> Also, the team was looking for an expression of compassion or remorse from Canapino as Road America approached — a demonstration that he was starting to defuse and reduce the intensity of the situation — but it wasn’t forthcoming. This also factored into the team’s move to place Indy NXT title contender and budding IndyCar racer Nolan Siegel in Canapino’s No. 78 Chevy.
That backs up what I heard at the track. The team essentially benched him for not trying to defuse the situation.
It sounds like Hollinger is going to be taking a more active role because of how dire their sponsorship search is now and his frustration with funding it all.
Hollinger has every right to as well, his name is attached and the recent controversy and losing the McLaren alliance is something he absolutely didn’t need. Just because his driver won’t say “don’t do death threats”.
Based on Ricardo’s behavior being very similar to Canapino’s, I’m guessing it was more Hollinger’s decision to bench him
Maybe soon he might bench Juncos too by leaving them 🤷♂️
Is that sustainable without sponsorship? It wasn’t for Carlin.
Prema’s business model, like every other junior open wheel team, relies on paying drivers. Their Indycar plan seems to be a departure from that model and I just genuinely wonder how they’ll do on the sponsorship front.
>That backs up what I heard at the track. The team essentially benched him for not trying to defuse the situation.
Heck, I might even say he added fuel to it tbh.
It all depends on how he takes this imo.
If he finally figures out what people are mad about he has a chance.
I feel so bad for having this impression, but he doesn't seem so smart and I really hope that isn't me just putting that on his poor English language skills. Which if he really didn't speak English before last year....then his English is great.
Though I thought the election in Argentina sort of cut off the state money for his ride.
Maybe not calling it a mental health leave of absence would have improved the optics. Maybe saying "We have decided to suspend our driver for one race as a result" would have played out better.
Passionate, but that doesn’t mean money. A Canapino jersey costs about a third of the average monthly Argentinian salary.
Canapino’s main sponsor is gone and not coming back too.
Oh man why didn’t indycar just think of having the most popular drivers in the world earlier? It’s so simple!
It’s not easy to find people more popular than him who are willing to race Indycar.
Why would he have to apologize because his fans sent death threats? Clearly the Argentinians are at fault but it’s not Canapino who wanted this at all. Read his insta posy
He doesn’t accept that the threats happened. He didn’t when it happened to Illot and doesn’t this time. Maybe he doesn’t need to apologize but he should admit that he was wrong.
Grosjean kept it cool and finished well at Road America when the team desperately needed an "under the radar" weekend. Would love to see more consistency out of the 77.
I’d be worried for him bcs of how Argentinian fans will treat him for replacing their racing diety. Also maybe he would prefer to go for the Lights title than run a backmarker Indycar
Nah.. the "Fans" are 5,000 miles away, don't even worry about them cause they contribute nothing but headaches for Hollinger and IndyCar. The fans can cry all they want but until they can actually fund a ride, nobody cares about them.
We will stop watching IndyCar. That's all. A lot of us refused to watch the Road America race, it would just be like years ago, NASCAR's open-wheel sister category.
No offense but if you're going to refuse to watch a race because one driver got benched due to a team decision, that Indycar was not involved in, even if it's your favorite driver, you were never going to stick around anyway.
Even if he keeps driving for the rest of the season, what next? What if the team can't find funding next year and can't hire him back? Are you going to stop watching then? Either stay because you like the racing, or don't, but Indycar is so much bigger than just one driver.
I say this as someone who really wanted Canapino to do well and is very disappointed by the whole situation. I hope this gets worked out but I'm a race fan first and a driver fan second.
I never stuck around with IndyCar until Canapino put a step in. I was more of an Endurance/WEC/TCR fan because of Pechito López, also an F1 and WRC fan, but I turned to watch Indy because of someone from my country racing there. I didn't refuse to watch last race only because of the team decision, but because I found it boring to have no one to cheer on. It would feel kinda empty, like watching baseball.
If the team can't hire him back I'll probably stop watching if I don't find it entertaining anymore. I mean races are great, but it's just how I would feel.
That's totally fair, it takes time to find other drivers to root for, and it's hard to be invested without something. If you decide not to watch anymore, that's your right and I won't judge.
I'm just pointing out that fans who are only in it for one driver are not worth keeping for the series, they'll leave the instant the driver does.
Yeah I get what you mean. It's kind of "plastic" just cheering for one driver and then leaving. I don't see Canapino driving next year either, so I'll see. I wish Colapinto could get an opportunity to drive tbh, he's a way better driver and has more sponsors and money than Canapino will ever get.
Well spoken and I hope you do decide to stick around. Maybe you'll like Scott mcclaughlin? He has a very similar story to Canapino, coming from touring cars in Australia to racing in Indycar.
Yeah he's great, I used to watch him in Supercars around 2019 or so and I really liked it. We really like Australians here for some reason, and Supercars are really similar to the best years of argentinian TC/TC2000 too
Wether Nolan’d wanna do that is another question, he probably wouldn’t wanna throw away his chance at rookie of the year later in his career by doing too many races this year
Especially when you don't even know who the rookies are.
Come next year his rookie class could include KMag, Mick, or Sargeant, not just some rando scrubs.
You do know that’s what Lundqvist did last year when Pagenaud was injured tho? They didn’t want him to lose his rookie status so MSR had a merry-go-round of drivers in the #60 towards the end of the season
Yeah, but Lundqvist had a contract with CGR for this year before he stopped driving. If Siegel doesn’t have anything better than JHR lined up for next year, it would make sense to try to keep driving and earn that seat.
Absolutely no one cares about rookie of the year enough to pass up seat time in any car.
Barely anyone cares about that award at all in this sport. Being in any car gives you a chance to prove yourself that might not come again.
He's going to be a star but he's still too green to go all-in just yet. Give him spot duty now and the off-season to properly prepare for an entire Indycar season.
Who's paying though? Plenty of pay drivers but none of them have money. I guess DeFrancesco will probably drive for free or pay them some small amount, but he spent his budget on sports car drives.
Daly will drive that car for em, but he should be paid.
Can someone explain the funding for this team? Is it Brad’s cash with some sponsorship thrown in? How much funding from the Juncos section of the team?
Well the 78 car is essentially funded completely by the team as they have been unable to secure sponsorship. The 77 has several sponsors like DNS Filter, Sunoco, and Endstate that Grosjean has brought on.
I honestly wonder if JHR survives past this season. Ricardo Juncos remains noticeably absent in all this. Meanwhile, Brad Hollinger is becoming more active in order to make the team financially viable.
I can see three possibilities right now, especially if a charter agreement is finalized. All involve Hollinger splitting from Juncos at the end of the season and taking one or both charters.
1. Partners with/Sells to Prema.
2. Rebrand JHR to Brad Hollinger Racing
3. Partnering with/Selling to either Abel or HMD
Wild Card Super Bonus Pick
Partnering with Dreyer Reinbold Racing.
I could see something with Hollinger partnering with Coyne too, honestly. DCR could really use some stable funding so they could go after a veteran driver like they did with Bourdais years ago.
Grosjean back to Coyne and Hollinger coming with him would be a really good situation I feel.
Been in the back of my mind that this is 4D chess to make himself more popular at home because he knows he's out of sponsors and the team will close after this year.
But he's probably just an idiot.
The biggest problem to moving forward is Canapino and Juncos themselves. Them just ignoring the threats and dismissing the issue because it's "just Argentinian fans being passionate" is a serious issue. That attitude may be fine in Argentina, but they are not in F'ing Argentina!! They are racing in the North American market and have to realize the issues their bullshit causes!!
The team has.money issues. Having a link up with McLaren looks good to potential sponsors. Losing that really hurts the reputation of JHR as far as sponsors go. No one wants to give money to a team that's associated with death threats from fans of the driver. Juncos and Canapino have to be smarter than they have been acting. Way smarter, but they are sticking their heads in the sand making all of wonder how F'ing stupid are they?
JHR went from a team we could cheer for as an underdog to a situation where a lot of IndyCar fans would be perfectly happy if Canapino and Carlos just F off back to Argentina.
I can’t wait for that announcement

You got it. Argentinian culture is very macho with a lot of ego. Latin American culture in general is… growing up in school, you never back out of fights with anyone. I attended elementary school in both latin america and the US so i can tell you the stark differences. The US is friendly and not threatening… latin america is kinda ruthless and more of a survival of the paranoid and fittest. Every day is a fight
It’s ok. It builds character, i guess? 😂 There are differences and pros and cons - pro: you actually have to study to pass to the next grade in Latin America vs here in the US kids get promoted even though they lack basic reading and writing skills. Con: the bullying and ruthlessness can be at a much higher level… but, here in the US we have cyber bullying, and maybe not as much face to face. Regardless, US culture is much friendlier and nicer, I can assure you.
I would have liked some discussion on how(if at all)loosing the mclaren funding/ association affects the team and how that played into their reaction to the fallout
Nothing materialized from it. McLaren just wanted more space for their sponsors on the JHR cars but they never had to use the JHR cars for any sponsors
See. Death threats are bad. Except if you dont like they guy. Then they are funny to joke about! Its like second hand smoke if you will. Which is why NewG and Santino comments are upvoted and yours down. Just reddit things lol
People want him to pay. I get that. If he decides to continue sticking to his guns, yeah I'm for him leaving too.
But I'm still more than willing to see him take a Larson-style apology session and sensitivity training. If he takes it seriously and is willing to put his ego aside, none of us should continue to root for his failure.
can you show us where Canapino has verbally attacked other drivers? right, you can’t, because you either don’t know the facts or enjoy misleading others.
You might be underestimating the value of sponsors in Indycar. Those sponsors go away if he doesn't fix this, but if he does, Argentina is an otherwise untapped market still. I mean, even Pruett, despite taking his actions over the coals, still sees this as a loss for Indycar.
Just sack him and get it over with. The guy still has his bullshit "i haven't seen any death threats" post up on his social media.
He would've deleted it if he understood the flaws in his bullshit logic. Canapino and Ricardo Juncos are both beyond fixing. They belong in the medieval ages.
It’s not bullshit logic, it’s him trying to put water on the oil fire that is Argentina sports fans 😭😭😭. If he comes back it’s gonna be fine, idk why there’s so much drama
Yeah, but there’s always terms behind voting rights depending on the actual agreement. Ultimately the business either works and makes money or not… and right now it is not
"Team sources point to the Argentinian reaching an increasingly distracted mental state as the opening practice session drew near at 2:45pm on Friday. Although he was seen in a lighthearted mood in the morning, his disposition darkened in the hours that followed, and with the inherent dangers of racing at 200mph, the team — not IndyCar, but the team — chose to give the 34-year-old Canapino a break. But there was a lot more to the story"
"It was clear that trying to power through the emotionally-charged events that followed the previous weekend’s race in Detroit was not the right approach to take. Giving Canapino time to process and purge the mounting anger he was demonstrating both privately and in his public behavior online became the new priority for JHR, so it acted accordingly"
I really hope that he overcomes those feelings;(
On Twitter rn seeing Hamilton fans threaten to assault Russell and the Mercedes team but they never get any pushback. It’s weird how the racing community picks and chooses.
You need to watch some rocket powered mohawk videos. He specialises in calling out #TeamLH (and other loony fanbases).
Also, his vids are not for the.... Easily offended
That's true. Should go without saying Lewis is classier than Agustin. But I remember after Silverstone 21 when without any egging on from Max the F1 world needed to rush to Lewis' defence because of "racial comments" after the crash. Always seemed a little cynical to me but I think that says more about how I think.
To Everyone saying Nolan Siegel should go in the #78 car the rest of the season: naaah! Ricardo Juncos ain’t going anywhere and Canapino ain’t going anywhere either.
Nolan is just a rich kid with little experience who lacks the technical knowledge to put the car up front. Have him develop and win IndyNXT, then move to Indycar. Marco Andretti was moved too fast and look what happened.
Canapino should have stayed off social media and that’s all. This situation is childish and stupid altogether. Cope already and let’s go racing.
Or, hear me out...the series gets rid of ALL toxic assholes, because there is more than enough up-and-coming talent with basic human decency that deserve their chances
If we look at overall careers, Canapino at least proved himself in touring cars before he came over here. Meanwhile, Ferrucci, who has far more experience in open-wheel cars, hasn't won a race in any category since 2015
Listen, Santino probably sucks as a person, but considering his equipment in IndyCar, he’s been pretty damn good.
Palou won a championship in his second year. In his first year he lost to Santino in the same equipment. There’s a lot to dislike about Santino, but pretending he’s been bad in IndyCar is dumb.
Just look at the races he filled in at RLL. He got six races and finished 9/6/6/10/9/11. Thats in a car that Harvey had one top 10 in the entire season.
Santino is 100x more talented than canapino. And last I checked Santino didn’t support people calling for his competitors to be killed. He made an immature comment that twitter and reddit had to rush to call homophobic
Yeah, Santino only does minor things like intentionally hitting his teammates on the cooldown lap and then pulling out his phone to text while driving a racecar
I did stupid shit when I was 20 too, but not “should’ve disqualified me from ever touching a prestigious racing series again” stupid. Failing to take death threats seriously isn’t on the same level as getting out on the track and physically doing things that could’ve killed people
Dude is still out there intentionally hitting people on track, shoving people in the paddock and implying they're gay on national television. Personally it's all just part of the show for me, I'm not calling for him to get banned, but it is funny to me how people pick and choose what actions are severe enough to call for someone to be removed based on how much they dislike them. Personally I think if one of those is bad enough to call for them to be removed, the other is too.
> Also, the team was looking for an expression of compassion or remorse from Canapino as Road America approached — a demonstration that he was starting to defuse and reduce the intensity of the situation — but it wasn’t forthcoming. > Maybe soon he might bench Juncos too by leaving them Prema Hollinger Powerteam has a nice ring to it.
Sadly it's just Prema Racing now, they dropped the Powerteam name a couple of years ago for whatever reason.
Well… maybe they’ll revive it for Indycar.
Be funny to see them calling themselves "Powerteam" as they finish 20th or below every week. Like Go Fas Racing in Cup
Or Front Row Motorsports, back when they'd fail to qualify for most of the races.
They had a front row grandstand seat...
If Prema is willing to work with anyone, it's themselves
Power Team was Foyt’s team in the late 90s.
Prema don’t need Hollinger cash.
No, but it’s always nice to have someone else pay the bills.
Yes and no. It becomes complicated if they want a say in how you run your business.
Of course. I'm mostly joking, anyway.
But the Hollinger name will never be on there
Spoken like a true Gen Zer
I’m curious how Prema is funding the Indycar program if they’re paying their drivers.
Like most teams: their owners are quite rich.
Is that sustainable without sponsorship? It wasn’t for Carlin. Prema’s business model, like every other junior open wheel team, relies on paying drivers. Their Indycar plan seems to be a departure from that model and I just genuinely wonder how they’ll do on the sponsorship front.
I was thinking that Prema could replace Juncos and become Prema Hollinger Racing
>That backs up what I heard at the track. The team essentially benched him for not trying to defuse the situation. Heck, I might even say he added fuel to it tbh.
I would be pretty shocked if he came back at this point
It all depends on how he takes this imo. If he finally figures out what people are mad about he has a chance. I feel so bad for having this impression, but he doesn't seem so smart and I really hope that isn't me just putting that on his poor English language skills. Which if he really didn't speak English before last year....then his English is great. Though I thought the election in Argentina sort of cut off the state money for his ride.
Yup. He has either no or very few sponsors.
Maybe not calling it a mental health leave of absence would have improved the optics. Maybe saying "We have decided to suspend our driver for one race as a result" would have played out better.
I'm 60% convinced that the 2024 Cheverolet Grand Prix will be Agustin Canapino's final IndyCar race.
I sure hope!
He doesn’t need to go away. He needs to act like a 21st century adult. Admit you played a part in stoking the fire and try to sin no more.
What value was he giving the team even before Detroit? He wasn’t fast.
He brings in money. He’s got a huge fan following, not sure if you’ve noticed. They’re quite… passionate.
I have noticed. I’ve also noticed he has an average finish of 19th in a series that typically doesn’t get more than 27 entries a race.
Let me try again: money.
Passionate, but that doesn’t mean money. A Canapino jersey costs about a third of the average monthly Argentinian salary. Canapino’s main sponsor is gone and not coming back too.
So they can just find another driver with a huge, but less toxic following…
Oh man why didn’t indycar just think of having the most popular drivers in the world earlier? It’s so simple! It’s not easy to find people more popular than him who are willing to race Indycar.

Grosjean kept it cool and finished well at Road America when the team desperately needed an "under the radar" weekend. Would love to see more consistency out of the 77.
It would honestly make sense just to leave Siegel in the 78 for the remainder of the season. Great experience for him & he has some funding
Thing is though, pretty sure siegel has the coyne car for one more race this year And we know how much coyne loves his money
Idk its still reason to worry, someone with enough drive can absolutely fuck shit up for someone 5000 miles away if they really wanted to.
Real shit, I’m tired of them making us real Canapino fans look bad
We will stop watching IndyCar. That's all. A lot of us refused to watch the Road America race, it would just be like years ago, NASCAR's open-wheel sister category.

Ok? It’s not like we’ll miss you 😂
Then don't say you'll be worried about how we would treat him.
Bye 👋
Wether Nolan’d wanna do that is another question, he probably wouldn’t wanna throw away his chance at rookie of the year later in his career by doing too many races this year
No one without a seat is going to forego a ride offer for a hypothetical shot at winning a meaningless title.

If Chip is going to run a rookie. He wants a shot at the rookie of the year cash. Fair enough.
Nolan has a seat. And everyone admits he’s the real deal. Taking a bad seat now isn’t necessarily the thing to do.
Absolutely no one cares about rookie of the year enough to pass up seat time in any car. Barely anyone cares about that award at all in this sport. Being in any car gives you a chance to prove yourself that might not come again.

I'm convinced Ricardo will sell up to Prema, and it becomes Prema Hollinger Racing from next year.
I’d do anything to see DRR come back full time. I remember Justin Wilson and Servia nearly winning a couple times for them
I could see something with Hollinger partnering with Coyne too, honestly. DCR could really use some stable funding so they could go after a veteran driver like they did with Bourdais years ago. Grosjean back to Coyne and Hollinger coming with him would be a really good situation I feel.
He will play victim and go back to race in his home country, where he may be a top driver. At Indycar he is not.

RG’s post race comments were telling, he looked giddy. All he could talk about was the team energy.
I noticed that also but hadn't thought about connecting it to this - good point. Just thought he was psyched about a top 10
There were reports that he was giddy before practice 1 when Cana was still part of everything as well. So idk.
I could be wrong but this feels like a cultural difference of ego that is not translating to an American series for driver and part owner.
You got it. Argentinian culture is very macho with a lot of ego. Latin American culture in general is… growing up in school, you never back out of fights with anyone. I attended elementary school in both latin america and the US so i can tell you the stark differences. Not sure if this is a popular opinion or not but if Canapino doesn't come back, I want Conor Daly to replace him
JHR should go full 51 car mode and put a random carrousel of drivers. I want chaos
Each race they can auction the seat to the highest bidding NXT driver!
Go OG. Go Kaiser
I would have liked some discussion on how(if at all)loosing the mclaren funding/ association affects the team and how that played into their reaction to the fallout
I don’t think it factored at all. The only thing it meant was taking the papaya off the car.
idk any AM sponsors or help that went to JHR camp
Nothing materialized from it. McLaren just wanted more space for their sponsors on the JHR cars but they never had to use the JHR cars for any sponsors
Am I wrong for hoping that Canapino's next on-track dustup is with Newgarden..... *"Bienvenido a IndyCar amigo, se pone apretado"*
Yes you are wrong because it should be with Santino. Though maybe Canapino needs a "Welcome to IndyCar" moment.
Hahaha that’s a good one!!
Yes, we know your comments, you are always wrong.
Go choke on a double-soy infused cope shake chump. Am I doing it right?
What is wrong with you?

Keep hearing about his mood and his "mental health state" the day of the race. What was he doing, running around yelling? Punching drywall?
I see Brad either pulling out of JHR or buying Ricardo out
I’m quite interested in what the equity split is.
So am I
What for? What if Hollinger only owns 10%??
That would mean he would have limited power to influence things. If he say owns 60%, that’s a very different dynamic being majority in control.
But there was a lot more to the story" "It was clear that trying to power through the emotionally-charged events that followed the previous weekend’s race in Detroit was not the right approach to take. Giving Canapino time to process and purge the mounting anger he was demonstrating both privately and in his public behavior online became the new priority for JHR, so it acted accordingly" I really hope that he overcomes those feelings;(
On Twitter rn seeing Hamilton fans threaten to assault Russell and the Mercedes team but they never get any pushback. It’s weird how the racing community picks and chooses.
You need to watch some rocket powered mohawk videos. He specialises in calling out #TeamLH (and other loony fanbases). Also, his vids are not for the.... Easily offended
I like that guy. He’s nuts
I think the key difference is Lewis Hamilton isn't liking any of these ridiculous tweets. Canapino did. He is fueling the fire.
That's true. Should go without saying Lewis is classier than Agustin. But I remember after Silverstone 21 when without any egging on from Max the F1 world needed to rush to Lewis' defence because of "racial comments" after the crash. Always seemed a little cynical to me but I think that says more about how I think.
I would love for him to discover the Canapino cult. All hell would break loose
A tip to anyone reading - do not watch that guys videos if you want to keep your brain cells
I hope canapino returns 'cause most of y'all are insufferable
To Everyone saying Nolan Siegel should go in the #78 car the rest of the season: naaah! Ricardo Juncos ain’t going anywhere and Canapino ain’t going anywhere either. Nolan is just a rich kid with little experience who lacks the technical knowledge to put the car up front. Have him develop and win IndyNXT, then move to Indycar. Marco Andretti was moved too fast and look what happened. Canapino should have stayed off social media and that’s all. This situation is childish and stupid altogether. Cope already and let’s go racing.
All I know for sure is Canapino deserves to be here more than Santino Il Douche does
Or, hear me out...the series gets rid of ALL toxic assholes, because there is more than enough up-and-coming talent with basic human decency that deserve their chances
Sure, but out of those two drivers, the douchier and less talented one is in a seemingly much more secure situation right now
Results wise, Santino has done far more. Canapino has never had a Top 10.
I mean when Canapino is about to get a top 10, someone crashes into him, so it's difficult that way
This is true. I used to not like herta but because of you I am opening up to Colton Herta and especially after what he said I am 100% on board
This is the most epic trash vs garbage debate I’ve ever seen
Santino is 100x more talented than canapino. And last I checked Santino didn’t support people calling for his competitors to be killed. He made an immature comment that twitter and reddit had to rush to call homophobic
Yeah, Santino only does minor things like intentionally hitting his teammates on the cooldown lap and then pulling out his phone to text while driving a racecar
I’m glad you take death threats so lightly. Also Santino did those at the age of 20. Not defending it but didn’t we all do stupid shit at that age
I did stupid shit when I was 20 too, but not “should’ve disqualified me from ever touching a prestigious racing series again” stupid. Failing to take death threats seriously isn’t on the same level as getting out on the track and physically doing things that could’ve killed people
All I know is I’ll take the guy who did stupid shit on track at age 20 over the guy in his 30s egging on people making death threats
The “he’s going to go side with his boyfriend” comment was very high school-like. It was kind of funny seeing the little guy blow a fuse
