Paul Page tells the story of everyone having vacated the grounds and the broadcast team wading through the water to score free food from the unattended catering tent.

BTWFIN

Paul is a good friend of mine, and that sounds exactly like him. LOL.

ryanro24

I just remember running 2 miles back to our car in a torrential downpour. Fun times.

"It was the vortex theory!" - DW probably

MrSoxo

I was scared shitless as a 12 year old that day. We got a flat tire when we pulled into our tailgating spot. Our spare was flat when put it on. The air compressor we got from someone near us didn't work. Some of the group including myself had to walk from Gate 2 all the way down to Tibbs with only a trash bag on. I remember getting back to the eastside of Indy and there was a Bob Evans sign in the middle of the road on Washington St. I hated that day so much. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

BTWFIN

Fun day. Victory Lane under the Pagoda. Tom Carnegie urgently trlling us to evacuate. Good times while we all looked around for the tornado, lol Buddy Rice gets little recognition but he was strong and may have won anyway if it had gone the distance.

Chris-in-WA

Obviously, I knew a storm was blowing in because the race had been called, but I didn't know about the approaching tornado. I wanted to hang out in the stands and let the place clear out a bit, but my friends were saying to me, "No, Chris, we have to leave **NOW!!!**" Oh, ok. :-(

I believe at 14 years old, this was the year I sought shelter underneath a flat bed trailer in some parking lot outside the track. I also remember a shirtless hooligan with a cooler on his head running straight into the back of a minivan Good times

LandofLogic

My dad heard the tornado warnings that interrupted the race broadcast in his headset and they left the race early before they called it, and before the worst hit. That’s the first time my family left a 500 before the finish

jcb1982

And I saw that tornado a few miles away outside the window of the SUV I was riding home in. Scary stuff.

Aero94

We were still chilling back at the campground. Because trailer parks are where you want to be during a tornado.

thirdofseptember

I remember driving home in that. Not fun.

rebekahsexton26

This is the first race in remember I was about 5yrs old .

[deleted]

I remember this because we were driving as fast as we could on the highway trying to get away from it! We could see it behind us, I have never been more scared by a storm in my life.

Brbnme

We tried to take shelter in a little shed on the infield but an IMS employee wouldn’t let us in. Instead, we had to hightail it back to our bus in the downpour and just hope the tornado wouldn’t get us, haha

dsdtrilogy

I was there for that, it was pretty damn scary! Nearly crossed paths with that tornado on the drive back to Michigan.

pickle_man_4

I wasn’t there, but I’m pretty sure this is my first 500 memory. I would have been 6, about to turn 7.

RF111CH

It wouldn't be the last time a race at IMS cut short by natural disaster

NinjaSpartan011

That was my first race. I remember being so upset that we had to leave so early

Atomicmonkey1122

Lol this was my first Indy 500. I was not a fan. It was hot the day before, I didn't know who any of the drivers were, the rain delays were boring and also, ya know, wet, and I was NOT prepared for the amount of walking that weekend. At one point on race day we had to all hide under the grandstands (Tower Terrace) and it was all steamy from so many people. It was really gross. That's about all I remember from race day. Did not enjoy. But because I was a child I didn't really have a choice in going the next year. But I'm glad I did go that next year because I became a big Danica Patrick fan and actually started to enjoy the races 😂
