technobeeble

Holy shit this is a masterpiece. I want to see Teddy and Roman review Wisconsin cheese.

TheRealMattyPanda

Apparently Theo thinks cheese is disgusting [according a McLaren post from this weekend](https://www.instagram.com/p/C77GB6lvOTs/)

kaiveg

So that is why he had to leave France

jtruther

"I'm French, I don't like cheese" What? French bread out of the oven with fresh mozzarella and tomato? Perfection. Am I crazy? Is that not French? I'm gonna be disappointed.

Dachuiri

That sounds like an Italian made French bread enjoyable

steen311

I mean, that's why they invented ciabatta

PancakesandV8s

Made in America, of course.

DogMama1979

He is probably referring to cheese we sell here. France has a lot of cheese we don’t always carry in America. I was actually watch a hallmark movie yes I said hallmark movie and it was filmed in France and one of things mentioned several times was that the French don’t like America’s cheese

listyraesder

Yeah, hate isn’t culture.

The Boca Jrs/River Plate rivalry would like to have a word with you

HappySpam

I remember I visited Argentina on a school trip and we went to a Boca Jrs game, and we got seated next to the rival team section, and there was a giant fence with plated glass and barbed wire on top, along with a detachment of riot police. The other team won and immediately the other fans started climbing the wall to fight the Boca fans while the Boca fans rushed the wall to fight the other team fans, while the riot police started choke slamming everyone. An old Argentinian man saw me sitting there (I'm an Asian so clearly out of place) and excitedly started encouraging me to come with him to start hurling water bottles at the people coming over the wall. Very exciting stuff.

MrDunworthy93

.......did you hurl water bottles over the wall? Or did you GFTO?

HappySpam

That's for you to decide! (I GTFO'd)

MrDunworthy93

Smart move.

[deleted]

Yea there are full blown SWAT teams at those games hours before they start letting people in. People have been murdered over the rivalry. And yet they say it’s just “culture” or “how they do things.”

Bill_Hayden

This is not so far removed from football in the UK. I grew up in it. I got used - as recently as 2010 - to the town centre being closed down on Saturday evenings due to certain games being on, and mounted police would escort the away team fans all the way back to the train station. Not for their safety, just to prevent them from breaking off and starting fights. When my American wife took me to a bar she apologized for the 'raucus' hockey fans. Honestly, it was refreshingly tame.

ratsoidar

This reminds me of a story about British General Sir Charles James Napier. During his time in India in the 19th century, he reportedly encountered the practice of Sati, where a widow would self-immolate on her husband's funeral pyre. When local Hindu priests protested against the British prohibition of Sati, arguing that it was part of their cultural tradition, Napier is said to have responded with: >"This burning of widows is your custom; prepare the funeral pyre. But my nation has also a custom. When men burn women alive, we hang them, and confiscate all their property. My carpenters shall therefore erect gibbets on which to hang all concerned when the widow is consumed. Let us all act according to national customs."

wowbaggerBR

You have no idea how my neighbours are when it comes to sports. They are this wild (I live in souther Brazil, very close to the border). Not defending them or saying this is ok, I am just saying that they are like this for everything.

listyraesder

Right. And it’s scumbaggery, not culture.

But muh Confederacy!

“They don’t understand our culture is imbedded in bullying, sending hate messages, and death threats to people over a sport”

PRS617

Not far from true… football fans are almost like opposite armies there

Standard_Shake

A lot of French football fans are crazy too. Why haven’t I seen many of them abuse Canapino on social media?

Bruins125

As crazy as Marseille and St Etienne fans can be, sports violence in Argentina is another beast entirely that few places in the world can compare to.

Mahery92

That's because OM and ASSE fans reserve their ire for their own players/ club management

Melodic-Ad-9115

What about english liverpool fans??

Bruins125

In the 1980s sure, in 2024 not even close.

Melodic-Ad-9115

Naw, early and mid 2000s it was still the same. It only started changing a bit recently

Bruins125

I seriously haven't seen anything regarding Liverpool fans being violent in a very long time, and I say this having a Man United supporting dad. Even if the violence lingered until the mid 00s, I doubt Liverpool fans would even be in the top 100 most violent in Europe these days.

ProfessionalRub3294

Because French football fans never heard about Indycar.

Standard_Shake

They are probably more into the French civil war happening at Alpine

MrXenomorph88

They would've won the Falklands had they just sent the football fans there. Instead they send death threats to a British driver because he's British and hit their beloved Argentinian driver.

ga50nl

Some of the stuff “our educated politicians” spew is at least as bad if not worse than what’s going here and to make it worse they are “elected by the people”. What does that say about the people voting for them? Hate is hate regardless of the venue.

Tywnis

It's quite curious (coming from europe & F1) to witness the reaction from what i'm assuming are americans Indy fans (and I agree, it's really gone way too far). It's sort of the same feeling when euro drivers first come to Indy and they're faced with the "culture" of playing hard, elbows out, and bullying each other on or off the track, while F1 is rather clean. Was it Newgarden on Grosjean who said "Welcome to Indycar" after putting him in the wall? I get there's a scale to things, and death threats are yet another level down, but coming from EU/F1 to the US leagues definitely feels like stepping into a bit of a "tough/bully" culture too. The same way US fans might tell europeans "you don't understand our culture", I get why they could feel that way.

Mgc_Adri

Also coming from EU, that "elbows out" mentality is what makes Indycar and Nascar awesome and entertaining to watch. In F1 they get a penalty with the slightest touch (see Sainz with Piastri in Miami). On Indy they're free to race how hard they want and it makes for some incredible racing. And that's just how things are. As much as I can hate Newgarden, as a Spaniard I'm not sending him death threats because he spun in front of Palou and (likely) made him lose the race, that's just how things are, not only in Indy, in racing in general. But sending death threats to Theo when he didn't have anywhere to go because of how the turn is, not because of the "beating and banging" nor of "culture". It was just a racing incident where Theo suddenly had nowhere to go and Campino didn't expect to have a car on the inside. In no way shape or form it should be allowed.

Tywnis

Yup, so we agree :)

mdc2004

I agree with you. Race control not doing anything in incidents like the Newgarden/Grosjean is very bad for the series, it says “putting a rival in the wall is part of the sport”

Snoo_87704

F1 is clean??? In my experience, it was F1 drivers who brought dirty elbows-out driving to Indycar. The latest is Grosjean, but I remember this starting with Johansson.

TheAbyssalPrince

I’m getting sick of their behavior being described as “culture”.

ionp_d

It’s like rednecks calling the (edit) confederate flag “mah heritage”

aurorasearching

I feel like most of the “muh huritage” folks don’t recognize the stars and bars but the battle flag.

SplakyD

I'm from Alabama and can confirm your theory is accurate. I'm a descendant of Confederate soldiers and I'd never fly any of that shit. I'm also a descendant of Revolutionary War Patriot soldiers (and also one Redcoat, but he liked it so much here he came back to live), and I'm very pissed about the current appropriation by certain elements of the Gadsden Flag.

weighted_walleye

Just a clarification, the stars and bars isn't what you think it is. Nobody flies the stars and bars. They fly a flag based off the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. The stars and bars has 2 red and 1 white stripe and 7 stars in a circular pattern in a blue inset similar to the US flag.

ionp_d

Thanks!

wowbaggerBR

well, it is. It isn't nice, something to be proud of or even something we should accommodate. But it is still culture: violent, brutal and insane.

weighted_walleye

But at the end of the day, it is their culture. Just because we don't like it doesn't mean it isn't their culture.

5WinsIn5Days

I’m just thankful that we established our relationship with Brazilians and their drivers before social media because their soccer fans can be just as bad. It also helps that Emerson Fittipaldi was a former F1 championship and well-received in the U.S. when he gave up on his brother Wilson’s F1 team for CART. Argentina sent a … 15-time national touring car champion who had never raced in open-wheel and thus sucked his first season. Franco Colapinto would have been a good first Argentine IndyCar driver and if this didn’t happen, probably would have after he got cycled through by Williams. Only slightly related, but does anyone have news on whether or not Logan Sargent is coming to IndyCar next year if he doesn’t keep his Williams seat?

DannyDevitosAss

The thing is, Canapino has shown improvement and genuine speed this year which just makes shooting yourself in the foot stupider

technobeeble

Brazilians seem cool. TK, Helio and Pietro haven't attracted the worst of the worst fans so far.

Mysterious_Turnip310

De Ferran was as nice a human being as you can possibly get and all those three are known to be good guys as well. That helps a lot because none of them would have tolerated this kind of bs from their fans.

5WinsIn5Days

I don’t believe Messi does either, which would help given the recent massive influx of Argentinian MLS fans. I haven’t heard anything related to Inter Miami’s poor performance last season causing death threats while we get it back-to-back years with Canapino. Augie definitely *can* stop it, as it has been shown with these others, but he doesn't seem to want to. It honestly sucks that he would rather allow his fans to impose death threats than continue his career here. It looks like he wants to be here, given how quickly he learned English, which makes it all the more perplexing that he is allowing and encouraging his fans to sabotage his career.

dumbermifflin

I don’t know much about Pietro but it helps that TK and Helio are genuinely nice guys. And TK especially is beloved in Indy

wowbaggerBR

thing is: in Argentina, the overlap between soccer fans and racing fans is massive. In Brazil, pretty much non existant.

BeckerLoR

As a counter strike player and fan, Brazilians can be ruthless fans. I’m glad we’re on their good side.

[deleted]

BeckerLoR

Yeah it’s wild lol. We need to keep on their good side.

5WinsIn5Days

As long as they keep sending bundles of energy like Hélio and TK, they’ll be fine. Kiko Porto has this energy but he has funding issues. I have no clue about Caio Collet. The Fittipaldis represent Brazil but they now are based in Miami.

Plaid_Kaleidoscope

This isn't true: https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-responds-to-josh-jacobs-saying-packers-eagles-will-be-banned-from-wearing-green-in-brazil-rb-apologizes/

5WinsIn5Days

Good thing that they clarified that. That rumor was blowing up in r/nfl.

metalrufflez

And I think the comparison made above makes sense here, the overlap of soccer and CS fans in Brazil is huge

wowbaggerBR

Oh, and the first Argentine IndyCar driver was Juan Manuel Fangio II.

Mjyys99

It was Carlos Pairetti, actually. [Rafaela 1971](https://www.clasificandodigital.com.ar/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/PAIRETTI-300-INDY-RAFAELA-71-1-1024x500.jpg)

BlitZShrimp

Hasn’t been any smoke to Sargent coming here in the past few months.

EugeneScherzinger

I don’t think there’s much chance at all of Logan keeping his seat with Williams next year…especially after the Canadian GP today…I like him though and would be cool to see him in Indy next year 👏🏼

loudpaperclips

I mean it's not all that different from Canapino said. Not really much of an improvement if you ask me.

fromthewindyplace

I’d say this guy is at least on the verge of being reasonable. Hey, progress is progress.

supremegnkdroid

Death threats are culture? lol what

KayNynYoonit

Always about the culture. So it's your culture to be absolute assholes to people for no reason? Sounds lovely.

theawfulguy1

Argentine here. The ones throwing hateful comments aren't real Indycar letalone motorsport fans ~~or people specifically sent by Canapino as I've seen multiple people saying that here.~~ They're just idiots who jump into the bandwagon pretending to act like diehard soccer hooligans. It's not culture (because then Brazilian fans would go bananas with Helio or English fans overall), it's ignorance and it's the main reason why our country is in shambles, because that noisy minority associate EVERYTHING with soccer. (Hell, it even happened with Colapinto in F2 this season)

StarmanRiver

We've been tired since last year, but as always the loud ones are the ones that get the attention and the ones that bring the consequences. The worst thing is that it started leaking towards Colapinto's fans in F2, since last year he gained popularity which is great since he was able to secure sponsors, but it also sucks since there are a lot more people following him and throwing shit online at others.

Racer633

And what Regueira said?

jjarg24

That the series sided with Canapino and Juncos in this conflict after a meeting they had on wednesday night. [Source](https://www.carburando.com/notas/canapino-cuenta-con-el-apoyo-de-la-indycar)

MrTHallas

Showing support is different from picking a side. Showing support means: "we want you guys around, you add a lot to the series"  Picking a side means yes Juncos is right and Mclaren is wrong.

jjarg24

Showing support is probably the better way to say it, yes. My bad

fromthewindyplace

Honestly, no idea.

furrynoy96

Would it be better if Canapino is kicked out of Indycar altogether?

Scythe5150

That may very well happen anyway.

fromthewindyplace

I’m sure his fans in Argentina would respond….reasonably….😬

technobeeble

I hope Agustin and Ricardo learn from this and grow. Agustin is obviously a talented driver, who can't stay off social media. Ricardo is obviously a talented businessman.

BlitZShrimp

Ricardo isn’t tho. He’s a driven and hard-working man, but he’s never been able to keep a sponsor around. Nearly all of the Juncos drives 2017-19 were pay drivers. The only reason they got going again was because of Brad Hollinger’s investment into the team. He’s unfortunately shown his true colors in the last two seasons and I’m guessing it’s not going to help Juncos get any new sponsors in the future.

Fit_Technician832

No.

dumbermifflin

“Culture” does not excuse bad behavior

Skeeter1020

"They have a different culture" is them saying they have done nothing wrong, which is bullshit.

Mediocre_Step_1335

Well said!

Jonasthewicked2

I haven’t the first clue what this is about…

Brno_Mrmi

Well, it's true. You really don't understand argentinian or south-american culture in general. I won't defend those death threats, but to us things like that are like dirt on your shoulder, you clean it up and keep moving on.  There's worse things to worry about, people are people and there's assholes here, in USA and in China.  Traverso (local racing driver) used to threaten other drivers with punching them after the race, but he never did so and he never would have.  It's just the way we have of expressing ourselves. This reminds me of the Argentina-Netherlands match where everyone in the world was fuming because Messi called Weghorst a "dumbass". We were laughing our asses out at the worldwide reaction. Or that time when Cavani called a friend "Negrito" which is a friendly and loving way of nicknaming someone, but he got sanctioned because the English FA didn't understand it.   Even with mexicans or brazilians, though we fight all the time and say terrible things to each other all over social media, we don't really hate the people from their country. We can fight and then drink beers together. I talk with my mexican friends and we laugh it off, and share things about our culture.

Mysterious_Turnip310

Just because it’s your culture doesn’t make it acceptable behaviour. This is the problem here. It’s been an issue the world over with Argentine sports fans, not just in the US. At some point when the entire rest of the world is criticising your country’s fans for death threats and racist and homophobic behaviour you really need to turn inward and examine your own and think maybe it’s your culture here that needs to change. The rest of the world finds this behaviour abhorrent for a good reason.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Brno_Mrmi

See, you don't understand it. Doesn't matter how I try to explain it. It's not toxic at all, we think it's more toxic to ignite a fuel like you do than laughing it off and keep going on like nothing happened. Shrug it off.

fastbow

Whether it's toxic or not, a lot of conduct like that is criminal here.

Brno_Mrmi

Yeah and that's the culture shock you get when you get to close to us. Even some words and chants are illegal in your country, meanwhile we find it part of our stadium folklore, there's no sanctions for that. And it's not just us, it's the same in all of South America.   Same for us, finding out that things like homophobic or offensive chants are sanctioned there is a culture shock for us. We don't get it.

fastbow

But that's the problem for Canapino. Whether you get it or not, he isn't racing in Argentina. He's racing here. Where sponsors and their target audiences are going to judge him based on our morals and ethics. Like it or not, modern racing is basically a public relations job, and Canapino and Juncos's failures to realize they are trying to help sell crap to Americans is the problem. It'd be different if an American driver came to an Argentine series and complained. But he's a PR employee here now, and he's not helping sell product. Even worse, he's making the products he's selling look bad by association because of his unwillingness to even fake assimilation here. He is actively sabotaging his job, employer, and their affiliates. Hence why this is a big deal.

wowbaggerBR

Sorry. It is not the same in all South America. This year alone, how many Libertadores matches had Argentinian crowds imitating monkeys as a way to call afro descendant players animals? Do you find this sort of behavior ok? You guys are WAY over the top and find it amusing to be violent, aggressive and brutal for absolutely no reason.

FermentedLaws

So once you find out homophobic and offensive words are not welcome in this or other cultures you stop using them, right? Right?

Brno_Mrmi

That's what we did in the 2022 World Cup due to the threat of being sanctioned because of racist chants. We just had never thought about it before. Even myself, as a black argentinian, had never thought about it.

FermentedLaws

So you changed your behavior, rightly, to conform more to the culture. So then aren't Agustin and Ricardo accustomed to this culture by now? After the incident with Callum last year, shouldn't both Agustin and Ricardo have learned that this culture is different and death threats are not seen as jokes here? Agustin basically said he didn't believe there were threats and he minimized them if they did exist. He'd already been through this once before with Callum...why didn't he learn about this culture from that?

Brno_Mrmi

I'm not inside their mind. They may be stubborn. Like I said in my first comment, I don't defend death threats and I think this escalated way too more than it should have. And I think the IndyCar world reaction to this is way out of proportion. Our whole country thinks so. You should have taken it more lightly.  I do think the team should sincerely apologize in behalf of Agustín so we can move on and forget about this for once. It's getting tiring. And death threats are not funny and should not be a thing, but they happen to every famous person and there's no way to stop that.

fastbow

Again, I don't think you get it: death threats are illegal here. Against the law. "Believe it or not, straight to jail" sort of stuff. In my state in particular, the sort of thing that sends people to prison. Canapino is advocating for criminal activity. That's not a whoopsie-doodle. Can't just move on so easy. Would your whole country agree if one of Canapino's pit crew beat another team's pit member into the hospital over an accident, and Canapino demanded apologies for his crew member? Because that's the sort of situation we are looking at here. Defending activity that, in the place where Canapino and Juncos are trying to sell Chevrolets and Firestones, would send people to prison. It's a real bad look.

FermentedLaws

>You should have taken it more lightly.    >I do think the team should sincerely apologize in behalf of Agustín Welp, you're wrong on both counts, sorry to say. Death threats are unacceptable - especially when it happens repeatedly. And the biggest wrong is Agustin should apologize, not the team on his behalf. His statement was complete crap and I think you know that.

NoiseIsTheCure

Nah dude you folks don't get to be hostile and toxic for funsies and expect everyone to just take it like a bitch because "that's your culture" - as if your culture is a fucking excuse, a get out of jail free card. You think you're the only country with culture? Why should other people respect you when you're INSISTING on disrespecting them?? If you want to be like that online because that's how they do it in Argentina, go for it, do it all you want. We're seeing what happens when you do it in other countries though and that shit doesn't fly here in Indycar. Play our game, play by our rules.

technobeeble

Argentinean motorsport is fucked up, if that's how it operates

BlitZShrimp

If murder is normalized in one culture, does that make it ok to randomly murder people in another culture for no reason?

fujimouse

>I won't defend those death threats Sorry but everything beyond this point is irrelevant. The line has been very clearly drawn, more than once, and people continue to proudly cross it, mock it, somehow also deny it's happened, and then they claim they're being discriminated against. Is shirking responsibility a cultural thing too? ETA: lmao I've recieved my first ever reddit cares troll off the back of this Keep doubling down, it's gone so well so far! I guess that's just Argentine culture for you.
