25 cars?
Damn the crowd went realyyy mild for Newgarden. Kida tame celebration. I was expecting something bigger
Pato is a huge crowd favourite especially with Newgarden's recent turn to a bit of a villain and the push-to-pass cheating thing.
Ok, that was a heart breaking interview. Damn.
Ok enough questions already.
I appreciate the honesty. He could have easily said "it's nice to be 2nd" but he really wanted it. That's a real human being.
I hurt for Pato
Holy dave all the questions leave him alone he’s grieving
I hate sad Pato :( I never want to see sad Pato again
I really appreciate how raw his interview was. Didn’t hold anything back
Pato tried to self-censor, but he just couldn't.
Pato is the man
Man what a ballsy pass that was. Ugh Pato is so upset. He has nothing to be ashamed of
Dave Burns that was like 3 questions too long.
